14. Two new diatom species of the genus Gomphonemopsis (Bacillariophyceae) from the coast of China and two new combinations for the genus.

Abstract

Two new diatom species belonging to the genus Gomphonemopsis are described, Gomphonemopsis nana sp. nov. and Gomphonemopsis gaoi sp. nov. These two species were compared in detail with congeners. Gomphonemopsis nana is distinguished by its high stria density and small size. This species was found so far to be epiphytic only on the eelgrass collected from Qingdao Bay (Yellow Sea). Gomphonemopsis gaoi is characterized by its isopolar valves, simple proximal raphe endings and acutely rounded apices. This taxon was separated from the exoskeleton of marine copepods sampled from the Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve (South China Sea). In addition, two new combinations, Gomphonemopsis oahuensis (Hustedt) Lang Li, Yuhang Li & Changping Chen, comb. nov. and Gomphonemopsis platypus (Østrup) Lang Li, Yuhang Li & Junxiang Lai, comb. nov. are proposed. Abstract

On the basis of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, surface elastic theory, the strain equivalent assumption and modiffed couple stress theory, the nonlinear governing equations of the nano-beam are derived. In addition, the Galerkin method and the Harmonic Balance Method are adopted so as to give a solution to the equations. In the example, the effects of nano-beam length, nano-beam thickness, damage factor and surface efect to curves of amplitude-frequency response of the nano-beam are discussed. The results show that damage effects should be taken into consideration and the frequency can be controlled by load and structure size of nano-beam.

Despite their important roles in ecosystems, the molecular basis of how diatoms cope with oxidative stress caused by nutrient fluctuations remains largely unknown. Here, an isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) proteomic method was coupled with a series of physiological and biochemical techniques to explore oxidative stress- and cell fate decision-related cellular and metabolic responses of the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana to nitrate (N) and inorganic phosphate (P) stresses. A total of 1151 proteins were detected; 122 and 56 were significantly differentially expressed from control under N- and P-limited conditions, respectively. In N-limited cells, responsive proteins were related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, oxidative stress responses and cell death, corresponding to a significant decrease in photosynthetic efficiency, marked intracellular ROS accumulation, and caspase-mediated programmed cell death activation. None of these responses were identified in P-limited cells; however, a significant up-regulation of alkaline phosphatase proteins was observed, which could be the major contributor for P-limited cells to cope with ambient P deficiency. Abstract

Densification behaviour and microstructural evolution of TiO 2 /CAS (CaO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 )-incorporated alumina has been investigated systematically. The experimental results show that TiO 2 can greatly enhance the densification rates of alumina but trigger severely abnormal grain growth (AGG) at 0.60 wt%. On the other hand, small amounts of CAS can effectively inhibit abnormal grain growth, but provoke an abnormal densification owing to the formations of in situ pores left by liquid phase. With additional 0.50 wt% of CAS incorporated into 0.60 wt% TiO 2 -doped sample, the aspect-ratios of anisotropic growth grains increase by reduced growth rates of flat boundaries, accomplished by basal planes much smoother and straighter. This microstructure subsequently disappears when CAS incorporation is up to 4.0 wt%, substituted by that with low aspect-ratio and fine-equiaxed grains. Such occurrences are discussed in term of levels of liquid phase and 2-dimension (2-D) nucleation processes.

Abstract

The effects of etching with HCl on the hydrogen sorption properties of Mg 2 Ni have been investigated. On being etched with HCl, Mg 2 Ni can be activated and hydrided easily at room temperature and its low temperature desorption kinetics are improved. However, its hydriding is incomplete at room temperature and its room temperature hydrogen absorption capacity degrades rapidly on cycling. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses show that the etching treatment removes the magnesium oxide overlayer and preferentially dissolves away magnesium; this results in a new surface layer composed mainly of porous, metallic nickel microspheres. We believe that the nickel microspheres act as the active catalyst for hydrogen absorption and desorption at lower temperatures. The incomplete hydriding and the cycling degradation of the hydrogen absorption capacity at room temperature are caused, we suggest, by the cracking and disintegration of the alloy powder on each cycle, with the newly generated surfaces deactivating very quickly.
