37. Clinical Efficacy of Mirena Comparing with Thermal Balloon Endometrial Abliation for Menorrhagia: a Meta-Analysis.

Abstract

Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy of Mirena with the thermal balloon endometrial ablation for menorrhagia treatment. Methods: The well -known databases in both English and Chinese were retrieved. The randomized controlled trials of Mirena and the thermal balloon endometrial ablation were included after evaluating the quality of methodology. Revman 5.2 software was then used to do statistics. Results: There were not statistical differences in the effective rate, the failure rate and the patient satisfaction between two methods. The incidence of postoperative complications and the direct medical cost in the Mirena group were significantly lower than those in the thermal balloon endometrial ablation group (P<0.05). Conclusions: Mirena is safe and effective for patients with menorrhagia. Compared with the thermal balloon endometrial ablation, Mirena is a better alternative method as the conservative treatment for menorrhagia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Kinect-based Powered Wheelchair Control System.

Abstract

With the trend of the aging society, how to take good care of the elders has become the significant issue. Based on the techniques of Kinect interface and indoor positioning, this paper develops a power wheelchair control system to improve the living quality of disabled elders. To realize hand gesture recognition with Kinect interface, the disabled elder uses hand gesture to call the wheelchair. The power wheelchair moves to the location of disabled elder automatically. At the same time, the elder can request the power wheelchair to any places via a touch panel. 41. Developing a damage assessment model for bridge surroundings: a study of the disaster caused by Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan.

Abstract

Typhoon Morakot has been the most severe typhoon disaster to strike Taiwan in recent decades causing tremendous damage to bridge surroundings in 2009. However, we still lack a means of assessing post-typhoon damage for follow-up rebuilding. This paper presents an integrated model that automatically measures changes in rivers, areas of damage to bridge surroundings, and changes in vegetation. The proposed model is based on a neurofuzzy mechanism enhanced by the self-organising map optimisation algorithm and also includes the particular functions of dilation, erosion, and skeletonisation to deal with river imagery. High resolution FORMOSAT-2 satellite imagery from before and after the invasion period is adopted. A bridge is randomly selected from the 129 destroyed due to the typhoon for applications of the model. The recognition results show that the river average width has increased 66% with a maximum increase of over 200%. The ruined segment of the bridge is located exactly in the most scoured region. There has also been a nearly 10% reduction in the vegetation coverage. The results yielded by the proposed model demonstrate a pinpoint accuracy rate of 99.94%. Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the immunoprotective activity of the Egrecombinant ferritin and Egrecombinant mMDH proteins in mice., Methods: Thirty ICR mice were divided into 3 groups and immunized by injection of adjuvant-emulsified rEgferritin, rEgmMDH and PBS, respectively, in multiple spots at back, for 3 times with an interval of 2 wk. Two weeks after the last immunization, the mice of the 3 groups were infected intraperitoneally with 0.1 ml suspension containing about 1 500 Echinococcus granulosus (Eg) protoscoleces. The mice were sacrificed 22 wk after infection and the Eg cysts were collected and measured. Spleens were taken for detecting CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells and ratio calculated., Results: Eg cysts were found in 30% (3/10) of the mice in the rEgferritin group with 5 cysts altogether; cysts were received in all the mice in the rEgmMDH group with 118 cysts totally; and cysts were found in 7 of 9 mice in the PBS control with 35 cysts totally. The mice in the rEgferritin group showed an 84.7% protection but revealed no protection in the rEgmMDH group. The CD4+ T cells were significantly higher in the rEgferritin group than the control, but no statistical difference was found in CD8+ T cells and CD4+/CD8+ ratio between the 2 groups. There was no considerable change in the T cells and ratio in the rEgmMDH group compared to the control., Conclusion: The Egrecombinant ferritin can inhibit the growth of Eg while the Egrecombinant mMDH seems promoting its growth in mice.
