Human resources are concerned with recruiting, training and keeping talent. The correct selection of personnel is key to the success of a business because regardless of the outstanding business strategy, those who put it into practice are most important. A carefully developed strategy is as bad as having no strategy if the wrong person is placed in the wrong position. There are no studies to predict the competency of job applicants based on dimensional values such as level of knowledge, self-motivation, self-concern and role perception. This study proposes a prediction model that uses AI (Artificial Intelligence), this includes a quantitative mathematical model that identifies the level of personnel competency to optimize job performance. The model verifies the discrete and continuous relationship between competency dimensions and their synergetic effects. Four AI algorithms are used to train a data set that contains 362 data elements, consisting of two optimized combinations of dimensional values in step 1, and 360 data elements that are derived from the dimensional relationship that produces the synergetic effects. The proposed model predicts the competence of job applicants and compares this competence with the value gives optimized job performance to optimize the selection of human resources. Crystallography, the primary method for determining the 3D atomic positions in crystals, has been fundamental to the development of many fields of science. However, the atomic positions obtained from crystallography represent a global average of many unit cells in a crystal. Here, we report, for the first time, the determination of the 3D coordinates of thousands of individual atoms and a point defect in a material by electron tomography with a precision of ∼19 pm, where the crystallinity of the material is not assumed. From the coordinates of these individual atoms, we measure the atomic displacement field and the full strain tensor with a 3D resolution of ∼1 nm3 and a precision of ∼10−3, which are further verified by density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The ability to precisely localize the 3D coordinates of individual atoms in materials without assuming crystallinity is expected to find important applications in materials science, nanoscience, physics, chemistry and biology. Dislocations and their interactions strongly influence many material properties, ranging from the strength of metals and alloys to the efficiency of light-emitting diodes and laser diodes. Several experimental methods can be used to visualize dislocations. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has long been used to image dislocations in materials, and high-resolution electron microscopy can reveal dislocation core structures in high detail, particularly in annular dark-field mode. A TEM image, however, represents a two-dimensional projection of a three-dimensional (3D) object (although stereo TEM provides limited information about 3D dislocations). X-ray topography can image dislocations in three dimensions, but with reduced resolution. Using weak-beam dark-field TEM and scanning TEM, electron tomography has been used to image 3D dislocations at a resolution of about five nanometres (refs 15, 16). Atom probe tomography can offer higher-resolution 3D characterization of dislocations, but requires needle-shaped samples and can detect only about 60 per cent of the atoms in a sample. Here we report 3D imaging of dislocations in materials at atomic resolution by electron tomography. By applying 3D Fourier filtering together with equal-slope tomographic reconstruction, we observe nearly all the atoms in a multiply twinned platinum nanoparticle. We observed atomic steps at 3D twin boundaries and imaged the 3D core structure of edge and screw dislocations at atomic resolution. These dislocations and the atomic steps at the twin boundaries, which appear to be stress-relief mechanisms, are not visible in conventional two-dimensional projections. The ability to image 3D disordered structures such as dislocations at atomic resolution is expected to find applications in materials science, nanoscience, solid-state physics and chemistry. Transmission electron microscopy is a powerful imaging tool that has found broad application in materials science, nanoscience and biology. With the introduction of aberration-corrected electron lenses, both the spatial resolution and the image quality in transmission electron microscopy have been significantly improved and resolution below 0.5?ångströms has been demonstrated. To reveal the three-dimensional (3D) structure of thin samples, electron tomography is the method of choice, with cubic-nanometre resolution currently achievable. Discrete tomography has recently been used to generate a 3D atomic reconstruction of a silver nanoparticle two to three nanometres in diameter, but this statistical method assumes prior knowledge of the particle's lattice structure and requires that the atoms fit rigidly on that lattice. Here we report the experimental demonstration of a general electron tomography method that achieves atomic-scale resolution without initial assumptions about the sample structure. By combining a novel projection alignment and tomographic reconstruction method with scanning transmission electron microscopy, we have determined the 3D structure of an approximately ten-nanometre gold nanoparticle at 2.4-ångström resolution. Although we cannot definitively locate all of the atoms inside the nanoparticle, individual atoms are observed in some regions of the particle and several grains are identified in three dimensions. The 3D surface morphology and internal lattice structure revealed are consistent with a distorted icosahedral multiply twinned particle. We anticipate that this general method can be applied not only to determine the 3D structure of nanomaterials at atomic-scale resolution, but also to improve the spatial resolution and image quality in other tomography fields. Electron ptychography has emerged as a popular technology for high-resolution imaging by combining the high coherence of electron sources with the ultra-fast scanning electron coil. However, the limitations of conventional pixelated detectors, including poor dynamic range and slow data readout speeds, have posed restrictions in the past on conducting electron ptychography experiments. We used the Gatan STELA pixelated detector to capture sequential diffraction data of monolayer two-dimensional (2D) materials for ptychographic reconstruction. By using the pixelated detector and electron ptychography, we demonstrate the observation of the radiation damage at atomic resolution in Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs). The fundamental detection scheme of typical grating or photonic crystal (PhC) sensors relies on the correlation of the diffraction behaviors with the refractive index of target analyte. For biomaterial detection, a thin gold film is usually deposited on the sensor surface so that cross linkers can be anchored before functionalizing the device. The nanoscale metallic film suggests plasmonic resonances play a critical role in light-matter interaction. In this work, we demonstrated a compact two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal PhC biosensor with thin gold film coating. In such a device, surface plasmon polariton (SPP) on the metal structure and phase matching of optical wave with the PhC are considered when analyzing light-biomaterial interaction on the detector. Using Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA-1) antibody as an example, protein sensing along different lattice orientations of the PhC biosensor was investigated. Based on the dispersion relationship and phase matching conditions, we unravel the mechanisms involved in the wavelength shifts and sensitivities. The simulation results verify the phenomenon of tighter spatial confinement and higher local field intensity from the SPP, which helps detecting small variations of the refractive index on the sensor surface. Block copolymer-based multicomponent materials have garnered considerable attention because of tunable properties due to their various constituents. The use of electron tomography through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the three-dimensional (3D) imaging of stained block copolymers is an established approach for investigating structure-property relationships. Recently, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with an annular dark-field (ADF) detector has emerged as a method for the 3D structural analysis of unstained block copolymers. However, because of a lack of electron contrast, only a few low-resolution 3D reconstructions were reported for light elements. Herein, we report the first 3D structural analysis of a 200-nm-thick film composed of unstained double-gyroid block copolymers-polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-P2VP)-at a resolution of 8.6 nm through spherical aberration Cs-corrected STEM. At this resolution, P2VP molecules can be distinguished from PS molecules in z-contrast 3D reconstructions obtained both experimentally and theoretically. Alcohol in water is one of the fundamental liquid–liquid solutions in chemical and biological processes. Water-alcohol mixtures exhibit many abnormal physicochemical properties, the origins of which remain mysterious. In addition, the presence of a high concentration of mesoscale objects in such mixtures has caused debate; many researchers attribute these objects to bulk nanobubbles because their concentration is strongly affected by the amount of dissolved air gases. To resolve these issues, here we use transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study ethanol–water mixtures. TEM reveals mesoscopic clathrate structures with water molecules forming a crystalline matrix hosting a high density of tiny cells. The presence of these mesoscopic clathrate structures is further supported by a refractive index of 1.27 ± 0.02 at 405 nm measured via NTA and the hydrophilic nature of the mesoscopic structures implied by AFM observations, explaining many long-standing puzzles related to water-alcohol mixtures. A Cr–Ni multilayer comprised of alternating nanosized amorphous Cr- and crystalline Ni-rich sublayers was successfully prepared by pulse-current electroplating in a plating bath containing Cr 3 + and Ni 2 + ions. The microstructure of the Cr–Ni multilayer was analyzed with transmission electron microscopy, and the chemical composition was analyzed with Auger electron spectroscopy and a local electrode atom probe (LEAP). The analytical results of the LEAP showed small amounts of Cl, O and N in the Cr-rich layers but not in the Ni-rich ones. This indicates that the reduction of Cr 3 + ions is complicated in the vicinity of the cathodic surface. Moreover, Cr tends to form chlorides and oxides during electrocrystallization. The electrocrystallization behavior of the Cr–Ni multilayer is discussed based on the results of the microstructure and chemical composition analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) is high-resolution lensless microscopy that has been applied to image a wide range of specimens using synchrotron radiation, X-ray free-electron lasers, high harmonic generation, soft X-ray lasers and electrons. Despite recent rapid advances, it remains a challenge to reconstruct fine features in weakly scattering objects such as biological specimens from noisy data. Here an effective iterative algorithm, termed oversampling smoothness (OSS), for phase retrieval of noisy diffraction intensities is presented. OSS exploits the correlation information among the pixels or voxels in the region outside of a support in real space. By properly applying spatial frequency filters to the pixels or voxels outside the support at different stages of the iterative process ( i.e. a smoothness constraint), OSS finds a balance between the hybrid input-output (HIO) and error reduction (ER) algorithms to search for a global minimum in solution space, while reducing the oscillations in the reconstruction. Both numerical simulations with Poisson noise and experimental data from a biological cell indicate that OSS consistently outperforms the HIO, ER-HIO and noise robust (NR)-HIO algorithms at all noise levels in terms of accuracy and consistency of the reconstructions. It is expected that OSS will find application in the rapidly growing CDI field, as well as other disciplines where phase retrieval from noisy Fourier magnitudes is needed. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy is a well-established technique for characterizing low-Z elements in materials. Typically, a measured spectrum image is contributed from several materials when the composition of the specimen is sophisticated. Therefore, decomposing the distribution of each endmember is crucial to material scientists. In this article, we combined multiple linear least-squares fitting and k-means clustering to resolve the aforementioned issue. In addition, our method can nearly extract the true endmembers in materials unsupervisedly. Simulated and experimental data were employed to evaluate the performance and feasibility of our method. The sensitivity of traditional diffraction grating sensors is limited by the spatial resolution of the measurement setup. Thus, a large space is required to improve sensor performance. Here, we demonstrate a compact hexagonal photonic crystal (PhC) optical sensor with high sensitivity. PhCs are able to diffract optical beams to various angles in azimuthal space. The critical wavelength that satisfies the phase matching or becomes evanescent was used to benchmark the refractive index of a target analyte applied on a PhC sensor. Using a glucose solution as an example, our sensor demonstrated very high sensitivity and a low limit of detection. This shows that the diffraction mechanism of hexagonal photonic crystals can be used for sensors when compact size is a concern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this study, a biomimetic crystalline lens with properties that combine the softness of a hydrogel comparable to that of a human lens for adjustable focus and the property for image aberration correction with gradient refractive index (GRIN) was developed by the self-organization of an amphiphilic block copolymer blended with high refractive index titanium nanoparticles (TiO2). The hydrogel lens was prepared by using a thermally responsive poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) (PPO–PEO–PPO) triblock copolymer (Poloxamer 407) with the lower-critical solution temperature (LCST) property that can be injectable into the eye capsule as a liquid below its LCST and solidifies as a soft gel above the LCST at the human body temperature. By chemical modification of the triblock copolymer with double bonds on its chain-ends (Poloxamer 407A), the soft lens network can be made by using UV crosslinking of the hydrogel. To further increase the refractive index (RI) of the hydrogel lens network and to match its RI to that of the human lens (=1.41), highly visible-light transparent titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were introduced into the hydrogel lens network. To create a biomimetic GRIN lens as in the human’s eyes, an electric field method was also used to induce an axial diffusion of TiO2 nanoparticles from the center of the lens where TiO2 nanoparticles were first injected to the edge. The above method demonstrates the potential to use the hydrogel/nanoparticle hybrid as an injectable replacement for a soft optical lens system with an adjustable focus for future MEMs application.
