Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 protease inhibitor L-735, 524 exhibits good oral bioavailability and plasma pharmokinetic profiles in laboratory animals. The hydroxyaminopentane amide inhibits virus replication in cell culture and prevents viral precursor polyprotein cleavage. This results in noninfectious progeny viral particles.

Magnetic properties, phase evolution, and microstructure of melt-spun (Sm1-xPrx)Co7-yHfyCz ribbons have been investigated. For (Sm1-xPrx)Co7-yHfy (x=0–1; y=0.1–0.3) ribbons, the magnetization increases, but coercivity decreases, with increasing Pr content. However, the phase constitution and microstructure have not been influenced by modifying Pr content x. The attractive magnetic properties of Br=6.5 kG, iHc=6.1 kOe, and (BH)max=7.2 MG Oe could be obtained for (Sm0.8Pr0.2)Co6.9Hf0.1 ribbons. A slight addition of C in (Sm0.8Pr0.2)Co6.9Hf0.1Cz (z=0.06–0.14) ribbon not only refines the microstructure, but also induces nanoscale fcc-Co precipitation in the matrix, leading to the stronger exchange-coupling effect between magnetic grains and the enhancement of remanence and magnetic energy product. As a result, the improved magnetic properties of Br=7.1 kOe, iHc=8.5 kOe, and (BH)max=11.2 MG Oe can be achieved for (Sm0.8Pr0.2)Co6.9Hf0.1C0.12 ribbons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetoelectric composites were created through incorporating dispersed CoFe2O4 ferromagnetic grains into a Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 relaxor ferroelectric matrix. The two phases are chemically compatible and coexist in the dense, sintered composites. Unlike other relaxors, the Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6-containing composites can be electrically poled. The apparent dielectric constant is enhanced by the conductivity in the ferrite phase and the space charge at the phase interface. A significant magnetoelectric effect was observed in all compositions investigated, with a maximum dE/dH value of 24.8 mV/cm/Oe obtained for 0.4CoFe2O4/0.6Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6, which is much greater than that of magnetoelectric compounds and solid solutions. These results demonstrate that the Pb-free (Sr,Ba)Nb2O6 relaxor can be advantageously used as the matrix for ferromagnetic/ferroelectric composites in the future development of magnetoelectric materials. A novel processing methodology that allows combined preheating and Flash- SPS ( FSPS) of silicon carbide-based materials has been developed. Beta-SiC (+10 wt% B4C) powders were densified (Ф 20 mm) up to 96% of their theoretical density in 17 s under an applied pressure of 16 MPa (5 kN). The flash event was attributed to the sharp positive temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity (thermal runaway) of SiC, and a sudden increase in electric power absorption (Joule heating) of the samples after a sufficient preheating temperature (>600°C) was reached. The microstructural evolution was analyzed by examining materials densified by FSPS in the range of 82%-96% theoretical densities. FEM modeling results suggest that the FSPS heating rate was of the order of 8800°C/min. A comparative analysis was done between FSPS and reference samples (sintered using conventional SPS in the temperature range of 1800°C-2300°C). This allowed for a better understanding of the temperatures generated during FSPS, and in turn the sintering mechanisms. We also demonstrated the scalability of the FSPS process by consolidating a large α-SiC disk (Ф 60 mm) in about 60 s inside a hybrid SPS furnace equipped with an induction heater, which allowed us to achieve sufficient preheating (1600°C) of the material to achieve FSPS.
