Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an important cause of avoidable childhood visual impairment, and the increase in number and survival of premature infants may inflate its burden globally. We aimed to comprehensively assess the trends and inequalities in the burden of ROP-related visual impairment and to identify improvement gaps to facilitate appropriate actions in neonatal care systems. We obtained ROP data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study. We employed joinpoint regression analysis to assess the trends of the burden of ROP-related visual impairment, measured by age-standardised prevalence rates, health equity analysis methods to evaluate cross-country burden inequalities, and data envelopment and stochastic frontier analyses to identify improvement gaps based on the development status, i.e., sociodemographic index (SDI). Between 1990 and 2019, the age-standardised prevalence rates of ROP-related visual impairment significantly increased worldwide (average annual percentage change: 0.23 [95% confidence interval, 0.21–0.26] among males and 0.26 [0.25–0.27] among females), primarily in developed regions. Although significant SDI-related cross-country inequalities were identified, these reduced over time (slope index of inequality: -57.74 [-66.22 to -49.25] in 1990 to -29.68 [-38.39 to -20.97] in 2019; health concentration index: -0.11 [-0.13 to -0.09] in 1990 to -0.07 [-0.09 to -0.06] in 2019). Notably, some less-developed countries exhibited superior performance despite limited resources, whereas others with a higher SDI delivered lagging performance. Conclusion: The global burden of ROP-related visual impairment has steadily increased between 1990 and 2019, with disproportionate burden concentration among less-developed countries, requiring appropriate preventive and intervention measures. Background: Blindness and vision loss (BVL) is a major global health issue affecting older adults, but its burden in transition countries has received limited attention. Therefore, we aimed to assess the trends in the burden of BVL among older adults between 1990 and 2019 across Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS), and predict the burden by 2040. Methods: Data on BVL and its related causes were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study. We investigated the temporal trends by calculating the average annual percentage change using joinpoint regression analysis. Subsequently, we performed Bayesian age‐period‐cohort modeling to estimate the burden of BVL and its related causes by 2040. Results: Most BRICS countries experienced a significant decline (p < 0.05) in age‐standardized prevalence rates, and the decreasing trends tend to continue. However, by 2040, the number of BVL cases is expected to increase by approximately 50% across BRICS, with an estimated approximately 192, 170, 25, 17, and 7 million cases in China, India, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa, respectively. The related ranks of BVL causes are also estimated to change in the future, particularly in India. Conclusions: The different burdens and trends of BVL across BRICS reflected the different stages of population health transition. The methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process is regarded as a crucial approach for ensuring the sustainable growth of China's chemical industry. However, the fine catalyst particles and insoluble organics in the water system poses a serious threat to the stability of the MTO process. A novel horizontal swirl regeneration micro-channel separation (HSRMS) method for purifying the MTO reaction wastewater was developed in this study. On-site experiments were conducted using a device with a capacity of 1 t/h to investigate the separation and regeneration effects under various parameters and to verify the feasibility of this method through a long-term observation. The results showed that this method could effectively remove the fine solids and insoluble organics in the reaction wastewater, and the device operated stably with fluctuations in both the quality and quantity of wastewater for 24 consecutive days. The suspended solids in the effluent was maintained below 5 mg/L, and the average removal efficiency for insoluble organics exceeded 75%. Furthermore, the excellent regeneration performance was achieved, with solid particles and oil in the media reduced to less than 0.2% after regeneration. This method could ensure long-term stable operation of the water system and outperform other commonly used reaction wastewater treatment methods in terms of investment, maintenance cost, freshwater supplementation, and energy consumption. How to deal with the brittleness of ceramic materials is always one of the hot topics in the field of materials science. Design of layered ceramics with textured structure is one of the effective methods to improve their fracture toughness. The introduction of additives as interlayer phases can balance fracture toughness and flexural strength. However, the research about addition of interlayer phases and their mechanisms in the layered ceramics is still limited. In this work, nacre-like alumina ceramics were successfully fabricated by freeze casting followed by hot pressing. Silicon nitride was incorporated as the interlayer phase, and the effect on the mechanical properties of the nacre-like alumina was investigated. The addition of silicon nitride was beneficial to improvement of interlayer bonding between the alumina layers due to formation of sialon phase, leading to increase of flexural strength but decease of fracture toughness. When the content of silicon nitride was 3.3 wt%, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the sample was 468 MPa and 6.2 MPa m1/2, respectively. Compared with the sample without silicon nitride, the flexural strength was enhanced significantly. Additionally, both flexural strength and fracture toughness were improved as compared the sample without any additives. This work can provide available references for design and fabrication of high-strength and high-toughness ceramics by properly tuning the layer structure and interlayer phase composition. Fine-grained image classification can be considered as a discriminative learning process where images of different subclasses are separated from each other while the same subclass images are clustered. Most existing methods perform synchronous discriminative learning in their approaches. Although achieving promising results in fine-grained visual classification (FGVC) in natural images, these methods may fail in fine-grained ship classification (FGSC) problem in remote sensing (RS) images due to the highly “imbalanced fineness” and “imbalanced appearances” of ships among subclasses. To tackle the issue, we propose an asynchronous contrastive learning-based method for effective FGSC. The proposed method, which we refer to as “Push-and-Pull Network (P2Net)”, includes a “push-out stage” and a “pull-in stage”, where the first stage forces all the instances to be decorrelated and then the second one groups them into each subclass. A dual-branch network is designed to separate/decorrelate the images with each other, while an integration module is designed to aggregate the decorrelated images into their corresponding subclass together with a proxy-based module designed for acceleration. In this way, the correlation between subclasses can be decoupled, which in turn makes the final classification much easier. Our method can be trained end-to-end and requires no additional annotations other than category information. Extensive experiments are conducted on two large-scale FGSC datasets (FGSC-23 and FGSCR-42). Our method outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches. The rapid detection of ships within the wide sea area is essential for intelligence acquisition. Most modern deep learning-based ship detection methods focus on locating ships in high-resolution (HR) remote sensing (RS) images. Seldom efforts have been made on ship detection in medium-resolution (MR) RS images. An MR image covers a much wider area than an HR one of the same size, thus facilitating quick ship detection. To this end, we propose a tiny ship detection method, namely, the degraded reconstruction enhancement network (DRENet), for MR RS images. Different from previous methods that mainly focus on feature fusion strategies to improve the expression ability of the detector, we design an additional network branch, i.e., degraded reconstruction enhancer, to learn to regress an object-aware blurred version of the input image in the training phase. Our intuition is that the proposed reconstruction branch may guide the backbone to focus more on tiny ship targets instead of the vast background. Moreover, we incorporate a CRoss-stage Multi-head Attention module in the detector to further improve the feature discrimination by leveraging the self-attention mechanism. To fill the gap of lacking a large-scale MR ship detection dataset, we introduce LEVIR-Ship, which contains 3896 GF-1/GF-6 multispectral images and over 3k tiny ship instances. Experiments on LEVIR-Ship validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. Our method achieves 82.4 AP with 85 FPS, which outperforms many state-of-the-art ship detection methods. Silica is one of the most widely used ceramics due to its excellent chemical stability and dielectric property. However, its destructive brittle nature inhabits it from wider application as a functional ceramic. An improvement in toughness is a challenging topic for silica ceramic, as well as other ceramics. In the paper, silica ceramic with different types of boron nitride powders and alumina platelets was fabricated by hot-pressing. Introduction of the additives had great influence on the composites' mechanical properties and microstructure. The silica matrix composite containing micro-sized boron nitride powders possessed the best mechanical properties, including the bending strength (134.5 MPa) and the fracture toughness (1.85 Mpa·m1/2). Meanwhile, the introduction of alumina platelets combined with boron nitride nanosheets achieved an effective enhancement of fracture toughness while maintaining the bending strength. Compared with the monolithic silica, the composite with simultaneous addition of alumina platelets and boron nitride nanosheets had a fracture toughness of 2.23 Mpa·m1/2, increased by approximately 27% (1.75 Mpa·m1/2). The crack deflection and platelet pullout were contributing to enhancement of the fracture toughness. The improved mechanical properties, combined with the intrinsic excellent dielectric and chemical properties, make the silica matrix composites promising wave transparent and thermal protection materials. Alumina is one of the most commonly used and researched structural ceramic because of its excellent properties. However, its intrinsic brittleness is the fatal drawback, which hinders it from wider applications. How to improve its fracture toughness as well as the bending strength is always challenging for material researchers. In this paper, alumina matrix composites were fabricated by hot-pressing, in which some additives, including zirconia, alumina platelets, and MXene, were incorporated. The influence of the introduced additives on their microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. Compare with the monolithic alumina, both bending strength and fracture toughness of all samples were improved greatly. Incorporation of zirconia was beneficial to the mechanical properties due to the phase-transformation strengthening and toughening mechanism. While alumina platelets resulted in high fracture toughness because of the self-toughening of elongated grains. The synergistic effect of alumina platelets and MXene enormously improved the fracture toughness from 2.9 ± 0.3 MPa·m1/2 for monolithic alumina to 7.5 ± 0.4 MPa·m1/2 for the composite, which was increased by 159%. [Display omitted] Methanol to olefin (MTO) process is a chemical technology for producing low-carbon olefins from coal-based or natural gas-based methanol, which has changed the pattern of low-carbon olefins relying on petroleum cracking. However, a large amount of fine catalyst powders circulating in the water system of the MTO plant threats the sustainability of the process severely. Previously, a pilot-scale study about swirl regenerating micro-channel separation (SRMS) technology to remove the fine waste catalyst powders from MTO quench water was reported. In this study, the SRMS equipment was scaled up to an industrial level with a processing capacity of 400 m3/h based on the results of pilot-scale experiments, and the performance of the industrial unit was monitored for over 6 months. The results obtained directly from the industrial site showed that the SRMS unit based on deep-bed filtration and swirling flow enhanced washing and desorption could effectively remove the fine catalyst particles in the quench water, and the effluent particle concentration was maintained below 20 mg/L. Furthermore, the total oil content in the quench water reduced from 43.2 mg/L to 22.8 mg/L after being processed by the SRMS unit, which demonstrates that the SRMS unit also has an appreciable ability for oil pollutants removal. After the long-term operation of the SRMS unit, the equilibrium concentration of particulate matter in the quench water was reduced to under 50 mg/L, which significantly improved the performance of the quench water heat exchanger and effectively reduced the cleaning frequency of the heat exchanger, air cooler, and other equipment in the water system. Through the industrial-scale technical comparison, this technology outperforms the other common quench water treatment methods in equipment investment, maintaining cost, freshwater supplement, and energy consumption. This paper studies stability problems of discrete-time linear time-invariant (LTI) systems subject to random time delays. Leveraging on a general mean-square, small-gain type stability condition for feedback systems containing structured stochastic multiplicative uncertainties, we derive mean-square small-gain stability conditions for LTI random delay systems, in which the delays may arise at random instants, or may have random delay lengths. We model the random delays as structured, correlated stochastic uncertainties and obtained necessary and sufficient mean-square stability criteria. The criteria require computing the spectral radius of a constant matrix, which enable us to ascertain whether a system's state variance matrix converges asymptotically despite the presence of random delays. [Display omitted] From the perspective of resource reserves, the development of coal-based methanol-to-olefins (MTO) technology is regarded as an important direction for the sustainable development of the chemical processing industry in China. However, the wastewater generated in the process of industrial operation has a significant impact on the stability of the process. To remove the fine waste catalyst particles from MTO quench water, a swirl regenerating micro-channel separation (SRMS) technology was developed. A 25 m3/h pilot-scale study was conducted to examine the separation and regeneration effects under different operating parameters and verify the feasibility of this technology through a long-duration experiment. Results showed that for filtration velocities ranging from 11 to 15 m/h, the total separation efficiency was 95–99 %, the removal efficiency of 0.2 μm particles was 83–90 %, and the regeneration cycle was 24–40 h while the waste catalyst particle concentration in quench water was 300–600 mg/L. The optimum regeneration water and gas speeds were determined to be 11–15 m/h and 56.6 m/h, respectively. Moreover, the performance of the pilot plant over 600 h continuous operation effect of was tested, and an average separation efficiency > 95 % with excellent regeneration was obtained. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). We investigated its trends in high-income countries to gain insights into preventing DR-related blindness in diabetes-epidemic areas. For joinpoint regression analysis, we extracted data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study and analysed the prevalence trends of DR-related blindness according to DM type, patients' sex and age, region, and nation. Overall, the age-standardised prevalence rate (ASPR) of DR-related blindness has decreased. The prevalence rates of blindness decreased more sharply for Type 1 DM than for Type 2 DM. The ASPR was higher and the decreasing trend was less pronounced in women than in men. Southern Latin America had the highest ASPR, whereas Australasia had the lowest ASPR. Singapore experienced the greatest decline, whereas unfavourable trends were observed in the USA. Despite decrease in the overall ASPR of DR-related blindness during the study period, large improvement opportunities were identified. As DM prevalence increases and the population ages rapidly in high-income countries, novel effective screening, treatment, and prevention strategies are urgently needed to improve the visual outcomes of individuals with DM or at risk of DM. Abstract In this paper we derive explicit lower bounds on the delay margin of second-order unstable delay systems achievable by PID control, which provide a priori a guaranteed range of delay values over which a second-order delay plant can be stabilized by a PID, and more generally, a finite-dimensional LTI controller. This is done by deriving lower bounds on the delay margin achievable by PD controllers, whereas this margin constitutes a lower bound on that achievable by PID controllers. Analysis shows that in most cases our results can be significantly less conservative than the lower bounds obtained elsewhere using more sophisticated, general LTI controllers. Abstract A large 4 π liquid scintillator was commonly used as the neutron detector to measure nucleus (n,2n) and (n,3n) reaction cross sections in the past direct neutron counting method. However, this type of detector was often criticized for its high γ -rays background. Hence we constructed a new 4 π 3He array detector to substitute the large liquid scintillation detector, which can effectively suppress the γ -rays. This work mainly studies the detection efficiency and moderation time of this new detector through experimental and simulational methods. Due to its spherical configuration, a relatively stable and weak angular dependence detection efficiency is obtained for the secondary neutrons from (n,2n) and (n,3n) reactions. In addition, the character that the moderation time is nearly independent of neutron energy guarantees gate width has a same influence on the detection efficiency of the secondary neutrons from different samples. These features make it a good candidate detector for (n,2n) and (n,3n) reaction cross section measurements. This paper studies the optimal estimation problem for linear time-invariant systems over lossy communication networks subject to multi-channel packet losses. In its full generality, we assume that the random packet losses are spatially correlated across different channels. The problem is addressed by employing a modified Kalman filter to estimate the system's states, and the primary issue under study is the convergence of the state estimate under a mean-square criterion. This convergence is shown to be equivalent to the existence of a stabilizing solution to a modified algebraic Riccati equation. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition to characterize the existence of the stabilizing solution, and show that the solution can be computed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities. Additionally, from a robust convergence perspective, we consider further packet losses whose probabilities are unknown and uncertain. We develop a matrix measure referred to as the critical matrix to characterize the maximal tolerance for the modified Kalman filter to converge. In this study, the nacre-like alumina ceramics, with introduction of zirconia, are fabricated by freeze casting followed by hot pressing. The experimental results show that zirconia particles are uniformly distributed between the layered alumina 'brick' in the form of 'mortar'. Due to the incorporation of zirconia with proper particle size, both flexural strength and fracture toughness of the nacre-like alumina are greatly improved, much stronger and tougher than pure alumina. In regard to the sample containing 13.3 wt% zirconia, the flexural strength reaches 522 MPa, ∼47% increase in comparison with the monolith. Particularly, when zirconia content is 10 wt%, the fracture toughness is increased by ∼66%, from 6.1 MPa m1/2 to 10.1 MPa m1/2. Microstructure observation and fracture behavior analysis reveal that the coupling effects of bioinspired nacre-like structure and stress-induced transformation toughening are responsible for the enhanced mechanical properties. Inactive trade unions, moreover, contribute to the deterioration of income inequality because of the existence of administrative monopoly power. China's dual market structure (i.e., the coexistence of an administrative monopoly sector and nonadministrative monopoly sector), as well as the trade unions' administrativization and bureaucratization, are main reasons that trade unions do not effectively improve China's income distribution problem. Thus, in order to optimize the structure of income distribution, trade unions in China should start a reform of de-administrativization, reconstruction of the function of workers' rights protection, and strengthening the independence of the grassroots trade union organizations. Purpose: Aztreonam/avibactam is effective against serious infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria including Enterobacterales harboring metallo-β-lactamases. While the utility of this combination has been established in vitro and in clinical trials, the purpose of this study is to enhance our understanding of the underlying mechanism responsible for their activities through metabolomic profiling of a multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli clinical isolate.Metabolomic analyses of time-dependent changes in endogenous bacterial metabolites in a clinical isolate of a multidrug-resistant E. coli treated with aztreonam and avibactam were performed. E. coli metabolomes were compared at 15 min, 1 h and 24 h following treatments with either avibactam (4 mg/L), aztreonam (4 mg/L), or aztreonam (4 mg/L) + avibactam (4 mg/L).Drug treatment affected 326 metabolites with magnitude changes of at least 2-fold, most of which are involved primarily in peptidoglycan biosynthesis, nucleotide metabolism, and lipid metabolism. The feedstocks for peptidoglycan synthesis were depleted by aztreonam/avibactam combination; a significant downstream increase in nucleotide metabolites and a release of lipids were observed at the three timepoints.The findings indicate that the aztreonam/avibactam combination accelerates structural damage to the bacterial membrane structure and their actions were immediate and sustained compared to aztreonam or avibactam alone. Hydrogenated oils are commonly used as solvents in the petroleum resin industry. The separation of particulate matter from hydrotreating oil is critical to product quality and the service life of the catalyst in the downstream fixed bed. Conventional separation methods, represented by diatomaceous earth filtration, suffer from low separation efficiency, high material consumption, generation of large amounts of hazardous waste, and cumbersome operation. Therefore, a physical method of microchannel separation coupling hydrocyclone was proposed. A 1 m3/h pilot pretreatment device was established to comprehensively evaluate the particle removal in hydrogenated oil. The high separation efficiency and long operation cycle were achieved by a microchannel separator with 0.5–1 mm particle size quartz sand. The single cycle of the microchannel separator was 75 h. The turbidity was decreased by about 64.3%, which was better than that of the traditional separation method (49.9%). The particle removal in hydrogenated oil by microchannel separator was about 75.0%, while the removal of diatomite separator in the same period was only 44.7%. In a 40 m3/h petroleum resin plant based on a microchannel separator, the operating cost and the hazardous waste emissions are reduced by 1,815,000 CNY/year and 208 tons/year, respectively. Currently, materials that absorb electromagnetic waves (EMW) are being increasingly studied and used. In particular, numerous attempts have been made to improve the performance of EMW-absorbing ceramics, but little attention was paid to the effect of doping on their relevant properties. In this work, Ti 3 AlC 2 , a typical MAX-phase ceramic, was doped with different elements (Zr, Mo, Cr, Fe and Ni) at the M site via a pressure-free reactive sintering. Phase and microstructure analysis show that the doped Ti 3 AlC 2 samples possess high purities and typical layered structures. It was noticed that (Ti 0.8 Zr 0.2) 3 AlC 2 demonstrates the lowest reflection loss (−48.0 dB at the thickness of 1.62 mm) and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 3.9 GHz. Elemental doping has been proved to alter the dielectric and magnetic properties of Ti 3 AlC 2 , and the boosted EMW absorption performance was found to be originated from the improved impedance matching. Here, we systematically investigated the influence of different dopants on the EMW absorption characteristics of Ti 3 AlC 2 , which provides significant insights for the future design of novel EMW-absorbing materials. Separation energy consumption in industrial production accounts for 10–15 % of global energy consumption. Nonthermal separation represented by sand filtration can open a new door to separation energy savings. Traditional sand filters cannot be regenerated completely, which limits their efficiency. A sand filter coupling hydrocyclone (SFCH) was proposed to enhance regeneration. The performance of SFCHs with different separation particle sizes was systematically analyzed, as indicated by turbidity, water, and chlorine in a pilot-scale experiment. The larger the sand particle size of the SFCH was, the longer it took to reach saturation. The efficiency and cycle were balanced by combining SFCHs with particle sizes of 1–2 mm and 0.5–1 mm. The average turbidity, water and chlorine decreased from 793 NTU, 1439 mg/L, and 126 mg/L to 155 NTU, 389 mg/L, and 88 mg/L, respectively, with a cycle of 88 h. Under the same conditions, the effluent turbidity of the SFCH was half of that of the original disc centrifuge, which indicates that the life of the downstream alumina bed was doubled. Almost 260 t/year alumina consumption can be reduced in a 200,000 tons/year-capacity petroleum resin plant, saving 600,000 USD/year, mainly due to the extension of the service life of the alumina bed. Driven by the advances of porous materials in hydrogen storage, ion filtration/separation, and catalysis, three novel 3D porous frameworks of BC 2 N compounds were designed in this study. They are characterized by a porous structure with low density formed by hexagonal arrays of carbon and boron nitride in alternating patterns. These structures contain sp 2-and sp 3-hybridized B–C, C–C, and C–N bonds. Structural stability is rigorously evaluated by means of energy, elastic constants, and phonon dispersion, confirming the thermodynamic, mechanical, and kinetic stability of the designed BC 2 N- x frameworks. First-principles calculations reveal their semiconducting nature, which is characterized by a narrow direct bandgap ranging from 0.140 eV to 0.422 eV. The mechanical properties are studied with tensile strength calculations, and results show these structures are as strong as diamond with tensile strength value of 97∼102 GPa along <010> direction. Carbon black wastewater is a by-product of partial oxidation of natural gas to acetylene and can cause serious pollution to the environment. In this study, the effect of deep bed filtration (microchannel filtration) in the synergistic separation of particulate pollutants and organic pollutants in carbon black wastewater were investigated. The results indicated that the separation efficiency of carbon black particles with a mean diameter of 6.88 µm was 95%− 98%, 95–97%, and 95%− 96% when the filter material was quartz sand + quartz sand, quartz sand + activated, and quartz sand + anthracite, respectively. The solid content of inlet was 300 mg/L and 145 NTU, respectively, and those of the purified effluent were below 15 mg/L and 14 NTU, which meet the first-class B standard of China sewage discharge. The total kinds of organics were reduced from 29 to 2. The separation efficiency of C 6 -C 24 all higher than 97%. A 150 m3/h full-closed treatment process for carbon black wastewater was designed to replace the original open sedimentation tank. The carbon black wastewater could be efficiently purified by this method, the purified carbon black wastewater could be reused, and the carbon black was used to make a filter cake for recycling in rubber without discharge. The PID control is favored in controlling industrial processes for its ease of implementation. In this paper we present an analytical study, with an aim at stability robustness, tracking performance, and pole placement of first-order unstable plants under PID control. We employ a multiplicity-induced dominancy (MID) strategy to design and tune PID controller gains, which is shown to possess desirable properties that ensure specified decay rate of the closed-loop response and the stability robustness of the closed-loop system in spite of variations in the delay parameter. We also study the tradeoff between delay robustness and tracking performance of PID controllers. We show that under the constraint of steady-state tracking, the maximal delay robustness range can be computed by solving a unimodal pseudo-concave optimization problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Separation techniques utilized in industrial manufacturing account for approximately 10–15% of the total global energy consumption. Energy-efficient separation has been made possible through the use of deep filtration technology. Herein, a novel continuous and regenerative microchannel separator coupled with a hydrocyclone was proposed. The microchannel separator, which had a processing capacity of 30 t/h, was constructed in a petroleum resin plant. This device could separate trace microfine particles in hydrogenated oil. After treatment with the microchannel separator, the average particle removal efficiency was 50.7%, and the turbidity of the hydrogenated oil was reduced by a maximum value of 60.9%. The removal efficiencies of pollutant particles with diameters smaller than 5 μm, in the range of 5–10 μm, and larger than 10 μm in the hydrogenated oil were 44.0%, 54.9%, and 75.9%, respectively. The processing load on the downstream diatomite filter was effectively reduced by the microchannel separator. The lifespan of the diatomite filter increased by 2.3 times compared to its initial value. Hazardous waste emissions decreased from 104 tons/year to 58.5 tons/year. The microchannel separator could be used not only for separating trace fine particles from liquids but also for separating oil and water by modulating the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the particle surfaces. Synergic effect of graphene oxide (GO) and silicon nitride whisker (Si 3 N 4 w) on the mechanical properties of nacre-like alumina was investigated in this study. A comprehensive analysis on the composites, including microstructure, relative densities, flexural strength and fracture toughness, was carried out. The experimental results showed that, GO promoted the fracture toughness of the composites, but reduced the flexural strength slightly; while adding a certain amount of Si 3 N 4 w improved both flexural strength and fracture toughness. With the incorporation of GO and Si 3 N 4 w, the highest flexural strength reached 520 MPa and the fracture toughness reached 9.59 MPa m1/2. Microstructure observation revealed that the enhanced mechanical properties were ascribed to the synergistic toughening mechanisms induced by the nacre-like structure of alumina, GO pull-out, Si 3 N 4 w pinning and pull-out. With the continuous development of microwave technology, the electromagnetic (EM) environment we face is becoming increasingly complex. EM wave absorbing materials, which convert EM wave energy into other forms of energy such as thermal energy, have attracted much attention in EM shielding technology for reducing and isolating EM interference. Finding absorbing materials with both strong and wideband absorption performance in 2–18 GHz is particularly important. In this paper, (Zr 0.2 Ti 0.2 Hf 0.2 Ta 0.2 Cr 0.2)C, (Zr 0.2 Ti 0.2 Hf 0.2 Ta 0.2 Ni 0.2)C, (Zr 0.2 Ti 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 Cr 0.2)C and (Zr 0.2 Ti 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 Ni 0.2)C high-entropy carbide powders were prepared through calculation and design, and their properties were compared with TaC and NbC. According to the analysis of phase composition, microstructure, and EM wave absorption performance, the prepared high-entropy carbides have formed single-phase solid solutions, and their absorption performance has been improved. It can be noted that (Zr 0.2 Ti 0.2 Hf 0.2 Nb 0.2 Ni 0.2)C has the minimum reflection loss (RL) of − 42.61 dB, and it has the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (E AB) of 3.60 GHz at the thickness of 1.00 mm. Through the analysis of EM parameters, it was found that high-entropy carbides with different compositions changed the dielectric loss, magnetic loss, and their coupling effect. This provides important insights for designing absorbing materials with ultra-thin and good conductivity. Granular bed filters are widely utilized in hot gas dust removal due to their low cost, high temperature resistance, and simple structure compared with other dust removal methods. Conventional granular bed filtration is usually only applicable to the separation of particulate matters above PM 10 , and its PM 2.5 efficiency separation needs to be improved. A new method for efficiently separating PM 2.5 is developed in this study by combining different filter media. The effects of filter deck thickness, filter mediums diameter, and granular bed combination characteristics on PM 2.5 separation efficiency and separation pressure drop are systematically studied. A group of single-deck filtration experiments show that the average separation efficiency for PM 2.5 can reach 92.9% with an average separation pressure drop of 0.53 kPa. Double-deck granular bed filtration can also offer an average separation efficiency for PM 2.5 91.2%, but the average separation pressure drop is significantly reduced to 0.4 kPa. The results prove that compared with a single granular bed; double granular beds demonstrate evident advantages in energy consumption ratio. Methanol-to-olefin (MTO) is a typical new coal chemical industry example. Due to the large volume of generated wastewater, complex composition including catalysts, aromatics and various oxygen-containing compounds, and serious environmental hazard, wastewater recycling is critical for sustainable industrial development and ecological protection. Herein, a swirl regenerating micro-channel separation (SRMS) technology was proposed to integrate deep filtration and hydrocyclone-enhanced regeneration. A small-scale experimental investigation was first conducted to verify the feasibility of the MTO wastewater treatment. A pilot SRMS device with a treatment capacity of 20 m3/h was constructed, and the device's continuous operation effect and stability were comprehensively evaluated. The separation performance of the SRMS device at different solution pH values and the impact of the hydrocyclone-enhanced regeneration of separation media were discussed in detail. At low solution pH values (<7), the SRMS device exhibits an average separation efficiency of 92.0% for fine particulate matter in wastewater, and the median particle size, d 50 , decreases from 1.55 to 0.6 μm. As the solution pH increases, the repulsive energy barrier for the medium-contaminant and contaminant-contaminant increases, inhibiting the deposition behavior of particulate pollutants. In addition, hydrocyclone desorbs contaminants deposited on the separation media and the average contaminant residual rate decreases from 3.3 to 0.2 wt%. We propose an industrial application for treating and reusing MTO wastewater (200 m3/h) using the SRMS technology based on the experimental results. The costs of the wastewater treatment process are as low as 0.25 CNY/m3, and the wastewater reuse rate is over 97% without chemical consumption. This work can provide an environmentally friendly and economically sustainable approach to the source management of MTO wastewater. The conventional petroleum refinery wastewater pretreatment process, usually consisting of an American Petroleum Institute (API) separator and air flotation tank, mainly achieves suspended solids (SS) and oil removal but also presents many shortcomings, such as chemical consumption, flotation scum production and land occupation. A physical method coupled by hydrocyclone-intensified filtration (HIF) and mixed fibrous coalescer was first proposed, followed by a lab-scale experimental investigation of the feasibility of collaborative suspended solids (SS) and oil removal. A 1 m3/h pilot-scale physical pretreatment unit was also set up to comprehensively evaluate the collaborative removal efficiency of oil and SS and the operation stability in raw petroleum refinery wastewater. The effect of the initial oil concentration, mainly emulsified oil, on the removal efficiency was thoroughly explored by the physical pretreatment process. The mean oil and SS concentrations of the petroleum refinery wastewater was decreased from 1078.9 mg/L and 214.2 mg/L to 9.7 mg/L and 31.2 mg/L, respectively, due to the physical pretreatment process. Additionally, the mean effluent oil concentration of the pilot-scale physical pretreatment unit decreased to 11.1 mg/L, and that of the flotation tank effluent was 18.8 mg/L, which also indicated that the physical pretreatment process had better performance in coping with influent fluctuations (with mean values from 14.4 mg/L to 5214.1 mg/L). SS and most of the oil in the petroleum refinery wastewater were efficiently separated by the hydrocyclone-intensified filter based on interception and adsorption by the filter media and thorough surface renewal of the filter media in the hydrocyclone, followed by further emulsified oil removal due to the X-shaped heterogeneous fibers. No flocculants were added to the physical pretreatment unit, thus achieving remarkable savings of 80.64 t/year poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) and 53.12 t/year polyacrylamide (PAM). Compared with a conventional pretreatment process with a capacity of 800 m3/h, the physical pretreatment process saves approximately 196 thousand USD/year due to chemicals consumption elimination and the oil sludge reduction arising therefrom. The physical pretreatment process instead of chemicals addition can help achieve the environmentally friendly goals of near-zero consumption of chemical flocculant, a near-zero increase in oil sludge and near-zero emission of VOCs. In this study, an amino-functionalized silica matrix encapsulating β-galactosidase was first synthesized in situ, with subsequent covalent anchoring of lysozyme to the outer part of the amino-grafted matrix. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra verified that β-galactosidase was successfully encapsulated. Meanwhile, the co-immobilized enzymes were demonstrated to retain suitable enzymatic activities and outstanding operational stability during successive reaction cycles. Furthermore, when used for lactose removal from skim milk, the packed-bed column system achieved both a high lactose hydrolysis rate and microbial inactivation ratio during 30 days of continuous operation. Notably, this system exhibited favorable stability during 60 days of continuous hydrolysis of lactose in solution and thus may be appropriate for further development for use in industrial lactose removal from milk. Methanol-to-olefin (MTO) is an important non-petroleum chemical process for the preparation of light olefins. However, the MTO process consumes copious amounts of water and produces large amounts of untreated effluent. Therefore, the realization of efficient wastewater treatment and recycling is key to the green low-carbon development of MTO. Here, a cooperative process combining swirl regenerating micro-channel separation (SRMS) and combined fibrous coalescence (CFC) technologies was proposed to separate high contents of oil and suspended matter in MTO wastewater. Using a pilot device with a treatment capacity of 1 m3/h, the average oil content in MTO wastewater decreased from 750 mg/L to <30 mg/L, while the average content of suspended matter decreased from 108 mg/L to <15 mg/L. Compared with a commercial MTO wastewater treatment process (olefin production capacity of 0.6 million tons per annum), the proposed method could reduce wastewater discharges and costs by 57% and US$ 0.23 million per annum respectively. Equipment costs and operational energy consumption were also reduced by 30% and >95% respectively. The combined process may provide the basis for the green and sustainable treatment of MTO wastewater and its recycling. Facing to the complexity of the industrial wastewater, a novel Hydrocyclone Intensified Filtration and Adsorption (HIFA) technology was developed to deeply remove Cr(III) and microscale suspended solids (mSS) from the leather industry wastewater, simultaneously. An efficient HMI-adsorbent of EMAH, with the Cr(III) adsorption capacity of 43.14 mg g−1 and the adsorption rate constant of 1.82 g mg−1 min−1 was fabricated. After the individual optimization of the operating conditions, this HIFA technology exhibited a superior performance in the treatment of real tannery wastewater. that the mSS content decreased from 919 mg L−1 to below 30 mg L−1, and the Cr(III) concentration decreased from 147.4 mg L−1 to below 0.5 mg L−1. Meanwhile, the filtration medium was in-situ regenerated for the recycle-use and the adsorbents separation efficiency was greater than 97% for clean water production. Comparing with the existing chemical precipitate method, not only the excellent treatment results were achieved, but also its commercial advantages were far beyond, that the process procedure was simplified and shortened, more significantly, the operation costs of 65% reagent consumption, 70% energy consumption, and 83.3% total hazardous solid wastes were saved. Therefore, the proposed HIFA technology provided an environmentally sustainable approach and highlight the commercial value for the industrial wastewater treatment.
