4. Role of focusing distance in picosecond laser-induced Cu plasma spectra

Abstract

To study the effects of focusing distance on the characteristics of copper plasma, a picosecond laser was utilized to ablate a pure copper plate to generate a plasma spectrum. Following numerous experiments on the subject, three significant factors have been determined: lens focal length, pulse energy and the lens-to-sample distance. These factors were employed to analyze the spectral intensity, plasma temperature and electron density in the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and optically thin condition. Due to the shielding effects of mixed plasma, the strongest spectral intensity can be obtained in the pre-focused case rather than on the focus, no matter how much beam irradiance was employed. The more intensive the beam irradiance is, the more the optimal position is distant from the focal point. Similarly, the evolution of plasma temperature and electron density was shown a peak in the pre-focused case, which is consistent with the trend of spectral intensity. For the case of extremely high irradiance (on the focus), the shielding effects become more apparent and the resultant above three factors decreased sharply. When a longer-focal-length lens was employed, the spectral intensity exhibited an obvious bimodal trend. In the pre-focused case, a longer-focal-length lens is helpful to eliminate the effects of the roughness of the target surface compared with a shorter one. Finally, the assumed LTE was validated by McWhirter relation, plasma relaxation time and diffusion length, and the optically thin condition also validated by spectral intensity ratio. 10. Influence of Coupled Structural Parameters of Photoconductive Antennas on the Terahertz Narrowband Detection Performance of High Sensitivity and Frequency Selection.

Abstract

Narrowband terahertz (THz) detection plays a key role in biomedical imaging, biological applications, and security screening. Particularly rapid resolution of material differences based on spectral fingerprints or time‐resolved observation of the materials conformational state typically requires only the measurement of spectral information at a few selected frequencies. Here, a high‐performance resonance‐based coupled photoconductive antenna (PCA) was designed, which consists of a square split‐ring resonator (SRR) and an H‐shaped antenna. The incident THz wave energy can be effectively coupled in the gap of the H‐shaped antenna, and the coupling effect base on coupled harmonic oscillator model can be effectively strengthened. By decreasing the square SRR gap width HD, the relative position parameters of d and L3 between the square SRR and H‐shaped antenna can markedly improve the resonance frequency sensitivity with inductive–capacitive resonance. With the square SRR arm length L1 = L2 = L increased, the resonance frequency markedly shifted toward a lower frequency and the resonance sensitivity increased. The results prove that the THz frequency selection detection range of the coupled PCA can be designed to 0.1∼1.0 THz. Compared with the traditional H‐shaped photoconductive detection antenna, the detection resonance peak shifted the lower frequency and the maximum THz detection sensitivity increased by approximately two orders of magnitude at 0.2528 THz. The structure of the noncontact micrometer–coupled PCA is simple and easy to fabricate and integrate. Abstract

Background: Our previous research revealed that inflammation plays an important role in the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia. The function of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is to activate the inflammatory process. Recent findings suggest that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential secondary messengers that activate the NLRP3 inflammasome. Hydrogen-rich saline (HS) has attracted attention for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, the protective effect and possible mechanism of HSin brain ischemia have not been well elucidated. Methods: To test the therapeutic effect of HS, we established a mouse model of distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (dMCAO) and an in vitro model of BV2 cells induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was used to investigate the underlying mechanisms of HS. Results: HS significantly improved neurological function, reduced infarct volume, and increased cerebral blood flow in a dMCAO mouse model. ROS, NLRP3, Caspase-1, and IL-1β expression increased after cerebral ischemia, and this was reversed by HS treatment. In BV2 cells, the application of NAC further demonstrated that HS could effectively inhibit the expression of the ROS-activated NLRP3 inflammasome. Conclusions: HS, as a novel therapeutic option, could exert protect the brain by inhibiting the activation of the ROS-NLRP3 signaling pathway after cerebral ischemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
