13. Characteristics of force chains in the flow of photoelastic particles under a barrier.

Abstract

The essence of particle flow is the microscale breaking and rebuilding of force chains. Therefore, it is essential to conduct research on force chains during the process of particle flow. This study focuses on particle flow during the ore drawing process, develops a photoelastic experimental system for physical ore drawing, studies the macroscopic change characteristics of force chains, analyzes the statistical properties of force chain intensity, length, quantity, and azimuth, and discusses the particle blockage phenomenon and its engineering application in ore drawing. The results show that the length of the strong force chains is mostly about five particles, with fewer numbers, and their direction is primarily concentrated between 60° and 120°. Weak force chains are abundant and distributed uniformly in all directions. In addition, based on the arching and blocking characteristics of particles, a novel sealing method for the ore pass is proposed. The research results deepen the understanding of granular material flow hazards and provide a valuable reference for similar engineering analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

By means of similar tests, the stope room is scaled and the process of multiple-drawpoint ore drawing under the influence of a flexible barrier is simulated by the marking particle method. Based on the experimental phenomena and data, the shape of the barrier, the draw column, and the numerical relations for the discharge between each drawpoint are analysed. The velocity equation for ore particles flowing through multiple drawpoints is established and the relationship between ore particle flow properties and velocity fields is found. Finally, the following results are derived: 1) For each layer, the morphology of marked particles is similar to that of vertical velocity. The particles are quasi-linear in the upper part of the model and wavy in the lower part. The amplitude increases with decreasing height. 2) The distribution of thirteen concentric points of horizontal velocity in each layer illustrate that the ore particles drawn from each drawpoint are from the centreline between it and the adjacent drawpoint. 3) The barrier and the marked particles are at the lowest sag points at the top of the number two and number six drawpoints (close to the model’s side wall) because of the combination of vertical velocity and horizontal velocity.

Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can lead to significant elevation of 1-deoxysphingolipids (1-deoxySL). The increase of 1-deoxySL in turn can result in mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress, which can cause further progression of CKD.Methods: This study assessed the therapeutic effect of Astragaloside IV (AST) against 1-deoxySL-induced cytotoxicity in vitro and in rats with CKD. HK-2 cells were exposed to 1-deoxysphinganine (doxSA) or doxSA + AST. doxSA-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress were evaluated by immunostaining, real-time PCR, oxidative stress sensor, and transmission electron microscopy. The potential effects of AST on kidney damage were evaluated in a rat 5/6 nephrectomy (5/6 Nx) model of CKD.Results: The findings of in vitro experiments showed that doxSA induced mitochondrial damage, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. AST markedly reduced the level of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, lowered apoptosis, and improved mitochondrial function. In addition, exposure to AST significantly induced the phosphorylation of p62 and the nuclear translocation of Nrf2 as well as its downstream anti-oxidant genes. p62 knock-down fully abolished Nrf2 nuclear translocation in cells after AST treatment. However, p62 knock-down did not affect TBHQ-induced Nrf2 nuclear translocation, indicating that AST can ameliorate doxSA-induced oxidative stress through modulation of p62 phosphorylation and Nrf2 nuclear translocation.Conclusion: The findings indicate that AST can activate Nrf2 antioxidant pathway in a p62 dependent manner. The anti-oxidative stress effect and the further mitochondrial protective effect of AST represent a promising therapeutic strategy for the progression of CKD.

Abstract

Introduction: Cerebellum might be active during the task of swallowing. Little is known whether cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) could improve post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) due to occlusion in the posterior circulation. This paper describes the rationale and design of a randomized controlled trial that aims to determine the effect of cerebellar rTMS on dysphagia due to posterior circulation stroke. Methods and Analysis: Thirty patients with PSD due to occlusion in the posterior circulation will be randomly divided to receive real (n = 20) or sham (n = 10) cerebellar rTMS. Patients in the real rTMS group will receive 250 pulses rTMS at a low intensity with 10 Hz frequency for 10 days (five consecutive days per week). The severity of dysphagia will be assessed with videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) using the Rosenbek penetration aspiration scale (PAS), the pharyngeal constriction ratio (PCR), and the dysphagia outcome and severity scale (DOSS) before and immediately after the last session and then again after 1 and 3 months. The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) will be assessed before and after the last session and then again after 1 month and 3 months. The primary outcome is the improvement of swallowing function determined by PAS, PCR, and DOSS. The secondary outcomes include changes in brain connectivity network detected using fMRI. Discussion: This study will determine whether cerebellar rTMS improves dysphagia due to posterior circulation stroke in Chinese patients.
