Atomically thin layers of transition-metal dicalcogenides (TMDCs) are often known to be metastable in the ambient atmosphere. Understanding the mechanism of degradation is essential for their future applications in nanoelectronics, and thus has attracted intensive interest recently. Here, we demonstrate a systematic study of atomically thin WTe$_{2}$ in its low temperature quantum electronic transport properties. Strikingly, while the temperature dependence of few layered WTe$_{2}$ showed clear metallic tendency in the fresh state, degraded devices first exhibited a re-entrant insulating behavior, and finally entered a fully insulating state. Correspondingly, a crossover from parabolic to linear magnetoresistance, and finally to weak anti-localization was seen. Real-time Raman scattering measurement, together with transmission electron microscopy studies done before and after air degradation of atomically thin WTe$_{2}$ further confirmed that the material gradually form amorphous islands. It thus leads to localized electronic states and explains the low temperature Coulomb gap observed in transport measurements. Our study reveals for the first time the correlation between the unusual magnetotransport and disorder in few-layered WTe$_{2}$, which is indispensable in providing guidance on its future devices application.

The radiative decay of quantum dot (QD) excitons into surface plasmons in a cylindrical nanowire is investigated theoretically. Maxwell's equations with appropriate boundary conditions are solved numerically to obtain the dispersion relations of surface plasmons. The radiative decay rate of QD excitons is found to be greatly enhanced at certain values of the exciton bandgap. Analogous to the decay of a two-level atom in the photonic crystal, we first point out that such an enhanced phenomenon allows one to examine the non-Markovian dynamics of the QD exciton. Besides, due to the one dimensional propagating feature of nanowire surface plasmons, remote entangled states can be generated via super-radiance and may be useful in future quantum information processing., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We propose a theoretical model to study the single-electron spectra of the concentric quantum double ring fabricated lately by self-assembled technique. Exact diagonalization method is employed to examine the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the concentric double ring. It is found the appearance of the AB oscillation in total energy depends on the strength of the screened potential. Variations of the energy spectra with the presence of coulomb impurities located at inner or outer ring are also investigated., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Shot noise of quantum ring (QR) excitons in a p-i-n junction surrounded by a microcavity is investigated theoretically. Some radiative decay properties of a QR exciton in a microcavity can be obtained from the observation of the current noise, which also gives the extra information about one of the tunnel barriers. The phonon-induced spin relaxation in a two-dimensional quantum dot embedded inside a semiconductor slab is investigated theoretically. An enhanced relaxation rate is found due to the phonon van Hove singularities. Oppositely, a vanishing deformation potential may also result in a suppression of the spin relaxation rate. For larger quantum dots, the interplay between the spin orbit interaction and Zeeman levels causes the suppression of the relaxation at several points. The shot-noise spectrum of a quantum dot p-i-n junction embedded inside a three-dimensional photonic crystal is investigated. Radiative decay properties of quantum dot excitons can be obtained from the observation of the current noise. The characteristic of the photonic band gap is revealed in the current noise with discontinuous behavior. A scheme is proposed to teleport charge qubits via superradiance. Reservoir-induced entanglement is generated between two semiconductor dots in a microcavity where a quantum state encoded in a third quantum dot is then tuned into collective decay with one of the entangled dots. A study on the cause of the multi-particle entanglement is presented in this work. We investigate how dot-like single quantum well excitons, which are independently coupled through a single microcavity mode, evolve into maximally entangled state as a series of conditional measurements are taken on the cavity field state. We first show how cavity photon affects the entanglement purity of the double-exciton Bell state and the triple-exciton W state. Generalization to multi-excitons W states is then derived analytically. Our results pave the way for studying the crucial cause of multi-particle collective effect., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

A scheme of three-particle entanglement purification is presented in this work. The physical system undertaken for investigation is dot-like single quantum well excitons independently coupled through a single microcavity mode. The theoretical framework for the proposed scheme is based on the quantum jump approach for analyzing the progress of the trible-exciton entanglement as a series of conditional measurement has been taken on the cavity field state. We first investigate how cavity photon affects the purity of the double-exciton state and the purification efficiency in two-particle protocol. Then we extend the two-particle case and conclude that the three-exciton state can be purified into W state, which involves the one-photon-trapping phenomenon, with a high yield. Finally, an achievable setup for purification using only modest and presently feasible technologies is also proposed., Comment: 9 pages and 4 figures

Half-cycle laser pulse is applied on an absorbed molecule to investigate its alignment and orientation behavior. Crossover from field-free to hindered rotation motion is observed by varying the angel of hindrance of potential well. At small hindered angle, both alignment and orientation show sinusoidal-like behavior because of the suppression of higher excited states. However, mean alignment decreases monotonically as the hindered angle is increased, while mean orientation displays a minimum point at certain hindered angle. A novel method is proposed to measure the Purcell effect by observing the current through a semiconductor quantum dot embedded inside a microcavity. The stationary current is shown to be altered if one varies the cavity length. For the double-dot system, the stationary current is found to show the interference feature (superradiance) as the inter-dot distance is varied. The amplitude of oscillation can be increased by incorporating the system into a microcavity. Furthermore, the current is suppressed if the dot distance is small compared to the wavelength of the emitted photon. The Aharonov-Bohm and superradiant effect on the redaitive decay rate of an exciton in a quantum ring is studied. With the increasing of ring radius, the exciton decay rate is enhanced by superradiance, while the amplitude of AB oscillation is decreased. The shot noise produced by tunneling of electrons and holes into a double dot system incorporated inside a p-i-n junction is investigated theoretically. The enhancement of the shot noise is shown to originate from the entangled electron-hole pair created by superradiance. The analogy to the superconducting cooper pair box is pointed out. Entangled states of two coupled polar molecules controlled by laser pulses are studied theoretically. Schmidt decomposition is used to measure the degree of entanglement. By varying the pulse shape of the applied laser, transition from regular to chaotic behavior may occur. This quantum feature is due to the inference of different phases. We propose to measure the superradiance effect by observing the current through a semiconductor double-dot ststem. An electron and a hole are injected separately into one of the quantum dots to form an exciton and then recombine radiatively. The superradiant decay rate of Wannier exciton in one dimensional system is studied. The crossover behavior from 1D chain to 2D film is also examined. It is found that the decay rate shows oscillatory dependence on channel width L.
