This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. We have constructed a catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with $z < 0.13$, based on optical spectroscopy, from the parent sample of galaxies in the 6dF galaxy survey (Final Release of 6dFGS), a census of the Southern hemisphere. This work is an extension of our all sky AGN catalog \citet [ZCF, here after]{ZCF19}. The ZCF is based on 43,533 galaxies with $\rm K_s \leq$ 11.75 ($z \leq 0.09$) in the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS). The parent catalog of this work, the 6dF catalog, consists of 136,304 publicly available digital spectra for 125,071 galaxies with $\rm Dec \leq 0^\circ$ and $\rm K_s \leq 12.65$ (median $z = 0.053$). Our AGN catalog consists of 3109 broad line AGNs and 12,156 narrow line AGNs which satisfy the \citet{Kauffmann03} criteria, of which 3865 also satisfy the \citet{Kewley01} criteria. We also provide emission line widths, fluxes, flux errors, and signal-to-noise ratios of all the galaxies in our spectroscopic sample, allowing users to customize the selection criteria. In addition, we provide AGN likelihood for the rest of galaxies based on the availability and quality of their spectra. We calculate the fundamental stellar parameters effective temperature, surface gravity and iron abundance - T$_{\rm eff}$, log g, [Fe/H] - for the final release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) Stellar Library (MaStar), containing 59,266 per-visit-spectra for 24,290 unique stars at intermediate resolution ($R\sim1800$) and high S/N (median = 96). We fit theoretical spectra from model atmospheres by both MARCS and BOSZ-ATLAS9 to the observed MaStar spectra, using the full spectral fitting code pPXF. We further employ a Bayesian approach, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique to map the parameter space and obtain uncertainties. Originally in this paper, we cross match MaStar observations with Gaia photometry, which enable us to set reliable priors and identify outliers according to stellar evolution. In parallel to the parameter determination, we calculate corresponding stellar population models to test the reliability of the parameters for each stellar evolutionary phase. We further assess our procedure by determining parameters for standard stars such as the Sun and Vega and by comparing our parameters with those determined in the literature from high-resolution spectroscopy (APOGEE and SEGUE) and from lower-resolution matching template (LAMOST). The comparisons, considering the different methodologies and S/N of the literature surveys, are favourable in all cases. Our final parameter catalogue for MaStar cover the following ranges: $2592 \leq $ T$_{\rm eff} \leq 32983\;$K; $-0.7 \leq $ log g $ \leq 5.4\;$dex; $-2.9 \leq $ [Fe/H] $\leq 1.0\;$dex and will be available with the last SDSS-IV Data Release, in December 2021., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures. We report the stellar atmospheric parameters for 7503 spectra contained in the first release of the MaNGA stellar library (MaStar) in SDSS DR15. The first release of MaStar contains 8646 spectra measured from 3321 unique stars, each covering the wavelength range 3622 \AA\ to 10354 \AA\ with a resolving power of $R \sim$ 1800. In this work, we first determined the basic stellar parameters: effective temperature ($\rm T_{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log g$), and metallicity ($\rm[Fe/H]$), which best fit the data using an empirical interpolator based on the Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra (MILES), as implemented by the University of Lyon Spectroscopic analysis Software (Koleva et al. 2008, ULySS) package. While we analyzed all 8646 spectra from the first release of MaStar, since MaStar has a wider parameter-space coverage than MILES, not all of these fits are robust. In addition, not all parameter regions covered by MILES yield robust results, likely due to the non-uniform coverage of the parameter space by MILES. We tested the robustness of the method using the MILES spectra itself and identified a proxy based on the local density of the training set. With this proxy, we identified 7503 MaStar spectra with robust fitting results. They cover the range from 3179K to 20,517K in effective temperature ($\rm T_{eff}$), from 0.40 to 5.0 in surface gravity ($\log g$), and from $-$2.49 to $+$0.73 in metallicity ($\rm[Fe/H]$)., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

We present a multi-wavelength study of the active galactic nucleus in the nearby ($D=14.1$ Mpc) low mass galaxy IC 750, which has circumnuclear 22 GHz water maser emission. The masers trace a nearly edge-on, warped disk $\sim$0.2 pc in diameter, coincident with the compact nuclear X-ray source which lies at the base of the $\sim$kpc-scale extended X-ray emission. The position-velocity structure of the maser emission indicates the central black hole (BH) has a mass less than $1.4 \times 10^5~M_\odot$. Keplerian rotation curves fitted to these data yield enclosed masses between $4.1 \times 10^4~M_\odot$ and $1.4 \times 10^5~M_\odot$, with a mode of $7.2 \times 10^4~M_\odot$. Fitting the optical spectrum, we measure a nuclear stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_* = 110.7^{+12.1}_{-13.4}$~{\rm km~s}$^{-1}.$ From near-infrared photometry, we fit a bulge mass of $(7.3 \pm 2.7) \times 10^8~M_\odot$ and a stellar mass of $1.4 \times 10^{10}~M_\odot$. The mass upper limit of the intermediate mass black hole in IC 750 falls roughly two orders of magnitude below the $M_{\rm BH}-\sigma_*$ relation and roughly one order of magnitude below the $M_{\rm BH}-M_{\rm Bulge}$ and $M_{\rm BH}-M_*$ relations -- larger than the relations' intrinsic scatters of (0.58 $\pm$ 0.09) dex, 0.69 dex, and (0.65 $\pm$ 0.09) dex, respectively. These offsets could be due to larger scatter at the low mass end of these relations. Alternatively, black hole growth is intrinsically inefficient in galaxies with low bulge and/or stellar masses, which causes the black holes to be under-massive relative to their hosts, as predicted by some galaxy evolution simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) is an empirical stellar library at medium spectral resolution covering the wavelength range from 3000 \AA to 24 800 \AA. This library aims to provide a benchmark for stellar population studies. In this work, we present a uniform set of stellar atmospheric parameters, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and iron abundances for 754 spectra of 616 XSL stars. We used the full-spectrum fitting package ULySS with the empirical MILES library as reference to fit the ultraviolet-blue (UVB) and visible (VIS) spectra. We tested the internal consistency and we compared our results with compilations from the literature. The stars cover a range of effective temperature 2900 < Teff < 38 000 K, surface gravity 0 < log g < 5.7, and iron abundance -2.5 < [Fe/H] < +1.0, with a couple of stars extending down to [Fe/H] = -3.9. The precisions of the measurements for the G- and K-type stars are 0.9%, 0.14, and 0.06 in Teff, log g, and [Fe/H], respectively. For the cool giants with log g < 1, the precisions are 2.1%, 0.21, and 0.22, and for the other cool stars these values are 1%, 0.14, and 0.10. We have constructed an all-sky catalog of optical AGNs with $z < 0.09$, based on optical spectroscopy, from the parent sample of galaxies in the 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS), a near-complete census of the nearby universe. Our catalog consists of 1929 broad line AGNs, and 6562 narrow line AGNs which satisfy the \citet{Kauffmann03} criteria, of which 3607 also satisfy the \citet{Kewley01} criteria. We also report emission line widths, fluxes, flux errors, and signal-to-noise ratios of all the galaxies in our spectroscopic sample, allowing users to customize the selection criteria. Although we uniformly processed the spectra of galaxies from a homogeneous parent sample, inhomogeneities persist due to the differences in the quality of the obtained spectra, taken with different instruments, and the unavailability of spectra for $\sim$20\% of the galaxies. We quantify how the differences in spectral quality affect not only the AGN detection rates but also broad line to narrow line AGN ratios. We find that the inhomogeneities primarily stem from the continuum signal-to-noise (S/N) in the spectra near the emission lines of interest. We fit for the AGN fraction as a function of continuum S/N and assign AGN likelihoods to galaxies which were not identified as AGNs using the available spectra. This correction results in a catalog suitable for statistical studies. This work also paves the way for a truly homogeneous and complete nearby AGN catalog by identifying galaxies whose AGN status needs to be verified with higher quality spectra, quantifying the spectral quality necessary to do so., Comment: 30 pages, 24 figures, 5 tables

We have conducted a study to quantify the systematic differences resulting from using different stellar population models in optical spectroscopic identification of type II AGN. We examined the different AGN detection fractions of 7069 nearby galaxies (z <= 0.09) with SDSS DR8 spectra when using the Bruzual & Charlot (2003, BC03), Vazdekis et al. (2010, MILES), and solar metallicity Maraston and Stromback (2011) (MS11solar) stellar population models. The line fluxes obtained using BC03 and MS11solar are publicly available from SDSS data releases. We find that the BC03 templates result in systematically higher BPT line ratios and consequently higher AGN fractions and the MS11solar templates result in systematically lower line ratios and AGN fractions compared with the MILES templates. Using MILES as the standard, BC03 results in 25% "false positives" and MS11solar results in 22% "false negatives" when using the Kewley et al. (2001a) boundary for AGN identification. The fraction of galaxies whose AGN identification changes for different templates is luminosity dependent, ranging from a few percent for L[OIII]5007 >= 10^40 erg s-1 and increasing to ~ 50% for L[OIII]5007 <= 10^38 erg s-1. We present the first release of XSL, the X-Shooter Spectral Library. This release contains 237 stars spanning the wavelengths 3000--10200 \AA\ observed at a resolving power $R \equiv \lambda / \Delta\lambda \sim 10000$. The spectra were obtained at ESO's 8-m Very Large Telescope (VLT). The sample contains O -- M, long-period variable (LPV), C and S stars. The spectra are flux-calibrated and telluric-corrected. We describe a new technique for the telluric correction. The wavelength coverage, spectral resolution and spectral type of this library make it well suited to stellar population synthesis of galaxies and clusters, kinematical investigation of stellar systems and studying the physics of cool stars., Comment: 41 pages, 38 figures, 5 tables.
