A previous study showed that high-glucose (HG) conditions induce mitochondria fragmentation through the calcium-mediated activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK 1/2) in H9C2 cells. This study tested whether empagliflozin could prevent HG-induced mitochondria fragmentation through this pathway. We found that exposing H9C2 cells to an HG concentration decreased cell viability and increased cell apoptosis and caspase-3. Empagliflozin could reverse the apoptosis effect of HG stimulation on H9C2 cells. In addition, the HG condition caused mitochondria fragmentation, which was reduced by empagliflozin. The expression of mitochondria fission protein was upregulated, and fusion proteins were downregulated under HG stimulation. The expression of fission proteins was decreased under empagliflozin treatment. Increased calcium accumulation was observed under the HG condition, which was decreased by empagliflozin. The increased expression of ERK 1/2 under HG stimulation was also reversed by empagliflozin. Our study shows that empagliflozin could reverse the HG condition, causing a calcium-dependent activation of the ERK 1/2 pathway, which caused mitochondria fragmentation in H9C2 cells. The bicultural work motivations of Asian Americans have not yet been comprehensively captured by contemporary vocational constructs and scales. For this study, we conducted two studies on the initial reliability and validity of the Bicultural Work Motivation Scale (BWMS) by combining qualitative and quantitative methods. First, a pilot study was conducted with 14 Asian American college students to assess their motivation to work, and items were generated from the themes developed in the qualitative analysis. Results from the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a stable four-factor structure of the BWMS: Honoring Parents, Family Financial Obligation, Fulfilling Personal Interest, and Being Independent. Adequate reliability and evidence for concurrent and discriminant validity are presented. Implications of the scale for further vocational assessment and research are discussed.

Educational success among Asian American students has often been misunderstood as an occupational development separate from any experience of racism. However, several theorists have suggested that racial barriers in occupational mobility correlate with educational pursuits. Therefore, this research aims to examine the direct effect of perceived occupational racial barriers on educational pursuits and cultural factors as potential coping resources to moderate this effect. Research was conducted on 205 participants with East Asian backgrounds through hierarchical multiple regressions. Although cultural factors did not serve as moderators between a racial barrier and educational pursuits, the results suggested a racial barrier in less-educationally relevant occupations, such as politics, and a culture-specific variable, honoring parents, predicted effort-related activities. Further, enculturation and honoring parents accounted for significant variances in utility of education and educational intentions. (Contains 3 tables.)

Many vocational psychologists advocate addressing career as well as personal concerns in career counseling. However, some clients may have inappropriate expectations toward career counseling and may not be prepared or want to discuss personal issues. This study examined whether perceptions of the career counseling process could be modified with the use of role induction. Results indicated that, whereas role induction was associated with perceptions of students' own career concerns, gender was a strong influence in perceptions of counseling overall and in the stigma associated with a holistic perspective on career counseling. Aims: The timely selection of severe heart failure (HF) patients for cardiac transplantation and advanced HF therapy is challenging. Peak oxygen consumption (VO2) values obtained by the cardiopulmonary exercise testing are used to determine the transplant recipient list. This study reassessed the prognostic predictability of peak VO2 and compared it with the Heart Failure Survival Score (HFSS) in the modern optimized guideline‐directed medical therapy (GDMT) era. Methods and results: We retrospectively selected 377 acute HF patients discharged from the hospital. The primary outcome was a composite of all‐cause mortality, or urgent cardiac transplantation. We divided these patients into the more GDMT (two or more types of GDMT) and less GDMT groups (fewer than two types of GDMT) and compared the performance of their peak VO2 and HFSS in predicting primary outcomes. The median follow‐up period was 3.3 years. The primary outcome occurred in 57 participants. Peak VO2 outperformed HFSS when predicting 1 year (0.81 vs. 0.61; P = 0.017) and 2 year (0.78 vs. 0.58; P < 0.001) major outcomes. The cutoff peak VO2 for predicting a 20% risk of a major outcome within 2 years was 10.2 (11.8–7.0) for the total cohort. Multivariate Cox regression analyses showed that peak VO2, sodium, previous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation, and estimated glomerular filtration rate were significant predictors of major outcomes. Conclusions: Optimizing the cutoff value of peak VO2 is required in the current GDMT era for advanced HF therapy. Other clinical factors such as ICD use, hyponatraemia, and chronic kidney disease could also be used to predict poor prognosis. The improvement of resource allocation and patient outcomes could be achieved by careful selection of appropriate patients for advanced HF therapies, such as cardiac transplantation.
