The spin-torsion theory is a gauge theory approach to gravity that expands upon Einstein's general relativity (GR) by incorporating the spin of microparticles. In this study, we further develop the spin-torsion theory to examine spherically symmetric and static gravitational systems that involve free-falling macroscopic particles. We posit that the quantum spin of macroscopic matter becomes noteworthy at cosmic scales. We further assume that the Dirac spinor and Dirac equation adequately capture all essential physical characteristics of the particles and their associated processes. A crucial aspect of our approach involves substituting the constant mass in the Dirac equation with a scale function, allowing us to establish a connection between quantum effects and the scale of gravitational systems. This mechanism ensures that the quantum effect of macroscopic matter is scale-dependent and diminishes locally, a phenomenon not observed in microparticles. For any given matter density distribution, our theory predicts an additional quantum term, the quantum potential energy (QPE), within the mass expression. The QPE induces time dilation and distance contraction, and thus mimics a gravitational well. When applied to cosmology, the QPE serves as a counterpart to the cosmological constant introduced by Einstein to balance gravity in his static cosmological model. The QPE also offers a plausible explanation for the origin of Hubble redshift (traditionally attributed to the universe's expansion). The predicted luminosity distance--redshift relation aligns remarkably well with SNe Ia data from the cosmological sample of SNe Ia. Atherosclerosis is a chronic, progressive disease that primarily affects the arterial walls. It is one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease. Magnetic Resonance (MR) black-blood vessel wall imaging (BB-VWI) offers crucial insights into vascular disease diagnosis by clearly visualizing vascular structures. However, the complex anatomy of the neck poses challenges in distinguishing the carotid artery (CA) from surrounding structures, especially with changes like atherosclerosis. Cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of global disability and mortality. Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) sequences, recognized as the golden standard for diagnosing CVDs, can clearly visualize the dynamic flow and reveal pathological conditions within the cerebrovasculature. Therefore, precise segmentation of cerebral arteries (CAs) and classification between their main trunks and branches are crucial for physicians to accurately quantify diseases. However, achieving accurate CA segmentation in DSA sequences remains a challenging task due to small vessels with low contrast, and ambiguity between vessels and residual skull structures. Moreover, the lack of publicly available datasets limits exploration in the field. In this paper, we introduce a DSA Sequence-based Cerebral Artery segmentation dataset (DSCA), the first publicly accessible dataset designed specifically for pixel-level semantic segmentation of CAs. Additionally, we propose DSANet, a spatio-temporal network for CA segmentation in DSA sequences. Unlike existing DSA segmentation methods that focus only on a single frame, the proposed DSANet introduces a separate temporal encoding branch to capture dynamic vessel details across multiple frames. To enhance small vessel segmentation and improve vessel connectivity, we design a novel TemporalFormer module to capture global context and correlations among sequential frames. Furthermore, we develop a Spatio-Temporal Fusion (STF) module to effectively integrate spatial and temporal features from the encoder. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DSANet outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in CA segmentation, achieving a Dice of 0.9033.

Learning from feedback reduces the hallucination of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) by aligning them with human preferences. While traditional methods rely on labor-intensive and time-consuming manual labeling, recent approaches employing models as automatic labelers have shown promising results without human intervention. However, these methods heavily rely on costly proprietary models like GPT-4V, resulting in scalability issues. Moreover, this paradigm essentially distills the proprietary models to provide a temporary solution to quickly bridge the performance gap. As this gap continues to shrink, the community is soon facing the essential challenge of aligning MLLMs using labeler models of comparable capability. In this work, we introduce RLAIF-V, a novel framework that aligns MLLMs in a fully open-source paradigm for super GPT-4V trustworthiness. RLAIF-V maximally exploits the open-source feedback from two perspectives, including high-quality feedback data and online feedback learning algorithm. Extensive experiments on seven benchmarks in both automatic and human evaluation show that RLAIF-V substantially enhances the trustworthiness of models without sacrificing performance on other tasks. Using a 34B model as labeler, RLAIF-V 7B model reduces object hallucination by 82.9\% and overall hallucination by 42.1\%, outperforming the labeler model. Remarkably, RLAIF-V also reveals the self-alignment potential of open-source MLLMs, where a 12B model can learn from the feedback of itself to achieve less than 29.5\% overall hallucination rate, surpassing GPT-4V (45.9\%) by a large margin. Agreement protocols are crucial in various emerging applications, spanning from distributed (blockchains) oracles to fault-tolerant cyber-physical systems. In scenarios where sensor/oracle nodes measure a common source, maintaining output within the convex range of correct inputs, known as convex validity, is imperative. Present asynchronous convex agreement protocols employ either randomization, incurring substantial computation overhead, or approximate agreement techniques, leading to high $\mathcal{\tilde{O}}(n^3)$ communication for an $n$-node system. This paper introduces Delphi, a deterministic protocol with $\mathcal{\tilde{O}}(n^2)$ communication and minimal computation overhead. Delphi assumes that honest inputs are bounded, except with negligible probability, and integrates agreement primitives from literature with a novel weighted averaging technique. Experimental results highlight Delphi's superior performance, showcasing a significantly lower latency compared to state-of-the-art protocols. In many social networks, one publishes information that one wants to reveal (e.g., the photograph of some friends) together with information that may lead to privacy breaches (e.g., the name of these people). One might want to hide this sensitive information by encrypting it and sharing the decryption key only with trusted people, but this might not be enough. If the cipher associated to a face is always the same, correlation between the output of a face recognition system and the cipher can give useful clues and help train recognizers to identify untagged instances of the face. We refer to these as "correlation attacks". In this paper we present a coding system that attempts to counter correlation attacks by associating to each instance of a face a different encryption of the same tag in such a way that the correlation between different instances is minimal. In addition, we present a key distribution code that allows only the owner of the images to encode the tags, but allows a group of trusted friends to decode them.

Evacuation planning is an essential part of disaster management where the goal is to relocate people under imminent danger to safety. However, finding jointly optimal evacuation routes and schedule that minimizes the average evacuation time or evacuation completion time, is a computationally hard problem. As a result, large-scale evacuation routing and scheduling continues to be a challenge. In this paper, we present a game-theoretic approach to tackle this problem. We start by formulating a strategic routing and scheduling game, named the Evacuation Game: Routing and Scheduling (EGRES), where players choose their route and time of departure. We show that: (i) every instance of EGRES has at least one pure strategy Nash equilibrium, and (ii) an optimal outcome in an instance will always be an equilibrium in that instance. We then provide bounds on how bad an equilibrium can be compared to an optimal outcome. Additionally, we present a polynomial-time algorithm, the Sequential Action Algorithm (SAA), for finding equilibria in a given instance under a special condition. We use Virginia Beach City in Virginia, and Harris County in Houston, Texas as study areas and construct two EGRES instances. Our results show that, by utilizing SAA, we can efficiently find equilibria in these instances that have social objective close to the optimal value.

Monitoring mass accretion onto substellar objects provides insights into the geometry of the accretion flows. We use the Lulin One-meter Telescope to monitor H$\alpha$ emission from FU Tau B, a $\sim$19 $M_{\rm Jup}$ brown-dwarf companion at 5.7" (719 au) from the host star, for six consecutive nights. This is the longest continuous H$\alpha$ monitoring for a substellar companion near the deuterium-burning limit. We aim to investigate if accretion near the planetary regime could be rotationally modulated as suggested by magnetospheric accretion models. We find tentative evidence that H$\alpha$ mildly varies on hourly and daily timescales, though our sensitivity is not sufficient to definitively establish any rotational modulation. No burst-like events are detected, implying that accretion onto FU Tau B is overall stable during the time baseline and sampling windows over which it was observed. The primary star FU Tau A also exhibits H$\alpha$ variations over timescales from minutes to days. Geodesic models are known as an efficient tool for solving various image segmentation problems. Most of existing approaches only exploit local pointwise image features to track geodesic paths for delineating the objective boundaries. However, such a segmentation strategy cannot take into account the connectivity of the image edge features, increasing the risk of shortcut problem, especially in the case of complicated scenario. In this work, we introduce a new image segmentation model based on the minimal geodesic framework in conjunction with an adaptive cut-based circular optimal path computation scheme and a graph-based boundary proposals grouping scheme. Specifically, the adaptive cut can disconnect the image domain such that the target contours are imposed to pass through this cut only once. The boundary proposals are comprised of precomputed image edge segments, providing the connectivity information for our segmentation model. These boundary proposals are then incorporated into the proposed image segmentation model, such that the target segmentation contours are made up of a set of selected boundary proposals and the corresponding geodesic paths linking them. Experimental results show that the proposed model indeed outperforms state-of-the-art minimal paths-based image segmentation approaches.

Broadcast protocols enable a set of $n$ parties to agree on the input of a designated sender, even facing attacks by malicious parties. In the honest-majority setting, randomization and cryptography were harnessed to achieve low-communication broadcast with sub-quadratic total communication and balanced sub-linear cost per party. However, comparatively little is known in the dishonest-majority setting. Here, the most communication-efficient constructions are based on Dolev and Strong (SICOMP '83), and sub-quadratic broadcast has not been achieved. On the other hand, the only nontrivial $\omega(n)$ communication lower bounds are restricted to deterministic protocols, or against strong adaptive adversaries that can perform "after the fact" removal of messages. We provide new communication lower bounds in this space, which hold against arbitrary cryptography and setup assumptions, as well as a simple protocol showing near tightness of our first bound. 1) We demonstrate a tradeoff between resiliency and communication for protocols secure against $n-o(n)$ static corruptions. For example, $\Omega(n\cdot {\sf polylog}(n))$ messages are needed when the number of honest parties is $n/{\sf polylog}(n)$; $\Omega(n\sqrt{n})$ messages are needed for $O(\sqrt{n})$ honest parties; and $\Omega(n^2)$ messages are needed for $O(1)$ honest parties. Complementarily, we demonstrate broadcast with $O(n\cdot{\sf polylog}(n))$ total communication facing any constant fraction of static corruptions. 2) Our second bound considers $n/2 + k$ corruptions and a weakly adaptive adversary that cannot remove messages "after the fact." We show that any broadcast protocol within this setting can be attacked to force an arbitrary party to send messages to $k$ other parties. In this paper, we introduce an efficient method for computing curves minimizing a variant of the Euler-Mumford elastica energy, with fixed endpoints and tangents at these endpoints, where the bending energy is enhanced with a user defined and data-driven scalar-valued term referred to as the curvature prior. In order to guarantee that the globally optimal curve is extracted, the proposed method involves the numerical computation of the viscosity solution to a specific static Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) partial differential equation (PDE). For that purpose, we derive the explicit Hamiltonian associated to this variant model equipped with a curvature prior, discretize the resulting HJB PDE using an adaptive finite difference scheme, and solve it in a single pass using a generalized Fast-Marching method. In addition, we also present a practical method for estimating the curvature prior values from image data, designed for the task of accurately tracking curvilinear structure centerlines. Numerical experiments on synthetic and real image data illustrate the advantages of the considered variant of the elastica model with a prior curvature enhancement in complex scenarios where challenging geometric structures appear.

In Video Object Detection (VID), a common practice is to leverage the rich temporal contexts from the video to enhance the object representations in each frame. Existing methods treat the temporal contexts obtained from different objects indiscriminately and ignore their different identities. While intuitively, aggregating local views of the same object in different frames may facilitate a better understanding of the object. Thus, in this paper, we aim to enable the model to focus on the identity-consistent temporal contexts of each object to obtain more comprehensive object representations and handle the rapid object appearance variations such as occlusion, motion blur, etc. However, realizing this goal on top of existing VID models faces low-efficiency problems due to their redundant region proposals and nonparallel frame-wise prediction manner. To aid this, we propose ClipVID, a VID model equipped with Identity-Consistent Aggregation (ICA) layers specifically designed for mining fine-grained and identity-consistent temporal contexts. It effectively reduces the redundancies through the set prediction strategy, making the ICA layers very efficient and further allowing us to design an architecture that makes parallel clip-wise predictions for the whole video clip. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method: a state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance (84.7% mAP) on the ImageNet VID dataset while running at a speed about 7x faster (39.3 fps) than previous SOTAs., Comment: to be appeared at ICCV2023

In text-video retrieval, recent works have benefited from the powerful learning capabilities of pre-trained text-image foundation models (e.g., CLIP) by adapting them to the video domain. A critical problem for them is how to effectively capture the rich semantics inside the video using the image encoder of CLIP. To tackle this, state-of-the-art methods adopt complex cross-modal modeling techniques to fuse the text information into video frame representations, which, however, incurs severe efficiency issues in large-scale retrieval systems as the video representations must be recomputed online for every text query. In this paper, we discard this problematic cross-modal fusion process and aim to learn semantically-enhanced representations purely from the video, so that the video representations can be computed offline and reused for different texts. Concretely, we first introduce a spatial-temporal "Prompt Cube" into the CLIP image encoder and iteratively switch it within the encoder layers to efficiently incorporate the global video semantics into frame representations. We then propose to apply an auxiliary video captioning objective to train the frame representations, which facilitates the learning of detailed video semantics by providing fine-grained guidance in the semantic space. With a naive temporal fusion strategy (i.e., mean-pooling) on the enhanced frame representations, we obtain state-of-the-art performances on three benchmark datasets, i.e., MSR-VTT, MSVD, and LSMDC., Comment: to be appeared in ICCV2023

A spanning tree $T$ of graph $G$ is a $\rho$-approximate universal Steiner tree (UST) for root vertex $r$ if, for any subset of vertices $S$ containing $r$, the cost of the minimal subgraph of $T$ connecting $S$ is within a $\rho$ factor of the minimum cost tree connecting $S$ in $G$. Busch et al. (FOCS 2012) showed that every graph admits $2^{O(\sqrt{\log n})}$-approximate USTs by showing that USTs are equivalent to strong sparse partition hierarchies (up to poly-logs). Further, they posed poly-logarithmic USTs and strong sparse partition hierarchies as open questions. We settle these open questions by giving polynomial-time algorithms for computing both $O(\log ^ 7 n)$-approximate USTs and poly-logarithmic strong sparse partition hierarchies. For graphs with constant doubling dimension or constant pathwidth we improve this to $O(\log n)$-approximate USTs and $O(1)$ strong sparse partition hierarchies. Our doubling dimension result is tight up to second order terms. Practical object detection application can lose its effectiveness on image inputs with natural distribution shifts. This problem leads the research community to pay more attention on the robustness of detectors under Out-Of-Distribution (OOD) inputs. Existing works construct datasets to benchmark the detector's OOD robustness for a specific application scenario, e.g., Autonomous Driving. However, these datasets lack universality and are hard to benchmark general detectors built on common tasks such as COCO. To give a more comprehensive robustness assessment, we introduce COCO-O(ut-of-distribution), a test dataset based on COCO with 6 types of natural distribution shifts. COCO-O has a large distribution gap with training data and results in a significant 55.7% relative performance drop on a Faster R-CNN detector. We leverage COCO-O to conduct experiments on more than 100 modern object detectors to investigate if their improvements are credible or just over-fitting to the COCO test set. Unfortunately, most classic detectors in early years do not exhibit strong OOD generalization. We further study the robustness effect on recent breakthroughs of detector's architecture design, augmentation and pre-training techniques. Some empirical findings are revealed: 1) Compared with detection head or neck, backbone is the most important part for robustness; 2) An end-to-end detection transformer design brings no enhancement, and may even reduce robustness; 3) Large-scale foundation models have made a great leap on robust object detection. We hope our COCO-O could provide a rich testbed for robustness study of object detection. Quantum secret sharing (QSS) allows a dealer to distribute a secret quantum state among a set of parties so that certain subsets can reconstruct the secret, while unauthorized subsets obtain no information. While QSS was introduced over twenty years ago, previous works focused only on existence of perfectly secure schemes, and the share size of the known schemes is exponential even for access structures computed by polynomial size monotone circuits. This stands in contrast to the classical case, where efficient computationally-secure schemes have been long known for all access structures in $\mathsf{monotone~P}$, and one can even obtain shares which are much shorter than the secret which is impossible with perfect security. In this work, we initiate the study of computationally-secure QSS and show that computational assumptions help significantly in building QSS schemes. We present a simple compiler and use it to obtain a large variety results: We construct polynomial-time QSS schemes under standard assumptions for a rich class of access structures. This includes many access structures for which previous results in QSS required exponential share size. We also construct QSS schemes for which the size of the shares is significantly smaller than the size of the secret. As in the classical case, this is impossible with perfect security. We also use our compiler to obtain results beyond computational QSS. In the information-theoretic setting, we improve the share size of perfect QSS schemes for a large class of access structures to $1.5^{n+o(n)}$, improving upon best known schemes and matching the best known result for general access structures in the classical case. Finally, we show construct efficient schemes for all access structures in $\mathsf{P}$ and $\mathsf{NP}$ when the quantum secret sharing scheme is given multiple of copies of the secret.

Acting as a highly nonlinear response to the strong laser field, high harmonic generation (HHG) naturally contains the fingerprints of atomic and electronic properties of materials. Electronic properties of a solid such as band structure and topology can thus be probed, while the phonon dynamics during HHG are often neglected. Here we show that by exploiting the effects of phonon deformation on HHG, the intrinsic phonon information can be deciphered and direct probing of band- and mode-resolved electron-phonon couplings (EPC) of photoexcited materials is possible. Considering HHG spectroscopy can be vacuum free and unrestricted to electron occupation, this work suggests HHG is promising for all-optical characterization of EPC in solids, especially for gapped quantum states or materials under high pressure.

The local geometrical randomness of metal foams brings complexities to the performance prediction of porous structures. Although the relative density is commonly deemed as the key factor, the stochasticity of internal cell sizes and shapes has an apparent effect on the porous structural behaviour but the corresponding measurement is challenging. To address this issue, we are aimed to develop an assessment strategy for efficiently examining the foam properties by combining multiscale modelling and deep learning. The multiscale modelling is based on the finite element (FE) simulation employing representative volume elements (RVEs) with random cellular morphologies, mimicking the typical features of closed-cell Aluminium foams. A deep learning database is constructed for training the designed convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to establish a direct link between the mesoscopic porosity characteristics and the effective Youngs modulus of foams. The error range of CNN models leads to an uncertain mechanical performance, which is further evaluated in a structural uncertainty analysis on the FG porous three-layer beam consisting of two thin high-density layers and a thick low-density one, where the imprecise CNN predicted moduli are represented as triangular fuzzy numbers in double parametric form. The uncertain beam bending deflections under a mid-span point load are calculated with the aid of Timoshenko beam theory and the Ritz method. Our findings suggest the success in training CNN models to estimate RVE modulus using images with an average error of 5.92%. We generalize Einstein's General Relativity (GR) by assuming that all matter (including macro-objects) has quantum effects. An appropriate theory to fulfill this task is Gauge Theory Gravity (GTG) developed by the Cambridge group. GTG is a ``spin-torsion" theory, according to which, gravitational effects are described by a pair of gauge fields defined over a flat Minkowski background spacetime. The matter content is completely described by the Dirac spinor field, and the quantum effects of matter are identified as the spin tensor derived from the spinor field. The existence of the spin of matter results in the torsion field defined over spacetime. Torsion field plays the role of Bohmian quantum potential which turns out to be a kind of repulsive force as opposed to the gravitational potential which is attractive. The equivalence principle remains and essential in this theory so that GR is relegated to a locally approximate theory wherein the quantum effects (torsion) are negligible. As a toy model, we assume that the macro matter content can be described by the covariant Dirac equation and apply this theory to the simplest radially symmetric and static gravitational systems. Evacuation planning is a crucial part of disaster management. However, joint optimization of its two essential components, routing and scheduling, with objectives such as minimizing average evacuation time or evacuation completion time, is a computationally hard problem. To approach it, we present MIP-LNS, a scalable optimization method that utilizes heuristic search with mathematical optimization and can optimize a variety of objective functions. We also present the method MIP-LNS-SIM, where we combine agent-based simulation with MIP-LNS to estimate delays due to congestion, as well as, find optimized plans considering such delays. We use Harris County in Houston, Texas, as our study area. We show that, within a given time limit, MIP-LNS finds better solutions than existing methods in terms of three different metrics. However, when congestion dependent delay is considered, MIP-LNS-SIM outperforms MIP-LNS in multiple performance metrics. In addition, MIP-LNS-SIM has a significantly lower percent error in estimated evacuation completion time compared to MIP-LNS.

The nature of multiple samples to extract correlation information limits the applications of ghost imaging of moving objects. A novel multi-to-one neural network is proposed and the concept of "batch frame" is introduced to improve the serial imaging method. The neural network extracts more correlation information from a small number of samples, thus reducing the sampling ratio of the ghost imaging technique. We combine the correlation characteristics between images to propose a frame merging algorithm, which eliminates the dynamic blur of high-speed moving objects and further improves the reconstruction quality of moving object images at a low sampling ratio. In the quantum-computation scenario, geometric phase-gates are becoming increasingly attractive for their intrinsic fault tolerance to disturbance. With an adiabatic cyclic evolution, Berry phase appears to realize a geometric transformation. Performing the quantum gates as many as possible within the timescale of coherence, however, remains an inconvenient bottleneck due to the systematic errors. Here we propose an accelerated adiabatic quantum gate based on the Berry phase, the transitionless driving, and the dynamical decoupling. It reconciles a high fidelity with a high speed in the presence of control noise or imperfection. We optimize the dynamical-decoupling sequence in the time domain under a popular Gaussian noise spectrum following the inversely quadratic power-law., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures
