Abstract Crop wild relatives (CWR) provide a valuable resource for improving crops. They possess desirable traits that confer resilience to various environmental stresses. To fully utilize crop wild relatives in breeding and conservation programs, it is important to understand the genetic basis of their adaptation. Landscape genomics associates environments with genomic variation and allows for examining the genetic basis of adaptation. Our study examined the differences in allele frequency of 15,416 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) generated through genotyping by sequencing approach among 153 accessions of 15 wild eggplant relatives and two cultivated species from Africa, the principal hotspot of these wild relatives. We also explored the correlation between these variations and the bioclimatic and soil conditions at their collection sites, providing a comprehensive understanding of the genetic signals of environmental adaptation in African wild eggplant. Redundancy analysis (RDA) results showed that the environmental variation explained 6% while the geographical distances among the collection sites explained 15% of the genomic variation in the eggplant wild relative populations when controlling for population structure. Our findings indicate that even though environmental factors are not the main driver of selection in eggplant wild relatives, it is influential in shaping the genomic variation over time. The selected environmental variables and candidate SNPs effectively revealed grouping patterns according to the environmental characteristics of sampling sites. Using four genotype–environment association methods, we detected 396 candidate SNPs (2.5% of the initial SNPs) associated with eight environmental factors. Some of these SNPs signal genes involved in pathways that help adapt to environmental stresses such as drought, heat, cold, salinity, pests, and diseases. These candidate SNPs will be useful for marker‐assisted improvement and characterizing the germplasm of this crop for developing climate‐resilient eggplant varieties. The study provides a model for applying landscape genomics to other crops' wild relatives.

AbstractLow-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a kind of therapeutic ultrasound. It can help improve bone fracture repair and soft tissue healing. Our previous study found that LIPUS treatment could halt the chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression in mice; unexpectedly, we observed the improvement of CKD-reduced muscle weights by LIPUS treatment. Here, we further tested the protective potential of LIPUS on CKD-associated muscle wasting/sarcopenia using the CKD mouse models. Mouse models of both unilateral renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) with nephrectomy and adenine administration were used to induce CKD. LIPUS with condition of 3 MHz, 100 mW/cm2, 20 min/day was applied to the kidney of CKD mice. LIPUS treatment significantly reversed the increased serum BUN/creatinine levels in CKD mice. LIPUS effectively prevented the decrease in grip strength, muscle weight (soleus, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius muscles), cross-section areas of muscle fibres, and muscular phosphorylated Akt protein expression by immunohistochemistry, and the increase in muscular atrogenes Atrogin1 and MuRF1 protein expression by immunohistochemistry in CKD mice. These results indicated that LIPUS could help improve weak muscle strength, muscle mass loss, muscle atrophy-related protein expression, and Akt inactivation. LIPUS application may be an alternative non-invasive therapeutic intervention on the management of CKD-associated muscle wasting.

Abstract Contaminated food with antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus spp. could be the vehicle for transmitting Enterococcus to humans and accordingly cause a public health problem. The accumulation of biogenic amines produced by Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) in food may have cytological effects. Bacteriophages (phage in short) are natural antimicrobial agents and can be used alone or in combination with other food preservatives to reduce food microbial contaminants. The aim of this study was to isolate a novel phage against E. faecalis and determine its host range to evaluate its potential application. Bacteriophage, vB_EfKS5, with a broad host range, was isolated to control the growth of E. faecalis. The vB_EfKS5 genome is 59,246 bp in length and has a GC content of 39.7%. The computational analysis of phage vB_EfKS5 genome confirmed that it does not contain any lysogenic, toxic, or virulent genes. Phage vB_EfKS5 exhibited lytic activity against most E. faecalis isolates with different multiplicities of infections and it infected 75.5% (22/29) of E. faecalis isolates and 42.3% (3/7) of E. faecium isolates. It was also able to destroy the biofilm formed by E. faecalis with different MOIs. Phage vB_EfKS5 alone or in combination with nisin could control the growth of E. faecalis in broth and milk. Based on its high productivity, stability, short latent period, and large burst size, phage vB_EfKS5 has a high potential for applications both in food and medical applications.

Abstract Background To report a case of simultaneous occurrence of acute exacerbation of ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and anterior uveitis following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. Case presentation A 60-year-old man with primary myelofibrosis and GVHD after receiving allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), developed acute exacerbation of ocular GVHD and anterior uveitis after receiving first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The patient developed erythema of the eyelids, conjunctival hyperemia, superficial punctate keratopathy, and prominent anterior chamber inflammation in both eyes. The ocular GVHD and anterior uveitis were managed with mainly topical corticosteroids, antibiotics, lubricants, and systemic corticosteroids, but were difficult to control. Intravitreal injection of dexamethasone was administered, and the inflammation gradually subsided 6 months after the onset of initial symptoms. Conclusions Clinicians should be aware of rare refractory anterior uveitis and acute exacerbation of ocular GVHD after COVID-19 vaccination in patients undergoing HSCT. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment should be considered to reduce the likelihood of severe complications.

This study introduces a groundbreaking slap-type Vibration Energy Harvesting (VEH) system, leveraging a rotating shaft with magnets to induce vibrations in an adjacent elastic steel sheet through magnetic repulsion. This unique design causes the elastic sheet to vibrate, initiating the oscillation of a seesaw-type rigid plate lever. The lever then slaps a piezoelectric patch (PZT) at the elastic steel sheet’s root, converting vibrations into electrical energy. Notably, the design enables the PZT to withstand deformation and flapping forces simultaneously, enhancing power conversion efficiency. The driving force for the rotating shaft is harnessed from the downstream flow field generated by moving objects like rotorcraft, fixed-wing aircraft, motorcycles, and bicycles. Beyond conventional vibration energy harvesting, this design taps into additional electric energy generated by the PZT’s slapping force. This study includes mathematical modeling of nonlinear elastic beams, utilizing the Method of Multiple Scales (MOMS) for in-depth vibration mode analysis. Experimental validation ensures the convergence of theory and practice, confirming the feasibility and superior voltage generation efficiency of this slap-type VEH concept compared to traditional VEH systems.

Abstract HLA‐G is considered as an immune checkpoint protein and a tumor‐associated antigen. In the previous work, it is reported that CAR‐NK targeting of HLA‐G can be used to treat certain solid tumors. However, the frequent co‐expression of PD‐L1 and HLA‐G) and up‐regulation of PD‐L1 after adoptive immunotherapy may decrease the effectiveness of HLA‐G‐CAR. Therefore, simultaneous targeting of HLA‐G and PD‐L1 by multi‐specific CAR could represent an appropriate solution. Furthermore, gamma‐delta T (γδT) cells exhibit MHC‐independent cytotoxicity against tumor cells and possess allogeneic potential. The utilization of nanobodies offers flexibility for CAR engineering and the ability to recognize novel epitopes. In this study, Vδ2 γδT cells are used as effector cells and electroporated with an mRNA‐driven, nanobody‐based HLA‐G‐CAR with a secreted PD‐L1/CD3ε Bispecific T‐cell engager (BiTE) construct (Nb‐CAR.BiTE). Both in vivo and in vitro experiments reveal that the Nb‐CAR.BiTE‐γδT cells could effectively eliminate PD‐L1 and/or HLA‐G‐positive solid tumors. The secreted PD‐L1/CD3ε Nb‐BiTE can not only redirect Nb‐CAR‐γδT but also recruit un‐transduced bystander T cells against tumor cells expressing PD‐L1, thereby enhancing the activity of Nb‐CAR‐γδT therapy. Furthermore, evidence is provided that Nb‐CAR.BiTE redirectes γδT into tumor‐implanted tissues and that the secreted Nb‐BiTE is restricted to the tumor site without apparent toxicity.

Purpose: Despite the well-recognized importance of recycled water, the study of industry-peer pressure on recycled water is relatively new. This study investigates how organizations experience and react to industry-peer pressure to set recycled water targets. Additionally, this study investigates the role of board chairs involved in sustainability committees in contributing to responses to industry-peer pressure. Design/methodology/approach: Using Eviews 12, this study employed a pooled logistic regression model to analyze data from 1,346 firms on Taiwan and Taipei exchanges (2017–2020). Findings: The findings revealed that frequency-based imitation drives recycled water target-setting diffusion. However, there is no direct relationship between outcome-based imitation and recycled water target-setting. Notably, outcome-based imitation drives the adoption of recycled water target-setting of firms with board-chair membership in sustainability committees. Research limitations/implications: This study faces certain data limitations. First, this study primarily focuses on water recycling. Future research could explore other ways to reduce water usage, such as using water-efficient equipment. Second, this study gathered information solely on the presence or absence of a board chairperson on the sustainability committee. Future researchers could explore the impact of the composition of sustainability committee on recycled water target-setting. Lastly, the sample used in this study is restricted to Taiwan's corporations that existed during 2017–2020. Future researchers may consider adopting a longitudinal design in other economies to address this limitation. Practical implications: The findings of this study offer several guidelines and implications for recycled water target-setting and the composition of sustainability committees. It responds to an urgent call for solutions to water shortages when pressure from governments and nongovernmental organizations is relatively absent. The number of industry peers that have already set recycled water targets is indispensable for motivating firms to set their own recycled water targets. In terms of insufficient water-related regulatory pressure and normative pressure, this study found evidence suggesting that the direct motivation for setting recycled water targets stems from mimetic pressures via frequency-based imitation. The evidence in this study suggests that policymakers should require companies to disclose their peers' recycled water target information, as doing so serves as an alternative means to achieving SDG 6.3. Social implications: Recycled water target-setting might be challenging. Water recycling practices may face strong resistance and require substantial additional resources (Zhang and Tang, 2019; Gao et al., 2019; Gu et al., 2023). Therefore, this study suggests that firms should ensure the mindfulness of board members in promoting the welfare of the natural environment when making recycled water target-setting decisions. To reap the second-mover advantage, firms must consider the conditions in which board members can more effectively play their role. Corporations may help their chairpersons in setting recycled water targets by recruiting them as members of sustainability committees. Meanwhile, chairpersons tend to activate accurate mental models when the water conservation performance of pioneering industry peers is strong enough to indicate the potential benefits of adopting recycled water target-setting. Investors' and stakeholders' understanding of how the composition of sustainability committees is related to recycled water target-setting may help to identify the potential drivers of firms' water responsibility. Investors and stakeholders should distinguish firms in terms of the board chair's membership of their sustainability committee and focus on water-use reduction outcomes in the industry. This study provides insights into circumstances whereby chairpersons help to restore the water ecosystem. Originality/value: This study explains how frequency-based and outcome-based imitation are two prominent mechanisms underlying the industry-peer pressure concerning recycled water target-setting. Moreover, this study fills literature gaps related to the moderating roles of board-chair membership in sustainability committees concerning industry-peer pressure on recycled water target-setting. Commercial laser interferometers are conventionally used to measure the positioning error of a long linear stage in multiaxis computer numerical control machine tools. However, commercial laser interferometers are costly and difficult to use. Therefore, a low-cost photodetector-based heterodyne interferometer combined with an electronic phasemeter module was proposed for precise measurement of the positioning error of a long linear stage. The proposed heterodyne interferometer was combined with a virtual electronic phasemeter that employs a self-developed signal-processing technique. Our core algorithm and proposed photoelectric-signal-processing technique were developed using the LabVIEW human–machine interface. Moreover, to verify the performance of the proposed heterodyne interferometer, a laboratory-built prototype was constructed and used to measure the positioning error of a long linear stage. The experimental results indicated that the positioning accuracy of the proposed interferometer was ±4.5 μm for a linear stage with a displacement of 250 mm; the results obtained were comparable to those obtained with a commercially available laser interferometer. The proposed heterodyne interferometer can thus be used in other applications related to precision engineering.

Thin films of single-phase ruthenium aluminide (RuAl) intermetallic compound were deposited by magnetron co-sputtering. An ordered B2 body-centered cubic structure of high crystallinity was formed after rapid thermal annealing at 800 °C for 1 min. Data fittings using the Fuchs–Sondheimer and Mayadas–Shatzkes models suggested the very short mean free path of electrons of below 5 nm and the high specularity parameter of 0.9. The short mean free path and the much reduced diffuse scattering of electrons at the interface effectively suppressed the resistivity scaling of the B2 RuAl intermetallic compound as compared to ruthenium metal. At an ultra-small film thickness of below 5 nm, the reflection of electrons by grain boundaries or domain walls might alternatively dominate the increase in resistivity. The RuAl intermetallic compound with an ordered B2 structure and a high cohesive energy (a large negative mixing enthalpy) also demonstrated a superior thermal stability at an extreme temperature up to 900 °C. It could be a promising candidate for potential use as the next-generation interconnect metallization without the need of a diffusion barrier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the dnaK gene-deletion mutant strain of Escherichia coli BW25113 showed a higher susceptibility than the wild-type strain of E. coli BW25113 to phage S127BCL3. Flavonoids, myricetin and quercetin which had been reported to suppress the role of DnaK were tested to examine their effects on the phage susceptibility of E. coli BW25113. A 6-h pretreatment with 500 µmol/L myricetin or quercetin increased the phage susceptibility of E. coli BW25113. A similar result was observed in E. coli O157:H7. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was conducted to investigate the effects of flavonoids on the transcription of chaperone genes (dnaK, dnaJ, groEL, and grpE) in E. coli. Pretreatment of wild-type E. coli BW25113 with flavonoids decreased the transcription of chaperone genes. This is the first report demonstrating the enhancement of the phage susceptibility of both E. coli BW25113 and E. coli O157:H7 by flavonoids. The results of this study on the combined effects of flavonoids involved in foods and phages on E. coli provide scientific bases for development of a novel biocontrol method of foodborne bacteria. Objective: In patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), epiglottic collapse (EC) constitutes a major factor in the failure of continuous positive airway pressure therapy and uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. This study explored treatments that can improve EC in patients with OSA through drug‐induced sleep endoscopy with target‐controlled infusion (TCI‐DISE). Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: Tertiary center. Methods: This study screened 352 OSA patients who underwent TCI‐DISE between 2016 and 2022. Fifty‐four patients with EC were included in the final analysis. EC severity was assessed multiple times through TCI‐DISE with different interventions. Results: The application of these interventions in patients with anteroposterior epiglottic collapse (apEC) led to a significant decrease in apEC severity from total to partial or no obstruction in 60.0% of patients by head rotation, in 53.6% by mouth closure, in 47.4% who received oral appliances (OA), and in 28.0% who received intermittent negative airway pressure (iNAP). With simultaneous head rotation, apEC severity decreased more significantly from total to partial or no obstruction in 77.8% of patients by mouth closure, in 70.3% who received OA, and in 68.0% who received iNAP. Lateral epiglottic collapse (latEC) severity decreased in 53.8% of patients after OA use and in 61.5% of patients with OA use and head rotation. Conclusion: This study identified head rotation with mouth closure as the most effective treatment for apEC through TCI‐DISE. Patients with latEC had higher weight, apnea‐hypopnea index, and body mass index compared with patients with apEC. OA use with head rotation appeared more effective in latEC through TCI‐DISE.
