The aim of this study was to develop a scale to measure students' blended learning course experience. A total of 792 undergraduate students from Malaysia participated in this study. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was employed to evaluate the factor structure of the scale. As a result of EFA, three factors with 19 items that explained 68.06% of the total variance were obtained. The three factors are: course design, learning experience, and personal factors. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to establish the structural validity of the scale, and item discrimination was conducted to validate the scale. The Cronbach's coefficients (α) for the factors ranged from.71 to.95. The overall Cronbach's coefficient (α) of the scale was.92, demonstrating a satisfactory level of reliability. The purpose of this study was to analyze visual attention during students' learning of Toulmin's argument pattern (TAP) and the effects of epistemic beliefs in science on the understanding of argument components. A total of 43 undergraduates were recruited through the Internet. Online questionnaires targeting beliefs about knowledge in science [Conley, A. M., Pintrich, P. R., Vekiri, I., & Harrison, D. (2004). Changes in epistemological beliefs in elementary science students. Contemporary Educational Psychology, 29(2), 186–204] and beliefs about justification for knowing in science [Ferguson, L. E., & Bråten, I. (2013). Student profiles of knowledge and epistemic beliefs: Changes and relations to multiple-text comprehension. Learning and Instruction, 25, 49–61] were used to assess students' epistemic beliefs. Identification tests for the understanding of TAP were performed before and after an argument reading treatment designed as a self-learning activity. The whole reading process was recorded by the eye-tracking system. To explore the effect of the reading treatment, participants were divided into a progress (P) group and a no-progress (NP) group based on their learning gains.The results indicated that students' epistemic beliefs in science and their learning strategies would affect their TAP learning performance. The analyses of visual attention distribution indicated that integration information indicated by inter-scanning counts would enhance students' learning performance. In addition, the LSA results suggested that understanding of data is of primary importance when learning TAP. Suggestions on how to guide students in learning TAP are provided based on the findings. Background: An intravenous port, which differs from a central venous catheter, has an injection chamber at the end of the catheter. This structural difference causes the irrigation flow pattern to be quite different from that of the central venous catheter. Furthermore, the intraluminal volume differs due to the size of the injection chamber and implanted catheter length. Hence, the ideal recommended irrigation volume varies because of differences in intraluminal volume, however, the recommended irrigation volume is 10 ml and may be a cause for reported port malfunctions. This study investigates the best irrigation volume for an intravenous port by simulating the clinical scenario ex-vivo to access its usefulness. Materials and methods: This study was composed of two tests. The irrigation volume test attempted to quantify the irrigation volume of an implanted port while the irrigation rate test attempted to simulate daily nursing practice in order to clarify the effect of irrigation flow. The human blood needed for the simulation was donated by volunteers and the total volume was 10 ml per test. The irrigation volume test was done by syringe pump with varying pre-set irrigation volume after the port and connected catheter were filled with volunteer blood. After irrigation with pre-set volume, the retained intraluminal solution was collected and quantified by Bradford assay in order to titrate the best irrigation volume. The irrigation rate test tried to simulate daily maintenance practice in different settings with the quantified irrigation volume as identified by the irrigation volume test. Results: In both SVC and IVC ports, we identified the twenty times the intravascular volume as sufficient for a complete wash out of the blood component in the irrigation volume test. The minimal irrigation volume for SVC and IVC port were 10 ml and 15.6 ml respectively. In irrigation rate test, the irrigation for SVC and IVC port was 10 and 20 ml, respectively, for the sake of preparation convenience. We not only identified the importance of preparation, i.e. irrigation of the extension line but also confirmed the efficacy of the recommended irrigation volume. Conclusion: The irrigation volume should be varied according to the intraluminal volume. Maintenance should be performed after the extension line has been irrigated. Abstract: Intracellular protein trafficking is tightly regulated, and improper trafficking might be the fundamental provocateur for human diseases including neurodegeneration. In neurons, protein trafficking to and from the plasma membrane affects synaptic plasticity. Voltage‐gated potassium channel 2.1 (Kv2.1) is a predominant delayed rectifier potassium (K+) current, and electrical activity patterns of dopamine (DA) neurons within the substantia nigra are generated and modulated by the orchestrated function of different ion channels. The pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) is the progressive loss of these DA neurons, resulting in the degeneration of striatal dopaminergic terminals. However, whether trafficking of Kv2.1 channels contributes to PD remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that MPTP/MPP+ increases the surface expression of the Kv2.1 channel and causes nigrostriatal degeneration by using a subchronic MPTP mouse model. The inhibition of the Kv2.1 channel by using a specific blocker, guangxitoxin‐1E, protected nigrostriatal projections against MPTP/MPP+ insult and thus facilitated the recovery of motor coordination. The article presents a study which examined the effectiveness of the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) model to identify possible chemotherapy process failures. Also cited are some areas where failures could occur including during ordering, preparation, and compounding of medications, as well as some possible errors in the chemotherapy process like underdosing, improper drug preparations, and timing errors.

Background: Collaborative computer simulations are available on some online platforms which support students at distributed locations to synchronously collaborate on the simulations to learn sciences. However, how students collaborate with each other in collaborative simulations is not clear. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether functional interdependency would influence learning. Methods: Two collaborative learning models with different functional interdependencies were examined (the synchronous model and the distributed accountability model). Multiple data sources obtained from 64 students were collected and analyzed. We discuss the collaborative learning with two levels of factors: the individual‐level factors (i.e., individual perceptions of teamwork quality, visual attention and learning performance before and after a simulation activity) and the pair‐level factors (i.e., discourse data and joint attention). Given that the pair‐level factors in the collaborative learning environment may affect the individual‐level factors, we further discuss the interactions of the two levels of factors in different collaborative learning models with hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analysis. Results and Conclusions: The analytical results of the individual‐level factors found participants in the distributed accountability model demonstrated more frequent and longer attention to the learning activity. Furthermore, the results indicated that the two simulation learning activities would enhance the participants' learning performance except in Q2. For the pair‐level factors, the results demonstrated that the participants in the distributed accountability model showed more active discourse segments but similar joint attention patterns in the learning activity. The results of the HLM analysis indicated that the students in the distributed accountability model had to collaborate with their partners through more constructive dialogue, and focused on the same areas of interest to enhance their learning performance, as the complexity of the distributed accountability design was implemented in a simulation learning activity. Major takeaways: We found that the increase of functional interdependency cannot guarantee students' learning effect in collaborative learning and may hinder the communication that is needed during collaboration. Researcher may need to consider other collaboration tools to enhance the reciprocal reflection. Although AR technology seems to be promising for helping students learn complicated and abstract concepts, whether the positive effects of this new technology can be applied to the learning of three-dimensional geometric concepts, and what factors might mediate its effectiveness are questions worth further investigation. This study used the eye-tracking method to examine middle school students' learning of three-dimensional geometric concepts with AR-based instruction in comparison with a group of students who learned via paper-based instruction. Motivation and conceptual achievements were assessed using the Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS) questionnaire and Geometry Achievement Test (GAT), respectively. The results showed that while AR learners performed the same as the paper-based learners in the post concept test, the two groups differed significantly in terms of their motivation orientations and visual attention patterns. AR students were more satisfied with and engaged more in the corresponding instruction. To explore in-depth the effectiveness of the AR system, the AR participants were divided into improved and unimproved learners. The former displayed higher confidence in and perceived greater relevance of the AR instruction. Their attention to and engagement in the simple geometric concepts was higher. Correlation and regression analyses indicated that the performance of paper-based learners was affected by their visual attention, while the performance of the AR learners was predicted by their beliefs in the relevance of the material to the learning goals. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass, bone microarchitecture disruption, and collagen loss, leading to increased fracture risk. In the current study, collagen peptides were extracted from milkfish scales (MS) to develop potential therapeutic candidates for osteoporosis. MS was used to synthesize a crude extract of fish scales (FS), collagen liquid (COL), and hydroxyapatite powder (HA). COL samples were further categorized according to the peptide size of total COL (0.1 mg/mL), COL < 1 kDa (0.1 mg/mL), COL: 1–10 kDa (0.1 mg/mL), and COL > 10 kDa (0.1 mg/mL) to determine it. Semi‐quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (sqRT‐PCR) and immunofluorescence labeling were used to assess the expression levels of specific mRNA and proteins in vitro. For in vivo studies, mice ovariectomy (OVX)‐induced postmenopausal osteoporosis were developed, while the sham surgery (Sham) group was treated as a control. Collagen peptides (CP) from MS inhibited osteoclast differentiation in RAW264.7 cells following an insult with nuclear factor kappa‐B ligand (RANKL). CP also enhanced osteoblast proliferation in MG‐63 cells, possibly through downregulating NFATc1 and TRAP mRNA expression and upregulating ALP and OPG mRNA levels. Furthermore, COL1 kDa also inhibited bone density loss in osteoporotic mice. Taken together, CP may reduce RANKL‐induced osteoclast activity while promoting osteoblast synthesis, and therefore may act as a potential therapeutic agent for the prevention and control of osteoporosis. The purpose of this study was to compare the associations of epistemic beliefs in science, performance of scientific reasoning in university students from Taiwan and India, and the relations with their science learning experiences. A total of 126 university students including 67 from Taiwan and 59 from India who had science and mathematics backgrounds were involved in the study. Students' epistemic beliefs in science were assessed by the SEV questionnaire, while their reasoning performance and learning experiences were prompted by open-ended questions and survey items. Content analysis was performed to analyze their scientific reasoning, and correlation analysis, t tests and ANOVA were applied to reveal the associations between variables. The results showed that students from both countries differed in epistemic beliefs in the dimensions of certainty, development and justification. While few students from either country performed successfully in identifying genuine evidence and giving full rebuttals, Taiwanese participants seemed to demonstrate slightly better scientific reasoning. It was found that the Indian students were more balanced in receiving structured and engaged learning experiences. Varying associations for the students from the different countries were found between epistemic beliefs and scientific reasoning performance, and between epistemic beliefs and science learning experiences. Open in new tab Download slide OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to examine the impact of surgical learning curve on short-term clinical outcomes of patients after bilateral lung transplantation (LTx) performed by a surgical multidisciplinary team (MDT). METHODS Forty-two patients underwent double LTx from December 2016 to October 2021. All procedures were performed by a surgical MDT in a newly established LTx program. The time required for bronchial, left atrial cuff and pulmonary artery anastomoses was the main end point to assess surgical proficiency. The associations between the surgeon's experience and procedural duration were examined by linear regression analysis. We employed the simple moving average technique to generate learning curves and evaluated short-term outcomes before and after achieving surgical proficiency. RESULTS Both total operating time and total anastomosis time were inversely associated with the surgeon's experience. On analysing the learning curve for bronchial, left atrial cuff and pulmonary artery anastomoses using moving averages, the inflection points occurred at 20, 15 and 10 cases, respectively. To assess the learning curve effect, the study cohort was divided into early (cases 1–20) and late (cases 21–42) groups. Short-term outcomes—including intensive care unit stay, in-hospital stay and severe complications—were significantly more favourable in the late group. Furthermore, there was a notable tendency for patients in the late group to experience a decreased duration of mechanical ventilation along with reduced instances of grade 3 primary graft dysfunction. Diabetes nephropathy (DN) is one of the most common causes of end stage renal disease (ESRD) globally. Medication options to stop or slow the progression of chronic renal disease (CKD) are limited, and patients with DN remain at a high risk of developing renal failure. Inonotus obliquus extracts (IOEs) of Chaga mushroom have been shown to have anti-glycemic, anti-hyperlipidemia, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects against diabetes. In this study, we examined the potential renal protective role of an ethyl acetate layer after water-ethyl acetate separation from Inonotus obliquus ethanol crude extract (EtCE-EA) from Chaga mushrooms in diabetic nephropathy mice after preparation with 1/3 NT + STZ. Our data showed that treatment with EtCE-EA can effectively regulate blood glucose, albumin-creatinine ratio, serum creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels, and it can improve the renal damage in 1/3 NT + STZ-induced CRF mice with an increase in concentration (100, 300, and 500 mg/kg). In the immunohistochemical staining test, EtCE-EA can effectively reduce the expression of TGF-β and α-SMA after induction according to the increase in the concentration (100 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg), thereby slowing down the degree of kidney damage. Our findings demonstrate that EtCE-EA could provide renal protection in diabetes nephropathy, possibly due to the decreased expression of transforming growth factor-β1 and α-smooth muscle actin. A comprehensive study of dielectric modulated (DM) drift regions for power devices is presented in this paper. The performance of this structure is theoretically analyzed and compared with both conventional and superjunction (SJ) structures. In this paper, an analytical model for DM drift regions with cylindrical cells is proposed and compared with linear cells. An optimal tradeoff between breakdown voltage (BV) and specific ON-resistance ( R\scriptscriptstyle ON,sp) is obtained by a methodology developed in this paper. 3-D simulations of DM structures with hexagonal cells approximated by cylindrical cells are conducted to verify the analytical model. Optimal BV– R\scriptscriptstyle ON,sp tradeoffs for devices with conventional and SJ drift regions are also obtained through the same methodology and verified by 3-D simulations. A comprehensive study on the dielectric modulated (DM) drift region for power devices is presented in this paper. The performance of this drift region structure is theoretically analyzed and compared with other two structures: conventional and superjunction. In this paper, a study is focused on switching performance. The C – V relationships during switching are analytically derived, and the depletion widths predicted by the proposed analytical model agree well with simulation in a wide reverse bias region. The switching energy loss is evaluated based on the analytical model and its accuracy is verified by 2-D simulations. An effective depletion charge QD is defined as E\mathrm {loss} / breakdown voltage (BV), from which a figure of merit (FOM) of R\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON,\mathrm {sp}}{}^\ast QD is proposed to compare the performances of these different drift region structures, considering both the conduction and switching losses. The discussions in part I on Si and silicon carbide device structures are extended in part II to include FOMs. It is found that the DM drift region structures show better R\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON,\mathrm {sp}} -BV tradeoffs compared with the conventional structures, but slighter inferior FOMs. However, DM structures are still attractive for applications, where switching loss is less critical than the conduction loss, such as low frequency or soft switching. Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) Miq. (OA) is a traditional folk-herb, which is usually used to treat acute and chronic nephritis, epilepsy, cystitis, and other diseases. Phenols and flavonoids are the main active compound compounds of OA, with proven anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Based on evidenced therapeutic activities, we aimed to investigate the impact of OA on Alzheimer's disease (AD) which is the most common age-related neurodegenerative disease, and the pathological features include accumulation of beta-amyloid (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT). OA was extracted with water, methanol, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, and determined its total flavonoid and phenolic contents. Initially, Aβ 1-42 based cytotoxicity was induced in BV2 cells and C6 cells to investigate the therapeutic impact of OA therapy by MTT, RT-PCR, Western blot, and ELISA. Further, Aβ 1−42 Oligomer (400 pmol)-induced AD mice model was established to evaluate the impact of OA extract on improving learning and memory impairment. The results showed that the extract of OA could increase cell survival, inhibit the expression of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, COX-2, and iNOS, and increase BDNF levels. We infer that the OA extract may attenuate Aβ-induced cytotoxicity by retarding the production of inflammatory-related factors. In the animal behavior test, the number of mice entering darkroom and the time of arriving at the platform were significantly reduced, indicating the learning and memory-improving ability of OA extract. These findings imply that the OA ethanolic extract demonstrated an improving effect on memory and hence could serve as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases like AD. • Paraquat is an herbicide which causes irreversible toxicity in humans and animals. • CO-releasing molecules is a potential treatment for ROS generation and inflammation caused by paraquat. • CORM-A1 reduced profibrogenic cytokines (COX-2, TNF-α and α-SMA) of paraquat-treated lung tissue. • CORM-A1 alleviated paraquat-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice. Paraquat, an herbicide used extensively worldwide, can cause severe toxicity in humans and animals, leading to irreversible, lethal lung fibrosis. The potential of CO-releasing molecules (CORMs), substances that release CO (Carbon monoxide) within animal tissues, for treating paraquat-induced ROS generation and inflammation is investigated here. Our results show that the fast CO releaser CORM-3 (4-20 μM) acts as a potential scavenger of free radicals and decreases fibrosis progression by inhibiting paraquat-induced overexpression of connective tissue growth factor and angiotensin II in MRC-5 cells. The slow CO releaser CORM-A1 (5 mg/kg) clearly decreased expression of the lung profibrogenic cytokines COX-2, TNF-α, and α-SMA and serum hydroxyproline, resulting in a lower mortality rate in paraquat-treated mice. Mice treated with higher-dose CORM-A1 (10 mg/kg) had relatively intact lung lobes and fewer fibrotic patches by gross observation, with less collagen deposition, mesangial matrix accumulation, and pulmonary fibrosis resulting from the mitigation of TGF-β overexpression. In conclusion, our data demonstrate for the first time that CORM-A1 alleviated the development of the fibrotic process and improved survival rate in mice exposed to PQ, would be an attractive therapeutic approach to attenuate the progression of pulmonary fibrosis following PQ exposure.
