Proper timing of vigilance states serves fundamental brain functions. Although disturbance of sleep onset rapid eye movement (SOREM) sleep is frequently reported after orexin deficiency, their causal relationship still remains elusive. Here, we further study a specific subgroup of orexin neurons with convergent projection to the REM sleep promoting sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus (OXSLD neurons). Intriguingly, although OXSLD and other projection-labeled orexin neurons exhibit similar activity dynamics during REM sleep, only the activation level of OXSLD neurons exhibits a significant positive correlation with the post-inter-REM sleep interval duration, revealing an essential role for the orexin-sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus (SLD) neural pathway in relieving REM sleep pressure. Monosynaptic tracing reveals that multiple inputs may help shape this REM sleep-related dynamics of OXSLD neurons. Genetic ablation further shows that the homeostatic architecture of sleep/wakefulness cycles, especially avoidance of SOREM sleep-like transition, is dependent on this activity. A positive correlation between the SOREM sleep occurrence probability and depression states of narcoleptic patients further demonstrates the possible significance of the orexin-SLD pathway on REM sleep homeostasis.

Flooding and drought are the two most devastating natural hazards limiting maize production. Exogenous glycinebetaine (GB), an osmotic adjustment agent, has been extensively used but there is limited research on its role in mitigating the negative effects of different abiotic stresses. This study aims to identify the different roles of GB in regulating the diverse defense regulation of maize against drought and flooding. Hybrids of Yindieyu 9 and Heyu 397 grown in pots in a ventilated greenhouse were subjected to flooding (2–3 cm standing layer) and drought (40–45% field capacity) at the three-leaf stage for 8 d. The effects of different concentrations of foliar GB (0, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mM) on the physiochemical attributes and growth of maize were tested. Greater drought than flooding tolerance in both varieties to combat oxidative stress was associated with higher antioxidant activities and proline content. While flooding decreased superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase (POD) activities and proline content compared to normal water, they all declined with stress duration, leading to a larger reactive oxygen species compared to drought. It was POD under drought stress and ascorbate peroxidase under flooding stress that played crucial roles in tolerating water stress. Foliar GB further enhanced antioxidant ability and contributed more effects to POD to eliminate more hydrogen peroxide than the superoxide anion, promoting growth, especially for leaves under water stress. Furthermore, exogenous GB made a greater increment in Heyu 397 than Yindieyu 9, as well as flooding compared to drought. Overall, a GB concentration of 5.0 mM, with a non-toxic effect on well-watered maize, was determined to be optimal for the effective mitigation of water-stress damage to the physiochemical characteristics and growth of maize.

Bacillus thuringiensis Q1, isolated from the eutrophic waters of the Haihe River in Tianjin, possesses remarkable algae dissolving character. We determined the lytic effect of B. thuringiensis Q1 fermentation broth, and it proved to be pH- and temperature-stable. Then, we investigated the structure of the algicidal compound by high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and identified as purine-derived C12H15O5N5. To further understand B. thuringiensis Q1, we performed genome sequencing and analysis. The genome was 5341610 bp, with 35.31% GC content. Some elements involved in algicidal activity, such as quorum sensing pathway and ABC transporter were predicted. Our results reveal that B. thuringiensis Q1 can be used for biological control of harmful algal blooms.

Abstract Background Anxiety and depression are two common psychological disorders in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. We aimed to explore the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) on psychological stress and quality of life in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Methods From September 2018 to November 2018, 20 communities (461 participants in total) were randomly assigned in an intervention or control group following a two-level cluster random design. The intervention group underwent CBT for 2 months, whereas the control group received routine follow-up. Anxiety, depression, and quality of life were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), General Anxiety Disorder questionnaire (GAD-7), and 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) scales, respectively. Comparisons between the two groups were conducted using independent samples t-tests, and differences between the two groups before and after treatment were analyzed using paired samples t-tests. In this work, the motions of methylammonium cations (MA) in different phase structures of MAPbCl3 perovskites, including orthorhombic, tetragonal and cubic phases, were studied by solid-state 2H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). By a combination of experimental 2H NMR and numerical simulations, the motion models in different phase structures of MAPbCl3 were established in this work. The NMR results disclosed the characteristics of the motions of MA in different phase structures. In the orthorhombic phase, the MA cations are not completely frozen but wobble locally while rapidly rotating around the C-N bond. As the temperature increases, MA cations show various modes of motion in the perovskite lattice. The NMR results also showed that the changes of the motions of MA in different temperatures are not accompanied by the changes of phase structures. The observations in this work will deepen our understanding of the molecular mechanism of the MAPbCl3 phase transitions.

Landslides are one of the most common catastrophic mass flows in mountainous areas. The occurrence of fragmentation leads to the evolution of the integrity and stiffness of the sliding mass. The changes in internal composition caused by basal erosion and entrainment make the dynamic evolution of landslides more complex. To consider these complex processes, physics-based dynamic models are often used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of landslides. However, the proprietary assumptions of dynamic models often limit their application to complex events. A single dynamic model is often not competent for the analysis of landslides with evolving dynamic characteristics. In this study, two dynamic models are effectively integrated according to the evolving characteristics of the landslide. The common effects of basal erosion and entrainment are also considered. The maximum sliding velocity, accumulation range, and erosion depth characteristics of this integrated dynamic model are more consistent with the field than those of the single dynamic model. Under the terrain conditions of this study, within a few seconds of the triggering stage, if the occurrence of disintegration is advanced by 2 s, the maximum impact area will increase by about 3.1% to 4.1%, and the maximum kinetic energy will increase by more than 20%. Simulation results indicate that the changes in the integrity of the landslide body significantly affect the evolution of subsequent landslide dynamic characteristics.

Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between types of disc displacement (DD) diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the risk (presence or absence) and severity of condylar erosion (CE) graded using cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) in adult Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients. Methods: A total of 353 TMD patients (283 females, 70 males) underwent MRI scans to categorise DD as normal (NA), anterior displacement with reduction (ADDR), or anterior displacement without reduction (ADDNR). CE severity was graded on a scale of 0–3 (absence, mild, moderate or severe) using CBCT. To establish the plausibility and cut‐off points for CE diagnosis, the severity of CE was then further divided into three classifications: Grade 0 versus 1 + 2 + 3; Grades 0 + 1 versus 2 + 3; Grades 0 + 1 + 2 versus 3. Logistic regression analysis was performed, adjusting for age, gender and joint correlation. Results: ADDNR significantly increased the risk of CE compared with NA (OR = 10.04, 95% CI: [6.41, 15.73]) and showed a significant increase in CE severity across all classifications (ORs = 10.04–18.95). The effects of ADDNR were significant in both genders (p <.001) and had a greater impact in females. ADDR was predominantly associated with mild CE. Conclusions: ADDNR significantly increased the risk and severity of CE independent of gender when compared to NA, whereas ADDR was mainly associated with mild CE. In order to study the interaction of organic matter with arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in natural water, standard dissolved organic matter (standard DOM) was taken as the research object, and the analysis was carried out by spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, parallel factor analysis and other methods. The results showed that compared with fulvic acids and humus, protein-like tyrosines showed higher binding capacity to As and Pb. The results of high-resolution mass spectrometry showed that heavy metals could change the original characteristics of the standard DOM, resulting in the transformation of organic matter, such as the decrease of amino carbohydrate components, the increase of tannin-like components, the decrease of the relative abundance of CHO, and the increase of the relative abundance of other heteroatoms. DOM-As showed that there was a strong positive correlation between the ultraviolet characteristic parameter a254 and the fluorescence characteristic parameter HIX, the amino sugar component and CHO obtained by ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry were positively correlated with the ultraviolet characteristic parameters a254, a260, a280 and the fluorescence characteristic parameter HIX, and the fluorescence component C1 was positively correlated with the unsaturated hydrocarbon component obtained by mass spectrometry. The results of the study may provide theoretical support for the quantitative assessment of the mechanism of organic matter-heavy metal interactions in water bodies, thereby reducing the environmental behavior of various pollutants such as heavy metals. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between temporomandibular joint (TMJ) effusion and TMJ pain, as well as jaw function limitation in patients via two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation. Patients and Methods: 121 patients diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) were included. TMJ effusion was assessed qualitatively using MRI and quantified with 3D Slicer software, then graded accordingly. In addition, a visual analogue scale (VAS) was employed for pain reporting and an 8-item Jaw Functional Limitations Scale (JFLS-8) was utilized to evaluate jaw function limitation. Statistical analyses were performed appropriately for group comparisons and association determination. A probability of p< 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: 2D qualitative and 3D quantitative strategies were in high agreement for TMJ effusion grades (κ = 0.766). No significant associations were found between joint effusion and TMJ pain, nor with disc displacement and JLFS-8 scores. Moreover, the binary logistic regression analysis showed significant association between sex and the presence of TMJ effusion, exhibiting an Odds Ratio of 5.168 for females (p = 0.008). Conclusion: 2D qualitative evaluation was as effective as 3D quantitative assessment for TMJ effusion diagnosis. No significant associations were found between TMJ effusion and TMJ pain, disc displacement or jaw function limitation. However, it was suggested that female patients suffering from TMD may be at a risk for TMJ effusion. Further prospective research is needed for validation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Approximately 25–30% of patients suffer from breast deformity and/or asymmetry after conventional breast-conserving surgery (CBCS). Generally, it is thought that oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (OBCS) results in an improved cosmetic result; however, studies comparing the prognosis and aesthetic outcomes of CBCS and OBCS in early breast cancer (EBC) are inadequate. Methods: A total of 143 patients were included in this retrospective cohort study; 53 underwent OBCS and 90 underwent CBCS. The resected weight, complications, esthetic results, patient satisfaction, and recurrence rate were compared between the groups. Patient-reported outcomes (PRO) were assessed by the BREAST-Q questionnaire. Results: The mean age of the patients in OBCS group was 43.8 years. This was younger than that in CBCS group (49.1 years, p < 0.001). Postoperative complications (11.3% vs. 8.9%, p = 0.64) and re-excision (5.7% vs. 6.7%, p > 0.99) rates were similar. The OBCS group had higher breast satisfaction and psychosocial well-being than the CBCS group (75 vs. 63, p < 0.001 and 84 vs. 77, p = 0.05); however, sexual well-being (56 vs. 66, p = 0.05) and physical well-being (65 vs. 76, p < 0.001) were worse in OBCS. After 42.3 (range: 12.6–69.2)-month median follow-up, no difference in event-free survival (EFS) was demonstrated between the groups (p = 0.13). Conclusion: Although OBCS has the better aesthetic outcomes and identical oncological safety in comparison with CBCS, the sexual and physical well-being in OBCS are not improved for Asian patients. Hence, choosing an appropriate procedure may be more important for the typically small to moderate-sized breasts characteristic of Asian females unlike Westerners. Context: Based on first principles, the structure, elasticity, mechanics, electronics, and optical properties of cubic K2Pb2O3 were studied. The structural parameters calculated by this method are close to the previous theoretical results. The elastic constant, bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and mechanical stability are studied, and it is shown that cubic K2Pb2O3 is mechanically stable, isotropic, and brittleness. The electrical conductivity and chemical bonding of cubic K2Pb2O3 were analyzed based on the calculated band structure, density of states (DOS), and bond populations. The dispersion of optical functions, including the dielectric function, refractive index, extinction coefficient, reflectivity, absorption coefficient, and loss function, is displayed and analyzed. Background: Sleep disorders are associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Limited studies have focused on excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and its impact on jaw functions in TMD patients. Objective: The aim of the present investigation was to identify the impact of EDS on pain and jaw function in TMD patients. Methods: A total of 338 TMD patients (50 males and 288 females) was included. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was used to classify patients into EDS group (score ≥ 10) and non‐EDS group (score < 10). The Jaw Functional Limitation Scale 8‐item (JFLS‐8) was used to assess the severity of jaw dysfunction. Pain intensity was evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Anxiety and depression were evaluated using the Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7‐item (GAD‐7) and the Patient Health Questionnaire 9‐item (PHQ‐9). All included patients were diagnosed with pain‐related TMD (PT), intra‐articular TMD (IT) or combined TMD (CT). Results: Compared with non‐EDS patients, EDS patients exhibited more severe jaw dysfunction, greater pain intensity and higher PHQ‐9 scores (p <.05). Multivariate analyses showed that EDS (B = 3.69), female gender (B = 3.69), and elevated GAD‐7 score (B = 0.73) were significantly associated with an increased score on the JFLS‐8 (p <.05). Moreover, bivariate logistic regression analysis indicated a significant relationship between EDS and PT (OR = 2.70, p =.007). Conclusion: The presence of EDS was more closely related to PT, but the causal relationship between them needs to be further confirmed. Due to the complex composition consisting of solid particles and fluids with different physical properties, geophysical flows often show complex and diverse dynamic characteristics. For landslides with high water content, there are complex interactions between the solid and fluid phases. Therefore, it is difficult to grasp the dynamic characteristics and the disaster scale of this type of landslide, especially under complex terrain and ground conditions. The drag effect is an important aspect of the interaction between the solid and liquid phases. We optimized the enhanced drag coefficient formula to further consider the effect of high-velocity movement. By considering the volume fraction relationships between different phases, a mechanical erosion rate model is utilized for multiphase flows. Based on the r.avaflow numerical tool and the multiphase mass flow model, considering the interphase interaction characteristics of high-velocity liquefied landslides, we analyzed the influence of the obstruction of buildings and their entrainment into the landslide on the dynamic characteristics and hazard range of the Shenzhen 2015 landslide. This provides a reference for the analysis of complex geophysical disasters based on the multiphase mass flow model. Importantly, we have demonstrated the reduced mobility of the considered erosive impact event, which is in line with the physical principle.

Huainan Partridge chicken is one of the indigenous chicken breeds in China. In this study, the first complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence of Huainan Partridge chicken had been obtained using PCR amplification, sequencing and assembling. The mitogenome of Huainan Partridge chicken is 16785 bp in length, including a control region (D-loop), 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer genes and 2 ribosomal genes. The base composition of the complete mtDNA sequence is 30.27% for A, 23.73% for T, 13.50%for G, 32.50% for C. This study will provide reference for the phylogenetic analysis of Huainan Partridge chicken.
