Search

We report on the discovery of a dual supermassive black hole system in the radio galaxy J1543-0757, with a projected separation between the two black holes of 46 mas. The result is based on recent multifrequency observations using the Very Long Baseline Array and European VLBI Network, which reveal two compact, variable, flat-spectrum, active nuclei within the elliptical host galaxy of J1543-0757. Multiepoch observations from the VLBA also provide constraints on the spectral index and proper motions of all components. The flat spectra of both N and S at both frequencies strongly support that these radio components are associated with two separate, accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). The two nuclei appear stationary, while the jets emanating from the weaker of the two nuclei appear to move out and terminate in bright hot spots. M60, an elliptical galaxy located 16.5~Mpc away, has an active nucleus with a very low luminosity and an extremely low accretion rate. Its central supermassive black hole has a mass of $M_{\rm BH}\sim4.5\times10^{9}\, M_{\odot}$ and a Schwarzschild radii corresponding to $R_{\rm S}\sim5.4\,\mu\mathrm{as}$. To investigate the nature of its innermost radio nucleus, data from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 4.4 and 7.6~GHz were reduced. The VLBA images reveal a compact component with total flux densities of $\sim$20~mJy at both frequencies, a size of $\leq$0.27~mas (99.7$\%$ confidence level), about 0.022~pc ($50\,R_{\rm S}$) at 7.6~GHz, and a brightness temperature of $\geq6\times10^{9}$~K. This suggests that the observed centi-parsec-scale compact core could be attributed to a nonthermal jet base or an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) with nonthermal electrons. The extremely compact structure also supports the presence of an SMBH in the center. Our results indicate that M60 is a promising target for broad-band VLBI observations at millimeter wavelengths to probe ADAF scenarios and tightly constrain the potential photon ring (about 28\,$\mu$as) around its SMBH., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

The nearby radio galaxy M87 offers a unique opportunity to explore the connections between the central supermassive black hole and relativistic jets. Previous studies of the inner region of M87 revealed a wide opening angle for the jet originating near the black hole. The Event Horizon Telescope resolved the central radio source and found an asymmetric ring structure consistent with expectations from General Relativity. With a baseline of 17 years of observations, there was a shift in the jet's transverse position, possibly arising from an eight to ten-year quasi-periodicity. However, the origin of this sideways shift remains unclear. Here we report an analysis of radio observations over 22 years that suggests a period of about 11 years in the position angle variation of the jet. We infer that we are seeing a spinning black hole that induces the Lense-Thirring precession of a misaligned accretion disk. Similar jet precession may commonly occur in other active galactic nuclei but has been challenging to detect owing to the small magnitude and long period of the variation., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables

The BL Lacertae object OJ 287 is a very unusual quasar producing a wobbling radio jet and some double-peaked optical outbursts with a possible period of about 12 yr for more than one century. This variability is widely explained by models of binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) or precessing jet/disk from a single SMBH. To enable an independent and nearly bias-free investigation on these possible scenarios, we explored the feasibility of extremely high-precision differential astrometry on its innermost restless jet at mm-wavelengths. Through re-visiting some existing radio surveys and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data at frequencies from 1.4 to 15.4 GHz and performing new Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations at 43.2 GHz, we find that the radio source J0854$+$1959, 7.1 arcmin apart from OJ 287 and no clearly-seen optical and infrared counterparts, could provide a nearly ideal reference point to track the complicated jet activity of OJ 287. The source J0854$+$1959 has a stable GHz-peaked radio spectrum and shows a jet structure consisting of two discrete, mas-scale-compact and steep-spectrum components and showing no proper motion over about 8 yr. The stable VLBI structure can be interpreted by an episodic, optically thin and one-sided jet. With respect to its 4.1-mJy peak feature at 43.2 GHz, we have achieved an astrometric precision at the state-of-art level, about 10 $\mu$as. These results indicate that future VLBI astrometry on OJ 287 could allow us to accurately locate its jet apex and activity boundary, align its restless jet structure over decades without significant systematic bias, and probe various astrophysical scenarios., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters

This study uses multi-frequency Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) to study the radio emission from 10 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and four radio-loud quasars (RLQs). The diverse morphologies, radio spectra, and brightness temperatures observed in the VLBI images of these RQQs, together with the variability in their GHz spectra and VLBI flux densities, shed light on the origins of their nuclear radio emission. The total radio emission of RQQs appears to originate from non-thermal synchrotron radiation due to a combination of active galactic nuclei and star formation activities. However, our data suggest that the VLBI-detected radio emission from these RQQs is primarily associated with compact jets or corona, with extended emissions such as star formation and large-scale jets being resolved by the high resolution of the VLBI images. Wind emission models are not in complete agreement the VLBI observations. Unlike RLQs, where the parsec-scale radio emission is dominated by a relativistically boosted core, the radio cores of RQQs are either not dominant or are mixed with significant jet emission. RQQs with compact cores or core-jet structures typically have more pronounced variability, with flat or inverted spectra, whereas jet-dominated RQQs have steep spectra and unremarkable variability. Future high-resolution observations of more RQQs could help to determine the fraction of different emission sources and their associated physical mechanisms., Comment: This paper has been accepted by MNRAS

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed in 2017 the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ($\lambda$=1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT datasets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars - which typically exhibit steep emission spectra - are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic Center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most-sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the Fast-Folding-Algorithm and single pulse search targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission; using the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction ($\lesssim$2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 6 Tables. Measuring the proper motion of the emission component in radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) could help to distinguish between the origins of the radio emission and to understand whether the jet production mechanism is the same in radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and RQQs. PG 1351+640 is one of the few RQQs suitable for proper motion studies: it has two compact components on milli-arcsecond scales, a flat-spectrum core and a steep-spectrum jet; both components are >2 mJy at 5 GHz and are well suited for Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations. We compare recent VLBA observations with that made seventeen years ago and find no significant change in the core-jet separation between 2005 and 2015 (a proper motion of 0.003 mas yr-1). However, the core-jet separation increased significantly between 2015 and 2022, inferring a jet proper motion velocity of 0.063 mas yr-1, which corresponds to an apparent transverse velocity of 0.37c. Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I, Q, U , and V respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

In this work, we studied the Galactic Center supermassive black hole (SMBH), Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), with the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA)/East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) monitoring observations. Especially on 13 May 2019, Sgr A* experienced an unprecedented bright near infra-red (NIR) flare; so, we find a possible counterpart at 43 GHz (7 mm). As a result, a large temporal variation of the flux density at the level 15.4%, with the highest flux density of 2.04 Jy, is found on 11 May 2019. Interestingly, the intrinsic sizes are also variable, and the area and major-axis size show a marginal correlation with flux density with >2{\sigma}. Thus, we interpret that the emission region at 43 GHz follows the larger-when-brighter relation in 2019. Observational studies of GHz peaked spectrum (GPS) sources contribute to the understanding of the radiative properties and interstellar environment of host galaxies. We present the results from the multi-frequency high-resolution VLBI observations of a sample of nine GPS sources at 8, 15, and 43 GHz. All sources show a core-jet structure. Four sources show relativistic jets with Doppler boosting factors ranging from 2.0 to 5.0 and a jet viewing angle between 10{\deg} and 30{\deg}. The core brightness temperatures of the other five sources are below the equipartition brightness temperature limit with their jet viewing angles in the range of 13.6{\deg} degrees to 71.9{\deg}, which are systematically larger than those of relativistic jets in this sample. The sources show diverse variability properties, with variability levels ranging from 0.11 to 0.56. The measured turnover frequency in the radio spectrum ranges from 6.2 and 31.8 GHz. We estimate the equipartition magnetic field strength to be between 9 and 48 mG. Because of its proximity and the large size of its black hole, M87 is one of the best targets for studying the launching mechanism of active galactic nucleus jets. Currently, magnetic fields are considered to be an essential factor in the launching and accelerating of the jet. However, current observational estimates of the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet are limited to the innermost part of the jet or to HST-1. No attempt has yet been made to measure the magnetic field strength in between. We aim to infer the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet out to a distance of several thousand $r_s$ by tracking the distance-dependent changes in the synchrotron spectrum of the jet from high-resolution very long baseline interferometry observations. In order to obtain high-quality spectral index maps, quasi-simultaneous observations at 22 and 43 GHz were conducted using the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) and the VLBA. We compared the spectral index distributions obtained from the observations with a model and placed limits on the magnetic field strengths as a function of distance. The overall spectral morphology is broadly consistent over the course of these observations. The observed synchrotron spectrum rapidly steepens from $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -0.7 at ~ 2 mas to $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -2.5 at ~ 6 mas. A spectral index model in which nonthermal electron injections inside the jet decrease with distance can adequately reproduce the observed trend. This suggests the magnetic field strength of the jet at a distance of 2 - 10 mas (~ 900 $r_s$ - ~ 4500 $r_s$ in the deprojected distance) has a range of $B=(0.3 - 1.0 G)(z/2 mas)^{-0.73}$. Extrapolating to the EHT scale yields consistent results, suggesting that the majority of the magnetic flux of the jet near the black hole is preserved out to ~ 4500 $r_s$ without significant dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 hours in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. We observed 20 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars at low redshift ($z<0.5$) with total flux density > 1 mJy, including 4 radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and 16 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs), using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 GHz. Ten RQQs are clearly detected in the VLBA images, and a compact radio core is identified in eight of them, indicating the prevalence of active galactic nucleus (AGN)-related radio emission in this flux-density-limited RQQ sample. The RQQs and RLQs in our sample have a division at $\sim$30~mJy. The radio emission from RQQs appears to be the result of a combination of star formation and AGN-associated activities. All RQQs in our sample have a 5 GHz flux density ratio of Very Large Array (VLA) A-array to D-array $f_{\rm c} = S_{\rm A}^{\rm VLA}/S_{\rm D}^{\rm VLA}$ above 0.2. The RQQs with $f_a$ (VLBA and VLA flux density ratio $S^{\rm VLBA}/S_{\rm A}^{\rm VLA}) > 0.2$ versus $f_a < 0.2$ show significant differences in morphology, compactness and total flux density. $f_{\rm a}$ of RQQs is systematically lower than that of RLQs, probably due to the extended jets or relic jets of RQQs on 10s to 100s parsecs which are resolved out in VLBA images. Future larger samples, especially with the addition of milli-arcsec resolution radio images of RQQs with total flux densities below 1 mJy, can test the conclusions of this paper and contributes to the understanding of the radio emission mechanism of RQQs, and the dichotomy and physical connection between RQQs and RLQs., Comment: This paper has been accepted by MNRAS

Fermi J1544-0649 is a transient GeV source first detected during its GeV flares in 2017. Multi-wavelength observations during the flaring time demonstrate variability and spectral energy distribution(SED) that are typical of a blazar. Other than the flare time, Fermi J1544-0649 is quiet in the GeV band and looks rather like a quiet galaxy (2MASX J15441967-0649156) for a decade. Together with the broad absorption lines feature we further explore the "misaligned blazar scenario". We analyzed the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) data from 2018 to 2020 and discovered the four jet components from Fermi J1544-0649. We found a viewing angle around 3.7{\deg} to 7.4{\deg}. The lower limit of the viewing angle indicates a blazar with an extremely low duty cycle of the gamma-ray emission, the upper limit of it supports the "misaligned blazar scenario". Follow-up multi-wavelength observations after 2018 show Fermi J1544-0649 remains quiet in GeV, X-ray, and optical bands. Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the Galactic Center supermassive black hole (SMBH), is one of the best targets to resolve the innermost region of SMBH with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). In this study, we have carried out observations toward Sgr A* at 1.349 cm (22.223 GHz) and 6.950 mm (43.135 GHz) with the East Asian VLBI Network, as a part of the multi-wavelength campaign of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) in 2017 April. To mitigate scattering effects, the physically motivated scattering kernel model from Psaltis et al. (2018) and the scattering parameters from Johnson et al. (2018) have been applied. As a result, a single, symmetric Gaussian model well describes the intrinsic structure of Sgr A* at both wavelengths. From closure amplitudes, the major-axis sizes are ~704$\pm$102 $\mu$as (axial ratio $\sim$1.19$^{+0.24}_{-0.19}$) and $\sim$300$\pm$25 $\mu$as (axial ratio $\sim$1.28$\pm$0.2) at 1.349 cm and 6.95 mm respectively. Together with a quasi-simultaneous observation at 3.5 mm (86 GHz) by Issaoun et al. (2019), we show that the intrinsic size scales with observing wavelength as a power-law, with an index $\sim$1.2$\pm$0.2. Our results also provide estimates of the size and compact flux density at 1.3 mm, which can be incorporated into the analysis of the EHT observations. In terms of the origin of radio emission, we have compared the intrinsic structures with the accretion flow scenario, especially the radiatively inefficient accretion flow based on the Keplerian shell model. We report the high-resolution radio observations of eight Fanaroff-Riley type 0 radio galaxies (FR 0s), selected from the published FR 0 sample. These observations were carried out with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and European VLBI Network (EVN) at frequencies of 5 and 8 GHz with a highest resolution of 0.6 mas. All eight sources show compact structures on projected physical sizes of 0.3-10 parsec. Six sources show a two-sided structure and two sources show a one-sided jet structure. J1025+1022 shows an X-shaped jet structure, which could result from a reorientation of the jet axis due to a restart of the central engine or a projection of a highly curved inner jet, but more studies are needed to examine these scenarios. Proper motions for 22 jet components of the eight sources are determined to be between -0.08 c and 0.51 c. Although most of the sources exhibit flat spectra, other observed characteristics, such as, low-amplitude flux density variations, low jet proper motion speeds, and symmetric two-sided jet structures, tend to support that the pc-scale FR 0 jets are mildly relativistic with lower bulk Lorentz factors and larger viewing angles., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the kinematics of the M87 jet using the first year data of the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) large program, which has densely monitored the jet at 22 and 43 GHz since 2016. We find that the apparent jet speeds generally increase from $\approx0.3c$ at $\approx0.5$ mas from the jet base to $\approx2.7c$ at $\approx20$ mas, indicating that the jet is accelerated from subluminal to superluminal speeds on these scales. We perform a complementary jet kinematic analysis by using archival Very Long Baseline Array monitoring data observed in $2005-2009$ at 1.7 GHz and find that the jet is moving at relativistic speeds up to $\approx5.8c$ at distances of $200-410$ mas. We combine the two kinematic results and find that the jet is gradually accelerated over a broad distance range that coincides with the jet collimation zone, implying that conversion of Poynting flux to kinetic energy flux takes place. If the jet emission consists of a single streamline, the observed trend of jet acceleration ($\Gamma\propto z^{0.16\pm0.01}$) is relatively slow compared to models of a highly magnetized jet. This indicates that Poynting flux conversion through the differential collimation of poloidal magnetic fields may be less efficient than expected. However, we find a non-negligible dispersion in the observed speeds for a given jet distance, making it difficult to describe the jet velocity field with a single power-law acceleration function. M87 is one of the best available source for studying the AGN jet-launching region. To enrich our knowledge of this region, with quasi-simultaneous observations using VLBA at 22, 43 and 86 GHz, we capture the images of the radio jet in M87 on a scale within several thousand R s . Based on the images, we analyze the transverse jet structure and obtain the most accurate spectral-index maps of the jet in M87 so far, then for the first time, we compare the results of the two analyses and find a spatial association between the jet collimations and the local enhancement of the density of external medium in the jet-launching region. We also find the external medium is not uniform, and greatly contributes to the free-free absorption in this region. In addition, we find for the jet in M87, its temporal morphology in the launching region may be largely affected by the local, short-lived kink instability growing in itself., Comment: Accepted by Galaxies

The KVN(Korean VLBI Network)-style simultaneous multi-frequency receiving mode is demonstrated to be promising for mm-VLBI observations. Recently, other Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) facilities all over the globe start to implement compatible optics systems. Simultaneous dual/multi-frequency VLBI observations at mm wavelengths with international baselines are thus possible. In this paper, we present the results from the first successful simultaneous 22/43 GHz dual-frequency observation with KaVA(KVN and VERA array), including images and astrometric results. Our analysis shows that the newly implemented simultaneous receiving system has brought a significant extension of the coherence time of the 43 GHz visibility phases along the international baselines. The astrometric results obtained with KaVA are consistent with those obtained with the independent analysis of the KVN data. Our results thus confirm the good performance of the simultaneous receiving systems for the non-KVN stations. The $\gamma$-ray bright blazar CTA 102 is studied using imaging (new 15 GHz and archival 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array, VLBA data) and time variable optical flux density, polarization degree and electric vector position angle (EVPA) spanning between 2015 June 1 and 2016 October 1, covering a prominent $\gamma$-ray flare during 2016 January. The pc-scale jet indicates expansion with oscillatory features upto 17 mas. Component proper motions are in the range 0.04 - 0.33 mas/yr with acceleration upto 1.2 mas followed by a slowing down beyond 1.5 mas. A jet bulk Lorentz factor $\geq$ 17.5, position angle of 128.3 degrees, inclination angle $\leq$ 6.6 degrees and intrinsic half opening angle $\leq$ 1.8 degrees are derived from the VLBA data. These inferences are employed in a helical jet model to infer long term variability in flux density, polarization degree, EVPA and a rotation of the Stokes Q and U parameters. A core distance of $r_{\rm core,43 \ GHz}$ = 22.9 pc, and a magnetic field strength at 1 pc and the core location of 1.57 G and 0.07 G respectively are inferred using the core shift method.
