The Solar Activity Magnetic Monitor (SAMM) Network (SAMNet) is a future UK-led international network of ground-based solar telescope stations. SAMNet, at its full capacity, will continuously monitor the Sun’s intensity, magnetic, and Doppler velocity fields at multiple heights in the solar atmosphere (from photosphere to upper chromosphere). Each SAMM sentinel will be equipped with a cluster of identical telescopes each with a different magneto-optical filter (MOFs) to take observations in K I, Na D, and Ca I spectral bands. A subset of SAMM stations will have white-light coronagraphs and emission line coronal spectropolarimeters. The objectives of SAMNet are to provide observational data for space weather research and forecast. The goal is to achieve an operationally sufficient lead time of e.g., flare warning of 2–8 h and provide many sought-after continuous synoptic maps (e.g., LoS magnetic and velocity fields, intensity) of the lower solar atmosphere with a spatial resolution limited only by seeing or diffraction limit, and with a cadence of 10 min. The individual SAMM sentinels will be connected to their master HQ hub where data received from all the slave stations will be automatically processed and flare warning issued up to 26 h in advance.

We report an all-solid-state narrowband lidar system for the simultaneous detection of Ca and Ca+ layers over Yanqing (40.41°N, 116.01°E). The uniqueness of this lidar lies in its transmitter, which is based on optical parametric oscillation (OPO) and optical parametric amplification (OPA) techniques. The injection seeded OPO and the OPA are pumped by the second harmonic of an injection-seeded Nd:YAG laser, which can generate coherent light at the wavelength of 786 nm or 846 nm lasers, whose second harmonics in turn generate the 393 nm or 423 nm pulses, respectively, for the detection of thermospheric and ionospheric Ca+ and Ca layers. Compared to the conventional dye-based system, this lidar transmitter is a narrowband system (bandwidth < 200 MHz), which has produced a factor of two more output power with higher stability and reliability. The lidar system in Yingqing demonstrated Ca+ detection sensitivity of 0.1 atoms-cm−3 for long-term observation and reached a height of ~300 km. In this paper the observation of sodium (Na) layer in mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region over complete diurnal cycles based on broadband Na lidar at Yanqing Station, Beijing, China (40.5°N,116°E ) was reported. Faraday filters with dual-channel design were used in the lidar receiving unit to suppress the strong background light in the daytime, which allow observation of Na layer with an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) under sunlit condition. Several special structures of Na layer observed in the daytime was discussed. The simultaneous continuous observation of zonal wind by meteor radar was presented for comparison. These observation results can provide direct and reliable supports for the study of mesopause dynamics and solar effect on Na layer.

The sodium atom existed in the metal layer of the earth’s atmosphere has a high atomic number density and a large scattering cross section. Sodium layer can act as a good tracer for atmospheric detection in the middle and lower-thermosphere (MLT) region. The sodium fluorescence lidar uses ultrashort pulsed laser to excite sodium atoms, which enabling simultaneous detection of wind and temperature in the middle and upper atmosphere. This paper reports on the development of sodium fluorescence laser radar in recent years, especially the integration of fiber-coupled optical switches and fiber-coupled acousto-optic frequency modulation technologies, which greatly improved the stability and reliability of lidar system and reduced the maintenance of lidar operation, laying a good foundation for the application of lidar observations under harsh environments. This technology has been applied to the sodium wind/temperature lidar in Yangbajing, Tibet and has been running stably for a long time.

Based on the full-diurnal-cycle sodium (Na) lidar observations at Beijing (40.41 °N, 116.01 °E), we firstly report pronounced downward extensions of the Na layer bottomside to below 75 km near mid-December, 2014. Considerable Na atoms were observed even as low as ~72 km, where Na atoms is short-lived. To our knowledge, this represents the lowest altitude where considerable Na atoms have ever been detected by Na lidar. More interestingly, an unprecedented Na density of ~2500 atoms/cm3 around 75 km was observed on December 17, 2014. Such high Na atoms concentration was two orders of magnitude larger than that normally observed at the similar altitude region. The variations of Na density on the layer bottom were found to be accompanied by warming temperature anomalies and considerable perturbations of minor chemical species (H, O, O3) in the upper mesosphere. Different from the previous reported metal layer bottom enhancements mainly contributed by photolysis after sunrise, these observational results suggest more critical contributions were made by the Na neutral chemical reactions to the Na layer bottom extensions reported here. The time-longitudinal variations of background atmospheric parameters in the upper mesosphere and stratosphere from global satellite observations and ERA reanalysis data indicated that the anomalous structures observed near the lidar site in mid-December, 2014 were associated with planetary wave (PW) activities. The anomalies of temperature and O3 perturbation showed opposite phase in the altitude range of 70~75 km and 35~45 km. This implied that the vertical coupling between the mesosphere and stratosphere, possibly driven by the interactions of PW activities with background atmosphere, contributed to the perturbations of background atmosphere. Furthermore, the bottom enhancement on December 17, 2014 was also accompanied by clear wavy signatures in the main layer. The wavy structures had downward phase propagations and agreed well with the variation of zero zonal wind measured by a nearby meteor radar, suggesting the downward transportation of Na species from above 80 km to below further promotes the formation of the unprecedented Na layer bottom enhancement on December 17, 2014. These results provide a clear observational evidence for the Na layer bottom response to the planetary-scale atmospheric perturbations which modulated Na chemical reactions. In this paper a pure rotational Raman lidar (PRR) was established for the atmospheric temperature measurements from 5 km to 40 km over Wuhan, China (30.5°N, 114.5°E). To extract the expected PRR signals and simultaneously suppress the elastically backscattered light, a high-spectral resolution polychromator for light splitting and filtering was designed. Observational results revealed that the temperature difference measured by PRR lidar and the local radiosonde below 30 km was less than 3.0 K. The good agreement validated the reliability of the PRR lidar. With the 1-h integration and 150-m spatial resolution, the statistical temperature error for PRR lidar increases from 0.4 K at 10 km up to 4 K at altitudes of about 30 km. In addition, the whole night temperature profiles were obtained for study of the long-term observation of atmospheric fluctuations.

In this paper, a lidar system in Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM, 30.5°N,114.5°E) for atmospheric density, temperature and wind observation was reported. The design and techniques of this lidar were described in detail. The atmospheric temperature of the troposphere, stratosphere and lower mesosphere were measured by the Raman, Rayleigh and sodium channel of this lidar system, respectively.
