15. The effects of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F on renal outcomes in type 2 diabetic kidney disease patients with severe proteinuria: a single-center cohort study.

Abstract

Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (TwHF) has been shown to substantially reduce proteinuria in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD); however, the effect of TwHF on renal outcomes in DKD remains unknown. Accordingly, we aimed to establish the effects of TwHF on renal outcomes in patients with DKD. Overall, 124 patients with DKD, induced by type 2 diabetes mellitus, with 24-h proteinuria > 2 g, and an estimated glomerular filtration rate > 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 were retrospectively investigated. The renal outcomes were defined as doubling serum creatinine levels or end-stage kidney disease. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses were performed to analyze prognostic factors for renal outcomes. By the end of the follow-up, renal outcomes were observed in 23 and 11 patients in the non-TwHF and TwHF groups, respectively (p = 0.006). TwHF significantly reduced the risk of renal outcomes (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 0.271, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.111–0.660, p = 0.004) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) G3 (adjusted HR 0.274, 95%CI 0.081–0.932, p = 0.039). Based on the Kaplan-Meier analysis, 1- and 3-year proportions of patients without renal outcomes were significantly lower in the non-TwHF group than those in the TwHF group (92.8% vs. 95.5% and 47.2% vs. 76.8%, respectively; p = 0.0018). In DKD patients with severe proteinuria, TwHF could prevent DKD progression, especially in patients with CKD G3. 17. Ecological Risk Assessment of Land Use Change in the Tarim River Basin, Xinjiang, China.

Abstract

In recent years, global climate change and human alterations to land use have led to a decrease in ecosystem services, making ecosystems more vulnerable. However, unlike the well-established risk assessment frameworks used in natural disaster research, the concept of ecological risks arising from changes in land use is still in its early stages, with its nuances and assessment methodologies yet to be clearly defined. This study proposes a new framework for assessing ecological risks resulting from changes in land use in the Tarim River Basin. The framework employs a coupled PLUS and Invest model to evaluate the ecological risks of land use change under three development scenarios projected for the Tarim River Basin in Xinjiang by 2035. The findings indicate that: (1) Between 2000 and 2020, the predominant land use types in the Tarim River Basin in Xinjiang were primarily unused land, followed by grassland and cropland. Conversely, grassland, water, and construction land were relatively less prevalent. During this period, the area of unused land and cultivated land increased, while grassland, forest land, and water exhibited a declining trend. Moving forward, under the three scenarios from 2020 to 2035, land use changes in the study area are characterized by the expansion of cropland and unused land, coupled with a significant decrease in grassland area, while other land categories demonstrate minor fluctuations. (2) From 2020 to 2035, across various scenarios, the total ecosystem service within the study area demonstrates an overall increasing trend in both the northern and southern marginal zones. Specifically, under the baseline scenario, the total amount of ecosystem services in the study area decreased by 15.247% compared to 2020. Similarly, under the economic development scenario, this decrease amounted to 13.358% compared to 2020. Conversely, under the ecological protection scenario, the decrease reached 19.852% compared to 2020. (3) The structure of ecological risk levels from 2020 to 2035, across multiple scenarios, demonstrates a consistent pattern, characterized by a predominant proportion of moderate risk. 22. Integrative catalytic pairs for efficient multi-intermediate catalysis

Abstract

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable research interest owing to their combined merits of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. However, the uniform and isolated active sites of SACs fall short in catalysing complex chemical processes that simultaneously involve multiple intermediates. In this Review, we highlight an emerging class of catalysts with adjacent binary active centres, which is called integrative catalytic pairs (ICPs), showing not only atomic-scale site-to-site electronic interactions but also synergistic catalytic effects. Compared with SACs or their derivative dual-atom catalysts (DACs), multi-interactive intermediates on ICPs can overcome kinetic barriers, adjust reaction pathways and break the universal linear scaling relations as the smallest active units. Starting from this active-site design principle, each single active atom can be considered as a brick to further build integrative catalytic clusters (ICCs) with desirable configurations, towards trimer or even larger multi-atom units depending on the requirement of a given reaction.

Abstract

Tandem catalysis presents a promising strategy to improve the selectivity toward multicarbon products in the electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). For CO2RR, CO is a critical intermediate for producing multicarbon products. However, the management of CO localization and CO diffusion remains underexplored despite its critical role. Herein, a 3D tandem catalyst electrode with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) is designed to generate CO as an intermediate product within a copper (Cu) nanoneedle array. Via this nanostructured design, CO2 forms C2+ products with a high Faradaic efficiency (FEC2+) of 64% in an H‐cell and 70% in a flow cell with a current density of 350 mA cm−2. These figures‐of‐merit are currently among the top literature reports. More importantly, in situ Raman spectroscopy and finite‐element method calculations are employed to elucidate the origins of enhanced selectivity. These approaches reveal the crucial role of prolonging the CO diffusion path length for improving CO utilization during CO2 conversion with tandem catalyst systems. The favorable CO2RR FEC2+ in two distinct environments (H‐cell and flow cell) further corroborates that this effect is not limited to a particular reactor environment. Abstract

Introduction A good prediction model plays an important role in determining the progression to diabetic kidney disease. We aimed to create a model to predict progression to kidney failure in patients with diabetic kidney disease. Methods We retrospectively assessed 641 patients with type 2 diabetic kidney disease as derivation cohort and 280 patients as external out time validation cohort. We used a combination of clinical guidance and univariate logistic regression to select the relevant variables. We calculated the discrimination and calibration of different models. The best model was selected according to the optimal combination of discrimination and calibration. Results During the 3 years follow up, there were 272 outcomes (42%) in derivation cohort and 138 outcomes (49%) in external validation cohort. The final variables selected in the multivariate logistics regression were age, gender, hemoglobin, NLR, serum cystatin C, eGFR, 24-h urine protein, and the use of oral hypoglycemic drugs. We developed four different models as clinical, laboratory, lab-medication, and full models according to these independent risk factors. Laboratory model performed well in both discrimination and calibration among all the models (C-statistics: external validation 0.863; p value of the Hosmer–Lemeshow, .817). There was no significant difference in NRI among laboratory model, lab-medication model, and full model (p > .05). So, we chose the laboratory model as the optimal model. Conclusion We constructed a nomogram which contained hemoglobin, NLR, serum cystatin C, eGFR, and 24-h urine protein to predict the risk of patients with diabetic kidney disease initiating renal replacement in 3 years.

Abstract

Electrostatic charges caused by contact electrification are ubiquitous in nature, and their accumulation on surfaces could cause many undesirable consequences. Despite notable progress, existing antistatic approaches are heavily dependent on either the modification of the bulk materials or the delicate control of surface patterning. Taking advantage of the fact that contact electrification originates from electron transfer dictated by surface potential difference, herein, we report the rational design of chemically heterogeneous but electrostatically homogeneous coatings through the molecular engineering of the surface potential to suppress electron transfer so as to completely prevent electrostatic charge generation during contact electrification. Our strategy is general, endowing the simple fabrication of robust antistatic coatings on arbitrary surfaces.

Abstract

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a blinding disease caused by multiple factors and is the primary cause of vision loss in the elderly. The morbidity of AMD increases every year. Currently, there is no effective treatment option for AMD. Intravitreal injection of antivascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) is currently the most widely used therapy, but it only aims at neovascularization, which is an intermediate pathological phenomenon of wet AMD, not at the etiological treatment. Anti-VEGF therapy can only temporarily delay the degeneration process of wet AMD, and AMD is easy to relapse after drug withdrawal. Therefore, it is urgent to deepen our understanding of the pathophysiological processes underlying AMD and to identify integrated or new strategies for AMD prevention and treatment. Recent studies have found that autophagy dysfunction in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, cellular senescence, and abnormal immune-inflammatory responses play key roles in the pathogenesis of AMD. For many age-related diseases, the main focus is currently the clearing of senescent cells (SNCs) as an antiaging treatment, thereby delaying diseases. However, in AMD, there is no relevant antiaging application. This review will discuss the pathogenesis of AMD and how interactions among RPE autophagy dysfunction, cellular senescence, and abnormal immune-inflammatory responses are involved in AMD, and it will summarize the three antiaging strategies that have been developed, with the aim of providing important information for the integrated prevention and treatment of AMD and laying the ground work for the application of antiaging strategies in AMD treatment.

Abstract

Hyperhydricity is a physiological disorder associated with oxidative stress. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in plants is initiated by various enzymatic sources, including plasma membrane-localized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidases, cell wall-bound peroxidase (POD), and apoplastic polyamine oxidase (PAO). The origin of the oxidative burst associated with hyperhydricity remains unknown. To investigate the role of NADPH oxidases, POD, and PAO in ROS production and hyperhydricity, exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and inhibitors of each ROS-producing enzyme were applied to explore the mechanism of oxidative stress induction in garlic plantlets in vitro. A concentration of 1.5 mM H2O2 increased endogenous ROS production and hyperhydricity occurrence and enhanced the activities of NADPH oxidases, POD, and PAO. During the entire treatment period, NADPH oxidase activity increased continuously, whereas POD and PAO activities exhibited a transient increase and subsequently declined. Histochemical and cytochemical visualization demonstrated that specific inhibitors of each enzyme effectively suppressed ROS accumulation. Moreover, superoxide anion generation, H2O2 content, and hyperhydric shoot frequency in H2O2-stressed plantlets decreased significantly. The NADPH oxidase inhibitor was the most effective at suppressing superoxide anion production. The results suggested that NADPH oxidases, POD, and PAO were responsible for endogenous ROS induction. NADPH oxidase activation might play a pivotal role in the oxidative burst in garlic plantlets in vitro during hyperhydricity.
