1. Tackling Data Scarcity with Transfer Learning: A Case Study of Thickness Characterization from Optical Spectra of Perovskite Thin Films

Abstract

Transfer learning increasingly becomes an important tool in handling data scarcity often encountered in machine learning. In the application of high-throughput thickness as a downstream process of the high-throughput optimization of optoelectronic thin films with autonomous workflows, data scarcity occurs especially for new materials. To achieve high-throughput thickness characterization, we propose a machine learning model called thicknessML that predicts thickness from UV-Vis spectrophotometry input and an overarching transfer learning workflow. We demonstrate the transfer learning workflow from generic source domain of generic band-gapped materials to specific target domain of perovskite materials, where the target domain data only come from limited number (18) of refractive indices from literature. The target domain can be easily extended to other material classes with a few literature data. Defining thickness prediction accuracy to be within-10% deviation, thicknessML achieves 92.2% (with a deviation of 3.6%) accuracy with transfer learning compared to 81.8% (with a deviation of 3.6%) 11.7% without (lower mean and larger standard deviation). Experimental validation on six deposited perovskite films also corroborates the efficacy of the proposed workflow by yielding a 10.5% mean absolute percentage error (MAPE).

Abstract

This study addresses the urgent need for an efficient and accurate smoke detection system to enhance safety measures in fire monitoring, industrial safety, and urban surveillance. Given the complexity of detecting smoke in diverse environments and under real-time constraints, our research aims to solve challenges related to low-resolution imagery, limited computational resources, and environmental variability. This study introduces a novel smoke detection system that utilizes the real-time detection Transformer (RT-DETR) architecture to enhance the speed and precision of video analysis. Our system integrates advanced modules, including triplet attention, ADown, and a high-level screening-feature fusion pyramid network (HS-FPN), to address challenges related to low-resolution imagery, real-time processing constraints, and environmental variability. The triplet attention mechanism is essential for detecting subtle smoke features, often overlooked due to their nuanced nature. The ADown module significantly reduces computational complexity, enabling real-time operation on devices with limited resources. Furthermore, the HS-FPN enhances the system's robustness by amalgamating multi-scale features for reliable detection across various smoke types and sizes. Evaluation using a diverse dataset showcased notable improvements in average precision (AP50) and frames per second (FPS) metrics compared to existing state-of-the-art networks. Ablation studies validated the contributions of each component in achieving an optimal balance between accuracy and operational efficiency. The RT-DETR-based smoke detection system not only meets real-time requirements for applications like fire monitoring, industrial safety, and urban surveillance but also establishes a new performance benchmark in this field. Abstract

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) represent one of the most promising emerging photovoltaic technologies due to their high power conversion efficiency. However, despite the huge progress made not only in terms of the efficiency achieved, but also fundamental understanding of the relevant physics of the devices and issues which affect their efficiency and stability, there are still unresolved problems and obstacles on the path toward commercialization of this promising technology. In this roadmap, we aim to provide a concise and up to date summary of outstanding issues and challenges, and the progress made toward addressing these issues. While the format of this article is not meant to be a comprehensive review of the topic, it provides a collection of the viewpoints of the experts in the field, which covers a broad range of topics related to PSC commercialization, including those relevant for manufacturing (scaling up, different types of devices), operation and stability (various factors), and environmental issues (in particular the use of lead). We hope that the article will provide a useful resource for researchers in the field and that it will facilitate discussions and move forward toward addressing the outstanding challenges in this fast-developing field.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a simple and elegant method to extract the thickness and the optical constants of various films from the reflectance and transmittance spectra in the wavelength range of 350 − 1000 nm. The underlying inverse problem is posed here as an optimization problem. To find unique solutions to this problem, we adopt an evolutionary optimization approach that drives a population of candidate solutions towards the global optimum. An ensemble of Tauc-Lorentz Oscillators (TLOs) and an ensemble of Gaussian Oscillators (GOs), are leveraged to compute the reflectance and transmittance spectra for different candidate thickness values and refractive index profiles. This model-based optimization is solved using two efficient evolutionary algorithms (EAs), namely genetic algorithm (GA) and covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMAES), such that the resulting spectra simultaneously fit all the given data points in the admissible wavelength range. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in estimating the optical parameters of interest.

Abstract

Controlling the crystallization to achieve high‐quality homogeneous perovskite film is the key strategy in developing perovskite electronic devices. Here, an in situ dynamic optical probing technique is demonstrated that can monitor the fast crystallization of perovskites and effectively minimize the influence of laser excitation during the measurement. This study finds that the typical static probing technique would damage and induce phase segregation in the perovskite films during the excitation. These issues can be effectively resolved with the dynamic probing approach. It also found that the crystallization between MAPbI3 and MAPbI2Br is strikingly different. In particular, MAPbI2Br suffers from inefficient nucleation during the spin‐coating that strongly affects the uniform crystal growth in the annealing process. The commonly used pre‐heating process is found at a lower temperature not only can further promote the nucleation but also to complete the crystallization of MAPbI2Br. The role of further annealing at a higher temperature is to facilitate ion‐dissociation on the crystal surface to form a passivation layer to stabilize the MAPbI2Br lattices. The device performance is strongly correlated with the film formation mechanism derived from the in situ results. This work demonstrates that the in situ technique can provide deep insight into the crystallization mechanism, and help to understand the growth mechanism of perovskites with different compositions and dimensionalities. 42. Highly Efficient and Air‐Stable Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells Enabled by Polylactic Acid Modification.

Abstract

Inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) suffer from serious carrier recombination and open‐circuit voltage loss because of surface defects and unfavorable energy level alignment. Herein, a polylactic acid (PLA) modification approach to improve the performance of mixed‐halide inorganic perovskites is reported. First, the surface defects are effectively passivated through strong interaction between C═O in PLA and undercoordinated Pb2+. Second, secondary grain growth is induced by PLA modification, resulting in larger grain sizes. Third, PLA modification makes the surface region of perovskite change from n‐ to p‐type, favoring charge transport from perovskite to the hole transport layer (HTL). The PLA modified films enable PSCs with less nonradiative recombination and lower energy loss. Consequently, record PCEs of 19.12% and 18.05% are achieved for CsPbI2.25Br0.75 and CsPbI2Br PSCs, respectively. The PSC with an active area of 1 cm2 shows a PCE of 16.41%. A PCE of 14.70% is achieved for HTL‐free PSC with carbon electrode. In addition, the PSC with PLA modification shows significantly improved air stability due to the hydrophobic PLA coating. This work suggests that PLA surface modification is an effective approach to achieving efficient, stable, scalable, and low‐cost inorganic PSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Organic solar cells have attracted academic and industrial interests due to the advantages like lightweight, flexibility and roll-to-roll fabrication. Nowadays, 18% power conversion efficiency has been achieved in the state-of-the-art organic solar cells. The recent rapid progress in organic solar cells relies on the continuously emerging new materials and device fabrication technologies, and the deep understanding on film morphology, molecular packing and device physics. Donor and acceptor materials are the key materials for organic solar cells since they determine the device performance. The past 25 years have witnessed an odyssey in developing high-performance donors and acceptors. In this review, we focus on those star materials and milestone work, and introduce the molecular structure evolution of key materials. These key materials include homopolymer donors, D-A copolymer donors, A-D-A small molecular donors, fullerene acceptors and nonfullerene acceptors. At last, we outlook the challenges and very important directions in key materials development.
