Using waste clay brick powder (RBP) to partially replace cement in the preparation of concrete, is one way to recycle construction waste. In order to investigate the physical and mechanical properties and volume stability of recycled micropowder ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), the basic mechanical and shrinkage properties of recycled micropowder UHPC were studied at replacement rates of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%. The results show that: (1) When the activated recycled brick powder is used to replace the cement, the compressive strength, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength of the UHPC initially increase and then decrease with the increase in the substitution rate. When the substitution rate is 10%, the 28 d compressive strength, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength of the UHPC are the highest; (2) Replacing cement with recycled brick powder can reduce the autogenous shrinkage of the UHPC, and the autogenous shrinkage rate of the UHPC decreases with the increase in the brick powder replacement rate. The drying shrinkage of the UHPC can be reduced by replacing cement with recycled brick powder. The drying shrinkage of the UHPC initially decreases, and then increases, with the increase in the replacement rate of brick powder. When the replacement rate of the brick powder was 30%, the drying shrinkage of the UHPC was the least, and this was 49.7% lower than that in the benchmark group. The prediction models of autogenous shrinkage and drying shrinkage are in good agreement with the experimental results, which can be used to predict the shrinkage development of recycled brick powder UHPC.

In this paper, a semi-discrete model based on peridynamics (PD) for engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) is applied to simulate the fracture behavior of functionally graded ECC (FGECC) beams. This is a new application of PD in ECC. Prior to simulating the crack behavior, the convergence of the PD model for ECC is discussed and the appropriate horizon size $$\delta $$ and nonlocal ratio m are obtained, i.e., $$\delta = 1.6\,\hbox {mm}$$ and $$m = 4$$ . In addition, when the bond strain exceeds the elastic limit, a damage variable is introduced into the model, and the model is validated using a simple numerical algorithm. Finally, the dynamic fracture behavior of a two-dimensional FGECC beam under four-point bending is investigated, and the effect of the initial crack location on the fracture behavior is analyzed. Simulation results show that the initial crack location can affect the crack propagation pattern, thereby enabling one to understand the dynamic fracture behavior of ECC structures and guide the engineering practice.

In order to investigate the breakage behavior of the feed in industrial secondary ball mills, the breakage characteristics of fine magnetite were analyzed. Magnetite particle breakage produces a bimodal particle size distribution that is consistent with the typical breakage characteristics of abrasion. The secondary ball mill can increase the surface area by reducing the diameter of steel balls to enhance the abrasion. Industrial application results show that after the abrasion of the secondary ball mill for grinding magnetite was enhanced, the circulating load of the grinding-classification system dropped by 29.90% and the specific energy of the secondary ball mill decreased by 39.14%. At the same time, the consumption of steel balls also dropped from 0.17 kg/t to 0.13 kg/t, a decrease of up to 20%. It should be noted that the reduction in the ball diameter should follow certain rules because if the energy of a single collision is lower than the critical breaking energy of the particles, the grinding process will be affected and thus have counterproductive effects.

The mechanical properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) are time-dependent due to the cement hydration process. The mechanical behavior of ECC is not only related to the matrix material properties, but also to the fiber/matrix interface properties. In this study, the modeling of fiber and fiber/matrix interactions is accomplished by using a semi-discrete model in the framework of peridynamics (PD), and the time-varying laws of cement matrix and fiber/matrix interface bonding properties with curing age are also considered. The strain-softening behavior of the cement matrix is represented by introducing a correction factor to modify the pairwise force function in PD theory. The fracture damage of ECC plate from 3 to 28 days was numerically simulated by using the improved PD model to visualize the process of damage fracture under dynamic loading. The shorter the hydration time, the lower the corresponding elastic modulus, and the smaller the number of cracks generated. The dynamic fracture process of early-age ECC is analyzed to understand the crack development pattern, which provides reference for guiding structural design and engineering practice.

A new approach to batch grinding kinetics was established based on the conventional population balance model, with magnetite as the experimental object. The distribution function commonly used in the population balance model is a sum of two power functions, i.e., Bi1=φ(xi−1x1+1−φ(xi−1x1)β. Based on the new finding that the cumulative mass fraction coarser than the size class of the discharge is consistent with the first-order grinding kinetic, the gi function of the new approach is only a single power function, i.e., =+k1xia, which will greatly reduce the parameter error and make the fit more accurate. The maximum error between simulation calculations and the actual experiment using the two methods did not exceed 1%, indicating that both models can accurately predict the fracture characteristics of magnetite. Because the new approach has fewer derived parameters, it addresses the conventional population balance model’s problems of large computational effort and poor fitting accuracy, making it more applicable to the study of the impact of parameters on the grinding status, with a simpler process and higher accuracy. In addition, this new method is applicable to minerals other than magnetite. Further research is required to verify its applicability to wide size ranges and continuous grinding.

Ceramic grinding, which in this paper is defined as a method of using ceramic materials as grinding media, is favored by many processing plants as an emerging high-efficiency and energy-saving grinding method. This paper investigates the effect of slurry mass concentration on the grinding characteristics of magnetite by taking the feed of the secondary ball mill for processing magnetite as the research object. The study results show that the slurry mass concentration significantly affects the ceramic ball grinding characteristics of magnetite, especially for coarse particles. When the grinding concentration is higher than 50%, the breakage rate of magnetite plummets to 1/3 of the value at low mass concentrations. The standard deviation of the breakage rate relative to the concentration gradually decreases as the feed size falls, indicating that the coarser the feed size, the more sensitive the ceramic ball grinding is to the concentration, and thus industrial secondary ceramic ball mills need to avoid grinding under high-quality concentrations. The change in the consistency parameter of distribution function and zero-order output characteristics signals a radical variation in the grinding characteristics of magnetite using the ceramic ball grinding method compared to conventional grinding. Because the ceramic ball grinding method can greatly reduce energy consumption while lowering the chance of overgrinding, this grinding method deserves more attention as the world works to reach carbon neutrality and emissions peak.

The cathode powder is obtained by wet crushing and screening, and the leaching behavior of Li, Ni, Co, Cu, and Al is then investigated using a ternary leaching system composed of ammonia, ammonium sulfite, and ammonium bicarbonate. Ammonium sulfite is necessary as a reductant to improve the Li, Ni, and Co leaching efficiencies, and ammonium bicarbonate acts as a buffer in ammoniacal solutions. A detailed understanding of the selective leaching process is obtained by investigating the effects of parameters such as the leaching reagent composition, leaching time (0–300 min), temperature (40–90 °C), solid-to-liquid ratio (10–50 g/L), and agitation speed (300–700 rpm). It is found that Ni and Cu could be almost fully leached out, while Al is hardly leached and Li(60.53%) and Co(80.99%) exhibit a moderate leaching efficiency. The results show that the optimum solid-liquid ratio of the leaching system is 20 g/L, and the increase of temperature and reaction time is beneficial to metal leaching. The leaching kinetics analysis shows that the chemical reaction control explains the leaching behavior of Li, Ni, and Co well. Therefore, this work may be beneficial for further recycling valuable metals from leaching solutions by introducing an extraction agent.

The mechanical properties of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) made of manufactured sand (MS) under four curing methods (steam, standard, sprinkler and saturated Ca(OH)2) were investigated via compressive, flexural and uniaxial tensile tests, and the bond strength of steel fiber and manufactured sand UHPC (MSUHPC) matrix. Based on the analysis of the microstructure, the influence mechanism of curing methods on the mechanical properties of materials was explored. The results showed that the early compressive strength of MSUHPC under steam curing (SM) is much higher than that of the other three curing methods, but the difference gradually decreases with the increase of age. The compressive strength of MSUHPC under SM is higher than that of river sand UHPC (RSUHPC). The bending strength and compressive strength of MSUHPC under different curing methods are similar, and the bending strength of 28 days steam cured samples is the highest. The uniaxial tensile properties of MSUHPC did not show significant difference under standard curing (SD), sprinkler curing (SP) and saturated Ca(OH)2 curing (CH), and the uniaxial tensile properties of MSUHPC under SM are slightly better than RSUHPC. The ultimate bond strength and fiber pullout energy of steel fiber and MSUHPC increase with the development of age. The bond strength and fiber pullout work of SM is higher than those of the other three curing methods, but there are lower increases in the later stage than that of the other three curing methods.

In this study, recycled fine aggregate (RFA), also known as recycled brick micro-powder (RBM), was used to completely replace quartz sand for the preparation of green, low-cost ecological engineered cementitious composites (ECO-ECC). RFA was used to replace ultrafine silica sand in the range of 0–100%. Firstly, the optimal replacement rate of RFA was determined, and the test results showed that the ECO-ECC prepared by fully replacing quartz sand with RFA as fine aggregate had strain hardening and multiple cracks, and the tensile strain of the specimens could reach 3%. Then the effects of fiber volume fraction and size effect on the mechanical properties of ECO-ECC were systematically investigated. The results showed that the fiber volume fraction has some influence on the mechanical properties of ECO-ECC. With the increase of fiber volume fraction, the ultimate deflection of the material keeps increasing up to 44.87 mm and the ultimate strain up to 3.46%, with good ductility and toughness. In addition, the compressive strength of the material has a good size effect, and there is a good linear relationship between different specimen sizes and standard sizes. It provides a good basis for engineering applications. Microscopic experimental results also showed that fibers play an important bridging role in the material, and the fiber pull-out and pull-break damage effects are significant.

In recent years, the magnesium phosphate cement (MPC)-based polymer is a potential type of material to quickly repair existing structures due to some distinguished advantages. In this paper, a series of experimental studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of the nano-Al2O3 (NA) substitution rate, water glass (WG) substitution rate and immersion time on the bond behavior between the magnesium phosphate cement mortar (MPCM) and steel fiber (SF). The main properties of the pull-out specimens were examined, including the bond strength, energy consumption of steel fiber pull-out, and water stability of the MPCM-SF interface evaluated by the bond strength retention rate and relative bond strength retention rate. In addition, the micro analysis of the fiber-matrix interface transition zone (ITZ) were conducted by using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and the compositions analysis of the MPC paste with NA and WG were conducted by using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The experimental results indicated that regardless of the immersion time, the NA substitution rate of 4% and 6% had a clearer improvement on the bond behavior between MPCM and SF than those of other types of the specimens; the WG substitution rate of 1% and 2% had a more significant improvement on the bond behavior between MPCM and SF than those of other types of the specimens; the distance between the larger width crack and the steel fiber for the specimen with a NA substitution rate of 6% was larger than than those of other types of the specimens, which showed that the ITZ between MPCM and SF with NA substitution rate of 6% exhibited a denser micro-structure and better micro-mechanical properties; the micro-structure of the ITZ between MPCM and SF gradually deteriorated as the immersion time increased, which showed that the water stability of the MPCM-SF interface gradually decreased.

The engineered cementitious composite (ECC) cracking process involves discontinuities. To solve this difficulty, a semi-discrete model for ECC based on peridynamics (PD) is established. In this paper, the pairwise force function is modified by using an improved damage coefficient. This model is established by modeling the matrix and the interactions between the fiber and matrix. The interactions between the fiber and matrix are applied to the material point in the form of forces. A reasonable horizon size and grid spacing ratio are obtained by analyzing the convergence of the ECC plate’s crack propagation. The validity of the PD model in this paper is demonstrated by comparing the uniaxial tensile simulation results of ECC plates with the relevant experimental results. Finally, the effects of pre-crack position and fiber volume fraction on dynamic fracture under an impact load are studied. This work helps to predict the crack propagation path of ECC structures which is important to guide engineering practice.
