Ensuring full contact between hot sinters and cooling gas is the key premise for the widespread application of vertical sinter cooling technology at an industrial scale. In this study, the gas–solid contact characteristics in a vertical sinter fixed bed were numerically investigated through a resolved CFD–DEM (computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method) method. The irregular sinter geometries were represented through the multi-sphere clumped method. The sinter packing in a vertical fixed bed was simulated via DEM modeling, and the immersed boundary method and dynamic mesh refining were employed in the CFD–DEM coupling to obtain a high-resolution fluid flow field around the sintered particles. The results showed that the average voidage of the dual-particle-size uniformly mixed bed generally decreased with the decrease in the average sinter particle size. The average bed voidage was mainly determined by the finer sinters, while the larger sinters mainly affected the large voidage structure and its distribution formed in the bed. Compared with the uniformly mixed bed, the segregated mixed bed exhibited a larger average voidage, and the voidage distribution also changed considerably. The fluid flow behavior in the mixed bed was largely influenced by the average bed voidage and the voidage distribution. As the average particle size decreased, the fluid flow in the bed became more uniformly distributed. Under different segregated packing situations, the bed voidage structures in the central zone and near-wall zone differed remarkably, with the fluid flow exhibiting a higher tendency to develop in the zone with larger voidage. The bed pressure drop generally increased with the decrease in the average sinter particle size. Among the uniformly and segregated mixed beds, the bed with “A-type” size segregation (i.e., finer sinters packed in the central zone while the larger sinters packed in the near-wall zone) showed the lowest overall pressure drop, but the particles inside the bed did not fully contact with the fluid. The bed with “B-type” size segregation (i.e., opposite of “A-type” segregation) exhibited both lower bed pressure drop and a desirable gas–solid contact condition. Therefore, “B-type” size segregation is recommended for the design of practical sinter packing in the vertical fixed bed. The experimental and simulated results showed similar bed pressure drops with increasing superficial air velocity. This validates the accuracy of the resolved CFD–DEM method applied in this study and lays an important foundation for the research of coupled gas–solid behavior in the vertical sinter cooling furnace.

Abstract Chemotherapy is one of the conventional treatments for cancer in clinical practice. However, poor delivery efficiency, systemic toxicity, and the lack of pharmacokinetic monitoring during treatment are the critical limitations of current chemotherapy. Herein, we reported a brand-new antitumor drug delivery strategy that harnesses an optical fiber endoscopically therapeutic probe. The fiber probe carries photosensitizers in the fiber core and antitumor agents on the fiber surface mediated by a temperature-responsive hydrogel film, giving rise to an activable photothermal-chemotherapy that orchestrates the localized hyperthermia and thermal-stimuli drug release to the tumor lesion. Furthermore, the dynamical drug release and in-situ temperature can be real-time supervised through the built-in fiber sensors, including the reflective Mach–Zehnder interferometer and fiber Bragg grating, to visualize the therapy process and thus improve the safety of treatment. Compared with conventional methods, the fiber-optic drug delivery can adequately take advantage of the chemotherapeutics through collaboratively recruiting the photoheating-mediated enhanced permeability and the hydrogel particle-assisted high drug retention, shedding new light on a “central-to-peripheral” drug pervasion and retention mechanism to destroy tumors completely. The fiber-optic chemotherapy strategy incorporates precise drug delivery, accurate controllability of drug release, high drug permeability and retention in tumor, low off-target rate, and real-time drug release and temperature feedback, performing a straightforward and precise photothermal-chemotherapy pathway. More than that, the proposed strategy holds tremendous promise to provide a revolutionized on-demand drug delivery platform for the highly efficient evaluation and screening of antitumor pharmaceuticals.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common and deadly cancer, often diagnosed at advanced stages, limiting surgical options. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a primary treatment for inoperable and involves the use of drug-eluting microspheres to slowly release chemotherapy drugs. However, patient responses to TACE vary, with some experiencing tumor progression and recurrence. Traditional TACE uses agents like oil-based drug emulsions and polyvinyl alcohol particles, which can permanently block blood vessels and increase tumor hypoxia. Additionally, TACE can suppress the immune system by reducing immune cell numbers and function, contributing to poor treatment outcomes. New approaches, like TACE using degradable starch microspheres and hydrogel-based materials, offer the potential to create different tumor environments that could improve both safety and efficacy. In our research, we developed a composite hydrogel (IF@Gel) made of Poloxamer-407 gel and Fe3O4 nanoparticles, loaded with idarubicin, to use as an embolic material for TACE in a rat model of orthotopic HCC. We observed promising therapeutic effects and investigated the impact on the tumor immune microenvironment, focusing on the role of immunogenic cell death (ICD). The composite hydrogel demonstrated excellent potential as an embolic material for TACE, and IF@Gel-based TACE demonstrated significant efficacy in rat HCC. Furthermore, our findings highlight the potential synergistic effects of ICD with anti-PD-L1 therapy, providing new insights into HCC treatment strategies. This study aims to provide improved treatment options for HCC and to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms of TACE and tumor environment regulation.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of focused ultrasound (FUS) for the treatment of vulvar low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (VLSIL) with persistent symptoms.Methods This retrospective analysis included 24 VLSIL patients who underwent FUS treatment. At each follow-up visit, the clinical response was assessed including changes in symptoms and signs. Objective In this study, we established a Sprague-Dawley rat model of vulvar squamous intraepithelial lesions and investigated the impact of focused ultrasound on the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and mutant type p53 (mtp53) in the vulvar skin of rats with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL).Materials and methods The vulvar skin of 60 rats was treated with dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) and mechanical irritation three times a week for 14 weeks. Rats with LSIL were randomly allocated into the experimental group or the control group. The experimental group was treated with focused ultrasound, while the control group received sham treatment.Results After 14 weeks treatment of DMBA combined with mechanical irritation, LSIL were observed in 44 (73.33%) rats, and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) were observed in 14 (23.33%) rats. 90.91% (20/22) of rats showed normal pathology and 9.09% (2/22) of rats exhibited LSIL in the experimental group at four weeks after focused ultrasound treatment. 22.73% (5/22) of rats exhibited LSIL, 77.27% (17/22) of rats progressed to HSIL in the control group. Abstract Refractory multi-principal element alloys (RMPEAs) draw great interest with their superior mechanical properties and extremely high melting points, yet the strengthening mechanism remains unclear. Here, we calculate the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for a single dislocation to move in RMPEAs consisting of 4 or 5 elements with or without short-range order (SRO) to represent strength by a machine learning-based interatomic potential. The increased CRSS is then attributed to high lattice distortion, elastic mismatch, and SRO strengthening, all of which originate from the solid solution strengthening theory. After detailed research of the CRSS across many RMPEAs systems with different composition ratios, we construct an XGBoost model to predict the CRSS from a few parameters and rank their importance. We find that lattice distortion strongly influences both dislocation types and reduces the screw-to-edge ratio in CRSS, while the elastic mismatch has a more significant impact on the screw dislocation than the edge one.

ObjectivePrevious studies have confirmed a positive correlation between the Triglyceride-Glucose (TyG) index and future risk of diabetes. However, evidence of this association in non-obese young populations remains limited. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the TyG index and the future risk of diabetes among non-obese young adults.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study included 113,509 non-obese young adults from China and 9,549 from Japan. The mean age was 35.73 ± 6.38 years, and 56,469 participants (45.89%) were male. The median follow-up duration was 3.38 years. The association between baseline TyG index and risk of diabetes was examined using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Non-linear relationships between the TyG index and risk of diabetes were identified using cubic splines and smoothed curve fitting in the Cox models. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were also conducted.ResultsAfter adjusting for covariates, the results indicated a positive correlation between the TyG index and risk of diabetes in non-obese young adults (HR=3.57, 95% CI: 2.92-4.36, P

Abstract Previous studies reported microplastics (MPs), antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). There is still a lack of research progress on the origin, fate, impact and hazards of MPs and ARGs in WWTPs. This paper fills a gap in this regard. In our search, we used “microplastics”, “antibiotic resistance genes”, and “wastewater treatment plant” as topic terms in Web of Science, checking the returned results for relevance by examining paper titles and abstracts. This study mainly explores the following points: (1) the origins and fate of MPs, antibiotics and ARGs in WWTPs; (2) the mechanisms of action of MPs, antibiotics and ARGs in sludge biochemical pools; (3) the impacts of MPs in WWTPs and the spread of ARGs; (4) and the harm inflicted by MPs and ARGs on the environment and human body. Contaminants in sewage sludge such as MPs, ARGs, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria enter the soil and water. Contaminants can travel through the food chain and thus reach humans, leading to increased illness, hospitalization, and even mortality. This study will enhance our understanding of the mechanisms of action among MPs, antibiotics, ARGs, and the harm they inflict on the human body.

Bioinspired, bistable snap-through structures are promising to release a burst of mechanical energy transformed from chemical energy, stored, and released incrementally during swelling/deswelling. Thin, disk-like hopper can harness the inhomogeneous deswelling to create the required constraint and flexible snap-through part. Here, hoppers composed of a single type of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) or concentric PDMS rimmed by a stiffer PDMS are cast into precisely micromachined molds. The mechanical properties and swelling/deswelling behavior of the constraining rim and flexible snap-through materials, in concert, allow a superior specific power of 1782 W kg−1, specific energy of 4.44 J kg−1 for a jump up to 321 mm, outperforming many more complex implementations. The jump benefits from an improved storage modulus ratio and a lower swell of the rim to the snap-through center part, which enhanced the confinement and elastic energy storage. A sharp spatial gradient in volume change between the two materials during deswelling, tunable by the porosity of the rim materials, enhances the jumping by allowing more material to store and release elastic energy, revealed by the strain analysis with 3D-digital image correlation. The illustrated multimaterials and porous materials strategies can promote the development of integrated energy harvesting and actuation for soft robotics.

Abstract Purpose To develop a deep learning radiomics of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (DLRMM)‐based model that incorporates preoperative and postoperative signatures for prediction of local tumor progression (LTP) after thermal ablation (TA) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods From May 2017 to October 2021, 417 eligible patients with HCC were retrospectively enrolled from three hospitals (one primary cohort [PC, n = 189] and two external test cohorts [ETCs][n = 135, 93]). DLRMM features were extracted from T1WI + C, T2WI, and DWI using ResNet18 model. An integrative model incorporating the DLRMM signature with clinicopathologic variables were further built to LTP risk stratification. The performance of these models were compared by areas under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) using DeLong test. Results A total of 1668 subsequences and 31,536 multiparametric MRI slice including T1WI, T2WI, and DWI were collected simultaneously. The DLRMM signatures were extracted from tumor and ablation zone, respectively. Ablative margin, multiple tumors, and tumor abutting major vessels were regarded as risk factors for LTP in clinical model. Abstract Purpose To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of combination therapy of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) and anti‐programmed cell death protein‐1 (PD‐1) therapy in the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods In this retrospective clinical research, from March 2018 to December 2019, 1158 HCC patients categorized as BCLC stage C were reviewed for eligibility. We utilized propensity score matching (PSM) to mitigate initial disparities between the groups. The evaluation of the best tumor response was conducted in accordance with mRECIST 1.1 criteria. The difference in survival outcomes including overall survival (OS), progression‐free survival (PFS), and objective response rate (ORR) between groups were compared. ObjectiveSARS-CoV-2 infection has been associated with an increase in inflammatory factors, a weakening of the immune system, and a potentially delay in wound healing following surgery or ablative treatment. In this retrospective cohort study, we aimed to investigate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on wound healing following cervical treatment in patients with squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL).MethodFrom November 2022 to February 2023, patients with SIL who underwent cervical ablative treatment or loop electrosurgical excision procedure at the People’s Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, were enrolled in the study. Of these, 29 patients who developed symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection and confirmed by an antigen test within one month after cervical treatment were included as experimental group, while the other 31 patients who received cervical treatment after recovering from SARS-CoV-2 infection were included in the control group. AbstractObjective This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of focused ultrasound (FU) at different focal depths in treating vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS).Methods A retrospective study was conducted on 84 patients with VLS. Among them, 43 cases were treated with FU at a focal depth of 2.5 mm and 41 cases at a focal depth of 4.0 mm. Therapeutic time, treatment energy, postoperative efficacy, complications and recurrence rates were compared.Results No statistically substantially differences in age, disease course, history of immune system diseases, lesion size and severity of symptoms were found between the two groups. All patients successfully received FU therapy. No significant difference in curative rate was observed between the two groups at 3, 6 and 12 months after FU therapy. At 12 months after FU therapy, the recurrence rate of the experimental group (FU treatment at 2.5 mm focal depth) was lower than the control group (FU treatment at 4.0 mm focal depth) (7.0% vs 24.4%, p = 0.027). The experimental group was treated for a shorter period of time [22.69 ± 0.64 (min) vs 24.93 ± 0.72(min), p = 0.022] and at a lower dose[5,026.05 ± 148.00(J) vs 5,484.26 ± 160.60(J) p = 0.039].Conclusion Compared with that at the routine focal depth (4.0 mm), FU therapy at a low treatment depth (2.5 mm) can achieve a similar therapeutic effect but lower recurrence rate, therapeutic time and treatment energy. Abstract Purpose Evaluate the efficacy and safety of triple therapeutic method (Hepatic Aarterial Infusion Chemotherapy—HAIC, lenvatinib and sequential ablation) in the treatment for Advanced Hepatocellular carcinoma (Ad‐HCC). Materials and Methods From November 2018 to June 2021, data from 150 consecutive Ad‐HCC patients were collected. All patients received HAIC combined with lenvatinib (H‐L group, n = 97) or HAIC combined with lenvatinib and sequential ablation (H‐L‐A group, n = 53). Complications, overall survival (OS), progression‐free survival (PFS) and intrahepatic progression‐free survival (IPFS) were compared between both groups. Results No significant differences of baseline characteristics were found between groups. The time of median follow‐up was 17.8 months (range, 6.8, 37.6 months). Abstract Background An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a life-threatening enlargement in the major vessel at the abdomen level. This study investigated the associations between different levels of red blood cell distribution width and all-cause mortality among patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture. It developed predictive models for all-cause mortality risk. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study using 2001 to 2012 MIMIC-III dataset. The study sample included 392 U.S. adults with abdominal aortic aneurysms who were admitted to ICU after the aneurysm rupture. Then we used two single-factor and four multivariable logistic regression models to examine the associations between different levels of red blood cell distribution and all-cause mortality (30 days and 90 days), controlling for demographics, comorbidities, vital signs, and other laboratory measurements. The receiver operator characteristic curves were calculated, and the areas under the curves were recorded. Results There were 140 (35.7%) patients with an abdominal aortic aneurysm in the red blood cell distribution width range between 11.7 and 13.8%, 117 (29.8%) patients in the range between 13.9 and 14.9%, and 135 (34.5%) patients in the range between 15.0 and 21.6%. Patients with higher red blood cell distribution width level (> 13.8%) tended to have a higher mortality rate (both 30 days and 90 days), congestive heart failure, renal failure, coagulation disorders, lower hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, red blood cell count, higher levels of chloride, creatinine, sodium, and BUN (All P 13.8%) had the highest statistically significant odd ratios of 30 days and 90 days of all-cause mortality than lower red blood cell distribution width levels. The area under the RDW curve was lower (P = 0.0009) than that of SAPSII scores. Conclusions Our study found that patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture with a higher blood cell distribution had the highest risk of all-cause mortality. Using the blood cell distribution width level in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture to predict mortality should be considered in future clinical practice.

Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of low-intensity ultrasound (LIUS) in promoting uterine involution and relieving postpartum pain. Methods The randomized controlled clinical trial in this study was conducted at five centers in three regions across China from June 2014 to December 2014. A total of 498 subjects were randomly divided into two groups. The LIUS group received ultrasound treatment, and the control group received sham ultrasound treatment. The fundal height and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores of the subjects following cesarean section were recorded separately before and after five treatments. The incidence of adverse events was recorded, while the records on lochia duration were obtained by telephone follow-up. The Full Analysis Set (FAS) comprised all subjects randomized who received at least one treatment. The Per-Protocol Set (PPS) comprised all patients who did not seriously violate the study protocol and had good compliance with complete report forms. Efficacy analyses were performed based on the FAS and PPS. All safety analyses were performed based on the safety set (SS), which included all patients who received at least one treatment. Aim To investigate the individualized survival benefit of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) and sequential ablation treatment in large hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients.Methods Between February 2016 and December 2020, a total of 228 HCC patients (diameter > 5 cm) who underwent HAIC alone (HAIC group, n = 135) or HAIC and sequential ablation (HAIC-ablation group, n = 93) treatment were reviewed. We applied the inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) to adjust for potential bias of two treatment groups. Abstract Background Despite advances in endovascular techniques to treat acute limb ischemia (ALI), evaluation of clinical outcomes for revascularization remains challenging, especially the accurate quantification of post-endovascular limb perfusion. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy and value of 2D perfusion angiography to evaluate endovascular intervention for ALI. Methods A total of 47 patients with ALI were retrospectively analyzed. The transcutaneous oxygen partial pressure (TcPO2) was obtained using laser Doppler blood perfusion monitoring. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) and angiographic images were obtained before and after endovascular intervention. iFlow imaging was used to obtain color-coded images. Regions of interest (ROIs) at the femoral head, knee joint, and ankle joint were selected to obtain the time to peak (TTP). The differences in the TTP between the knee and femoral head regions (TTP difference in the knee area) and between the ankle and knee regions (TTP difference in the ankle area) were observed. The TTP, ABI, and TcPO2 between the complete response (CR), partial response (PR), no response (NR), and amputation (AM) groups were compared. The correlation between TTP changes in the ankle area (ΔTTP) and changes in ABI (ΔABI)/changes in TcPO2 (ΔTcPO2) was analyzed. Habitat quality assessment is an important basis for ecological restoration practice. Taking the Tacheng region as an example, the InVEST model was used to evaluate the habitat quality of the Tacheng region in five periods from 2000 to 2020, and analyze the reasons for its changes, to provide theoretical guidance for ecological restoration practice in arid areas. The conclusions were that from 2000 to 2020, the habitat quality in the Tacheng region improved slightly, and the value of the habitat index in the Tacheng region was the highest in 2010, which was 0.577, and then decreased slightly. The habitat quality in the Tacheng region was significantly influenced by land use type conversion and precipitation. The change in land use type directly affected the change in habitat quality. The study region is located in an arid area; the forest land and grassland native to the region have more vegetation communities and genera of species and can be self-sustaining and resilient to disturbance, having high scores for habitat quality. The species of arable land is a monoculture; it cannot be self-sustaining and resilient to disturbance, and though it has high vegetation cover, the value of habitat quality is lower than that of forestland and grassland. The vegetation of unused land is rare, and the ecosystem of unused land is sensitive and vulnerable; the habitat quality scores are very low. The conversion of forest land, grassland, arable land, and unused land would directly affect the value of habitat quality, and conversion was the main factor affecting the change in habitat quality. In addition, precipitation was also an important factor affecting the change in habitat quality in the Tacheng region, which affected the biomass of natural vegetation and then affected the habitat quality. The results provided the temporal and spatial change of habitat quality and its driving forces in the Tacheng region, which helps determine appropriate measures and sites in ecological restoration projects.

Objective To compare the clearance rate of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) in patients with a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) 12 months after focused ultrasound (FUS) or loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP), and analyze the influencing factors. Methods A retrospective cohort was established in HSIL patients with HR-HPV infection treated with FUS or LEEP from 2015 to 2019. The cohort consisted of 321 patients under 30 years of age, of which 119 patients received FUS and 202 patients received LEEP. The Cox regression model was used to identify the influencing factors for HR-HPV clearance. Kaplan–Meier method was applied to estimate the efficacy of FUS and LEEP in HR-HPV clearance, and the log-rank test was used to compare the efficacy difference between FUS and LEEP. Results Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that both FUS and LEEP were independent influencing factors for HR-HPV clearance. HR-HPV cleared faster in the FUS group than in the LEEP group [the median time to HR-HPV clearance: 6 months in the FUS group (95% CI: 5.492–6.508) and 6 months in the LEEP group (95% CI: 5.734–6.266), p = 0.021]. The HR-HPV clearance rates at 6 and 12 months were 54.6% and 94.1% respectively in the FUS group, and 50.5% and 79. 2%, respectively in the LEEP group (p = 0.001 at 6 months, p = 0.000 at 12 months). Conclusions For HPV-positive HSIL patients under 30, FUS had a better HR-HPV clearance effect than LEEP 1 year after treatment. FUS may be a viable modality for the treatment of young HSIL patients.

Aiming at the problems of the low grade of rubidium (Rb) in biotite, and long leaching time and low leaching efficiency of Rb in mica ore, the chlorination roasting-assisted ultrasonic enhanced water leaching method was employed to extract Rb from biotite ore in this study. During the chlorination roasting process, the optimal conditions were obtained, namely roasting temperature 900 °C, roasting time 40 min, and the mass ratio of ore to calcium chloride 1:1, the optimum leaching rate was 96.75 %. Compared with conventional leaching, the ultrasonic field could greatly shorten the leaching time and realize fast and efficient leaching of Rb. The optimal conditions for ultrasonic enhanced leaching were: ultrasonic power 100 W, leaching temperature 60 °C, leaching time 20 min, liquid–solid ratio 4:1, the Rb leaching rate was 98.73 %, which was 40 min shorter than conventional leaching. The particle size and SEM results indicated that the samples by ultrasonic leaching were smaller, no agglomeration phenomenon in a large area, and the surface of the samples was relatively smooth.

Ferroptosis requires not only the accumulation of iron ions, but also changes in many ferroptosis-related regulators, including a decrease in GPX4 and inhibition of SLC7A11 for classical ferroptosis, a deletion of FSP1 or GCH1. Surprisingly, adipose tissue (AT) in the obesity conditions is also accompanied by iron buildup, decreased GSH, and increased ROS. On the neurological side, the pro-inflammatory factor released by AT may have first caused ferroptosis in the vagus nerve by inhibiting of the NRF2-GPX4 pathway, resulting in disorders of the autonomic nervous system. On the immune side, obesity may cause M2 macrophages ferroptosis due to damage to iron-rich ATMs (MFehi) and antioxidant ATMs (Mox), and lead to Treg cells ferroptosis through reductions in NRF2, GPX4, and GCH1 levels. At the same time, the reduction in GPX4 may also trigger the ferroptosis of B1 cells. In addition, some studies have also found the role of GPX4 in neutrophil autophagy, which is also worth pondering whether there is a connection with ferroptosis. In conclusion, this review summarizes the associations between neuroimmune regulation associated with obesity and ferroptosis, and on the basis of this, highlights their potential molecular mechanisms, proposing that ferroptosis in one or more cells in a multicellular tissue changes the fate of that tissue.

The accumulation of proline impacts the defense mechanisms of plants against the harmful effects of adverse environmental conditions; however, its concentration in plants is associated with the metabolism of N. Therefore, the effects of exogenous organic [glutamate (Glu)/arginine (Arg)] and inorganic [nitrate (NO3−)/ammonium (NH4+)] N on the accumulation of proline (Pro) in rice plants under trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] stress were studied through using the mass balance matrix model (MBMM). Application of ‘NH4+’ showed the largest contribution to the Pro content in rice shoots under different concentrations of Cr(III), followed by ‘NO3−’, ‘Arg’, and ‘Glu’ applications. On the other hand, ‘Arg’ application displayed the largest contribution to the Pro content in roots under Cr(III) stress, followed by ‘NH4+’, ‘Glu’, and ‘NO3−’ applications. The combined application of ‘NH4++Arg’ showed the greatest contribution to the Pro content in both roots and shoots of Cr(III)-treated rice seedlings, while the application of ‘NO3−+Glu’ showed the least contribution to the Pro content in rice seedlings. The current study indicated that the endogenous level of Pro in rice seedlings is quite sensitive to Cr(III) stress under different N sources, and the mathematical modeling showed a reliable result while estimating the relationship between Pro content and N source application.

Objective The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of focused ultrasound (FU) and interferon drug therapy for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 1 (CIN1) and chronic cervicitis associated with high risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection, as well as analyze the influencing factors. Methods A retrospective cohort study was performed from January 2017 to December 2019. A total of 592 patients were enrolled, of which 300 patients were treated with FU and 292 patients were treated with interferon drugs. Kaplan-Meier curves and a COX regression model were used to compare the curative effects of the two therapeutic methods using HR-HPV clearance as the main outcome. The relationship between age, HR-HPV infection type, pathological type, preoperative HR-HPV status and HR-HPV clearance were also analyzed. Results The median time for HR-HPV clearance was 6.00 months (95% CI: 5.24–6.76) in the FU group and 26.00 months (95% CI: 22.32–29.68) in the medication group. A significant difference was observed between the two groups (χ2 =198.902, p = 0.000). The HR-HPV clearance rate was 4.927 (95% CI 3.840–6.321; p = 0.000) times higher in the patients treated with FU than those treated with interferon drugs. In the FU group, no significant difference was observed in HR-HPV clearance rate between CIN1 and chronic cervicitis (χ2=0.660, p = 0.416), which was also insignificant between HR-HPV persistent and non-persistent infections (χ2=0.751, p = 0.386). Conclusion FU therapy can eliminate HR-HPV infections in a short period of time. Moreover, the treatment efficacy of FU was significantly superior to that of interferon drugs.

Salt crust is a soil layer formed by the cementation of soluble salt on the surface or inside of soil with soil particles. The salt crust can alter the soil’s ability to resist wind erosion. To explore the characteristics of different types of salt crust, six kinds of salt (CaCl2, KCl, Na2SO4, NaCl, Na2CO3, and NaHCO3) were selected and six salt contents (0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4%) were set up to conduct the experiment of a sandy soil crust. The experiment compares the characteristics of crust appearance, compressive strength, and toughness of six selected kinds of salt crust. The results showed that Na2SO4 formed the subflorescence, while CaCl2, KCl, NaCl, Na2CO3, and NaHCO3 formed the efflorescences. The compressive strength and toughness of Na2SO4 salt crust initially increased and then decreased as the salt content increased, and both the strength and toughness reached the maximum when the salt content was 3%. At first, the compressive strength of NaCl crusts increased and then stabilized as a result of the increase in salt content. The toughness of the NaCl salt crust experienced an initial increase and then a decrease, reaching the maximum when the salt content was 3%. The compressive strength and toughness of the salt crusts of CaCl2 and KCl increased as the salt content increased. There was a slight increase in the compressive strength of the crusts formed by Na2CO3 and NaHCO3, with hardly any noticeable change even as the salt content increased, and the maximum compressive strength was only 0.03 and 0.40 MPa, respectively. The crusts of Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 were susceptible to wind erosion, while the crusts of KCl, CaCl2, NaCl, and Na2SO4, having high compressive strength and crust toughness, were capable of resisting wind erosion.

Abstract Soil salt crust can change the structure of aeolian soil and improve its resistance to wind erosion. Four ions (Na+, Ca2+, Cl−, and SO4 2−) with high contents in aeolian soil were selected for a salt crust experiment. The experiment set a variety of gradients of soil salt contents and salt mixing ratios of Na2SO4 and CaCl2. The physical properties of the salt crust were tested, and the wind erosion resistance of the salt crust was discussed. The results showed that the soil salt contents and salt mixing ratio influenced the resistance of the salt crust, especially in terms of its compressive strength and toughness. The former affected the compressive strength of the salt crust by changing the amount of cemented soil salt. The latter affected the kinds of crystals by changing the ion ratio, thus changing the structure of the salt crust and affecting its wind erosion resistance. The wind erosion resistance of the salt crust is complicated by the interaction between the soil salt content and salt mixing ratio. A multilayer crust can be formed in mixed salt, which has a strong wind erosion resistance. This result provides new findings on flowing sand soil and a new method for the treatment of flowing sand soil.

Abstract Background Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exert positive effects in chronic wounds. However, critical parameters, such as the most effective administration routes, remain unclear. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of topical and systemic transplantation MSCs on diabetic ischemic wound healing and explored the underlying mechanisms. Method A diabetic ischemic wound model was created on the dorsal foot of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rat. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) were administered via two routes: topical injection and intravenous (IV) infusion. Wound healing outcomes and blood glucose level were assessed dynamically. Meanwhile, blood flow recovery was evaluated in ischemic gastrocnemius muscles. The homing and transdifferentiation of mKate2-labeled BM-MSCs were assessed by fluorescence imaging and immunohistochemistry (IHC) analysis. Result Both topical and systemic treatments had a positive effect on the diabetic ischemic wound showing a significant reduction in wound area at day 14. Histological results showed an increase in the length of epithelial edges, collagen content, microvessel density in the wound bed, and a higher expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Meanwhile, systemic administration can ameliorate hyperglycemia and improve the blood perfusion of the ischemic hindlimb. BM-MSCs administered systemically were found distributed in wounded tissue and transdifferentiated into endothelial cells. Furthermore, BM-MSCs stimulated angiogenesis at wound sites by downregulating phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) and activation of AKT signaling pathway. Conclusions The results demonstrated that both transplantation delivery method (topical and systemic) of BM-MSCs accelerated wound healing remarkably under pathological conditions. Nevertheless, systemic administration has the potential to ameliorate hyperglycemia and repair the damaged tissue.

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels after ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (USgHIFU) treatment of cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP). Methods A retrospective case series study was conducted in the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College. Thirty-two women with cesarean scar pregnancy who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study between January 2018 and December 2019. All patients underwent USgHIFU treatment with or without suction curettage. Intraoperative blood loss in suction curettage and hysteroscopy procedures, time to return of β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) to normal levels, and time to recovery of normal menstruation were recorded. AMH levels before and 3 months after HIFU treatment were compared to determine whether USgHIFU treatment affected ovarian reserve. Results AMH levels before and 3 months after HIFU ablation were 1.87 ± 1.19 ng/ml and 1.90 ± 1.17 ng/ml, respectively. There was no significant difference in AMH levels between the two-time points (p > .05). The median volume of intraoperative blood loss was 20 ml, the median time for the serum β-hCG level to return to normal was 35.5 days, and the median time of menstruation recovery was 39 days. Conclusions USgHIFU treatment for CSP was effective and safe without affecting ovarian reserve.

Objective This study was aimed at investigating the clinical efficacy and studying the possible mechanism of FUS applications to treat cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 1 (CIN1). Methods This was a prospective clinical study, in which 30 patients with CIN1 (28/30 of the patients were HPV positive) were enrolled and treated with FUS therapy by gynecologist. All patients were followed up for 3 months after FUS therapy. Telephone interviews, PAP smear, colposcopic examinations, cervical biopsies and HPVDNA tests were performed to assess the safety and effectiveness of FUS therapy for HPV-positive CIN1. The expression of p16, Ki-67 and Fas in the cervical tissues were examined in order to account for the possible mechanism of FUS therapy for CIN1 with HPV infection. Results FUS therapy was tolerated well, and no severe complications were observed in any patient. After FUS treatment, twenty-five patients were cured completely, and two cases were improved with the cervical smear results reversed to normal, and three cases remained the same status as before treatment. The total effectiveness rate was 90.00% (27/30). Abstract Background In recent years, skeletal muscle-related ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) has become more common. IRI can lead to severe limb injuries, multiple organ failure, and even death in some cases. However, there is still a lack of rapid and sensitive detection methods for IRI in skeletal muscle. This study aims to explore the value of computed tomography perfusion imaging (CTPI) and color-coded digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in assessing acute IRI of skeletal muscle in a rabbit model. Methods Fifty New Zealand white rabbits were randomly assigned to the ischemia-reperfusion (IR) group (n = 40) or sham group (n = 10). After 3 h of surgically-induced hindlimb ischemia, the IR group underwent reperfusion and CTPI and color-coded DSA were taken to assess the skeletal muscle at 0, 6, 12, or 24 h post-reperfusion. The data from CTPI and DSA in the right and left hindlimbs, blood flow (AF-R/L), blood volume (BV-R/L), contrast clearance rate (C-R/L) and the maximum contrast enhancement values (peak-R/L) were obtained. Serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), creatine kinase (CK), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured. The statistical correlation between the above parameters (CTPI, color-coded DSA, and biochemical markers) was analyzed. Results The mean value of AF-R/L, BV-R/L, C-R/L and peak-R/L decreased linearly from 1.07 ± 0.08 to 0.75 ± 0.11, 1.03 ± 0.06 to 0.85 ± 0.14, 0.93 ± 0.15 to 0.71 ± 0.18, and 1.07 ± 0.01 to 0.47 ± 0.04, respectively. Abstract Much theoretical evidence has demonstrated that a trade‐off between competitive and dispersal ability plays an important role in facilitating species coexistence. However, experimental evidence from natural communities is still rare. Here, we tested the competition–dispersal trade‐off hypothesis in an alpine grassland in the Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang, China, by quantifying competitive and dispersal ability using a combination of 4 plant traits (seed mass, ramet mass, height, and dispersal mode). Our results show that the competition–dispersal trade‐off exists in the alpine grassland community and that this pattern was primarily demonstrated by forbs. The results suggest that most forb species are constrained to be either good competitors or good dispersers but not both, while there was no significant trade‐off between competitive and dispersal ability for most graminoids. This might occur because graminoids undergo clonal reproduction, which allows them to find more benign microenvironments, forage for nutrients across a large area and store resources in clonal structures, and they are thus not strictly limited by the particular resources at our study site. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the CD trade‐off has been tested for plants across the whole life cycle in a natural multispecies plant community, and more comprehensive studies are still needed to explore the underlying mechanisms and the linkage between the CD trade‐off and community composition.

The campaign life of a blast furnace is largely limited by the erosion state of its hearth section. Therefore, the study of hearth erosion is important for blast furnace ironmaking. In this study, the hearth erosion of the WISCO No. 1 blast furnace was investigated in combination with the numerical analysis of the iron flow and heat transfer in the hearth. The distributions of the wall shear stress and the temperature in the hearth were simulated and the hearth sections with high erosion risk were discussed. The hearth lining with higher shear stress is generally located near the taphole region and the 1423 K isotherm is totally located inside the hearth lining structure, with a deeper position in the central part of the hearth bottom. Based on the measurement data from the hearth damage investigation, the erosion state of the hearth bottom and the lower part of the hearth sidewall is more serious. The erosion line at the hearth bottom showed a typical “pot-bottom” shaped contour and for the hearth corner section, the average erosion depth was about 1/3 of the total wall thickness. The empirical expressions between the hearth erosion depth and the wall shear stress and the temperature were established. Moreover, the effects of key iron tapping factors on the wall shear stress and the effect of the hearth’s refractory structure on the heat transfer in the hearth are respectively discussed, aiming to provide more suggestions for hearth protection.

Abstract Estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is a complicated task in forensic medicine, especially during homicide and unwitnessed death investigations. Many biological, chemical, and physical indicators can be used to determine the postmortem interval, but most are not accurate. Here, we present a novel matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) method that can be used for the estimation of PMI using molecular images and multivariate analyses. In this study, we demonstrate that both rat and human liver tissues of various PMIs (0, 2, 4, and 6days) can be discriminated using MALDI imaging and principal component analysis (PCA). Using genetic algorithm (GA), supervised neural network (SNN), and quick classifier (QC) methods, we built 6 classification models, which showed high recognition capability and good cross-validation. The histological changes in all the samples at different time points were also consistent with the changes seen in MALDI imaging. Our work suggests that MALDI-TOF MS, along with multivariate analysis, can be used to determine intermediate PMIs.

Objective This study aimed to introduce and evaluate the safety and efficacy of the relay puncture technique in patients with complicated lower extremity arterial diseases. Methods A total of 21 patients (16 male and five female patients; median age: 68.5 years old), who had suffered from lower extremity arterial diseases between December 2014 and July 2017, were retrospectively collected. For all patients, the contralateral femoral artery was not available for puncture access, and the length of the devices was too short for the brachial artery approach. Therefore, the relay puncture technique, in which the first puncture was performed on the brachial artery, followed by an antegrade puncture on the femoral artery, was used to accomplish the endovascular therapy. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and/or percutaneous transluminal stenting were/was used to assess the efficacy of the relay puncture technique. The ankle–brachial index (ABI) and Rutherford clinical classification were used to evaluate the improvement of symptoms after treatment. Patients were followed up for 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, and annually (mean: 16.6 months) after discharge. Results The relay puncture treatment had a 100% technical success rate, and immediately decreased the ischemic symptoms of patients after the procedure. The ABI significantly increased from 0.33 ± 0.18 to 0.75 ± 0.21 at the 1-year follow-up time point (P < 0.05). No serious complications occurred during the follow-up period. The 1-year primary patency rate was 71.43%. Conclusion The relay puncture technique is a feasible technique in the hands of experienced and skilled equipment operators for the treatment of lower extremity arterial diseases, when the contralateral femoral artery is not available for puncture, and the length of the device is too short to treat the distal lesion of the femoral artery and popliteal artery through the brachial artery approach.

Calcified roasting followed by dilute sulfuric acid leaching is a promising process for cleaner vanadium extraction from converter vanadium slag. However, some impurities, like Ca, Mg, Mn, Si and Al, also transfer into the leaching solution, accompanying V during the dilute sulfuric acid leaching, leading to the product of vanadium pentoxide prepared from this acidic vanadium-bearing solution, inferior to the product from the traditional process of sodium roasting and water leaching. A chemical precipitation method was firstly proposed to purify this acidic vanadium-bearing solution with a new prepared remover of MnNH4F3, which combines neutralization and fluoride precipitation into one operational step to remove impurities of Ca2+, Mg 2+, Al3+ and Si4+ in an acidic pH range, simultaneously. Effecting factors involved in the purification process were investigated. It was found that removals of Ca, Mg and Al were all over 95% and around 55% of Si was removed as well at stirring speed of 200 rpm, adding coefficient of 1.6, temperature of 50 °C, reaction time of 30 min and pH of 4.50 ± 0.05, while the loss of vanadium was kept lower than 5%, which was attributed to the reason that the purification reactions mainly proceeded on the surface of the remover. Adding flocculant of polyacrylamide was conductive to accelerating sedimentation of the precipitate and reducing the loss of vanadium. Meanwhile, the filter aid of diatomaceous could improve the filtration performance of the slurry. Ammonium persulfate could effectively oxidize and separate Mn2+ in the form of MnO2 from the vanadium-bearing solution which had been treated by MnNH4F3, but performed less selectivity over Mn2+, and the loss of vanadium was unacceptable. The product of vanadium pentoxide prepared from the purified vanadium-containing solution satisfied the requirements for the standard of grade 98.

Avalanche disasters are extremely destructive and catastrophic, often causing serious casualties, economic losses and surface erosion. However, far too little attention has been paid to utilizing remote sensing mapping avalanches quickly and automatically to mitigate calamity. Such endeavors are limited by formidable natural conditions, human subjective judgement and insufficient understanding of avalanches, so they have been incomplete and inaccurate. This paper presents an objective and widely serviceable method for regional auto-detection using the scattering and interference characteristics of avalanches extracted from Sentinel-1 SLC images. Six indices are established to distinguish avalanches from surrounding undisturbed snow. The active avalanche belts in Kizilkeya and Aktep of the Western TianShan Mountains in China lend urgency to this research. Implementation found that smaller avalanches can be consistently identified more accurately in descending images. Specifically, 281 and 311 avalanches were detected in the ascending and descending of Kizilkeya, respectively. The corresponding numbers on Aktep are 104 and 114, respectively. The resolution area of single avalanche detection can reach 0.09 km2. The performance of the model was excellent in all cases (areas under the curve are 0.831 and 0.940 in descending and ascending of Kizilkeya, respectively; and 0.807 and 0.938 of Aktep, respectively). Overall, the evaluation of statistical indices are POD > 0.75, FAR < 0.34, FOM < 0.13 and TSS > 0.75. The results indicate that the performance of the innovation proposed in this paper, which employs multivariate comprehensive descriptions of avalanche characteristics to actualize regional automatic detection, can be more objective, accurate, applicable and robust to a certain extent. The latest and more complete avalanche inventory generated by this design can effectively assist in addressing the increasingly severe avalanche disasters and improving public awareness of avalanches in alpine areas.

By this analytical method, the outputs and cooperation of authors, the hot research topics, the vital references and the development trend of OPV are identified and visualized. Different from the traditional review articles by the experts on OPV, this work provides a new method of visualizing information about the development of the OPV technology research over the past decade quantitatively.

The carburization of molten iron is close to saturation in the blast furnace process, while that in the flash ironmaking process is uncertain because there is no pressure from solid charge and no carburization reactions occurring between the deadman and hot metal. Some experiments were conducted to reveal the kinetic mechanism of coke dissolving in carbon-iron melts. Reduced iron powder, electrolytic iron as well as chemical pure graphite were used as experiment materials. With high-purity argon injected as the protective gas, the specimens were heated up to 1873 K in a tubular resistance furnace to study the isothermal mechanism. The results show that the composition of the ferrous sample affects the dissolution rate. When the FeO content of the iron-bearing material rises from 0% to 4.76%, the apparent dissolution rate constant, kt, falls from 7.98 × 10−6 m/s to 5.48 × 10−6 m/s. There are some differences amongst the dissolution rate coefficients of different cokes despite interacting with similar carbon-iron melts, with coke 1 of 7.98 × 10−6 m/s, coke 2 of 5.17 × 10−6 m/s, and coke 3 of 3.77 × 10−6 m/s. Besides, this index decreases with the increase of the dissolution time and solely depends on the procedure of the mass transfer. A negative correlation is demonstrated between kt and the sulfur content in the iron bath as well. The content of silicon dioxide in the coke has a significant influence on kt. Additionally, the dissolution rate coefficient increases with the increase of the graphitization degree of coke.

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are regarded as a remarkably promising alternative to current lithium-ion batteries, addressing the requirements for large-scale high-energy storage. Nevertheless, the sluggish kinetics involving oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hamper the widespread application of ZABs, necessitating the development of high-efficiency and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts. Here, we report oxygen atom-bridged Fe, Co dual-metal dimers (FeOCo-SAD), in which the active site Fe-O-Co-N6 moiety boosts exceptional reversible activity toward ORR and OER in alkaline electrolytes. Specifically, FeOCo-SAD achieves a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.87 V for ORR and an overpotential of 310 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for OER, with a potential gap (ΔE) of only 0.67 V Meanwhile, FeOCo-SAD manifests high performance with a peak power density of 241.24 mW cm-2 in realistic rechargeable ZABs. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the introduction of an oxygen bridge in the Fe, Co dimer induced charge spatial redistribution around Fe and Co atoms. This enhances the activation of oxygen and optimizes the adsorption/desorption dynamics of reaction intermediates. Consequently, energy barriers are effectively reduced, leading to a strong promotion of intrinsic activity toward ORR and OER. This work suggests that oxygen-bridging dual-metal dimers offer promising prospects for significantly enhancing the performance of reversible oxygen electrocatalysis and for creating innovative catalysts that exhibit synergistic effects and electronic states.
