Insulation composition and electrical characteristics such as breakdown of L[N.sub.2], barrier, kapton films and surface flashover on Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) in Liquid nitrogen (L[N.sub.2]) are analyzed. The values are compared and the most suitable value is applied to insulating design of the high temperature superconducting transformer.

Abstract

The insulating properties between cryocooler and magnet coil of conduction cooled high temperature superconducting (HTS) superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) are discussed. Findings reveal similar surface flashover voltage and breakdown voltage of AIN, [Al.sub.2] [O.sub.3] and sapphire.
