The real/atomic structure of single phase homogeneous nanocrystalline Ce0.5Zr0.5O2±δ oxides prepared by a modified Pechini route and Ni-loaded catalysts of methane dry reforming on their bases was studied by a combination of neutron diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, total X-ray scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The effects of sintering temperature and pretreatment in H2 were elucidated. The structure of the mixed oxides corresponds to a tetragonal space group indicating a homogeneous distribution of Ce and Zr cations in the lattice. A pronounced disordering of the oxygen sublattice was revealed by neutron diffraction, supposedly due to incorporation of water into the structure when in contact with air promoted by the generation of anion vacancies in the lattice after reduction or calcination at high temperatures. However, such disordering has not resulted in any occupation of the oxygen interstitial positions in the bulk of the nanodomains.

Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 mixed oxides were prepared in a flow reactor in supercritical isopropanol with acetylacetone as a complexing agent. Variation of the nature of the Zr salt and the temperature of synthesis affected the phase composition, morphology and specific surface area of oxides. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies revealed formation of metastable t” and t’ phases. Oxides are comprised of agglomerates with sizes depending on the synthesis parameters. Loading NiO decreases the specific surface area without affecting X-ray particle sizes of supports. Such sintering was the most pronounced for a support with the highest specific surface area, which resulted in the lowest surface content of Ni as estimated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in the formation of flattened NiO particles partially embedded into the support. The catalytic activity and stability of these samples in the dry reforming of methane were determined by the surface concentration of Ni and the morphology of its particle controlled by the metal-support interaction, which also depends on the type of catalyst pretreatment. Samples based on ceria-zirconia oxides prepared under these conditions provide a higher specific catalytic activity as compared with the traditional Pechini route, which makes them promising for the practical application.

Non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is becoming an increasingly important approach to propylene production, while cobalt-containing catalysts have recently demonstrated great potential for use in this reaction, providing efficiencies comparable to those of industrially employed Pt- and Cr-based catalytic systems. It is therefore essential to clarify the nature of their active sites, especially since contradictory opinions on this issue are expressed in the literature. In this study, efforts were made to determine the state of Co in cobalt aluminates (CoAl2O4-Al2O3) responsible for PDH under typical operating conditions (600 °C, 1 atm). It is shown that the catalyst with a low cobalt content (Co/Al = 0.1) ensured the highest selectivity to propylene, ca. 95%, while maintaining significant propylene conversion. The structural motifs such as cobalt oxide and metallic cobalt nanoparticles, in addition to tetrahedral Co2+ species in the CoAl2O4 spinel system, were evaluated as potential active-site ensembles based on the obtained catalytic performance data in combination with the XRD, H2-TPR, TEM and XPS characteristics of as-synthesized, spent and spent–regenerated catalysts. It is revealed that the most likely catalytic sites linked to PDH are the Co-oxide forms tightly covering alumina or embedded in the spinel structure. However, additional in situ tuning is certainly needed, probably through the formation of surface oxygen vacancies rather than through a deeper reduction in Co0 as previously thought. The reduction of Co-based oxides doped with Al3+ ions has been studied using in situ XRD and TPR techniques. Al3+-modified Co3O4 oxides with the Al mole fraction Al/(Co + Al) = 1/6; 1/7.5 were prepared via coprecipitation, with further calcination at 500 and 850 °C. Using XRD and HAADF-STEM combined with EDS element mapping, the Al3+ cations were dissolved in the Co3O4 lattice; however, the cation distribution differed and depended on the calcination temperature. Heating at 500 °C led to the formation of an inhomogeneous (Co,Al)3O4 solid solution; further treatment at 850 °C provoked the partial decomposition of mixed Co-Al oxides and the formation of particles with an Al-depleted interior and Al-enriched surface. It has been shown that the reduction of cobalt oxide by hydrogen occurs via the following transformations: (Co,Al)3O4 → (Co,Al)O → Co. Depending on the Al distribution, the course of reduction changes. In the case of the inhomogeneous (Co,Al)3O4 solid solution, Al stabilizes intermediate Co(II)-Al(III) oxides during reduction. When Al3+ ions are predominantly on the surface of the Co3O4 particles, the intermediate compound consists of Al-depleted and Al-enriched Co(II)-Al(III) oxides, which are reduced independently. Different distributions of elemental Co and Al in mixed oxides simulate different types of the interaction phase in Co3O4/γ-Al2O3-supported catalysts. A mixed oxide of silver and nickel AgNiO2 was obtained via co-precipitation in alkaline medium. This oxide demonstrates room temperature activity in the reaction of ethylene epoxidation with a high selectivity (up to 70%). Using the PDF method, it was found that the initial structure of AgNiO2 contains stacking faults and silver vacancies, which cause the nonstoichiometry of the oxide (Ag/Ni < 1). It has been established that on the initial surface of AgNiO2 oxide, silver state can be considered as an intermediate between Ag2O and Ag0 (i.e. Agδ+-like), while nickel is characterized by signs of a deeply oxidized state (Ni3+-like). The interaction of AgNiO2 with C2H4 at room temperature leads to the simultaneous removal of two oxygen species with Eb(O 1s) = 529.0 eV and 530.5 eV considered as nucleophilic and electrophilic oxygen states, respectively. Nucleophilic oxygen was attributed to the lattice oxygen (Ag–O–Ni), while the electrophilic species with epoxidation activity was associated with the weakly bound oxygen stabilized on the surface. According to the TPR-C2H4 data, a large number of weakly bound oxygen species were found on the pristine AgNiO2 surface. The removal of such species at room temperature didn't result in noticeable structural transformation of delafossite. As the temperature of ethylene oxidation over AgNiO2 increased, the appearance of Ag0 particles was first observed below 200 °C followed by the complete destruction of the delafossite structure at higher temperatures. Mixed nanocrystalline Ce-Zr-O oxides (Ce/Zr = 1 or 7/3) were prepared by modified Pechini route using ethylene glycol solutions of metal salts. Detailed characterization of their real structure and surface properties by X-ray diffraction on synchrotron radiation with the full-profile Rietveld analysis, high resolution electron microscopy with elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a high homogeneity of cations distribution in nanodomains resulting in stabilization of disordered cubic phase. This provides a high dispersion of NiO loaded on these mixed oxides by wet impregnation, a high reactivity and mobility of oxygen in these catalysts and strong interaction of Ni with support in the reduced state. This helps to achieve a high activity and coking stability of developed catalysts in CH4 dry reforming in feeds with CH4 concentration up to 15% and CH4/CO2 ratio =1.
