4. SiO Observations of the NGC 1333 IRAS 2A Protostellar Jet

Abstract

We present 86.8 GHz SiO J=2-1 observations of the molecular outflow from the protostellar source NGC 1333 IRAS 2A. Silicon monoxide is a sensitive tracer of shocks in molecular gas, and the emission clearly traces terminal bowshocks at the ends of the outflow lobes, as well as emission knots and a source coincident with the protostar. Our three-field mosaic from the BIMA interferometer covers the entire outflow length, including both lobes. The most prominent emission feature, the eastern bowshock, shows SiO at the leading edge, clearly displaced from the maximum seen in CO. This is in contrast to recent observations by Chandler & Richer (2001) of the HH 211 jet, where SiO traced primarily internal working surfaces and was less extended than the CO. Our results are consistent with prompt entrainment at the leading edge of the IRAS 2A bowshocks., Comment: 4 Pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We have used 3-D smoothed particle hydrodynamical simulations to study the basic properties of the outflow that is created by a protostellar jet in a dense molecular cloud. The dynamics of the jet/cloud interaction is strongly affected by the cooling in the shocked gas behind the bow shock at the head of the jet. We show that this cooling is very rapid, with the cooling distance of the gas much less than the jet radius. Thus, although ambient gas is initially driven away from the jet axis by the high thermal pressure odf the post-shock gas, rapid cooling reduces the pressure and the outflow subsequently evolves in a momentum-conserving snowplow fashion. The velocity of the ambient gas is high in the vicinity of the jet head, but decreases rapidly as more material is swept up. Thus, this type of outflow produces extremely high velocity clumps of post shock gas which resemble the features seen in outflows. We have investigated the transfer of momentum from the jet to the ambient medium as a function of the jet parameters. We show that a low Mach number (<6) jet slows down rapidly because it entrains ambient material along its sides. On the other hand, the beam of a high Mach number jet is separated from the ambient gas by a low density cocoon of post-shock gas, and this jet transfers momentum to the ambient medium principally at the bow-shock. Abstract

Soft gamma ray repeaters appear to be a new class of neutron stars. While a counterpart to SGR 0525-66 was detected uniquely in the X-ray band, SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 have unusual stellar counterparts whose spectra peak in the infrared. The infrared spectra appear to contain several components: the photospheric emission from stars dominates at shorter wavelengths; a bright point source dominates at 25 micrometers, and an extended source dominates at 60 micrometers. The longer wavelength spectra are inconsistent with mono-energetic synchrotron and black body radiation models. Recent millimeter, submillimeter and infrared observations are reviewed. A preliminary analysis of the higher resolution infrared spectra of SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 is outlined. These confirm previous observations suggesting that SGR1806-20 has an outflow and that the stars comprising the counterpart to SGR 1900+14 have very similar spectra.

Abstract

The rhizosphere-associated bacterium Serratia plymuthica HRO-C48 is not only able to suppress symptoms caused by soil-borne pathogens but is also able to stimulate growth of plants. Detailed knowledge about the underlying mechanisms and regulation are crucial for the application in biocontrol strategies. To analyse the influence of N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-mediated communication on the biocontrol activity, the AHL-degrading lactonase AiiA was heterologously expressed in the strain, resulting in abolished AHL production. The comparative analysis of the wild type and AHL negative mutants led to the identification of new AHL-regulated phenotypes. In the pathosystem Verticillium dahliae-oilseed rape, the essential role of AHL-mediated signaling for disease suppression was demonstrated. In vitro, the regulatory function of AHLs in the synthesis of the plant growth hormone indole-3-acetic acid is shown for the first time. Additionally, swimming motility was found to be negatively AHL regulated. In contrast, production of extracellular hydrolytic enzymes is shown to be positively AHL-regulated. HRO-C48 emits a broad spectrum of volatile organic compounds that are involved in antifungal activity and, interestingly, whose relative abundances are influenced by quorum sensing (QS). This study shows that QS is crucial for biocontrol activity of S. plymuthica and discusses the impact for the application of the strain as a biocontrol agent
