Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure, to appear in General Relativity and Gravitation

Abstract

We describe the simulated data sample for the "Photometric LSST Astronomical Time Series Classification Challenge" (PLAsTiCC), a publicly available challenge to classify transient and variable events that will be observed by the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), a new facility expected to start in the early 2020s. The challenge was hosted by Kaggle, ran from 2018 September 28 to 2018 December 17, and included 1,094 teams competing for prizes. Here we provide details of the 18 transient and variable source models, which were not revealed until after the challenge, and release the model libraries at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2612896. We describe the LSST Operations Simulator used to predict realistic observing conditions, and we describe the publicly available SNANA simulation code used to transform the models into observed fluxes and uncertainties in the LSST passbands (ugrizy). Although PLAsTiCC has finished, the publicly available models and simulation tools are being used within the astronomy community to further improve classification, and to study contamination in photometrically identified samples of type Ia supernova used to measure properties of dark energy. Our simulation framework will continue serving as a platform to improve the PLAsTiCC models, and to develop new models.

Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has two scientific objectives of cosmological focus: to probe the expansion rate of the universe, and to understand stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and their implications for early universe and particle physics, from the MeV to the Planck scale. However, the range of potential cosmological applications of gravitational-wave observations extends well beyond these two objectives. This publication presents a summary of the state of the art in LISA cosmology, theory and methods, and identifies new opportunities to use gravitational-wave observations by LISA to probe the universe.

Abstract

We discuss the signature of a peculiar constellation of very massive stars at a projected distance of 2-3 pc around R136a. We discuss various scenarios for its possible origin, such as independent clusters, triggered star formation, supernovae, and ejections via dynamical interactions. 7. The Velocity Distribution of Isolated Radio Pulsars

Abstract

(Abridged) We infer the velocity distribution of radio pulsars by modelling their birth, evolution, and detection in large-scale 0.4 GHz pulsar surveys, and by comparing model distributions of measurable pulsar properties with survey data using a likelihood function. We test models that characterize a population's birth rate, luminosity, shutoff of radio emission, birth locations, and birth velocities. We infer that the radio beam luminosity (i) is comparable to the energy flux of relativistic particles in models for spin-driven magnetospheres, signifying that radio emission losses reach nearly 100% for the oldest pulsars; and (ii) scales approximately as sqrt(Edot) which, in magnetosphere models, is proportional to the voltage drop available for acceleration of particles. We find that a two-component velocity distribution with characteristic velocities of 90 km/s and 500 km/s is greatly preferred to any one-component distribution. We explore some consequences of the preferred birth velocity distribution: (i) roughly 50% of pulsars in the solar neighborhood will escape the Galaxy, while ~15% have velocities greater than 1000 km/s; (ii) an important low-velocity population exists that increases the fraction of neutron stars retained by globular clusters and is consistent with the number of old objects that accrete from the interstellar medium; (iii) under standard assumptions for supernova remnant expansion and pulsar spin-down, ~10% of pulsars younger than 20 kyr will appear to lie outside of their host remnants. Finally, we comment on the ramifications of our birth velocity distribution for binary survival and the population of inspiraling binary neutron stars relevant to some GRB models and potential sources for LIGO., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, ApJ (in press). 8. Truncation of the Binary Distribution Function in Globular Cluster Formation

Abstract

We investigate a population of primordial binaries during the initial stage of evolution of a star cluster. For our calculations we assume that equal mass stars form rapidly in a tidally truncated gas cloud, that $\sim10$\% of the stars are in binaries and that the resulting star cluster undergoes an epoch of violent relaxation. We study the collisional interaction of the binaries and single stars, in particular, the ionization of the binaries and the energy exchange between binaries and single stars. We find that for large $N$ systems ($N > 10^3$) even the most violent beginning leaves the binary distribution function largely intact. Hence, the binding energy originally tied up in the cloud's protostellar pairs is preserved during the relaxation process and the binaries are available to interact at later times within the virialized cluster., Comment: 37 pages, LaTeX, 12 compressed postscript figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

9. Polarized Scattering in the Vicinty of Galaxies

Abstract

Some bright cD galaxies in cluster cooling flows have Thomson optical depths exceeding 0.01. A few percent of their luminosity is scattered and appears as diffuse polarized emission. We calculate the scattering process for different geometric combinations of luminosity sources and scattering media. We apply our results to galaxies, with and without active nuclei, immersed in cooling flows. We model observations of NGC 1275 and M87 (without active nuclei) in the presence of sky and galactic background fluxes which hinder the measurement of the scattered light at optical wavelengths. Current instruments are unable to detect the scattered light from such objects. However, when a galaxy has an active nucleus of roughly the same luminosity as the remainder of the galaxy in V, both the total and polarized scattered intensity should observable on large scales (5--30kpc), meaning intensity levels greater than 1% of the background level. For typical AGN and galaxy spectral distributions, the scattering is most easily detected at short (U) wavelengths. We point out that a number of such cases will occur. We show that the radiation pattern from the central nuclear region can be mapped using the scattering. 11. Plesio-geostrophy for Earth's outer core: Recent advances

Abstract

The main tools by which we can study the dynamics of Earth’s fluid core are direct numerical simulations (DNS). In spite of their success, their high computational cost prevents DNS from reaching Earth-like parameters regimes.Previous studies support the idea that the vast majority of the kinetic energy in the core is contained in columnar, vertically invariant structures. Columnar flow models capitalise on this observation and transform the original, 3D governing equations in a simplified, 2D set. These models have proven their potential in simulating the dynamics of Earth’s fluid core in extreme parameter regimes. However, current approaches are not capable of treating the magnetic field within the same 2D framework.Plesio-geostrophy (PG) was developed to overcome this limitation. Our PG model describes fluid flows, magnetic field and temperature via 2D variables. We tested our novel PG methodology on a set of linear problems of relevance to the dynamics of Earth’s fluid core: inertial and magneto-hydrodynamics waves propagation, and onset of thermal convection. All diffusivities are taken into account. The effect of viscous boundary layers is parameterised via a novel, fully spectral numerical methodology that does not require special treatments of the critical latitudes. We successfully benchmarked the PG model results against both 3D and other columnar flow models and calculated solutions at geophysically relevant parameter regimes.

Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

21. Vagus nerve stimulation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: 48 month safety and efficacy

Abstract

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disease with significant remaining unmet medical needs for better treatments. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) to activate the inflammatory reflex (cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway) repre sents a novel experimental therapy for RA.1 Previously, we reported that inflam matory reflex activation by VNS reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine production and improved disease activity in a 17-patient rheumatoid arthritis (RA) proof-of concept study using a reprogrammed epilepsy stimulator2 ; clinical improvement was sustained for 24 months without untoward safety signals.3 Here we report the 48 months results from this long-term observational study. Objectives: Determine the long-term safety and efficacy of VNS for the treat ment of RA Methods: In the primary study, a VNS device was implanted into 17 RA patients, mostly with insufficient response to multiple conventional and biologic DMARDs, on stable background of methotrexate (≤25mg weekly) therapy2 . The device electrically stimulated the vagus nerve, 1- 4min/day, over a 12-week open label period. On completion, subjects were offered to enroll into a follow-up study, where the study physicians were given flexibility to alter VNS dosing parameters and/or to add a biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) to the treatment regimen to induce disease remission. Clinical disease activity meas ures and safety were accessed over 4 years. Results: All patients electively continued VNS treatment in the long-term follow-up study, 4 subjects withdrew prior to month 48. Reasons for discontinuation were withdrawal of consent (N=3) and adverse event due to device discomfort (N=1). At the start of the follow-up study, the mean DAS28-CRP, CDAI and HAQ-DI were significantly reduced compared to the pre-implant baseline (mean difference± SD: DAS28-CRP=-1.60± 1.13, p

23. The Velocity Distribution of Isolated Radio Pulsars

Abstract

We infer the velocity distribution of radio pulsars based on large-scale 0.4 GHz pulsar surveys. We do so by modelling evolution of the locations, velocities, spins, and radio luminosities of pulsars; calculating pulsed flux according to a beaming model and random orientation angles of spin and beam; applying selection effects of pulsar surveys; and comparing model distributions of measurable pulsar properties with survey data using a likelihood function. The surveys analyzed have well-defined characteristics and cover approx. 95% of the sky. We maximize the likelihood in a 6-dimensional space of observables P, dot-P, DM, absolute value of b, mu, F (period, period derivative, dispersion measure, Galactic latitude, proper motion, and flux density). The models we test are described by 12 parameters that characterize a population's birth rate, luminosity, shutoff of radio emission, birth locations, and birth velocities. We infer that the radio beam luminosity (i) is comparable to the energy flux of relativistic particles in models for spin-driven magnetospheres, signifying that radio emission losses reach nearly 100% for the oldest pulsars; and (ii) scales approximately as E(exp 1/2) which, in magnetosphere models, is proportional to the voltage drop available for acceleration of particles. We find that a two-component velocity distribution with characteristic velocities of 90 km/ s and 500 km/ s is greatly preferred to any one-component distribution; this preference is largely immune to variations in other population parameters, such as the luminosity or distance scale, or the assumed spin-down law. We explore some consequences of the preferred birth velocity distribution: (1) roughly 50% of pulsars in the solar neighborhood will escape the Galaxy, while approx. 15% have velocities greater than 1000 km/ s (2) observational bias against high velocity pulsars is relatively unimportant for surveys that reach high Galactic absolute value of z distances, but is severe for spatially bounded surveys; (3) an important low-velocity population exists that increases the fraction of neutron stars retained by globular clusters and is consistent with the number of old objects that accrete from the interstellar medium; (4) under standard assumptions for supernova remnant expansion and pulsar spin-down, approx. 10% of pulsars younger than 20 kyr will appear to lie outside of their host remnants. Finally, we comment on the ramifications of our birth velocity distribution for binary survival and the population of inspiraling binary neutron stars relevant to some GRB models and potential sources for LIGO.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a debilitating chronic disease with an unmet need for additional therapeutic approaches. Activating neuro-immune reflex pathways by stimulation of the vagus nerve (VNS) could represent a novel means of treating RA [1] and other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Last year we reported a 12-week proof-of-concept study using a VNS device, approved for drug-resistant epilepsy, showing reduction in the DAS28-CRP clinical disease activity score, with concomitant reductions in TNF and IL-6 levels [2]. Objectives: To understand the long term safety and efficacy of this novel treatment approach, we followed the patients in a 24 months long-term extension study and report on the safety and clinical efficacy data. Methods: VNS devices were implanted into 17 RA patients, mostly with insufficient response to multiple conventional and biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), on stable background of methotrexate (£25 mg weekly) therapy. The devices electrically stimulated the vagus nerve, 1–4 min/day, over a 12 week open label period. On completion, subjects were offered to enroll into a follow-up study, where the study physicians were given flexibility to alter VNS dosing parameters and/or to add a biologic DMARD to the treatment regimen. DAS28-CRP and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI) were collected over 2 years. Results: All subjects electively continued on VNS treatment through 24 months of the long term follow-up study. Biologic DMARDs were started in 1 and restarted in 8 of 17 subjects ; of these, 4 were non-responders to VNS, and 5 had stable improvement but had not yet achieved disease remission on VNS alone (table 1). Abstract

The data presented here demonstrate that VNS in subjects with RA is associated with a substantial reduction in disease activity that is sustained for 24 months without untoward safety signals. Further, the data suggest that biological DMARDs may be initiated safely in combination with VNS treatment, though this requires validation in larger cohorts. These results support additional development of VNS devices as an alternative therapeutic approach for RA treatment, which potentially can safely be combined with biologic DMARDs.

Abstract

Researchers survey shock solutions of a partially ionized gas with a magnetic field. The gas is modeled by interacting neutral, ion, electron and charged grain components. They employ a small neutral-ion chemical network to follow the dissociation and ionization of the major species. Cooling by molecular hydrogen (rotational, vibrational and dissociation), grains and dipole molecules is included. There are three basic types of solutions (C, C asterisk, and J) and some more complicated flows involving combinations of the basic types. The initial preshock conditions cover hydrogen nuclei densities of 1 less than n less than 10(exp 10) cm(-3) and shock velocities of 5 less than v(sub s) less than 60 km/s. The magnetic field is varied over 5 decades and the sensitivity of the results to grain parameters, UV and cosmic ray fluxes is ascertained. The parameter space is quite complicated, but there exist some simple divisions. When the initial ionization fraction is small (chi sub i less than 10(-5)), there is a sharp transition between fully C solutions at low velocity and strong J solutions at high velocity. When the initial ionization fraction is larger, C asterisk and/or very weak J shocks are present at low velocities in addition to the C solutions. The flow again changes to strong J shocks at high velocities. When the ionization fraction is large and the flow is only slightly greater than the bulk Alfven velocity, there is a complicated mixture of C, C asterisk and J solutions.

30. An isolated, well-defined infrared cirrus cloud

Abstract

High spatial resolution H I measurements of a high-latitude FIR cirrus cloud (l = 9 deg, b = 51 deg) were obtained with the Arecibo 310 m telescope. The cloud is well isolated spatially and has a velocity well-separated from other H I clouds, providing an ideal laboratory for studying diffuse interstellar clouds. The Iv(100)/N(H) and Iv(60)/Iv(100) ratios are consistent with the Draine and Anderson model which includes a distribution of grain sizes down to 3 A. The small grains undergo transient heating and affect the 60 micron FIR continuum emission. Current models, however, underpredict Iv(12)/Iv(100) and Iv(25)/Iv(100) by more than a factor of 2. The effects small grains have on the thermal equilibrium of diffuse interstellar clouds are discussed.

Method: Fifty-two patients with established RA initiated adalimumab treatment and had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and radiography performed at weeks 0, 26, and 52. Serum samples were analysed using MBDA score assays and associations between clinical measures, MBDA score, and imaging findings were investigated. Results: The MBDA score correlated significantly with MRI synovitis (rho = 0.65, p < 0.001), MRI bone marrow oedema (rho = 0.36, p = 0.044), and US power Doppler (PD) score at week 26 (rho = 0.35, p = 0.039) but not at week 0 or week 52. In the 15 patients who had achieved a Disease Activity Score based on C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP) < 2.6 at week 26, MRI and/or US detected subclinical inflammation and 13 (87%) had a moderate/high MBDA score. For the cohort with available data, none of the four patients in MBDA remission (score ≤ 25) at week 26 had progression of imaging damage from baseline to week 52 whereas progression was observed in three out of nine (33%) and seven out of 21 (33%) patients with moderate (30–44) and high (> 44) MBDA scores, respectively. Conclusions: In this cohort, the MBDA score correlated poorly with MRI/US inflammation. However, the MBDA score and MRI/US were generally concordant in showing signs of inflammation in most patients in clinical remission during anti-tumour necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapy. MBDA scores were elevated in all patients with structural damage progression.
