Abstract

High mass X-ray binaries are among the brightest X-ray sources in the Milky Way, as well as in nearby Galaxies. Thanks to their highly variable emissions and complex phenomenology, they have attracted the interest of the high energy astrophysical community since the dawn of X-ray Astronomy. In more recent years, they have challenged our comprehension of physical processes in many more energy bands, ranging from the infrared to very high energies. In this review, we provide a broad but concise summary of the physical processes dominating the emission from high mass X-ray binaries across virtually the whole electromagnetic spectrum. These comprise the interaction of stellar winds with the high gravitational and magnetic fields of compact objects, the behaviour of matter under extreme magnetic and gravity conditions, and the perturbation of the massive star evolutionary processes by presence in a binary system. We highlight the role of the INTEGRAL mission in the discovery of many of the most interesting objects in the high mass X-ray binary class and its contribution in reviving the interest for these sources over the past two decades. We show how the INTEGRAL discoveries have not only contributed to significantly increase the number of high mass X-ray binaries known, thus advancing our understanding of the population as a whole, but also have opened new windows of investigation that stimulated the multi-wavelength approach nowadays common in most astrophysical research fields. We conclude the review by providing an overview of future facilities being planned from the X-ray to the very high energy domain that will hopefully help us in finding an answer to the many questions left open after more than 18 years of INTEGRAL scientific observations., Comment: 61 pages, 22 figures, 1 table, will be published in New Astronomy Reviews

Abstract

Among all the high-energy environments of our Galaxy, the Galactic Center (GC) region is definitely the richest. It harbors a large amount of non-thermal emitters, including the closest supermassive black hole, dense molecular clouds, regions with strong star forming activity, multiple supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae, arc-like radio structures, as well as the base of what may be large-scale Galactic outflows, possibly related to the Fermi Bubbles. It also contains a strong diffuse TeV gamma-ray emission along the Galactic ridge, with a disputed origin, including the presence of a possible Pevatron, unresolved sources, and an increased relevance of the diffuse sea of cosmic rays. This very rich region will be one of the key targets for the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Here we review the CTA science case for the study of the GC region, and present the planned survey strategy. Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. 4. Hour time-scale QPOs in the X-ray and radio emission of LS I +61$^{\circ}$303

Abstract

LS I +61$^{\circ}$303 is an X-ray binary with a radio outburst every ~27 days. Previous studies of the stellar system revealed radio microflares superimposed on the large radio outburst. We present here new radio observations of LS I +61$^{\circ}$303 at 2.2 GHz with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). Using various timing analysis methods we find significant Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) of 55 minutes stable over the duration of 4 days. We also use archival data obtained from the Suzaku satellite at X-ray wavelengths. We report here for the first time significant X-ray QPOs of about 2 hours present over the time span of 21 hours. We compare our results with the previously reported QPO observations and we conclude that the QPOs seem to be associated with the radio outburst, independent of the amplitude of the outburst. Finally, the different QPO time-scales are discussed in the context of magnetic reconnection.

Abstract

We present spectral and timing analysis of NuSTAR observations of the accreting X-ray pulsar 2RXP J130159.6-635806. The source was serendipitously observed during a campaign focused on the gamma-ray binary PSR B1259-63 and was later targeted for a dedicated observation. The spectrum has a typical shape for accreting X-ray pulsars, consisting of a simple power law with an exponential cutoff starting at ~7 keV with a folding energy of E_fold=~18 keV. There is also an indication of the presence of a 6.4 keV iron line in the spectrum at the ~3 sigma significance level. NuSTAR measurements of the pulsation period reveal that the pulsar has undergone a strong and steady spin-up for the last 20 years. The pulsed fraction is estimated to be ~80%, and is constant with energy up to 40 keV. The power density spectrum shows a break towards higher frequencies relative to the current spin period. This, together with steady persistent luminosity, points to a long-term mass accretion rate high enough to bring the pulsar out of spin equilibrium., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

To investigate the possible cooling of the corona by soft X-rays bursts, we have studied 114 bursts embedded in the known X-ray evolution of 4U 1636-536. We have grouped these bursts according to the ratio of the flux in the 1.5--12 keV band with respect to that in the 15--50 keV band, as monitored by RXTE/ASM and Swift/BAT, respectively. We have detected a shortage at hard X-rays while bursting. This provides hints for a corona cooling process driven by soft X-rays fed by the bursts that occurred on the surface of neutron star. The flux shortage at 30--50 keV has a time lag of 2.4$\pm$1.5 seconds with respect to that at 2--10 keV, which is comparable to that of 0.7$\pm$0.5 seconds reported in bursts of IGR 17473-2721. Abstract

A rare group of high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) are known that also exhibit MeV, GeV, and/or TeV emission ("gamma-ray binaries"). Expanding the sample of gamma-ray binaries and identifying unknown Fermi sources are currently of great interest to the community. Based upon their positional coincidence with the unidentified Fermi sources 1FGL J1127.7-6244c and 1FGL J1808.5-1954c, the Be stars HD 99771 and HD 165783 have been proposed as gamma-ray binary candidates. During Fermi Cycle 4, we have performed multiwavelength observations of these sources using XMM-Newton and the CTIO 1.5m telescope. We do not confirm high energy emission from the Be stars. 10. Monitoring the Black Hole Binary GRS 1758-258 with INTEGRAL and RXTE

Abstract

The microquasar GRS 1758-258 is one of only three persistent black hole binaries that spend most of their time in the hard spectral state, the other two being Cyg X-l and 1E 1741.7-2942. It therefore provides the rare opportunity for an extensive long term study of this important black hole state which is associated with strong variability and radio jet emission. INTEGRAL has been monitoring the source since the first Galactic Center Deep Exposure season in spring 2003 during two 2-3 months long Galactic Center viewing epochs each year, amounting to 11 epochs including spring of 2008. With the exception of the last epoch quasi-simultaneous RXTE monitoring observations are available as well. Here we present an analysis of the epoch averaged broad band spectra which display considerable long term variability, most notably the occurrence of two soft/off states, extreme examples for the hysteretic behavior of black hole binaries. The hard source spectrum and long exposures allow us to extend the analysis for several epochs to approximately 800 keV using PICsIT data and address the question of the presence of a non-thermal Comptonization component.

Astronomy has been very important in Ireland since ancient times. In the Victorian era, the country had not only the largest reflector in the world, but also the largest refractor. Modern astronomical research is concentrated in various Irish universities as well as the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Astronomy is very popular among the public at large, and also as a means of promoting graduate uptake in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

18. Observational and theoretical study of the point sources of very high energy gamma-ray emission

Abstract

The study of the sky using the most energetic photons plays a crucial role in detecting and exploring high-energy phenomena in the Universe. Observations conducted over recent years with new ground-based and space-borne gamma-ray instruments reveal that the universe is full of extreme accelerators, i.e., objects with surprisingly high efficiency for acceleration of electrons. In particular such an efficient acceleration is observed in gamma-ray-loud binary (GRLB) systems. GRLBs are a newly identified class of X-ray binaries in which interaction of an outflow from the compact object with the wind and radiation emitted by a companion star leads to the production of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission. Only five such systems have been firmly detected as persistent or regularly variable TeV gamma-ray emitters. All GRLBs detected in the TeV energy range contain a hot, young star and exhibit variable or periodic emission at multiple wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum. Details of the physical mechanism of the high-energy activity of GRLBs are not clear yet. Broad multi-wavelength observations are crucial to reveal the characteristic energies of the relativistic wind and better understanding of the nature of these sources. It looks quite possible that all these systems can be understood within the “hidden pulsar” model, and the observed differences are due to the different sizes of the system. In my work, I concentrate on the X-ray and gamma-ray emission observed from gamma-ray binaries PSR B1259−63 and LS I +61◦ 303 with Suzaku, XMM-Newton, Swift, Chandra and Fermi observatories. In PSR B1259−63, the compact source is a young 48 ms radio pulsar orbiting Be-type star with period of 3.4 years. During my studies, I have been intensively involved in the analysis of the results of two multi-wavelength campaigns organized in 2010 and 2014 during the periastron passages in this system. 23. Study of high-energy emission from high mass X-ray binaries

Since their discovery, the study of High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) has revealed an extremely powerful and energetic environment that is capable of accelerating particles to Very High Energies (VHE). With the advent of more advanced gamma-ray astronomy technology in the last decade a small number of HMXBs have been detected at GeV and TeV energies which has led to the classification of gamma-ray binary systems. One of these systems, PSR B1259-63, has been intensively studied in the past decade to understand the origins of the off-set GeV flaring during orbital periastron. An analysis I have conducted of Fermi-LAT observations of the 2017 passage, along with comparison to previous observations, has led to new insight of the GeV flare origin where the energy is released from unshocked and weakly shocked electrons of the pulsar wind as a beaming effect in the direction of the observer. With current X-ray telescopes, resolving the multiple X-ray emission sources and high variability of HMXBs requires extremely long observations and even then, may not be resolvable. The Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU), currently in development, will be capable of significantly higher resolution observations on both the energy and time scale. Vela X-1 is an archetypical HMXB where the spectra exhibit many emission lines that vary during the orbital eclipse of the binary companion. X-IFU will have the ability to detect changes in the emission line profile and possibly discover new emission lines. I have simulated X-IFU observations of Vela X-1 with theoretical line profiles modelled with XSTAR. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will provide an order of magnitude greater sensitivity of the TeV observations of HMXBs. In my work I have studied the capability of CTA to detect variability from microquasars depending on their fluxes and observation exposure.

Abstract

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions.The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. 25. Transient phenomena in the high energy sky

Abstract

In this thesis I explore some of the brightest transient phenomena we observe in the highnenergy sky. I consider some of the observational difficulties we encounter in studying these highly variable sources, in particular the importance of the level of photon statistics, especially in the difficult region that sits between 10 and 100 GeV, where we have the overlap between the energy domain of space telescopes and the energy range more suited to ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. The specific sources I study here belong to various classes of gamma-ray emitters: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), compact binaries, and powerful flare events in the Sun's magnetosphere. The first chapter provides an introduction to the field of high energy gamma-ray astronomy. There, I cover the basic gamma-ray emission mechanisms and give an overview of the sources that I have investigated as well as a description of the telescopes and instruments involved in my gamma-ray observations of these sources. The second and third chapters discuss the work I have done together with colleagues in the H.E.S.S. Collaboration to enable the delivery of the first results from phase II of H.E.S.S. for two bright AGNs and the gamma-ray binary PSR B1259-63. The fourth chapter covers my work on analysing the gamma-ray emission from solar flares in order to put constraints on hadronic models of the are emission. The fifth chapter discusses the evidence for multiple components in the high energy spectrum of the blazar AGN called Mrk 501. The sixth chapter highlights the importance of the study of the cut-off region in bright gamma-ray sources detected by the Fermi- LAT, investigating also the possible improvements that will be brought about by the next generation of ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. Finally, the conclusions summarise my findings and explore future perspectives in the field.
