The investigation into the scattering of plane waves by a periodic array of parallel cylinders utilizes the method of cylindrical wave decomposition, thereby reducing the problem complexity to a series of linear algebraic equations. This methodology proves particularly efficacious when the diameter of cylinders is significantly less than the wavelength of incident wave, resulting in a rapid diminution of the solution coefficients as a function of azimuth numbers. Such a reductionist approach facilitates the computation of scattered radiation intensity in near field. Subsequent cross-validation with numerical results corroborates the theoretical findings, showcasing a qualitative concordance between the two. The well-known mathematical instrument for detection common roots for pairs of polynomials and multiple roots of polynomials are resultants and discriminants. For a pair of polynomials $f$ and $g$ their resultant $R(f,g)$ is a function of their coefficients. Zeros of resultant $R(f,g)$ correspond to the families of coefficients of $f$ and $g$ such that $f$ and $g$ have a common root. Herewith the calculation of this common root is a separate problem. The principal results on calculation of a unique common root of two polynomials and also about calculating a unique root of multiplicity 2 of a polynomial in terms of the first order partial derivatives of resultants and discriminants are given in the monograph by I.M. Gelfand, M.M. Kapranov, A.V. Zelevinsky [1, Ch. 3, Ch. 12]. A significant development of the ideas of this book in the direction of searching for formulas for multiple roots of polynomials is presented in the paper by I.A. Antipova, E.N. Mikhalkin, A.K. Tsikh [2]. The key result of this article is [2, Theorem 1] where the expression for a unique root of multiplicity $s \geq 3$ in terms of the first order partial derivatives of resultant of the polynomial and it's derivative of order $s-1$. In the present article the explicit formulas for higher derivatives of resultants of pairs of polynomials possessing common roots are obtained. On this basis a series of results that differ in ideas from [2, Theorem 1] linking higher derivatives of resultants and common multiple roots are proven. Subwavelength gratings, with period shorter than the incident wavelength, have garnered significant attention in the fields of photonics, optoelectronics, and image sensor technology. In this research, we delve into the scattering characteristics of these gratings by employing the 2-dimensional point dipole approximation. Additionally, we propose a version of perturbation theory that relies on Fourier decomposition to obtain analytical expressions for the near-field behavior. We validate our models using numerical techniques such as boundary and finite element analysis. Notably, we explore how parameters like the grating period and slit width affect field enhancements. We derive the Whitham modulation equations for the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation via a multiple scales expansion and averaging two conservation laws over one oscillation period of its periodic traveling wave solutions. We then use the Whitham modulation equations to study the transverse stability of the periodic traveling wave solutions. We find that all such solutions are linearly unstable, and we obtain an explicit expression for the growth rate of the most unstable wave numbers. We validate these predictions by linearizing the equation around its periodic solutions and solving the resulting eigenvalue problem numerically. Finally, we calculate the growth rate of the solitary waves analytically. We consider $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric ring-like arrays of optical waveguides with purely nonlinear gain and loss. Regardless of the value of the gain-loss coefficient, these systems are protected from spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking. If the nonhermitian part of the array matrix has cross-compensating structure, the total power in such a system remains bounded -- or even constant -- at all times. Microcapsules with liquid cores encapsulated by thin membranes have many applications in science, medicine and industry. In this paper, we design a suspension of microcapsules which flow and deform like red blood cells (RBCs), as a valuable tool to investigate microhaemodynamics. A reconfigurable and easy-to-assemble 3D nested glass capillary device is used to robustly fabricate water-oil-water double emulsions which are then converted into spherical microcapsules with hyperelastic membranes by cross-linking the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer coating the droplets. The resulting capsules are monodisperse to within 1% and can be made in a wide range of size and membrane thickness. We use osmosis to deflate by 36% initially spherical capsules of diameter 350 {\mu}m and a membrane thickness of 4% of their radius, in order to match the reduced volume of biconcave RBCs. We compare the propagation of initially spherical and deflated capsules under constant volumetric flow in cylindrical capillaries of different confinements. We find that only deflated capsules deform broadly similarly to RBCs over a similar range of capillary numbers (Ca) -- the ratio of viscous to elastic forces. Similarly to the RBCs, the microcapsules transition from a symmetric 'parachute' to an asymmetric 'slipper'-like shape as Ca increases within the physiological range, demonstrating intriguing confinement-dependent dynamics. In addition to biomimetic RBC properties, high-throughput fabrication of tunable ultra-soft microcapsules could be further functionalized and find applications in other areas of science and engineering, Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

We consider right and left formulations of the inverse scattering problem for the Zakharov-Shabat system and the corresponding integral Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equations. Both formulations are helpful for numerical solving of the inverse scattering problem, which we perform using the previously developed Toeplitz Inner Bordering (TIB) algorithm. First, we establish general relations between the right and left scattering coefficients. Here, along with the known results, we introduce a relation between the left and right norming coefficients for the N-soliton solution. Then we propose an auxiliary kernel of the left Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equations, which allows one to solve the right scattering problem numerically. We generalize the TIB algorithm, initially proposed in the left formulation, to the right scattering problem case with the obtained formulas. The test runs of the TIB algorithm illustrate our results reconstructing the various nonsymmetrical potentials from their right scattering data.

We show that tilted Weyl semimetals with a spatially varying tilt of the Weyl cones provide a platform for studying analogues to problems in anisotropic optics as well as curved spacetime. Considering particular tilting profiles, we numerically evaluate the time evolution of electronic wave packets and their current densities. We demonstrate that electron trajectories in such systems can be obtained from Fermat's principle in the presence of an inhomogeneous, anisotropic effective refractive index. On the other hand, we show how the electrons dynamics reveal gravitational features and use them to simulate gravitational lensing around a synthetic black hole. These results bridge optical and gravitational analogies in Weyl semimetals, suggesting novel pathways for experimental solid-state electron optics.

Synthetic horizons in models for quantum matter provide an alternative route to explore fundamental questions of modern gravitational theory. Here, we apply these concepts to the problem of emergence of thermal quantum states in the presence of a horizon, by studying ground-state thermalization due to instantaneous horizon creation in a gravitational setting and its condensed matter analogue. By a sudden quench to position-dependent hopping amplitudes in a one-dimensional lattice model, we establish the emergence of a thermal state accompanying the formation of a synthetic horizon. The resulting temperature for long chains is shown to be identical to the corresponding Unruh temperature, provided that the post-quench Hamiltonian matches the entanglement Hamiltonian of the pre-quench system. Based on detailed analysis of the outgoing radiation we formulate the conditions required for the synthetic horizon to behave as a purely thermal source, paving a way to explore this interplay of quantum-mechanical and gravitational aspects experimentally.

To simulate the dynamics of massless Dirac fermions in curved spacetimes with one, two, and three spatial dimensions we construct tight-binding Hamiltonians with spatially varying hoppings. These models represent tilted Weyl semimetals where the tilting varies with position, in a manner similar to the light cones near the horizon of a black hole. We illustrate the gravitational analogies in these models by numerically evaluating the propagation of wave packets on the lattice and then comparing them to the geodesics of the corresponding curved spacetime. We also show that the motion of electrons in these spatially varying systems can be understood through the conservation of energy and the quasi-conservation of quasimomentum. This picture is confirmed by calculations of the scattering matrix, which indicate an exponential suppression of any noncontinuous change in the quasimomentum. Finally, we show that horizons in the lattice models can be constructed also at finite energies using specially designed tilting profiles.

In the present work we compute numerical solutions of an integro-differential equation for traveling waves on the boundary of a $2$D blob of an ideal fluid in the presence of surface tension. We find that solutions with multiple lobes tend to approach Crapper capillary waves in the limit of many lobes. Solutions with a few lobes become elongated as they become more nonlinear. It is unclear whether there is a limiting solution for small number of lobes, and what are its properties. Solutions are found from solving a nonlinear pseudo--differential equation by means of the Newton-Conjugate Residual method. We investigate the transport of a solute past isolated sinks in a bounded domain when advection is dominant over diffusion, evaluating the effectiveness of homogenization approximations when sinks are distributed uniformly randomly in space. Corrections to such approximations can be non-local, non-smooth and non-Gaussian, depending on the physical parameters (a P\'eclet number Pe, assumed large, and a Damk\"ohler number Da) and the compactness of the sinks. In one spatial dimension, solute distributions develop a staircase structure for large Pe, with corrections being better described with credible intervals than with traditional moments. In two and three dimensions, solute distributions are near-singular at each sink (and regularized by sink size), but their moments can be smooth as a result of ensemble averaging over variable sink locations. We approximate corrections to a homogenization approximation using a moment-expansion method, replacing the Green's function by its free-space form, and test predictions against simulation. We show how, in two or three dimensions, the leading-order impact of disorder can be captured in a homogenization approximation for the ensemble mean concentration through a modification to Da that grows with diminishing sink size., Comment: 5 figures

We investigate the wave packet dynamics and eigenstate localization in recently proposed generalized lattice models whose low-energy dynamics mimics a quantum field theory in (1+1)D curved spacetime with the aim of creating systems analogous to black holes. We identify a critical slowdown of zero-energy wave packets in a family of 1D tight-binding models with power-law variation of the hopping parameter, indicating the presence of a horizon. Remarkably, wave packets with non-zero energies bounce back and reverse direction before reaching the horizon. We additionally observe a power-law localization of all eigenstates, each bordering a region of exponential suppression. These forbidden regions dictate the closest possible approach to the horizon of states with any given energy. These numerical findings are supported by a semiclassical description of the wave packet trajectories, which are shown to coincide with the geodesics expected for the effective metric emerging from the considered lattice models in the continuum limit., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We present a method for finding lower bounds on the global infima of integral variational problems, wherein $\int_\Omega f(x,u(x),\nabla u(x)){\rm d}x$ is minimized over functions $u\colon\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}^m$ satisfying given equality or inequality constraints. Each constraint may be imposed over $\Omega$ or its boundary, either pointwise or in an integral sense. These global minimizations are generally non-convex and intractable. We formulate a particular convex maximization, here called the pointwise dual relaxation (PDR), whose supremum is a lower bound on the infimum of the original problem. The PDR can be derived by dualizing and relaxing the original problem; its constraints are pointwise equalities or inequalities over finite-dimensional sets, rather than over infinite-dimensional function spaces. When the original minimization can be specified by polynomial functions of $(x,u,\nabla u)$, the PDR can be further relaxed by replacing pointwise inequalities with polynomial sum-of-squares (SOS) conditions. The resulting SOS program is computationally tractable when the dimensions $m,n$ and number of constraints are not too large. The framework presented here generalizes an approach of Valmorbida, Ahmadi, and Papachristodoulou (IEEE Trans. Automat. Contr., 61:1649--1654, 2016). We prove that the optimal lower bound given by the PDR is sharp for several classes of problems, whose special cases include leading eigenvalues of Sturm-Liouville problems and optimal constants of Poincar\'e inequalities. For these same classes, we prove that SOS relaxations of the PDR converge to the sharp lower bound as polynomial degrees are increased. Convergence of SOS computations in practice is illustrated for several examples.

We investigate the spectral properties of one-dimensional lattices with position-dependent hopping amplitudes and on-site potentials that are smooth bounded functions of position. We find an exact integral form for the density of states (DOS) in the limit of an infinite number of sites, which we derive using a mixed Bloch-Wannier basis consisting of piecewise Wannier functions. Next, we provide an exact solution for the inverse problem of constructing the position-dependence of hopping in a lattice model yielding a given DOS. We confirm analytic results by comparing them to numerics obtained by exact diagonalization for various incarnations of position-dependent hoppings and on-site potentials. Finally, we generalize the DOS integral form to multi-orbital tight-binding models with longer-range hoppings and in higher dimensions., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

We propose a class of lattice models realizable in a wide range of setups whose low-energy dynamics exactly reduces to Dirac fields subjected to (1+1)-dimensional gravitational backgrounds, including (anti-)de Sitter spacetime. Wave-packets propagating on the lattice exhibit an eternal slowdown for power-law position-dependent hopping integrals $t(x)\propto x^\gamma$ when $\gamma\geq 1$, signalling the formation of black hole event horizons. For $\gamma< 1$ instead the wave-packets behave radically different and bounce off the horizon. We show that the eternal slowdown relates to a zero-energy spectral singularity of the lattice model and that the semiclassical wave packets trajectories coincide with the geodesics on (1+1)D dilaton gravity, paving the way for new and experimentally feasible routes to mimic black hole horizons and realize (1+1)D spacetimes as they appear in certain gravity theories., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

In the events of peripheral dissociation of relativistic nuclei in the nuclear track emulsion, it is possible to study the emerging ensembles of He and H nuclei, including those from decays of unstable $^{8}$Be and $^{9}$B nuclei, as well as the Hoyle state. These extremely short-lived states are identified by invariant masses calculated from the angles in 2$\alpha$-pairs, 2$\alpha p$- and 3$\alpha$-triplets in the approximation of conservation of momentum per nucleon of the primary nucleus. In the same approach, it is possible to search for more complex states. This paper explores the correlation between the formation of $^{8}$Be nuclei and the multiplicity of accompanying $\alpha$-particles in the dissociation of relativistic $^{16}$O, $^{22}$Ne, $^{28}$Si, and $^{197}$Au nuclei. On the above basis, estimates of this correlation are presented for the unstable $^{9}$B nucleus and the Hoyle state. The enhancement in the $^{8}$Be contribution to dissociation with the $\alpha$-particle multiplicity has been found. Decays of $^{9}$B nuclei and Hoyle states follow the same trend.

The invariant mass method is used to identify the $^8$Be and $^9$B nuclei and Hoyle state formed in dissociation of relativistic nuclei in a nuclear track emulsion. It is shown that to identify these extremely short-lived states in the case of the isotopes $^9$Be, $^{10}$B, $^{10}$C, $^{11}$C, $^{12}$C, and $^{16}$O, it is sufficient to determine the invariant mass as a function of the angles in pairs and triples of He and H fragments in the approximation of the conservation of momentum per nucleon of the parent nucleus. According to the criteria established in this way, the contribution of these three unstable states was evaluated in the relativistic fragmentation of the $^{28}$Si and $^{197}$Au nuclei., Comment: To be published in the European Physical Journal A. We consider the Landau-Lifshitz equation for the spin torque oscillator - a uniaxial ferromagnet in an external magnetic field with polarised spin current driven through it. In the absence of the Gilbert damping, the equation turns out to be PT-symmetric. We interpret the PT-symmetry as a balance between gain and loss - and identify the gaining and losing modes. In the vicinity of the bifurcation point of a uniform static state of magnetisation, the PT-symmetric Landau-Lifshitz equation with a small dissipative perturbation reduces to a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a quadratic nonlinearity. The analysis of the Schr\"odinger dynamics demonstrates that the spin torque oscillator supports stable magnetic solitons. The PT near-symmetry is crucial for the soliton stability: the addition of a finite dissipative term to the Landau-Lifshitz equation destabilises all solitons that we have found., Comment: Physica D (2020) Article in Press. We show that minimal massive 3d gravity (MMG), as well as the topological massive gravity, are particular cases of a more general `minimal massive gravity' theory (with a single massive propagating mode) arising upon spontaneous breaking of a local symmetry in a Chern-Simons gravity based on a Hietarinta or Maxwell algebra.
