Abstract

Linearly correlated defects were introduced into top and bottom surface layers of melt-textured YBa2Cu3O7-delta bulk having irradiation modified percent thickness ranging from 13% to 5%. This was done to test the possibility of predictably enhancing the critical current density of a bulk material with a strong uncorrelated disorder. Minimal effects were observed near the irreversibility line when the irradiated thickness was less than 2% of the whole length. Vortex localization was noted in the higher range of temperature and magnetic field.

Abstract

Both sides of bulk melted textured YBCO were irradiated with 235 MeV Au ions. Two surface layers of columnar defects were developed since the thickness of the samples were greater than the ions' penetration range. Resulting temperature and field ranges exhibited improvements in critical current density and the reversible and irreversible regime boundary shifted towards higher temperatures.

Abstract

A study was conducted on the influence of intense proton beam irradiation on the properties of Josephson junctions and junction arrays. The Josephson devices were developed using state-of-the-art full-Nb technology, with the thicknesses and materials of common Josephson digital circuit designs. Radiation induced damages on the Josephson junction properties were not observed.

Abstract

High linear energy transfer (LET) radiation, such as heavy ions or neutrons, has an increased biological effectiveness compared to X rays for gene mutation, genomic instability, and carcinogenesis. In the traditional paradigm, mutations or chromosomal aberrations are causative of late effects. However, in recent years experimental evidence has demonstrated the important role of the description of the modification of gene expression by radiation in understanding the mechanisms of radiation action. In this report, approaches are discussed to the mathematical description of mRNA and protein expression kinetics following DNA damage. Several hypotheses for models of radiation modulation of protein expression are discussed including possible non-linear processes that evolve from the linear dose responses that follow the initial DNA damage produced by radiation.

Abstract

Protons and alpha particles of high linear energy transfer (LET) have shown an increased relative biological effectiveness (RBE) with respect to X/gamma rays for several cellular and molecular endpoints in different in vitro cell systems. To contribute to understanding the biochemical mechanisms involved in the increased effectiveness of high LET radiation, an extensive study has been designed. The present work reports the preliminary result of this study on two human tumoural cell lines, DLD1 and HCT116, (with different p53 status), which indicate that for these cell lines, p53 does not appear to take a part in the response to radiation induced DNA damage, suggesting an alternative p53-independent pathway and a cell biochemical mechanism dependent on the cell type.

Abstract

We studied high temperature superconducting devices created by means of local nanostructuring with high-energy heavy-ion lithography. Linear arrays of alternate nanostructured and as-grown YBa2Cu3O7-x film regions are patterned on the microscale. The density of the induced nanostructures is tuned in such a way to locally depress the superconducting properties until a functional electromagnetic decoupling between nanostructured and as-grown microzones is achieved in suitable regions of the (B,T) phase diagram. Pilot prototypes engineered for operating as magnetic field detectors in harsh cryogenic environment are characterized by electric transport and surface morphology analysis at microscale and nanoscale. Sensitivity, linearity range, and bandwidth limits of the pilot prototype are established from electrical transport characterization. The morphological analysis reveals the salient aspects of the surface modifications occurring with high-fluence heavy-ion lithography. Radiation annealing experiments with 3.5 MeV proton energy were performed to check out the reliability of the prototype operating in harsh environments. These measurements demonstrate the robustness of this approach aimed at creating dissipative microscale units that are sensitive to magnetic fields in a continuous dissipationless superconducting material.
