Even 100 years after its introduction by Louis de Broglie, the wave-nature of matter is often regarded as a mind-boggling phenomenon. To give an intuitive introduction to this field, we here discuss the diffraction of massive molecules through a single, double, and triple slit, as well as a nanomechanical grating. While the experiments are in good agreement with undergraduate textbook predictions, we also observe pronounced differences resulting from the molecules' mass and internal complexity. The molecules' polarizability causes an attractive van der Waals interaction with the slit walls, which can be modified by rotating the nanomechanical mask with respect to the molecular beam. Angular momentum plays a central role in a multitude of phenomena in quantum mechanics, recurring in every length scale from the microscopic interactions of light and matter to the macroscopic behavior of superfluids. Vortex beams, carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM), are now regularly generated with elementary particles such as photons and electrons, and harnessed for numerous applications including microscopy and communication. Untapped possibilities remain hidden in vortices of non-elementary particles, as their composite structure can lead to coupling of OAM with internal degrees of freedom. However, thus far, the creation of a vortex beam of a non-elementary particle has never been demonstrated experimentally. We present the first vortex beams of atoms and molecules, formed by diffracting supersonic beams of helium atoms and dimers, respectively, off binary masks made from transmission gratings. By achieving large particle coherence lengths and nanometric grating features, we observe a series of vortex rings corresponding to different OAM states in the accumulated images of particles impacting a detector. This method is general and can be applied to most atomic and molecular gases. Our results may open new frontiers in atomic physics, utilizing the additional degree of freedom of OAM to probe collisions and alter fundamental interactions.

We identify a number of crystalline structures with promising characteristics to serve as a detection medium for a novel Dark Matter (DM) detector with a low threshold energy. A detector of this kind can be specifically useful in application requiring the detection of nuclear recoils, such as in direct detection of low mass DM, coherent neutrino scattering and neutrons. We describe a broad band, high sensitivity optical setup designed and constructed for the purpose of this search and future investigations of specific crystals. We report on the fluorescent signals produced from exposure to low doses of neutrons and $\gamma$ rays and find potential targets in Quartz, Sapphire, LiF, CaF$_{2}$ and BaF$_{2}$. These crystals and specific signals will be the subject of further study to establish the various traits relevant for a full scale DM detector. In this paper we identify the most interesting signals that will be promoted to significantly more detailed studies, including their production mechanism.

The occurrence of biological homochirality is attributed to symmetry breaking mechanisms which are still debatable1. Studies of symmetry breaking require tools for monitoring the population ratios of individual chiral nano-objects, such as molecules, polymers or nanocrystals. Moreover, mapping their spatial distributions may elucidate on the symmetry breaking mechanism. Recently, researchers have utilized differential scattering or circular dichroism microscopy to identify chirality on individual plasmonic nanostructures and inorganic nanocrystals. However, these measurements are prone to optical system artifacts. While luminescence is preferred for detecting single particle chirality, the typical low optical activity of chromophores limits its applicability. Here, we report on handedness determination of single chiral lanthanide based nanocrystals, using circularly polarized luminescence, with total photon count of $2\times 10^4$. We also utilize a machine learning approach for correlative microscopy to determine and spatially map handedness of individual nanocrystals with high accuracy. Circular dichroism (CD), induced by chirality, is an important tool for manipulating light or for characterizing morphology of molecules, proteins, crystals and nano-structures. CD is manifested over a wide size-range, from molecules to crystals or large nanostructures. Being a weak phenomenon (small fraction of absorption), CD is routinely measured on macroscopic amount of matter in solution, crystals, or arrays of fabricated meta-particles. These measurements mask the sensitivity of CD to small structural variation in nano-objects. Recently, several groups reported on chiroptical effects in individual nanoscale objects: Some, using near-field microscopy, where the tip-object interaction requires consideration. Some, using dark field scattering on large objects, and others by monitoring the fluorescence of individual chiral molecules. Here, we report on the direct observation of CD in individual nano-objects by far field extinction microscopy. Matter-wave interferometry has become an essential tool in studies on the foundations of quantum physics and for precision measurements. Mechanical gratings have played an important role as coherent beamsplitters for atoms, molecules and clusters since the basic diffraction mechanism is the same for all particles. However, polarizable objects may experience van der Waals shifts when they pass the grating walls and the undesired dephasing may prevent interferometry with massive objects. Here we explore how to minimize this perturbation by reducing the thickness of the diffraction mask to its ultimate physical limit, i.e. the thickness of a single atom. We have fabricated diffraction masks in single-layer and bilayer graphene as well as in 1 nm thin carbonaceous biphenyl membrane. We identify conditions to transform an array of single layer graphene nanoribbons into a grating of carbon nanoscrolls. We show that all these ultra-thin nanomasks can be used for high-contrast quantum diffraction of massive molecules. They can be seen as a nanomechanical answer to the question debated by Bohr and Einstein whether a softly suspended double slit would destroy quantum interference. In agreement with Bohr's reasoning we show that quantum coherence prevails even in the limit of atomically thin gratings., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Optical control of nanoscale objects has recently developed into a thriving field of research with far-reaching promises for precision measurements, fundamental quantum physics and studies on single-particle thermodynamics. Here, we demonstrate the optical manipulation of silicon nanorods in high vacuum. Initially, we sculpture these particles into a silicon substrate with a tailored geometry to facilitate their launch into high vacuum by laser-induced mechanical cleavage. We manipulate and trace their center-of-mass and rotational motion through the interaction with an intense intra-cavity field. Our experiments show optical forces on nanorotors three times stronger than on silicon nanospheres of the same mass. The optical torque experienced by the spinning rods will enable cooling of the rotational motion and torsional opto-mechanics in a dissipation-free environment., Comment: 8 pages

We propose a new design for a multi-color, parallelized STED microscope, capable of multiple beam scanning. Our design is based on a common programmable diffracting optical element used to split, shape, and align both the excitation beams as well as the depletion beams, and a CCD camera to image florescence from all scanning beams simultaneously. Here we describe a prototype implementation of a two beam STED based on our novel design, which could easily be generalized to multi-color STED, with up to 100 parallel scanning beams given enough laser power, and high rate STED imaging with the use of a high-speed response multianode photomultiplier detector., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures

The observation of interference patterns in double-slit experiments with massive particles is generally regarded as the ultimate demonstration of the quantum nature of these objects. Such matter-wave interference has been observed for electrons, neutrons, atoms and molecules and it differs from classical wave-physics in that it can even be observed when single particles arrive at the detector one by one. The build-up of such patterns in experiments with electrons has been described as the "most beautiful experiment in physics". Here we show how a combination of nanofabrication and nanoimaging methods allows us to record the full two-dimensional build-up of quantum diffraction patterns in real-time for phthalocyanine molecules PcH2 and their tailored derivatives F24PcH2 with a mass of 1298 amu. A laser-controlled micro-evaporation source was used to produce a beam of molecules with the required intensity and coherence and the gratings were machined in 10 nm thick silicon nitride membranes to reduce the effect of van der Waals forces. Wide-field fluorescence microscopy was used to detect the position of each molecule with an accuracy of 10 nm and to reveal the build-up of a deterministic ensemble interference pattern from stochastically arriving and internally hot single molecules., Comment: Related video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDx8tu-iX8U
