4. Consistent truncations and applications of AdS/CFT : spindles, interfaces & S-folds

Abstract

The AdS/CFT correspondence provides a framework which unifies gravity, gauge theory and geometry. Since its introduction, this remarkable correspondence has provided us many interesting and yet somewhat surprising results. In this thesis, we have explored three aspects of the correspondence: (i) Consistent truncations, (ii) Wrapping branes on spindles, and (iii) Mass deformations of N = 4 SYM. The first part of this thesis is concerned with consistent truncations associated with wrapped brane configurations. We present constructions of consistent truncations of D=11 supergravity and Type IIA supergravity on a 6-dimensional manifold given by S⁴ twisted over a Riemann surface, and they are associated with M5- and NS5-branes wrapping over Riemann surfaces respectively. The resulting theories are both D=5, N=4 gauged supergravity theories coupled to three vector multiplets, but the precise details of the gauging of the two theories are different. In the second part of the thesis, we present a novel construction of supersymmetric AdS₃ solutions in D=11 supergravity, which are associated with wrapping M5-branes over four-dimensional orbifolds. In one case, the orbifold is a spindle fibred over another spindle, while in the other, it is a spindle fibred over a Riemann surface. We show that the central charges of the corresponding d=2 SCFTs calculated from the supergravity solutions agree with field theory computations. In the third part of the thesis, we study mass deformations of N=4 SYM theory that are spatially modulated in one spatial direction and preserve some supersymmetry. We focus on generalisations of N=1* theories and show that it is possible to preserve d=3 conformal symmetry associated with a co-dimension one interface. Holographic solutions are constructed using D=5 gravitational theories which arise from consistent truncations of SO(6) gauged supergravity. For mass deformations that preserve d=3 superconformal symmetry, we construct a rich set of Janus solutions which are supported by spatially dependent mass sources on either side of the interface. Limiting case of these solutions gives rise to novel RG interface solutions with N=4 SYM on one side of the interface and the Leigh-Strassler SCFT on the other. Another limiting case gives rise to S-fold solutions. Specifically, we construct new classes of AdS₄ x S¹ x S⁵ solutions of Type IIB string theory which have non-trivial SL(2Z) monodromy along the S¹ direction.

5. Fast and slow intraplate ruptures during the 19 October 2020 magnitude 7.6 Shumagin earthquake

Abstract

Strong tsunami excitation from slow rupture of shallow subduction zone faults is recognized as a key concern for tsunami hazard assessment. Three months after the 22 July 2020 magnitude 7.8 thrust earthquake struck the plate boundary below the Shumagin Islands, Alaska, a magnitude 7.6 aftershock ruptured with complex intraplate faulting. Despite the smaller size and predominantly strike-slip faulting mechanism inferred from seismic waves for the aftershock, it generated much larger tsunami waves than the mainshock. Here we show through detailed analysis of seismic, geodetic, and tsunami observations of the aftershock that the event implicated unprecedented source complexity, involving weakly tsunamigenic fast rupture of two intraplate faults located below and most likely above the plate boundary, along with induced strongly tsunamigenic slow thrust slip on a third fault near the shelf break likely striking nearly perpendicular to the trench. The thrust slip took over 5 min, giving no clear expression in seismic or geodetic observations while producing the sizeable far-field tsunami.

Abstract

Given a grayscale photograph, the colorization system estimates a visually plausible colorful image. Conventional methods often use semantics to colorize grayscale images. However, in these methods, only classification semantic information is embedded, resulting in semantic confusion and color bleeding in the final colorized image. To address these issues, we propose a fully automatic Saliency Map-guided Colorization with Generative Adversarial Network (SCGAN) framework. It jointly predicts the colorization and saliency map to minimize semantic confusion and color bleeding in the colorized image. Since the global features from pre-trained VGG-16-Gray network are embedded to the colorization encoder, the proposed SCGAN can be trained with much less data than state-of-the-art methods to achieve perceptually reasonable colorization. In addition, we propose a novel saliency map-based guidance method. Branches of the colorization decoder are used to predict the saliency map as a proxy target. Moreover, two hierarchical discriminators are utilized for the generated colorization and saliency map, respectively, in order to strengthen visual perception performance. The proposed system is evaluated on ImageNet validation set. 22. Exploring the Gender Difference in Relationships between Narcissism, Competitiveness, and Mental Health Problems among College Students

Abstract

Objective: The current research examined the gender difference in relationships in terms of overt and covert narcissism, hypercompetitiveness, personal development competitiveness, and mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, and stress symptoms among college students. Participants: 195 college students (mean age = 21.55 years) in Hong Kong. Method: Participants were invited to fill in standardized psychological instruments. Results: In all, 125 (62.1%) were females. The results revealed that males had higher levels of narcissism and competitiveness than females. Narcissism was associated with competitiveness in both genders. Covert narcissism was independently and positively related with depression, anxiety, and stress in both males and females. Hypercompetitiveness was independently and positively associated with mental health problems in females, but independent associations were not found in males. Conclusions: For the well-being of college students, those with covert narcissism and females with hypercompetitiveness should be monitored closely as they are more likely to have mental health problems.

Abstract

We are living in an age in which digitization will connect more and more physical assets with IT systems and where IoT endpoints will generate a wealth of valuable data. Companies, individual users, and organizations alike therefore have the need to control their own physical or non-physical assets and data sources. At the same time, they recognize the need for, and opportunity to, share access to such data and digitized physical assets. This paper sets out our technology vision for such sharing ecosystems, reports initial work in that direction, identifies challenges for realizing this vision, and seeks feedback and collaboration from the academic access-control community in that R\&D space.

26. Audit committee characteristics, trust and audit quality : evidence from Hong Kong

Abstract

This thesis comprises of two parts. Part One of the thesis denotes an archival modelling study that evaluates the relationships between effective audit committee characteristics (size, independence, financial expertise, meeting frequency, directorship, tenure and age of audit commit-tees) and perceived audit quality in Hong Kong. Part Two is a questionnaire survey study exploring the effects of external auditors’ trust in audit committee members on both their interactions and perceived audit quality in Hong Kong. In the archival modelling study, discretionary accruals estimated by the modified Jones model were employed in order to measure perceived audit quality. Fixed effect panel data regression with robust standard errors was used as primary analysis. On the basis of data obtained from the Hong Kong Hang Seng Composite Index between 2010 and 2015, the findings suggest that their financial expertise, size, tenure and age are important determinants of perceived audit quality. This result indicates that their expertise enables them to fulfil their oversight role competently, whereas their size provides them with sufficient resources to be able to perform their roles. Similarly, their length of tenure enables them to obtain more experience and knowledge of the operations of companies, while their age indicates that they may have less energy to perform their oversight role and have difficulties in keeping abreast of changing environment of companies. Thus, an audit committee with old members may reduce audit quality. Audit fees and choice of auditor are used as the measures of audit quality for the robustness checks. The results of robustness checks demonstrate that a large audit committee with financial expertise demands greater efforts from external auditors, as indicated in higher audit fees. However, audit commit-tee members’ directorships are found to be negatively associated with audit fees but positively related to the appointment of Big 4 auditors. In the questionnaire survey study, perceived audit quality is measured based on external auditors’ interactions with audit committee members. Semi-structured questionnaires were used in order to assess the levels of their trust in audit committee members and their interactions. Ordinary least square with robust standard errors, independent t-tests and thematic analysis were used in this study. According to the findings, the external auditors trust them because they have and display integrity, competence and goodwill. These findings also suggest that their trust in audit commit-tee members improve their interactions in terms of sharing information, devoting their time and efforts to an external audit and providing their comments on managers. Overall, both findings are congruent with agency theory and social interdependence theory. On the one hand, agency theory states that higher quality audit committees are associated with effective monitoring, which, in turn, helps to improve audit quality so that earnings management is constrained. On the other hand, social interdependence theory states that when two parties (external auditors and audit committee members, in this case) depend on one another, they will try to improve their interactions so that their common goals (high audit quality) can be achieved on the basis of trust. The findings are of potential interest to policy makers, professionals, boards of directors and audit firms, particularly on issues relating to audit quality and the mandating of corporate governance practices.

29. Students' Frequent Exposure to Bullying: Comparing between Low-Achieving Students of Macao and Taiwan in PISA 2015 Well-Being Study

Abstract

According to the findings of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 Well-being Study, Taiwan's school learning environment, in terms of teen bullying, is more harmonious than that of Macao's. This study seeks to identify pertinent risk and protective factors discriminating between the low-achieving students who are frequently bullied and those who are not. Respectively for Macao and Taiwan, personal and low-achieving-related student characteristics, alongside the potential risk and protective factors of teen bullying, are predictor variables in the multilevel logistic regression analyses. The findings show that "teacher unfairness" is a risk factor whereas "sense of school belonging" and "disciplinary climate" are protective factors of the victims who are frequently bullied. The significant effect size of the risk and protective factors found indicates that Macao can learn from Taiwan so as to scale down the prevalence of teen bullying in schools.

Abstract

Abstract Traditional carrier screening has been utilized for the detection of carriers of genetic disorders. Since a comprehensive assessment of the carrier frequencies of recessive conditions in the Southern Chinese population is not yet available, we performed a secondary analysis on the spectrum and carrier status for 315 genes causing autosomal recessive disorders in 1543 Southern Chinese individuals with next-generation sequencing data, 1116 with exome sequencing and 427 with genome sequencing data. Our data revealed that 1 in 2 people (47.8% of the population) was a carrier for one or more recessive conditions, and 1 in 12 individuals (8.30% of the population) was a carrier for treatable inherited conditions. In alignment with current American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) pan-ethnic carrier recommendations, 1 in 26 individuals were identified as carriers of cystic fibrosis, thalassemia, and spinal muscular atrophy in the Southern Chinese population. When the >1% expanded carrier screening rate recommendation by ACOG was used, 11 diseases were found to meet the criteria in the Southern Chinese population. Approximately 1 in 3 individuals (35.5% of the population) were carriers of these 11 conditions. If the 1 in 200 carrier frequency threshold is used, and additional seven genes would meet the criteria, and 2 in 5 individuals (38.7% of the population) would be detected as a carrier. This study provides a comprehensive catalogue of the carrier spectrum and frequency in the Southern Chinese population and can serve as a reference for careful evaluation of the conditions to be included in expanded carrier screening for Southern Chinese people.

Abstract

Driving a certain transition without including undesired transitions is an ubiquitous problem in quantum control and the implementation of quantum information processing. This problem gets the more challenging the weaker the desired transition couples to the control field, and the denser the system's spectrum is. With the explicit example of a trapped ion we show how temporally shaped driving helps to increase the fidelity of a gate operation beyond the regular spectral selection of resonantly driven transitions. We chose the explicit example of side-band transitions, since those couple more weakly to a control field than carrier transitions. Driving a sideband transition without carrier excitation thus allows us to test the limits of frequently employed control tools, and we discuss their potential and limitations., Comment: 20 pages

Background Aims Materials and Methods Results Discussion Conclusion Given that students from socio‐economically disadvantaged family backgrounds are more likely to suffer from low academic performance, there is an interest in identifying features of academic resilience, which may mitigate the relationship between disadvantaged socio‐economic status and academic performance.This study sought to combine machine learning and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) technique to identify key features of academic resilience in mathematics learning during COVID‐19.Based on PISA 2022 data in 79 countries/economies, the random forest model coupled with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) value technique not only uncovered the key features of academic resilience but also examined the contributions of each key feature.Findings indicated that 35 features were identified in the classification of academically resilient and non‐academically resilient students, which largely validated the previous academic resilient framework. Notably, gender differences were shown in the distribution of some key features. Research findings also indicated that resilient students tended to have a stable emotional state, high levels of self‐efficacy, low levels of truancy and positive future aspirations.This study has established a research paradigm essentially methodological in nature to bridge the gap between psychological theories and big data in the field of educational psychology.To sum up, our study shed light on the issues of education equity and quality from a global perspective in the times of the COVID‐19 pandemic. 42. Distributive interaction of algebraic effects

Abstract

While monadic effects are widespread in modern functional programming, the idea of formulating computational effects as algebraic theories seems a less familiar one to programmers. One appealing feature of such algebraic effects is the clear decoupling between specification and implementation (or in more model-theoretic terms, syntax versus semantics). With monads, this distinction is arguably less clear. But perhaps the most compelling reason for considering algebraic effects is the relative ease by which such effects can be combined. This point is clearly of much relevance to the semantics of programming languages since in much of modern software development, one often deals with multiple interacting effects. As a simple example, we may want a program that not only keeps track of some state across the computation (e.g. a parser consuming a string of text), but also account for the possibility of failure. But it is well known that there is more than one way to combine these state and exception effects, each corresponding to a different composition. Neither can be considered canonical, since both have their use cases. It turns out that under the lens of algebraic effects, both interactions can be understood in terms of straightforward amalgamations of the respective equational laws. Both of these constructions arise naturally from the categorical structure of Lawvere theories, a more abstract formulation of equational theories as categories. In this dissertation we seek to further the understanding of combining effects, especially from this more algebraic perspective. Of particular interest is a distributive tensor construction on Lawvere theories that does not seem to be very widely known. The distributive tensor plays a leading role in many examples of computational interest, and two such applications will be considered in some depth. Firstly, from the observation that various combinatorial search strategies are characterised by two equivalent formulations as bunch monadic types and as more structured theories of monoids, we give a number of correspondence results. Furthermore, it is also shown that the list monad transformer is exactly a distributive tensor from the theory of monoids. The second application considers in some detail a derivation of the geometrically convex monad, that is the combination of probabilistic and nondeterministic choice effects, called combined choice. As it is no easy task to capture the equational properties between probabilistic and nondeterministic choice, a technique is explored for reasoning about such equations visually by taking a geometric interpretation of the free models of combined choice, as convex polygons on a plane.
