Abstract Graphene field‐effect transistors (GFETs) are widely used in biosensing due to their excellent properties in biomolecular signal amplification, exhibiting great potential for high‐sensitivity and point‐of‐care testing in clinical diagnosis. However, difficulties in complicated fabrication steps are the main limitations for the further studies and applications of GFETs. In this study, a modular fabrication technique is introduced to construct microfluidic GFET biosensors within 3 independent steps. The low‐melting metal electrodes and intricate flow channels are incorporated to maintain the structural integrity of graphene and facilitate subsequent sensing operations. The as‐fabricated GFET biosensor demonstrates excellent long‐term stability, and performs effectively in various ion environments. It also exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting single‐stranded nucleic acids at a 10 fm concentration. Furthermore, when combined with the CRISPR/Cas12a system, it facilitates amplification‐free and rapid detection of nucleic acids at a concentration of 1 fm. Thus, it is believed that this modular‐fabricated microfluidic GFET may shed light on further development of FET‐based biosensors in various applications.

Si3N4 ceramics are promising wave-transparent materials with excellent mechanical and dielectric properties. Vat photopolymerization (VPP) three-dimensional (3D) printing provides a strategy for preparing ceramics with controllable complex structures. However, the difficulty in solidifying the slurry due to partial ultraviolet (UV) light absorption and the high refractive index of Si3N4 particles during the VPP process severely hinder the molding of Si3N4 ceramics. A higher laser power must be used to increase the curing depth, which generates large internal stresses and warps the samples. This study presents a method to solve the warpage problem during VPP-3D printing using tributyl citrate as a plasticizer. The plasticizer can weaken the force between polymer molecular chains and reduce the internal stress of the green body. Warpage decreases gradually with increasing tributyl citrate content, and the warpage decreases to 0% when the plasticizer content reaches 30 wt% at high laser powers from 600 to 750 mW. Samples with different layer thicknesses were printed, and the optimum thickness of 40 μm was obtained, at which the sintered Si3N4 samples possessed a unique combination of mechanical properties, including a bending strength of 338.29±12.08 MPa and a fracture toughness of 6.94±0.11 MPa·m1/2 for the loading direction perpendicular to the build surface and 5.37±0.99 MPa·m1/2 for the loading direction parallel to the build surface. The dielectric constant of all the samples is maintained in the range of 5.462–6.414. This work is expected to guide vat photopolymerization and the preparation of complex Si3N4 ceramic components.

As the cleanest energy source, hydrogen energy is regarded as the most promising fuel. Water electrolysis, as the primary means of hydrogen production, has constantly been the focus of attention in the energy conversion field. Developing eco-friendly, cheap, safe and efficient catalysts for electrochemical water splitting (EWS) is the key challenge. Herein, the intermetallic silicide alloy is first synthesized via a facile magnesiothermic reduction and employed as bifunctional electrocatalysts for EWS. Ferric-nickel silicide (denoted as FeNiSi) alloy is designed and shows a good electrocatalytic performance for EWS. The lattice distortions of FeNiSi enhance the electrocatalytic activity. Besides, the porous structure affords more active sites and improves the reaction kinetics. As a consequence, FeNiSi delivers an excellent performance with overpotential of 308 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 386 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at 10 mA·cm−2 in 1 M KOH. The stability structure of intermetallic silicide achieves an outstanding durability with an unchanged potential of 1.66 V for overall water splitting at 10 mA·cm−2 for 15 h. This work not only provides a facile method for the synthesis of intermetallic silicide with considerable porous structures, but also develops the potential of intermetallic silicide alloy as bifunctional electrocatalysts for EWS, which opens up a new avenue for the design and application of intermetallic silicide alloy.

Abstract Aim To construct a psychosocial intervention programme for women diagnosed with foetal anomalies based on their needs in China. Design A three round‐modified Delphi survey from September to November 2020. Methods In Round 1, based on literature review and qualitative interviews, a face‐to‐face meeting with eight taskforce members was conducted to generate the initial intervention indicators. In Round 2 and 3, 15 experts and three stakeholders (women undergoing termination of pregnancy for foetal anomalies) were invited by email to evaluate the importance of the indicators and built the final psychosocial intervention programme. Results The response rate for both two rounds is 100%. The experts' authority coefficient was 0.86. The Kendall W value of the two rounds ranged between 0.191 and 0.339. A needs‐based psychosocial intervention programme was established, including four periods (denial, confirmation, decision‐making and recovery), three needs‐based supports (information, social and acceptance commitment therapy) and 27 intervention indicators. The mean value of the importance of each index was 4.00–5.00. Further research is required to evaluate whether this programme is realistic and effective for the target audiences.

Low-altitude airspace is developing rapidly, but the utilization rate of airspace resources is low. Therefore, in order to solve the problem of the safe operation of the fusion of large UAVs and manned aircraft in the same airspace, this paper analyzes the theoretical calculation of the collision risk of the fusion operation of manned aircraft and UAVs at Feng Ming Airport in Zigong, verifying that while assessing the safety spacing of 10 km in the lateral direction, it further simulates the possibility of calculating the theoretical smaller safety spacing. The study will propose a new theory of error spacing safety margin and improve it according to the traditional Event collision risk model, combining the error spacing safety margin to establish an improved collision model more suitable for the fusion operation of manned and unmanned aircraft and reduce the redundancy of calculation. The error factors affecting manned and unmanned aircraft at Zigong Airport are analyzed, and theoretical calculations are analyzed by combining the actual data of Zigong Airport. Finally, the Monte Carlo simulation method is used to solve the error, substitute the calculation results, and simulate a section of the trajectory of the fusion operation for the reverse argument. The theoretical calculation results show that the collision risk from 10 km to 8 km satisfies the lateral target safety level (TSL) specified by ICAO under both traditional and improved models. The collision risk calculated by the improved model incorporating the error spacing safety margin is smaller, which enhances the safety of the model calculations. The results of the study can provide theoretical references for the fusion operation of manned and unmanned aircraft.

Context Zhishi Rhubarb Soup (ZRS) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula used in the clinic to treat acute cerebral infarction (ACI) for many years. However, the exact mechanism of the treatment remains unclear.Objective This study elucidates the multitarget mechanisms underlying the effects of ZRS on ACI using network pharmacology analysis and verify its effect by performing animal experiments.Materials and methods Using the network pharmacology approach, the multiple components, critical targets and potential mechanisms of ZRS against ACI were investigated. Six herbal names of ZRS and ‘acute cerebral infarction’ were used as keywords to search the relevant databases. In addition, we established the MCAO model to verify the results of network pharmacology enrichment analysis. ZRS (10 g crude drug/kg) was gavaged once per day for 7 consecutive days beginning 3 h after model establishment. After ZRS treatment, TTC staining, Western blot analysis, IHC and ELISA were conducted to further explore the mechanism of ZRS intervention in ACI.Results The network pharmacology approach identified 69 key targets, 10 core genes and 169 signalling pathways involved in the treatment of ACI with ZRS. In vivo experiment showed that ZRS treatment significantly reduced cerebral infarction volume (42.76%). It also reduced the expression level of AGE, RAGE and P65; and inhibited the expression of inflammatory MMP-9 and IFN-γ.Conclusions This study demonstrated that ZRS improved cerebral ischaemic injury by inhibiting neuroinflammation partly via the AGE-RAGE signalling pathway. It provides a theoretical basis for the clinical application of ZRS in the treatment of ACI.

With the rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicle technology and its increasing application across various fields, current airspace resources are insufficient for unmanned aerial vehicles’ needs. This paper, taking Zigong General Aviation Airport in Sichuan as a case study, explores the lateral safety spacing in a mixed operation mode of unmanned aerial vehicles and manned aircraft. Currently, there are no standardized regulations for the safe spacing of the fusion operation of unmanned and manned aircraft. Theoretical research is essential to provide a reference for actual operations. It introduces the UM-Event (unmanned and manned aircraft-event) collision risk model, an adaptation of the Event collision risk model, considering factors like communication, navigation, surveillance performance, human factors, collision avoidance equipment performance, and meteorology. Safety spacing was determined via simulation experiments and actual data analysis, adhering to the target safety level (TSL). Findings indicate that surveillance performance has a minor impact on safety spacing, while communication and navigation significantly influence it. The safety spacing, influenced solely by CNS (communication performance, navigation performance, surveillance performance) and combined factors, increased from 4.42 to 4.47 nautical miles. These results offer theoretical guidance for unmanned aerial vehicle safety in non-segregated airspace.

IntroductionThis study aimed to investigate the effect of muscle-derived stem cell (MDSC) exosomes with overexpressed miR-214 on the regeneration and repair of rat sciatic nerve after crush injury and its molecular mechanism.MethodsFirst, primary MDSCs, Schwann cells (SCs) and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons were isolated and cultured, and the characteristics of MDSCs-derived exosomes were identified by molecular biology and immunohistochemistry. NC mimics and miR-214 mimics were transfected to obtain exo-NC and exo-miR-214. An in vitro co-culture system was established to determine the effect of exo-miR-214 on nerve regeneration. The restoration of sciatic nerve function of rats by exo-miR-214 was evaluated by walking track analysis. Immunofluorescence for NF and S100 was used to detect the regeneration of axon and myelin sheath in injured nerve. The Starbase database was used to analyze the downstream target genes of miR-214. QRT-PCR and dual luciferase reporter assays were used to validate the miR-214 and PTEN interaction relationship. And the expression of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway-related proteins in sciatic nerve tissues were detected by western blot.ResultsThe above experiments showed that MDSCs-derived exosomes with overexpressed miR-214 was found to promote the proliferation and migration of SCs, increase the expression of neurotrophic factors, promote axon extension of DRG neurons and positively affect the recovery of nerve structure and function. In addition, PTEN was a target gene of miR-214. Exo-miR-214 can significantly inhibit the expression level of PTEN, increase the protein expression levels of p-JAK2 and p-STAT3 and the ratio of p-JAK2/JAK2 and p-STAT3/STAT3, also MDSCs-derived exosomes with overexpressed miR-214 can reduce the occurrence of denervated muscle atrophy.ConclusionIn summary, the MDSCs-derived exosomes with overexpressed miR-214 is involved in peripheral nerve regeneration and repair in rats after sciatic nerve crush injury to activate the JAK2/ STAT3 pathway by targeting PTEN.

This paper is concerned with event-triggered guaranteed-cost bipartite formation control of multi-agent systems with antagonistic interactions. In order to save the limited network communication bandwidth of multi-agent systems, event-triggered sampled-data transmission strategy is adopted. Event conditions are designed for both leader and followers to reduce the frequency of state transmission more effectively. According to the event-triggered sampled-data of the leader and followers, bipartite formation controllers are designed for followers. By using the event conditions and the Lyapunov method, the sufficient conditions for the realization of bipartite formation and guaranteed-cost bipartite formation are obtained in terms of linear matrix inequality, respectively. Finally, the effectiveness of the theoretical results is demonstrated by numerical examples.

Spatiotemporal patterns in seagrass-epiphyte dynamics for Thalassia testudinum in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico were evaluated through biomass measurements and scanned-image based metrics to investigate the potentially harmful impact of excessive epiphyte accumulations on seagrass condition. Image analysis with Spectral Angle Mapper algorithms distinguished epiphyte and uncovered seagrass leaf pixels to generate a normalized metric of leaf area coverage (epiphyte pixels/total leaf pixels). Imaging metrics were compared to biomass-based metrics seasonally, among three locations with different environmental conditions (depth, salinity, temperature and nutrient levels inferred from sediment porewater measurements) near Redfish Bay, Texas, USA. Image analysis, in conjunction with biomass measures, provides enhanced insight into the seagrass-epiphyte dynamic relationship and how it varies with environmental conditions. Compared with the biomass and morphological measures, image analysis may be more informative as an indicator of environmental changes. Variation in linear regressions of epiphyte biomass vs. epiphyte area (pixels) suggested changes in the thickness and/or density of accumulated epiphytes across environmental contexts and seasons. Two different epiphyte colonization patterns were presented based on the correlation between the normalized metrics of epiphyte load and epiphyte leaf coverage. The epiphyte load was highest at low temperatures and locations with elevated DIN:P ratio in sediment porewater. Conversely, the mean leaf coverage by epiphytes stayed relatively constant (± 10%) across seasons but differed by location (25% ~55% in this case), suggesting that leaf growth in this study is regulated to maintain the proportion of uncolonized leaf surface and that epiphyte coverage plays a role in its regulation.

Psoriasis is a chronic scaly skin disease, which is associated with abnormal immune system function, inflammatory cell infiltration. The disadvantages of traditional treatment of psoriasis are poor efficacy, recurrence of the condition, long treatment time, and systemic side effects due to a lack of an appropriate drug delivery system. A liposome-in-Microneedles (MNs) based transdermal drug delivery system had been developed to provide efficient site-specific drug delivery, stable drug release and enhanced permeability. Firstly, liposomes were loaded with Ginsenoside Rg3 (a small molecular compound with anti-inflammatory and immune regulation functions), then Rg3-liposomes (Rg3-Lipo) were successfully loaded into MNs. Abstract Burning rate of solid propellants can be effectively improved by adding catalysts and using smaller size ammonium perchlorate (AP). Although few reports, the exploration of changing the size of AP primary particles by catalysts is of great significance for improving combustion performance. Here, taking Co‐bipy as an example, the potential advantages of such materials as AP decomposition catalysts are reported. Due to the existence of NO3− combined with oxygen rich environment provided by AP, the structural self‐transformation from micronrods to nanoparticles can be quickly realized during the heating process. More importantly, when Co‐bipy decomposes, it can play the role of “scalpel” and in situ cut AP particles. Results show that high‐temperature decomposition of Co‐bipy/AP occurs at 305.8 °C, which is 137.5 °C lower than that of pure AP. Catalytic mechanism is discussed by in situ IR and TG‐IR, CoO can effectively increase the content of reactive oxygen species and weaken the N–H bond, realizing the rapid oxidation of NH3. Eventually, the behavior of Co‐bipy cutting AP particles is tested. This interesting catalyst structure self‐transformation behavior can not only realize the influence on AP, but also perform a positive function in the combustion process of solid propellants, such as opening the adhesive AP interface.

Monitoring and analyzing radio interference sources play a crucial role in ensuring the safe operation of civil aviation navigation, communication, airport management, and air traffic control. Traditional ground monitoring methods are slow and inadequate for tracking aerial and mobile interference sources effectively. Although flight methods such as helicopters and airships can effectively monitor aerial interference, the flight approval process is time-consuming and expensive. This paper investigates a novel approach to locating civil aviation radio interference sources using four unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to address this issue. It establishes a model for aerial positioning of radio interference sources with the four UAVs and proposes a method for time synchronization and data communication among them. The paper conducts simulations of the four-UAV time–frequency difference positioning method, analyzing the geometric accuracy dilution with different deployment configurations of the UAVs, positioning biases, and root mean square errors (RMSEs) under varying interference source movement speeds. The simulation results provide crucial data to support subsequent experiments.

Abstract Background Stroke has always been a major threat worldwide but is most severe in China, with 2.5 million new stroke cases each year and 7.5 million stroke survivors, placing a heavy burden on the social and national health care systems. Zhishi Rhubarb Soup (ZRS) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has been used clinically for many years in China. To explore the potential mechanism of ZRS in the treatment of stroke, liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was performed. Methods In this study, a quantitative proteomic method with LC–MS was used to analyse the proteomic differences between MACO samples treated with ZRS and those without ZRS treatment. Results Liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC–MS) analysis led to the identification of 35,006 peptides, with 5160.0 proteins identified and 4094.0 quantified. Tendon mechanical properties are significantly compromised in adult tendon injuries, tendon-related birth defects, and connective tissue disorders. Unfortunately, there currently is no effective treatment to restore native tendon mechanical properties after postnatal tendon injury or abnormal fetal development. Approaches to promote crosslinking of extracellular matrix components in tendon have been proposed to enhance insufficient mechanical properties of fibrotic tendon after healing. However, these crosslinking agents, which are not naturally present in the body, are associated with toxicity and significant reductions in metabolic activity at concentrations that enhance tendon mechanical properties. In contrast, we propose that an effective method to restore tendon mechanical properties would be to promote lysyl oxidase (LOX)-mediated collagen crosslinking in tendon during adult tissue healing or fetal tissue development. LOX is naturally occurring in the body, and we previously demonstrated LOX-mediated collagen crosslinking to be a critical regulator of tendon mechanical properties during new tissue formation. In this study, we examined the effects of recombinant LOX treatment on tendon at different stages of development. We found that recombinant LOX treatment significantly enhanced tensile and nanoscale tendon mechanical properties without affecting cell viability or collagen content, density, and maturity. Interestingly, both tendon elastic modulus and LOX-mediated collagen crosslink density plateaued at higher recombinant LOX concentrations, which may have been due to limited availability of adjacent lysine residues that are near enough to be crosslinked together. The plateau in crosslink density at higher concentrations of recombinant LOX treatments may have implications for preventing over-stiffening of tendon, though this requires further investigation. These findings demonstrate the exciting potential for a LOX-based therapeutic to enhance tendon mechanical properties via a naturally occurring crosslinking mechanism, which could have tremendous implications for an estimated 32 million acute and chronic tendon and ligament injuries each year in the U.S.

Micro/nanoparticles-based drug delivery system has emerged significantly and has influenced the pharma industry up to considerable extent. At the same time, the development of production methods that are cost effective, scalable and reproducible becomes crucial to ensure the clinical translation of any development. The application of electrospray (ES) technology in micro-nano drug delivery system not only has the above advantages, but also can quickly obtain uniform and stable micro/nanoparticles as drug carriers through its own characteristics. Natural or synthetic polymers are often used as raw materials for these micro/nanoparticles. The micro/nanoparticles carriers prepared by these polymers can change the solubility and bioavailability of drugs and reduce the toxicity caused by mass accumulation after sudden drug release. And after reaching the target site, they’re easy to degrade and will not accumulate in the body. In this review, taken together, we briefly describe the principle and advantages of ES, as well as the common polymers for the preparation of micro/nanoparticles by this method. The types of electrosprayed micro/nanoparticles and their advantages as micro-nano drug delivery systems in different drug delivery routes and different diseases were also discussed. And prospects are made for the future development of electrospray in the field of medicine.

Dimocarpus longan Lour. (also called as longan) is a subtropical and tropical evergreen tree belonging to the Sapindaceae family and is widely distributed in China, Southeast Asia and South Asia. The pulp of longan fruit is a time-honored traditional medicinal and edible raw material in China and some Asian countries. With the advancement of food therapy in modern medicine, longan fruit pulp as an edible medicinal material is expected to usher in its rapid development as a functional nutrient. As one of the main constituents of longan fruit pulp, longan fruit pulp polysaccharides (LPs) play an indispensable role in longan fruit pulp-based functional utilization. This review aims to outline the extraction and purification methods, structural characteristics and biological activities (such as immunoregulatory, anti-tumor, prebiotic, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and inhibition of AChE activity) of LPs. Besides, the structure-activity relationship, application prospect and patent application of LPs were analyzed and summarized. Through the systematic summary, this review attempts to provide a theoretical basis for further research of LPs, and promote the industrial development of this class of polysaccharides.

The premise of the intentional model of split-ticket voting is that some voters split their tickets simply because they prefer divided government and believe in constant "checks and balances." This article examines whether this premise stands firm in an emerging democracy like Taiwan. That is, by using survey data in Taiwan, we explore whether one's attitude toward divided or unified government is "real." We hypothesize that a citizen's attitude toward "checks and balances" is subject to change, and conditional on whether her preferred party is in power. Specifically, we speculate that a citizen would tend to hold the balancing perspective or favor divided government, if her preferred party is in opposition. However, if her preferred party becomes the ruling party, she would be more likely to oppose (hold) the balancing (non-balancing) perspective or favor unified government. We then utilize panel survey data embedded in Taiwan's Election and Democratization Studies (TEDS) to verify our hypothesis.

Survival benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) remained controversial in patients with stage II/III rectal cancer (RC) who received neoadjuvant therapy and surgery. This study aimed to investigate the guiding role of elevated pretreatment serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels for receiving ACT in yield pathological Tis-3N0 (ypTis-3N0) RC patients after neoadjuvant radiotherapy and surgery. Between 2004 and 2015, 10,973 RC patients with ypTis-3N0 who received neoadjuvant radiotherapy and radical surgery were retrospectively analyzed using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Compared with CEA-normal group, elevated-CEA patients had worse 5-year CSS rate (90.1 vs 83.5%). The 5-year CSS rates were 86.3 and 87.4% for ypTis-3N0M0 patients with or without ACT, respectively. Patients receiving ACT had a comparable 5-year CSS rate compared to those who did not regardless of CEA levels in ypTis-3N0M0 RC patients (CEA elevation group: 76.4 vs. 83.5%, P = 0.305; CEA normal group: 90.0 vs. 90.1%, P = 0.943). Intriguingly, ypT3N0M0 RC patients with elevated CEA levels may benefit from ACT (5-year CSS: 69.1 vs. 82.9%, P = 0.045), while those with normal CEA levels did not (5-year CSS: 89.3 vs. 89.3%, P = 0.885). Multivariate Cox analysis demonstrated that ACT tended to be a protective factor in elevated-CEA ypT3N0M0 RC patients (HR = 0.633, 95% CI = 0.344–1.164, P = 0.141), while ACT was not associated with improved CSS in normal-CEA ypT3N0M0 RC patients (HR = 1.035, 95% CI = 0.487–2.202, P = 0.928). Elevated pretreatment serum CEA levels may serve as a promising biomarker guiding ACT in rectal cancer patients with ypT3N0M0.

We study the synchronization of complex networks by using event-sampling information. The nodes of the network are connected with event-triggered communication via multiple couplings. The couplings are split into several channels. Not all the channels are connected. Only a part of the states of each node can be communicated by the channels. An event detector is designed for each channel to independently determine the sampling moments. The couplings of the network are partial and event-triggered. Both features make that less information can be used for synchronization. The pinning controllers are also designed based on the sampled information. By establishing a time-dependent Lyapunov functional and utilizing an efficient event condition, we derive less conservative criteria for the synchronization of complex networks. Finally, the effectiveness of our main results is verified by an illustrative example, and comparisons are also presented to show how much conservatism can be reduced.

The consensus protocol of cyber-physical power systems is proposed based on fractional-order multi-agent systems with communication constraints. It aims to enable each generator to reach a time-varying common rotor angle and rotor speed. Communication constraints including event-triggered sampling and partial information transmission are considered to render the consensus protocol more realistic. The Zeno behavior is excluded during the system sampling process. A sufficient condition is derived to solve the consensus problem. The effectiveness of the proposed consensus protocol is demonstrated by a numerical example.

As a model study for improving undergraduate organic chemistry laboratories with contemporary research concepts and practices, we evaluated a project module aiming at the synthesis of two porphyrin compounds. The module was implemented in a format that differed in several ways from that of a traditional course. It was designed for small student group participation in a research-oriented setting. The students were given multiple choices of literature methods for the synthesis. They were led to discuss the pros and cons and rate the practicality of the methods against the project goals and laboratory conditions. Participation in the reasoning and decision-making processes substantially enhanced the depth of learning. They were encouraged to innovate and resolve an equipment problem incidental to the chosen method by creating a steam bath reactor. They were urged to cut down on waste and study the use of hydrophobic compounds in water for sustainability. The products of the project module were designed to support ongoing research, which gave the students a strong sense of reality and responsibility. They were motivated to care for the details and quality of their work by a desire to provide quality products for their intended research. As an option instead of a full implementation of the proposed format, the project module can be modified to serve as a four-session curriculum for a traditional organic chemistry laboratories course. We expect it will add dimensions to the learning of organic chemistry through the enhanced practice of problem-solving and connecting lab activities to the modern environment.

Since 2008, the Taiwan Ministry of Education has been encouraging government agencies and private organizations to establish Active aging learning centers (AALCs). This has led to the engagement of AALCs across communities in Taiwan. We explored AALC organizers' experiences with negotiations during program planning. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 AALC program planners: five men and 13 women. They were aged 38-75 years, with an average age of 56 years. The interview data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The results indicated that the interviewees managed the opinions and needs of various policy planners, internal and external departments, groups, and individuals. The interviewees also noted that new directions and concepts for courses were the foundation for negotiations. The internal negotiation was based on the needs of the older adults, whereas external negotiation was based on mutually beneficial relationships. To set goals and establish systems for cooperation and program development, the interviewees had to consider a range of opinions. Under shared policies and regulations, they negotiated the interests and needs of all parties and considered the community's characteristics to develop older adult learning courses. In conclusion, understanding the outcomes of negotiations facilitates not only the planning of courses that cater to specific needs and characteristics but also the integration of older adult learning into the community, thereby promoting lifelong learning, intergenerational integration, and local development. The findings of this study can serve as references for AALCs during negotiations, communication, management, and program planning.

The adoption of English-Medium Instruction (EMI) has gained global traction, spurred on by higher education internationalization trends. Despite the widespread usage of EMI, its influence on students' language development remains relatively unexplored. This study investigated the impact of EMI instruction on the self-efficacy and English performance of Taiwanese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) undergraduates. The research aimed to discern whether EMI courses improve EFL undergraduates' self-efficacy and how this self-efficacy can predict English performance. 272 Taiwanese EFL undergraduates were recruited for the study, and all of them joined the EMI courses for at least one semester. Data collection instruments included a revised questionnaire and TOEIC test, and a mixed approach was applied for data analyses. Quantitative analyses of repeated measure of ANOVA revealed a significant enhancement in the students' self-efficacy across all four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) following EMI instruction. Moreover, the regression analysis established a moderate to strong positive relationship between English self-efficacy and English performance. The qualitative analysis of structured interview specifically elaborated on what participants' attitudes were toward the implementation of EMI. These findings underscore the positive influence of EMI instruction on EFL undergraduates' English self-efficacy and performance, substantiating the role of self-efficacy as a significant predictor of performance. These insights offer valuable implications for curriculum design, learner motivation, and academic success in EFL contexts.

Purpose: The importance of multidimensional and engaging instruction for sustainable development goals (SDGs) in higher education cannot be overstated. Such instructions should motivate students not only to memorize and contemplate these goals but also to actively participate in addressing SDG-related challenges. Consequently, this study aims to develop practical and appropriate instructional approaches to education for sustainable development (ESD) in higher education to enhance students' knowledge, attitudes and behaviors concerning sustainability. Design/methodology/approach: By using a quasi-experimental design, this ESD study was conducted at a university in central Taiwan. A total of 121 students from diverse academic backgrounds participated in the 16-week experiment, which was divided into three groups. Lecturing, thematic teaching and design-thinking strategies were applied to these respective groups. Findings: The thematic-teaching and design-thinking groups displaying improved cognitive performance. However, the quantity results revealed that the design-thinking group surpassed the other two groups in sustainability knowledge, attitudes, behaviors and mind map tasks. The qualitative findings further indicated that design thinking - through multiple practical problem-solving activities - guided college students to think independently and sustainably, as well as enabled them to internalize the value of sustainable development. By implementing these effective approaches, the core goals of ESD-related personal and societal transformations may be realized. Practical implications: This study proposed a goal-oriented ESD instructional model for educators, demonstrating the efficacy of design thinking in cultivating higher-order thinking and affection for ESD in students. Additionally, this study introduced an innovative evaluation approach - mind mapping - to the ESD domain, which may compensate for the limitations of the survey method. Originality/value: This study provides empirical evidence for the effectiveness of design thinking and thematic-based pedagogies in sustainable development higher education. Additionally, it also offers a practical ESD instructional model with reference value for scholars and multi-domain instructors. Moreover, the study highlights that by examining organizational governance from the perspectives of design thinking and higher-order affection, sustainable and economic development need not be mutually exclusive concepts. Instead, pursuing SDGs can be viewed as investment opportunities for organizations rather than mere costs.

More multipurpose and convenient demand driven by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and intelligent packaging require flexible power sources. A VO2(B)/graphene (VO2(B)/GN) core-shell composite was successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment with V2O5 and graphite. The as-obtained sample was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and XPS measurements. In addition, the electrochemical properties of VO2(B)/GN were tested. Due to its great electrochemical performance and mechanical properties, graphene could increase the electrochemical performance and strengthen the structural stability of the material at the same time. With increasing loading amount of GN, the specific capacitance of VO2(B)/GN increased correspondingly. With 20% GN loading, the initial discharge specific capacity could reach 197 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, and 160 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte, which is better than that of pure rod-like VO2(B). The capacitance of the VO2(B)/GN (20%) composite electrode retains 95.49% after 1000 cycles, which is higher than that of a pure VO2(B) electrode (85.43%), indicating that the VO2(B)/GN composite possesses better cycling stability. Moreover, a symmetrical solid-state supercapacitor (SCs) using VO2(B)/GN(20%) as the anode was assembled. Four printed SCs were connected in series to light up a 1.5 V red LED. This demonstrates its potential application in intelligent packaging to trace food safety.
