Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive cancer mainly caused by asbestos exposure. Specific and sensitive non-invasive biomarkers may facilitate and enhance screening programs for the early detection of cancer. We investigated DNA methylation (DNAm) profiles in MPM pre-diagnostic blood samples in a case-control study nested in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and nutrition (EPIC) cohort, aiming to characterise DNAm biomarkers associated with MPM. From the EPIC cohort, we included samples from 135 participants who developed MPM during 20 years of follow up and from 135 matched, cancer-free, controls. For the discovery phase we selected EPIC participants who developed MPM within five years from enrolment (n=36) with matched controls. We identified nine differentially methylated CpGs, selected by 10-fold cross-validation and correlation analyses: cg25755428 (MRI1), cg20389709 (KLF11), cg23870316, cg13862711 (LHX6), cg06417478 (HOOK2), cg00667948, cg01879420 (AMD1), cg25317025 (RPL17) and cg06205333 (RAP1A). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the model including baseline characteristics (age, sex, PC1wbc) along with the nine MPM-related CpGs has a better predictive value for MPM occurrence than the baseline model alone, maintaining some performance also at more than five years before diagnosis [AUC (area under the curve) 10 years=0.75; baseline AUC range=0.63-0.67)]. DNAm changes as non-invasive biomarkers in pre-diagnostic blood samples of MPM cases were investigated for the first time. Their application can improve the identification of asbestos-exposed individuals at higher MPM risk in order to possibly adopt more intensive monitoring for early disease identification.

Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) has been used for “off-label” treatment when annuloplasty band ring for mitral repair fails. However, the complex anatomy and function of the mitral valve may lead to fatal complications as a result of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction in TMVR. We report the structural and hemodynamic response of LVOT obstruction resulting from TMVR with the Edwards SAPIEN 3 Ultra (S3) device. We modified the original Living Heart Human Model (LHHM) to account for a failed mitral valve with an annuloplasty band ring and simulated the cardiac beating condition in the setting of S3 device implantation. Findings demonstrated a high dynamic behavior of the newly formed LVOT (neoLVOT) as confined by the displaced mitral valve and the interventricular septum. During the cardiac beat, the neoLVOT area oscillated from a maximum of 472.1 mm2 at early systole to the minimum of 183 mm2 at end-systole. The profile of both anchoring force and contact pressure revealed that the band ring serves as the anchoring zone while mitral valve is primally displaced by the deployed device. At early systole, computational flow dynamics highlighted hemodynamic disturbances associated with the LVOT obstruction, with a skewed flow towards the septum and a pressured drop of 4.5 mmHg between the left ventricular apex and the neoLVOT region. This study can lead to a more accurate assessment of the risk induced by the LVOT obstruction when stratifying patient anatomic suitability for TMVR.

The inner-alpine dry valleys of the Swiss Alps are characterized by subcontinental climate, leading to many peculiarities in dry grassland species composition. Despite their well-known uniqueness, comprehensive studies on biodiversity patterns of the dry grasslands in these valleys were still missing. To close this gap, we sampled 161 10-m2 vegetation plots in the Rhône, Rhine and Inn valleys, recording vascular plants, terricolous bryophyte and lichen species, as well as environmental data. Additionally, we tested the scale-dependence of environmental drivers using 34 nested-plot series with seven grain sizes (0.0001–100 m2). We analysed the effects of environmental drivers related to productivity/stress, disturbance and within-plot heterogeneity on species richness. Mean species richness ranged from 2.3 species in 0.0001 m2 to 58.8 species in 100 m2. For all taxa combined, the most relevant drivers at the grain size of 10 m2 were southing (negative), litter (negative), mean annual precipitation (unimodal), gravel cover (negative), inclination (unimodal) and mean annual precipitation (unimodal). For vascular plants the pattern was similar, while bryophyte and lichen richness differed by the opposite relationship to mean annual precipitation as well as negative influences of mean herb layer height, grazing and mowing. The explained variance of the multiple regression model increased with grain size, with very low values for the smallest two grain sizes. While southing and litter had high importance for the fiver larger grain sizes, pH and gravel cover were particularly important at the intermediate grain sizes, and inclination and mean annual precipitation for the two largest grain sizes. The findings emphasize the importance of taxonomic group and grain size for patterns and drivers of species richness in vegetation, consistent with ecological theory. Differences in the diversity–environment relationships among the three taxonomic groups can partly be explained by asymmetric competition that leads to low bryophyte and lichen diversity where vascular plants do well and vice versa. The relatively low alpha diversity of vascular plants in dry grasslands in Swiss inner-alpine valleys compared to similar communities in other parts of the Palaearctic remains puzzling, especially because Swiss stands are often large and well-preserved.

Simple Summary Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive and still incurable cancer. There is an urgent need to identify effective and reliable tools for detecting and diagnosing the early onset of MPM. In our study, we investigated the whole miRNAs expression profile from serum extracellular vesicles to identify early changes related to MPM development. miR-11400, miR-148a-3p, and miR-409-3p levels were increased in pre-clinical MPM patients up to five years before their diagnosis. The three-miRNA pattern showed a good discrimination capacity to distinguish pre-clinical MPM from cancer-free controls. The three miRNAs also displayed high diagnostic capabilities for differentiating between MPM patients and controls. This study identified a potential EV miRNA signature in preclinical MPM up to five years before diagnosis and raises the possibility of early intervention. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer with a dismal prognosis. Early therapeutic interventions could improve patient outcomes. We aimed to identify a pattern of microRNAs (miRNAs) as potential early non-invasive markers of MPM. In a case-control study nested in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort, we screened the whole miRNome in serum extracellular vesicles (EVs) of preclinical MPM cases. In a subgroup of 20 preclinical samples collected five years prior MPM diagnosis, we observed an upregulation of miR-11400 (fold change (FC) = 2.6, adjusted p-value = 0.01), miR-148a-3p (FC = 1.5, p-value = 0.001), and miR-409-3p (FC = 1.5, p-value = 0.04) relative to matched controls. The 3-miRNA panel showed a good classification capacity with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.81 (specificity = 0.75, sensitivity = 0.70). The diagnostic ability of the model was also evaluated in an independent retrospective cohort, yielding a higher predictive power (AUC = 0.86). A signature of EV miRNA can be detected up to five years before MPM; moreover, the identified miRNAs could provide functional insights into the molecular changes related to the late carcinogenic process, preceding MPM development.

Urban green infrastructure could represent an important mean for environmental mitigation, if designed according to the principles of restoration ecology. Moreover, if suitably executed, managed and sized, they may be assimilated to meta-populations of natural habitats, deserving to be included in the biodiversity monitoring networks. In this chapter, we combined automatised and expert opinion-based procedures in order to select the vascular plant assemblages to populate different microhabitats (differing in terms of light and moisture) co-occurring on an existing green roof in Zurich (Switzerland). Our results lead to identify three main plant species groups, which prove to be the most suitable for the target roof. These guilds belong to mesoxeric perennial grasslands (Festuco-Brometea), nitrophilous ephemeral communities (Stellarietea mediae) and drought-tolerant pioneer species linked to nutrient-poor soils (Koelerio-Corynephoretea). Some ruderal and stress-tolerant species referred to the class Artemisietea vulgaris appear to fit well with local roof characteristics, too. Inspired by plant sociology, this method also considers conservation issues, analysing whether the plants selected through our procedure were characteristic of habitats of conservation interest according to Swiss and European laws and directives. Selecting plant species with different life cycles and life traits may lead to higher plant species richness, which in turn may improve the functional complexity and the ecosystem services provided by green roofs and green infrastructure in general.

Urban environments consist of a mosaic of natural fragments, planned and unintentional habitats hosting both introduced and spontaneous species. The latter group exploits abandoned and degraded urban niches which, in the case of plants, form what is called thethird landscape. In the Anthropocene, cities, open spaces and buildings must be planned and designed considering not only human needs but also those of other living organisms. The scientific approach of habitat sharing is defined asreconciliation ecology, whilst the action of implementing the ecosystem services and functioning of such anthropogenic habitats is calledUrban Rehabilitation. However, urban development still represents the main cause of biodiversity loss worldwide. Yet, the approach of planners and landscape architects highly diverges from that of ecologists and scientists on how to perceive, define and design urban green and blue infrastructure. For instance, designers focus on the positive impact thatnature(generally associated with indoor and outdoor greeneries) has onhumanwell-being, often neglecting ecosystems’ health. Instead, considering the negative impact of any form of development and to achieve theno net lossAichi’s objectives, conservationists apply mitigation hierarchy policies to avoid or reduce the impact and to offset biodiversity. The rationale of this review paper is to set the fundamentals for a multidisciplinary design framework tackling the issue of biodiversity loss in the urban environment bydesign for nature. The method focuses on the building/city/landscape scales and is enabled by emerging digital technologies, i.e., geographic information systems, building information modelling, ecological simulation and computational design.

Among Citrus species, lemon is one of the most susceptible to mal secco disease, a tracheomycosis caused by the mitosporic fungus Plenodomus tracheiphilus, which induces chlorosis followed by leaf drop and progressive desiccation of twigs and branches. Severe infection can cause the death of the plant. Since no effective control strategies are available to efficiently control the pathogen spread, host tolerance is the most desirable goal in the struggle against mal secco disease. To date, both traditional breeding programs and biotechnological techniques were not efficient in developing novel varieties coupling tolerance to mal secco with optimal fruit quality. Furthermore, the genetic basis of host resistance has not been fully deciphered yet, hampering the set-up of marker-assisted selection (MAS) schemes. This paper provides an overview of the biotechnological approaches adopted so far for the selection of mal secco tolerant lemon varieties and emphasizes the promising contribution of marker-trait association analysis techniques for both unraveling the genetic determinism of the resistance to mal secco and detecting molecular markers that can be readily used for MAS. Such an approach has already proved its efficiency in several crops and could represent a valuable tool to select novel lemon varieties coupling superior fruit quality traits and resistance to mal secco.

Green infrastructure is a structural system of naturally developed human societies, capable of preserving and ensuring as much space as possible to the local biodiversity. For this reason, green infrastructure shall be planned and designed so that the urban built environment is in harmony with the surrounding biotic communities. The challenge is to sustain nature-based solutions in order to improve citizens’ awareness towards natural and semi-natural ecosystems while providing our society with a more liveable, healthier, safer and fairer environment. This book puts an emphasis on the services the city can offer to nature, thanks to a multidisciplinary approach involving scientists and practitioners from different backgrounds: vegetation ecologists, architects, landscape architects, engineers and agronomists. The 26 contributions following this first chapter are organised in alphabetical order around three thematic pillars: (a) green infrastructure, urban ecology and vegetation science; (b) planning and implementation of green infrastructure; (c) nature-based solutions and innovative design approaches. The green infrastructure as we intend in this book includes urban and peri-urban spaces seen as semi-natural ecosystems, designed to establish mutually beneficial interactions and synergies with the surrounding natural ecosystems.

Cities are considered hotspots of biodiversity due to their high number of habitats such as ruderal areas, wastelands and masonry works hosting peculiar biocoenoses. Urban biodiversity represents a challenging and paradigmatic case for contemporary ecology and nature conservation because a clear distinction between nature reserves and anthropogenic lands is becoming obsolete. In this context, extensive green roofs may represent suitable habitat for ground-nesting birds and wild plants, providing suitable conditions occur. In this paper, case studies are used to show how existing extensive green roofs can be improved in order to make them function as replacement habitat for endangered ground-nesting birds. The setup of an uneven topography, combined with hay spreading and seed sowing, significantly enhanced the reproductive performance of the northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), one of the most endangered ground-nesting birds in Switzerland.

Lemon (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f.) is an evergreen tree belonging to the genus Citrus. The fruits are particularly prized for the organoleptic and nutraceutical properties of the juice and for the quality of the essential oils in the peel. Herein, we report, for the first time, the release of a high-quality reference genome of the two haplotypes of lemon. The sequencing has been carried out coupling Illumina short reads and Oxford Nanopore data leading to the definition of a primary and an alternative assembly characterized by a genome size of 312.8 Mb and 324.74 Mb respectively, which agree well with an estimated genome size of 312 Mb. The analysis of the transposable element (TE) allowed the identification of 2878 regions on the primary and 2897 on the alternative assembly distributed across the nine chromosomes. Furthermore, an in silico analysis of the microRNA genes was carried out using 246 mature miRNA and the respective pre-miRNA hairpin sequences of Citrus sinensis. Such analysis highlighted a high conservation between the two species with 233 mature miRNAs and 51 pre-miRNA stem-loops aligning with perfect match on the lemon genome. In parallel, total RNA was extracted from fruit, flower, leaf, and root enabling the detection of 35,020 and 34,577 predicted transcripts on primary and alternative assemblies respectively. To further characterize the annotated transcripts based on their function, a gene ontology and a gene orthology analysis with other Citrus and Citrus-related species were carried out. The availability of a reference genome is an important prerequisite both for the setup of high-throughput genotyping analysis and for functional genomic approaches toward the characterization of the genetic determinism of traits of agronomic interest.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm. Patients are usually diagnosed when current treatments have limited benefits, highlighting the need for noninvasive tests aimed at an MPM risk assessment tool that might improve life expectancy. Three hundred asbestos-exposed subjects (163 MPM cases and 137 cancer-free controls), from the same geographical region in Italy, were recruited. The evaluation of asbestos exposure was conducted considering the frequency, the duration and the intensity of occupational, environmental and domestic exposure. A genome-wide methylation array was performed to identify novel blood DNA methylation (DNAm) markers of MPM. Multiple regression analyses adjusting for potential confounding factors and interaction between asbestos exposure and DNAm on the MPM odds ratio were applied. Epigenome-wide analysis (EWAS) revealed 12 single-CpGs associated with the disease. Two of these showed high statistical power (99%) and effect size (&gt, 0.05) after false discovery rate (FDR) multiple comparison corrections: (i) cg03546163 in FKBP5, significantly hypomethylated in cases (Mean Difference in beta values (MD) = −0.09, 95% CI = −0.12|−0.06, p = 1.2 × 10−7), and (ii) cg06633438 in MLLT1, statistically hypermethylated in cases (MD = 0.07, 95% CI = 0.04|0.10, p = 1.0 × 10−6). Based on the interaction analysis, asbestos exposure and epigenetic profile together may improve MPM risk assessment. Above-median asbestos exposure and hypomethylation of cg03546163 in FKBP5 (OR = 20.84, 95% CI = 8.71|53.96, p = 5.5 × 10−11) and hypermethylation of cg06633438 in MLLT1 (OR = 11.71, 95% CI = 4.97|29.64, p = 5.9 × 10−8) genes compared to below-median asbestos exposure and hyper/hypomethylation of single-CpG DNAm, respectively. Receiver Operation Characteristics (ROC) for Case-Control Discrimination showed a significant increase in MPM discrimination when DNAm information was added in the model (baseline model, BM: asbestos exposure, age, gender and white blood cells), area under the curve, AUC = 0.75, BM + cg03546163 at FKBP5. AUC = 0.89, 2.1 × 10−7, BM + cg06633438 at MLLT1. AUC = 0.89, 6.3 × 10−8. Validation and replication procedures, considering independent sample size and a different DNAm analysis technique, confirmed the observed associations. Our results suggest the potential application of DNAm profiles in blood to develop noninvasive tests for MPM risk assessment in asbestos-exposed subjects.

Simple Summary Our study is the first one to investigate DNA methylation changes in white blood cells (WBCs) from easily accessible peripheral blood as malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) survival biomarker. The Cox proportional hazards regression model highlighted that the methylation status of the CpG dinucleotide cg03546163 is an independent marker of prognosis in MPM patients with a better performance than traditional inflammation-based scores such as lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR). Biological validation and replication showed that epigenetic changes at the FKBP5 gene were robustly associated with overall survival (OS) in MPM cases. The identification of simple and valuable prognostic markers for MPM will enable clinicians to select patients who are most likely to benefit from aggressive therapies and avoid subjecting non-responder patients to ineffective treatment. Considering 12 months as a cut-off for OS, epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) revealed statistically significant (p value = 7.7 × 10−9) OS-related differential methylation of a single-CpG (cg03546163), located in the 5′UTR region of the FKBP5 gene. This is an independent marker of prognosis in MPM patients with a better performance than traditional inflammation-based scores such as lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR). Cases with DNAm < 0.45 at the cg03546163 had significantly poor survival compared with those showing DNAm ≥ 0.45 (mean: 243 versus 534 days; p value< 0.001). Epigenetic changes at the FKBP5 gene were robustly associated with OS in MPM cases. Our results showed that blood DNA methylation levels could be promising and dynamic prognostic biomarkers in MPM.

Background: Anthocyanin pigmentation characterizes a number of tissues of Citrus and its relatives. The gain and loss of pigmentation is intriguing and is inherited variously among species. Methods: Citrus germplasm was used to investigate the anthocyanin pigmentation of tissues never before considered, including stamen, style and stigma, and of young leaves, petals, rind and flesh of 28 genotypes belonging to 14 species. Citrus genotypes encompassed citron, lemon, sweet orange, lime, and Citrus relatives included Microcitrus, Murraya, and Severinia. A relative qRT-PCR analysis was carried out on the structural and regulatory genes: phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS), chalcone isomerase (CHI), flavanone 3&prime, hydroxylase (F3H), dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR), anthocyanidin synthase (ANS), uridine diphosphate glucose flavonoid glucosyl-transferase (UFGT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), Ruby and Noemi. Image analysis and a genomic approach were employed to evaluate how the red pigmentation is inherited among tissues and species. Results: Pigmentation of young leaves and petals is specific to citron and its hybrids. Ruby controls the pigmentation of petals, but not of leaves. The red color of the rind and flesh is a trait that particularly characterizes a diversity of sweet oranges, citron hybrids and Citrus relatives. Color expression depends on external factors and also on developmental stage. The coloration of stamen and style is citron-specific, while a red stigma is exclusive to Moro orange and its hybrids. Conclusion: It is hypothesized that there is a relationship among Citrus species and genes controlling anthocyanin pigmentation.

The 12th EDGG Field Workshop took place from 11 to 19 May 2019, organised by the Vegetation Ecology Group of the Institute of Natural Resource Sciences (IUNR) of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). Like in the 11th Field Workshop in Austria, the main target was the "Inneralpine Trockenvegetation" (Festuco-Brometea and Sedo-Scleranthetea), which was first extensively sampled by Josias Braun-Blanquet and collaborators during the 1950s. We visited the Rhône valley in the cantons of Vaud and Valais, one of the most ex-treme xerothermic islands of the Alps and the Rhine and Inn valleys in the canton of Grison. In total, 30 nested-plot series (EDGG biodi-versity plots) of 0.0001 to 100 m² and 82 plots of 10 m² were sampled in meso-xeric, xeric and rocky grasslands of 25 different sites, rang-ing from 500 to 1,656 m a.s.l., under different topographic, bedrock and landuse conditions. All vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens were recorded in each plot, along with their cover values. We found on average 28.9 vascular plants on 10 m²; which was the lowest mean species richness of any previous EDGG Field Workshop. These values are comparable to the average species richness values of dry grasslands of the Aosta valley in Italy. The data sampled will be used to understand the biodiversity patterns regionally and in the Palae-arctic context as well as to place the Swiss dry grasslands in the modern European syntaxonomic system.

According to projects and practices that the Italian botanists and ecologists are carrying out for bringing “more nature in the city”, new insights for a factual integration between ecological perspectives and more consolidated aesthetic and agronomic approaches to the sustainable planning and management of urban green areas are provided.

Green infrastructure and in particular green roofs are crucial to meet the challenge of sustainable urbanisation fostered by the current European Research and Innovation agenda. Several documents were issued in the last decades in Europe for regulating the design, construction and up-keep of roof greening. In particular, the actual German guidelines have been widely adopted as a reference basis for green roof design and regulation worldwide, because of its exhaustiveness and proven building- and landscaping tradition. With the aim to assess the effectiveness of green roof guidelines and norms in supporting plant and soil biodiversity in different ecoregions, and particularly of the Mediterranean one, the German guidelines, the Swiss and Italian norms are screened and discussed in this paper. The German guidelines were chosen for their traditional referential role, the Swiss norm for its peculiar biodiversity approach, the Italian one for its application on a territory with remarkably heterogeneous environmental conditions, stretching from Alpine to Mediterranean ecosystems. Even if the three documents at comparison addressed to some extent biodiversity-related matters, none of them deepened the relationship between plant species selection (local ecotypes), growing medium composition (materials, granular size and thickness) and system build-ups (multi-layers and/or single-layer systems). This is a crucial point for countries, like Italy, encompassing very different climatic conditions. It was concluded that at the current knowledge a guideline/norm taking into account the peculiarities of green roof design in the Mediterranean ecoregion has to be widely refined.

Our aim was to add information to the current literature on vulvar Paget disease by reviewing a consistent number of patients who have been all diagnosed, treated, and followed up by the same group of physicians at a single medical institution.Clinical, surgical, histological, and follow-up data of 34 patients (mean [SD] age at diagnosis = 68.7 [10.1] years) with vulvar Paget disease were reviewed during a 27-year period.Primary symptoms were itching (76.5%) and burning (58.8%). Clinical manifestations were present for a mean (SD) of 17.8 (7.2) months before the diagnosis was made. Multifocal lesions were observed in 17 patients (50%) and were associated with a delay in diagnosis exceeding 12 months (p = .03). Of the patients, 10 (29.4%) presented a history of malignancy in other sites. Surgery with various extent of resection was performed as primary treatment in all patients. Definitive histological examination revealed positive surgical margins in 15 cases (44.1%), stromal invasion in 4 (11.7%), and associated adenocarcinoma in 2 (5.9%). Of the patients, 6 (17.6%) underwent reconstructive technique at their primary surgery or radicalization. During a mean (SD) follow-up of 76.9 (51.3) months, 15 patients (44.1%) experienced local recurrence (1 recurrence in 29.4%, 2 recurrences in 5.9%, and 3 recurrences in 8.8%). First recurrence appeared after a mean (SD) time of 45.7 (25.1) months and was associated with multifocal lesions (p = 0.005) and surgical margins involvement (p = 0.03). One patient (2.6%) died of the disease.Vulvar Paget disease is a chronic disease with high recurrence rate and low mortality. Early diagnosis, minimal surgery with free margins, and long-term follow-up are the cornerstones of treatment.

I tetti verdi rappresentano uno strumento essenziale di mitigazione e compensazione ambientale all’interno del tessuto urbano dove, l’alta densità edilizia e l’elevato disturbo antropico concedono poco spazio alle dinamiche naturali. In particolare, i tetti verdi per la biodiversità caratterizzati da mosaici di micro-habitat diversi e contigui tra loro, possano ospitare specie con caratteristiche morfo-funzionali diverse. L’approccio noto come habitat template, consiste nel selezionare le specie vegetali adatte alle condizioni sui tetti estensivi tra quelle che in natura crescono in condizioni simili e.g. spessore di substrato ridotto e povero di sostanze nutritive, lunghi periodi di aridità. L’approccio fitosociologico prevede l’individuazione di habitat analoghi non solo come riferimento da cui estrapolare le specie vegetali, ma come modello per aggregare le piante in consorzi specifici, così come suggerisce l’interpretazione fitosociologica della natura. Cities are defined as heterotrophic organisms (Odum, 1983) as they consumes a huge amount of resources and causes habitat loss and fragmentation. Green roofs represents a fundamental mean of ecological compensation within the built environment, i.e. in highly altered and disturbed places by humans. In particular, green roofs for biodiversity (or biodiversity green roofs), being characterised by different but contiguous microhabitat (habitat mosaics or patches), can host several species with different functional traits. The methods known as habitat template consists of choosing suitable plant species for green roofs among the one that live in nature under similar conditions e.g. shallow and nutrient poor substrate, high drought. The phytosociological approach considers habitat analogue not only as species pools, but also as a model to group plants in specific associations as suggested in the phytosociological interpretation of nature.

The variations in species composition and assemblage of unmanaged simple-intensive green roofs in Hannover, Germany, were investigated over a thirty year period, in order to assess the persistence of the initial seed mixture and to evaluate floristic changes. The roofs were greened in 1985 with soil-based turf rolls sown with a mixture of five grasses (Festuca rubra, Festuca ovina, Agrostis capillaris, Lolium perenne and Poa pratensis). Three sets of 120 phytosociological releves, sampled in 1987, 1999 and 2014, have been compared to assess: (1) nestedness vs spatial turnover, (2) functional diversity and (3) the importance of vegetation dynamics on green roof performance and design. Results demonstrated that from 1987 to 1999 the species diversity increased and the species turnover prevailed over nestedness, due to the progressive niche occupation by new species. In contrast, from 1999 to 2014 species diversity remained steady, suggesting that nestedness prevailed over species turnover. The main driver of the observed functional changes was a shift towards relatively more thermoxeric conditions. In terms of plant life strategies, the competitive species sown on the roof gradually gave way to stress-tolerant and ruderal species, along with a progressive increase in species with shortdistance seed dispersal strategies. It is concluded that: (a) to create resilient green roofs, spontaneous colonisation should be accepted and considered as a design factor; and (b) regional plant communities could serve as a model for seed recruitment and installations.

Current scientific research points out the low number of papers focused on the environmental patterns in Mediterranean urban areas, where green infrastructure is still strongly underrated by scientists as well as by politicians, planners and decision-makers. In this paper, the results of a simple meta-analysis on the topics treated in scientific literature about the Mediterranean green roofs (MGRs) are presented. Our review pointed out the strikingly higher attention paid to building materials, energy efficiency and hydraulics with respect to life sciences (including basic ecology, horticulture, soil, plant and animal sciences) in the target paper selection. In fact, despite the availability of plentiful information about the Mediterranean vascular flora and vegetation, this is not so informing the selection of plants for roof greening purposes. The role of soil-based substrates in local bio-geochemical cycles, plant and animal communities and their dynamics have also been poorly studied so far. Social and perceptive aspects are completely underrated too, whilst the management strategies and the dominant economic approach are informed more by energy-saving than by the finding innovative and sustainable materials and techniques. More investments are needed to: 1) diversify the techniques and materials for roof construction, respecting local ecoregional features and circular economy; 2) sustain the use of native plants, well adapted to stand environmental stress and anthropogenic disturbance; 3) avoid potentially invasive alien plants; 4) implement the cost-benefit effectiveness of MGRs in the medium- and long-term.
