Traditionally, taper equations are developed from measurements collected through a destructive sampling of trees. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) enables high levels of accuracy of individual tree parameters measurement avoiding tree felling. With this study, we wanted to assess the performance of two approaches to calibrate a taper function: using stem diameters extracted from TLS point clouds and measured at different tree heights with the traditional and usual forest instruments. We compared the performance of four taper equations built with data collected by TLS and traditional survey in a European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forests of mount Amiata (Tuscany Region, Italy). We computed the volume of stem sections 1.00 m long by integrating the most performing TLS-based taper equation and by the Huber, Smalian and cone formulas applied on the diameter and height values measured with the traditional field surveys. We conducted the analysis of error distribution in volume estimates computed integrating the most performing TLS-based taper function along the stem. We tested if the differences in the volume estimate of the two methods were significant. Schumacher and Hall (1933) equation was the most performing taper function both in case of using TLS and traditional surveyed data, being the TLS-based function more performant (rRMSE = 9.17% vs 6.90%). Its performance did not increase when diameter values were extracted from TLS point clouds with a higher frequency (i.e. 25.0 cm vs 1.00 m). By integrating the TLS-based Schumacher and Hall (1933) function, the sections with the highest error resulted from 5.00 to 7.00 m of stem height (i.e. RMSE from 14.72 to 19.14 dm3 and rRMSE from 13.00 to 17.76%). This study case represents the first attempts to develop a taper equation for European beech of mount Amiata using values of stem diameter and height extracted from the TLS point cloud. The results demon-strated that TLS produces the same stem volume estimates as traditional method avoiding falling trees.

Numerosi studi hanno dimostrato che l’incremento delle temperature medie stagionali e le variazioni nel regime stagionale delle precipitazioni influenzano direttamente la variabilità di crescita dei popolamenti forestali. Conoscere la risposta delle foreste alla variabilità del clima è propedeutica a calibrare gli interventi selvicolturali per garantire minore stress alle piante e una migliore efficienza ecosistemica. Il progetto LIFE AForClimate (LIFE15 CCA/IT/000089 - Adaption of FORest management to CLIMATE variability: an ecological approach) mira a fornire soluzioni concrete per realizzare una gestione forestale efficace nell’adattamento ai cambiamenti climatici e definire un metodo per la stima degli impatti della variabilità del clima sulla crescita dei boschi di faggio. Grazie a questo cambiamento d’approccio rispetto alla gestione forestale classica, AForClimate intende raggiungere i seguenti risultati: i) elaborare un modello previsionale dettagliato per la pianificazione della gestione forestale delle faggete che prenda in considerazione la variabilità climatica nel tempo, in modo da conservarne la resilienza, favorire la rinnovazione naturale e distribuire i prelievi legnosi in periodi con condizioni climatiche favorevoli all’accrescimento; ii) sviluppare uno schema di costante monitoraggio climatico per valutare, a fine progetto, gli impatti dell’approccio alla gestione in termini di crescita del bosco e di rinnovazione; iii) sviluppare ed implementare un prototipo di Sistema di Supporto alle Decisioni per pianificare la gestione forestale in uno scenario di cambiamenti climatici. Il progetto viene sviluppato in tre aree forestali e geografiche diverse rappresentative dei tre habitat di faggeta presenti nel territorio italiano secondo un gradiente latitudinale: faggete nord appenniniche senza impronta mediterranea (Mugello, Toscana), faggete appenniniche ad impronta mediterranea (Matese, Molise), faggete mediterranee con siccità estiva (Monti Nebrodi, Sicilia). Questo contributo oltre a presentare il progetto, ne riporta i risultati preliminari ottenuti nei primi due anni.

Previous research experiences have shown that climate variability can play a relevant role in forest planning and management within a climate change scenario. In forest planning and management, yield tables, site quality indices, age classes, and rates of growth are some of the most frequently used parameters and tools. However, these ‘traditional’ methods do not include the influence of climate variability on forest growth over time, although it is one of the main influencing factors in tree growth. Changes in climate determine changes in thermo-pluviometric regimes that often have a marked influence on forest growth trends. Forest biomass, resilience, and carbon sequestration may be damaged unless forest planning and management implement the relationships between climate variability and trends of tree growth. The absence of an approach that implements the relationships between climate variability and tree growth as an ordinary tool for forest planning and management can have significant negative effects on forest biomass, resilience and carbon sequestration. The project AForClimate (Adaption of FORest management to CLIMATE variability: an ecological approach - LIFE15 CCA/IT/000089) aims to adapt forest management to climate change by defining an effective method for estimating the impacts of climate variability on growth of the forest. In this, AForClimate aims to manage forests in order to preserve their resilience, promote their natural renewal and distribute the wood mass harvested over periods with climatic conditions favourable to growth. The project targets beech ecosystems given their economic and ecological importance at European level. In Europe there are about 15 million hectares of beech forests that grow mainly in mountain areas of central and southern Europe, from sea level up to 1,800 m altitude. The expected results of the project are: (i) adapt forest management to climate change in the project areas; (ii) develop a detailed forecasting model for forest management that takes into account climate variability over time; (iii) build a monitoring scheme to assess, at the end of the project, the impacts of the management approach in terms of forest growth and regeneration; (iv) elaborate a prototype of Decision Support System to plan forest management in a climate change scenario. The project feasibility will be demonstrated in three Italian regions (Molise, Sicily, and Tuscany) thanks to the support of three territorial partners responsible for management in their respective areas of competence: Molise Region, Sicily Region, and Mountain Union of the Mugello Municipalities

European beech (L.) forests have a long history of coppicing, but the majority of formerly managed coppices are currently under conversion to high forest. The long time required to achieve conversion requires a long-term perspective to fully understand the implication of the applied conversion practices. In this study, we showed results from a long-term (1992â2014) case-study comparing two management options (natural evolution andperiodic thinning) in a beech coppice in conversion to high forest. Leaf area index, litter production, radiation transmittance and growth efficiency taken as relevant stand descriptors, were estimated using both direct and indirect optical methods. Overall, results indicated that beech coppice showed positive and prompt responses to active conversion practices based on periodic medium-heavy thinning. A growth efficiency index showed that tree growth increased as the cutting intensity increased. Results from the case study supported the effectiveness of active conversion management from an economic (timber harvesting) and ecological (higher growth efficiency) point of view.Fagus sylvatica

Il programma LIFE è lo strumento finanziario dell'Unione europea che supporta i progetti ambientali e di conservazione della natura. I Paesi dell'UE possono beneficiare di questi progetti con quote assegnate ad ogni Paese. Fra questi, l'Italia è il paese che meglio riesce a gestire questo strumento, con ottimi tassi di successo tra progetti proposti e approvati (circa il 30% nel 2009) che genera anche un incremento della quota inizialmente assegnata del budget totale. A partire dal 2011, le proposte possono prevedere una piccola parte di ricerca ma, per la gran parte, i progetti sono applicativi e dimostrativi, nel campo delle politiche e governance ambientali, della protezione di natura e biodiversità e di informazione e comunicazione ambientale. Nonostante questo, i progetti Life stanno sempre più diventando un'importante fonte di finanziamento per gli Istituti di Ricerca e le Università. Tuttavia, il criterio preminente di "applicabilità" e dimostrazione propria di questo tipo di progetti limita le risorse che possono essere dedicate alla sperimentazione diminuendo, di conseguenza, le possibilità dei Beneficiari di produrre materiale e risultati che possano essere utilizzati anche per pubblicazioni di buon livello su riviste scientifiche. Sebbene le tematiche e le attività proposte nelle singole azioni del progetto debbano essere fra loro ben armonizzate, ci sono spesso difficoltà a far si che gli output principali del progetto e delle singole azioni possano essere pubblicati direttamente. Le pubblicazioni prodotte sono infatti spesso frutto di elaborazioni successive al termine del progetto non di rado integrate da ulteriori dati. Nel Progetto LIFE ManFor C.BD. "Managing forests for multiple purposes: carbon, biodiversity and socio-economic wellbeing" che prevede di confrontare opzioni di gestione forestale tradizionali con opzioni proposte dal progetto e finalizzate alla conservazione e aumento della biodiversità e del carbonio, il problema è stato affrontato nell'azione preparatoria cercando di redigere un protocollo integrato tra le varie azioni e con i vari partner del progetto. Nella redazione del protocollo è stata data grande importanza all'armonizzazione delle metodologie utilizzate da i vari partner e fra i due Paesi coinvolti (Italia e Slovenia) tenendo in considerazione il fatto che, per i rilievi di struttura forestale, si è cercato di attenersi il più possibile ai protocolli in uso nei rispettivi inventari forestali. Il protocollo contiene le misure di struttura forestale, il legno morto, i rilievi finalizzati alla quantificazione della biodiversità vegetale e animale e quelli per gli stock e l'assorbimento di carbonio. Nei rilievi effettuati da ogni azione del progetto si è perseguito lo scopo di produrre materiale statisticamente valido garantendo, unitamente alla precisione del rilievo, le necessarie ripetizioni per produrre risultati di valore scientifico. Si prevede anche di sottoporre il protocollo, anche per parti, ad una revisione indipendente al fine di ottenere eventuali suggerimenti per possibili miglioramenti. Nella relazione, verrà presentato l'approccio usato nel progetto ManFor C.BD. per giungere al protocollo integrato che verrà presentato nelle sue linee generali.
