The Narrative Approach to Informed Consent: Empowering Young Children's Rights and Meaningful Participation is a practical guide for researchers who want to engage young children in rights-based, participatory research. An examination of the datafication of family life—in particular, the construction of our children into data subjects.Our families are being turned into data, as the digital traces we leave are shared, sold, and commodified. Children are datafied even before birth, with pregnancy apps and social media postings, and then tracked through childhood with learning apps, smart home devices, and medical records. In Child Data Citizen, Veronica Barassi examines the construction of children into data subjects, describing how their personal information is collected, archived, sold, and aggregated into unique profiles that can follow them across a lifetime. Children today are the very first generation of citizens to be datafied from before birth, and Barassi points to critical implications for our democratic futures.Barassi draws on a three-year research project with parents in London and Los Angeles, which included the collection of fifty in-depth interviews, a digital ethnography of “sharenting” activities on social media by eight families over the course of eight months, and a two-year exploration of the datafication of her own family. She complements her ethnographic findings with a platform analysis of four social media platforms, ten health tracking apps, four home hubs, and four educational platforms, investigating the privacy policies, business models, and patent applications that enable the mining of children's data. Barassi considers the implications of building a society where data traces are made to speak for and about citizens across a lifetime. What should we do when we realize that the narratives that algorithms construct about individuals are inaccurate and biased?

Researching Children and Youth: Methodological Issues, Strategies, and Innovations, part of the Sociological Studies of Children and Youth series, seeks to fill a void in current publications directly addressing the problems and pitfalls that often accompany researching children and youth in today's society. Research about children and young people's participation and involvement in research is an emerging area of academic inquiry. Aries 1975, S. 45-65), und er faßt sein Anliegen zu den'Debatten über das Kind, die Familie und die Jugend, die inzwischen geführt wurden'(Aries 1975, S. 45), unter zwei Thesen zusammen. In frü­ herer Zeit war die Vorstellung vom Kind und Heranwachsenden nur schwach entwickelt, so seine erste These. Sobald das Kind nicht mehr hilfs­ bedürftig war, rechnete man es übergangslos den Erwachsenen zu; das Be­ wußtsein von einem Jugendalter existierte nicht. Die Sozialisation des Kin­ des wurde'von der Familie weder gewährleistet noch durch sie kontrolliert'(Aries 1975, S. 46). Statt dessen lernte das Kind, indem es in ein breiteres soziales Umfeld einbezogen wurde. In diesem Handbuch werden die bislang eher unverbunden nebeneinanderstehenden Bereiche der Kindheits- und Jugendforschung erstmals miteinander verknüpft und deren bisherige Forschungserträge bilanzierend zusammengefasst. Dabei werden die Ansätze und Ergebnisse der zentralen an der Kindheits- und Jugendforschung beteiligten Fachdisziplinen, der Erziehungswissenschaft, der Psychologie, der Soziologie u.a. berücksichtigt. She will be a thought in my mind, at most, an incessant worry. Yet even this is grudged—we professionals tell each other that we have to leave our work behind when we go home—don't take your work worries with you... (p. 85)This book calls for a re-thinking of practice and research with children in the helping professions. In the context of today's fast world with its requirement for order and precision, the practice of working with children is imbued with ethical dilemmas which practitioners may or may not be aware of. It is important for the practitioner to feel suspended in uncertainty before taking action. In terms of research, the complexity of what is explored is reflected in the complexity of the research method. In a parallel writing, this uncertainty is a central theme in practice through the narrative of three stories of the author's involvement with children referred for support. The book explores how uncertainty and anxiety can be turned to good use rather than being a debilitating force to the practising psychologist. In April 2009, an inspiring international conference was held at Bielefeld on the topic'Children and the Good Life: New Challenges for Research on Children.'The focus was on how we can define and measure a'good life'for children growing up in the modern world. This tied in with discussions on how convincing universalistic theories are, what research on children can contribute, and how children themselves can be integrated into the research process and debates on the'good life.'Discourses and the production of knowledge on the'good life'or'well-being'require a guiding idea or a theoretical frame. This frame can come from the feminist ethic of care or from the Human and Children's Rights Convention, from the idea of welfare, or from the Capability Approach.

Doing Children's Geographies provides a useful resource for all those embarking on research with young people.
