Abstract

286 p. The design of thin and multifunctional waterborne latexes for anticorrosion application has been carried out in this thesis. Poly(MMA-co-BA) waterborne latex (MB) with phosphated functionalities (provided by using a polymerizable phosphate surfactant) was synthetized in order to trigger the formation of a passive thin iron phosphate layer at the metal-coating surface during its application. In fact it was found that phosphate waterborne latex was able to phosphatize the steel surface when cast onto low carbon steel and dried under slow drying rate (T=23 °C and RH= 60%) leading to excellent anticorrosion protection in harsh conditions of salt spray chamber. In an attempt to increase the barrier properties of this initial waterborne phosphate containing latex, the incorporation of high hydrophobic perfluorooctyl acrylate (POA) into the polymer composition was targeted. However, despite the enhanced hydrophobicity and the presence of iron phosphate layer at the coating-substrate interface, the coating cast from PMB was not able to protect the metal substrate against corrosion in the harsh conditions present in the salt spray chamber. In order to overcome the poor anticorrosive performance of POA nanohybrid latexes containing ZnO nanoparticles and phosphate functionalities was prepared. Unfortunately, the encapsulation of ZnO nanoparticles produced just a slight enhancement of the corrosion protection and these results indicate that the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles is not enough to overcome the problem of the lack of coalescence of polymer particles observed for film cast from PMB latexes. The incorporation of hydrophobic Stearyl Acrylate into the latex composition was implemented as alternative and the synergic effect of enhanced barrier properties and substrate phosphatization allowed an enhancement of the corrosion protection with respect to the initial system based on MB. Finally, the incorporation of phosphated waterborne latexes (MB, SA40 and SA50) into commercial paint formulations for direct to metal (DTM) application provided paints with comparable anticorrosion properties to a commercial DMT paint but without the use of corrosion inhibitors. Abstract

A novel waterborne coating has been successfully designed by combining good barrier properties and a built-in ability to in situphosphatize low carbon steel substrates. The physical barrier protection was promoted by a homogeneous dispersion of crystalline nanodomains in the polymer matrix, which was achieved by the coalescence of polymer particles with core–shell morphology. The core consisted of semicrystalline polystearyl acrylate, PSA, and the shell consisted of a film forming MMA/BA copolymer. The in situphosphatization was provided by the incorporation of phosphate functionalities on the particle surface that were able to interact with the steel substrate during film formation. This combined functionality yielded films with excellent corrosion resistance properties as measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis of samples either immersed in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution or subjected to an aggressive salt spray chamber. Thus, films containing 40 wt % of PSA and 2 wt % of phosphate surfmer provided corrosion resistance over more than 800 h when exposed to harsh salt-spray chamber conditions.

Abstract

Research demonstrates that a subpopulation of replicating myocytes in adult heart possess properties of cardiac stem cells. Data indicate that they self-renew, clonogenic, and multipotent and produce myocytes, smooth muscle, and endothelial cells. These stem cells when injected into an ischemic heart are able to reconstitute well-differentiated myocardium.

Abstract

Among the cardiovascular pathologies, ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of congestive heart failure as well as permanent premature disabilities. Reperfusion of a previously ischemic heart is a standard clinical procedure. Even if beneficial, reperfusion triggers an inflammatory response that contributes to the acute extension of ischemic injury and later participates in the reparative processes of the damaged myocardium. Occlusion of a major coronary artery in small rodents, followed or not followed by reperfusion, has proven to be a good model to assess the relevance of pathophysiological processes and drug effects in the setting of myocardial ischemia. Models involving reperfusion appear to be particularly suitable to study the inflammatory response, which is much more marked than with permanent ischemia. Ischemia/reperfusion of the myocardium in wild-type and transgenic animals (mostly mice) allows the possibility of testing the vast array of mediators that orchestrate the sequelae of inflammation, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Abstract

Cardiac failure is a frequent cause of death in the aging human population. Telomere attrition occurs with age, and is proposed to be causal for the aging process. To determine whether telomere shortening leads to a cardiac phenotype, we studied heart function in the telomerase knockout mouse, Terc-/-. We studied Terc-/- mice at the second, G2, and fifth, G5, generation. Telomere shortening in G2 and G5 Terc-/- mice was coupled with attenuation in cardiac myocyte proliferation, increased apoptosis and cardiac myocyte hypertrophy. On a single-cell basis, telomere shortening was coincidental with increased expression of p53, indicating the presence of dysfunctional telomeres in cardiac myocytes from G5 Terc-/- mice. The impairment in cell division, the enhanced cardiac myocyte death and cellular hypertrophy, are concomitant with ventricular dilation, thinning of the wall and cardiac dysfunction. Thus, inhibition of cardiac myocyte replication provoked by telomere shortening, results in de-compensated eccentric hypertrophy and heart failure in mice.
