Hydrogen obtained from electrochemical water splitting is the most promising clean energy carrier, which is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Thus, the development of an efficient OER electrocatalyst using nonprecious 3d transition elements is desirable. Multielement synergistic effect and lattice oxygen oxidation are two well-known mechanisms to enhance the OER activity of catalysts. The latter is generally related to the high valence state of 3d transition elements leading to structural destabilization under the OER condition. We have found that Al doping in nanosheet Ni-Fe hydroxide exhibits 2-fold advantage: (1) a strong enhanced OER activity from 277 mV to 238 mV at 10 mA cm -2 as the Ni valence state increases from Ni 3.58+ to Ni 3.79+ observed from in situ X-ray absorption spectra. (2) Operational stability is strengthened, while weakness is expected since the increased Ni IV content with 3d 8 L 2 (L denotes O 2p hole) would lead to structural instability. This contradiction is attributed to a reduced lattice oxygen contribution to the OER upon Al doping, as verified through in situ Raman spectroscopy, while the enhanced OER activity is interpreted as an enormous gain in exchange energy of Fe IV -Ni IV , facilitated by their intersite hopping. This study reveals a mechanism of Fe-Ni synergy effect to enhance OER activity and simultaneously to strengthen operational stability by suppressing the contribution of lattice oxygen.

Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides (LLO) hold great promise as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their unique oxygen redox (OR) chemistry, which enables additional capacity. However, the LLOs face challenges related to the instability of their OR process due to the weak transition metal (TM)-oxygen bond, leading to oxygen loss and irreversible phase transition that results in severe capacity and voltage decay. Herein, a synergistic electronic regulation strategy of surface and interior structures to enhance oxygen stability is proposed. In the interior of the materials, the local electrons around TM and O atoms may be delocalized by surrounding Mo atoms, facilitating the formation of stronger TM─O bonds at high voltages. Besides, on the surface, the highly reactive O atoms with lone pairs of electrons are passivated by additional TM atoms, which provides a more stable TM─O framework. Hence, this strategy stabilizes the oxygen and hinders TM migration, which enhances the reversibility in structural evolution, leading to increased capacity and voltage retention. This work presents an efficient approach to enhance the performance of LLOs through surface-to-interior electronic structure modulation, while also contributing to a deeper understanding of their redox reaction., (© 2024 The Authors. A transition-metal oxide of PbCu 3 Mn 4 O 12 was prepared at 1523 K and 10 GPa. An A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite structure with the space group Im 3̅ is assigned for this compound. Based on bond-valence-sum calculations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the charge combination is determined to be PbCu 3 2+ Mn 4 4+ O 12 . Due to Cu 2+ (↑)-Mn 4+ (↓) antiferromagnetic coupling, a near-room-temperature ferrimagnetic phase transition is observed at approximately 287 K. PbCu 3 Mn 4 O 12 exhibits a semiconducting electric transport property with the energy band gap E g ≈ 0.2 eV. In addition, considerable low-field magnetoresistance effects are observed at lower temperatures. This study provides an intrinsic near-room-temperature ferrimagnetic semiconductor that exhibits potential applications in next-generation spintronic devices.

Microalgae, a group of photosynthetic microorganisms rich in diverse and novel bioactive metabolites, have been explored for the production of biofuels, high value-added compounds as food and feeds, and pharmaceutical chemicals as agents with therapeutic benefits. This article reviews the development of omics resources and genetic engineering techniques including gene transformation methodologies, mutagenesis, and genome-editing tools in microalgae biorefinery and wastewater treatment (WWT). The introduction of these enlisted techniques has simplified the understanding of complex metabolic pathways undergoing microalgal cells. The multiomics approach of the integrated omics datasets, big data analysis, and machine learning for the discovery of objective traits and genes responsible for metabolic pathways was reviewed. Recent advances and limitations of multiomics analysis and genetic bioengineering technology to facilitate the improvement of microalgae as the dual role of WWT and biorefinery feedstock production are discussed., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key half-reaction in many electrochemical transformations, and efficient electrocatalysts are critical to improve its kinetics which is typically sluggish due to its multielectron-transfer nature. Perovskite oxides are a popular category of OER catalysts, while their activity remains insufficient under the conventional adsorbate evolution reaction scheme where scaling relations limit activity enhancement. The lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) has been recently reported to overcome such scaling relations and boost the OER catalysis over several doped perovskite catalysts. However, direct evidence supporting the LOM participation is still very little because the doping strategy applied would introduce additional active sites that may mask the real reaction mechanism. Herein, a dopant-free, cation deficiency manipulation strategy to tailor the bulk diffusion properties of perovskites without affecting their surface properties is reported, providing a perfect platform for studying the contribution of LOM to OER catalysis. Further optimizing the A-site deficiency achieves a perovskite candidate with excellent intrinsic OER activity, which also demonstrates outstanding performance in rechargeable Zn-air batteries and water electrolyzers. Organic-molecular magnets based on a metal-organic framework with chemically tuned electronic and magnetic properties have been attracting tremendous attention due to their promising applications in molecular magnetic sensors, magnetic particle medicines, molecular spintronics, etc. Here, we investigated the magnetic behavior of a heterojunction comprising a ferromagnetic nickel (Ni) film and an organic semiconductor (OSC) 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) layer. Through the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), a photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), we found that the adsorption of F4-TCNQ on Cu(100)/Ni not only reverses the in-plane magnetization direction originally exhibited by the Ni layer but also results in enhanced magnetic ordering. Furthermore, the cyano group (CN) in adsorbed F4-TCNQ was found spin-polarized along with conspicuous charge transfer with Ni. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the experimentally found spin polarization originates from hybridization between the CN group's π orbitals and Ni's d band. These findings signify that the hybrid states at the organic-ferromagnet interface play a key role in tailoring the magnetic behavior of interfaces. For the case of the F4-TCNQ and Ni heterojunction reported here, interface coupling is an antiferromagnetic one.

Objective: To compare outcome after noncardiac surgery between HF patients with reduced versus preserved ejection fraction., Summary of Background Data: HF patients who undergo major noncardiac surgery have higher risks of morbidity and mortality compared to the general population. However, it is unclear whether HF subtypes confer different risk., Methods: This retrospective study included HF patients, 45 years or older, who underwent noncardiac surgery from January 1, 2010 to September 30, 2015 in the Nationwide Readmissions Database. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to provide adjusted rates of postoperative outcomes. Hospital-level clustering and Nationwide Readmissions Database sampling weights were applied to all models., Results: Of the weighted 296,057 HF patients [HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) 48.1%; HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) 51.9%] who underwent noncardiac surgery, 41.1% had cardiopulmonary complications, 55.7% had noncardiopulmonary complications and 5.4% died during hospitalization. Thirty-day readmission rates for the weighted 232,852 HF patients was 21.5%. The adjusted odds ratios of cardiopulmonary and noncardiopulmonary complications, in-hospital mortality and 30-day readmission for HFrEF compared to HFpEF patients were 1.01 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.99-1.04], 1.05 (95% CI, 1.02-1.07), 1.27 (95% CI, 1.21-1.34), and 1.08 (95% CI, 1.05-1.12), respectively., Conclusions: HFrEF patients have increased risks of noncardiopulmonary complications, mortality, and readmission after noncardiac surgery. These findings suggest that targeted perioperative care for HF subtypes may be crucial for the growing population of HF patients undergoing noncardiac surgery. A 4 H -type BaMnO 3 single crystal was prepared by combining the floating zone method with high-pressure treatment at 5 GPa and 1023 K. The crystal crystallizes to a hexagonal structure with space group P 6 3 / mmc and lattice parameters a = 5.63723(5) Å and c = 9.22355(8) Å. In this structure, face-sharing MnO 6 octahedral dimers connect with each other by corner O atoms along the c -axis direction, forming an -A-B-A-C-type 4 H arrangement. A long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition is found to occur at T N ≈ 263 K. When the synthesis pressure increases to 20 GPa, a new polymorphic phase is obtained. This higher-pressure phase still possesses the hexagonal P 6 3 / mmc symmetry, but the lattice parameters change to be a = 5.61349(2) Å and c = 13.66690(9) Å with a unit cell volume reduction of 2.05%. In this new phase, the c -axis MnO 6 dimers are separated by MnO 6 octahedral layers in the ab plane, forming an -A-B-C-A-C-B-type 6 H structure. The 6 H phase exhibits two long-range AFM orderings at T N1 ≈ 220 K and T N2 ≈ 25 K, respectively. The different magnetic properties are discussed on the basis of the detailed structural constitutions of 4 H - and 6 H -BaMnO 3 .

Objective: To evaluate the perioperative morbidity and mortality of patients with COVID-19 who undergo urgent and emergent surgery., Summary Background Data: Although COVID-19 infection is usually associated with mild disease, it can lead to severe respiratory complications. Little is known about the perioperative outcomes of patients with COVID-19., Methods: We examined patients who underwent urgent and emergent surgery at 2 hospitals in New York City from March 17 to April 15, 2020. Elective surgical procedures were cancelled throughout and routine, laboratory based COVID-19 screening was instituted on April 1. Mortality, complications, and admission to the intensive care unit were compared between patients with COVID-19 detected perioperatively and controls., Results: Among 468 subjects, 36 (7.7%) had confirmed COVID-19. Among those with COVID-19, 55.6% were detected preoperatively and 44.4% postoperatively. Before the routine preoperative COVID-19 laboratory screening, 7.7% of cases were diagnosed preoperatively compared to 65.2% after institution of screening (P = 0.0008). The perioperative mortality rate was 16.7% in those with COVID-19 compared to 1.4% in COVID-19 negative subjects [aRR = 9.29; 95% confidence interval (CI), 5.68-15.21]. Serious complications were identified in 58.3% of COVID-19 subjects versus 6.0% of controls (aRR = 7.02; 95%CI, 4.96-9.92). Cardiac arrest, sepsis/shock, respiratory failure, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and acute kidney injury were more common in those with COVID-19. The intensive care unit admission rate was 36.1% in those with COVID-19 compared to 16.4% of controls (aRR = 1.34; 95%CI, 0.86-2.09)., Conclusions: COVID-19 is associated with an increased risk for serious perioperative morbidity and mortality. Epitaxial CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO)/CoO bilayers were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition on flexible muscovite mica substrate. Samples with different CFO thicknesses were employed to study the phenomenon of exchange bias involving strongly anisotropic ferromagnet. Magnetic measurements exhibited great enhancement in the features of exchange bias. Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopies indicated that a new phase emerged within the CFO layer because of the cation charge redistribution in CFO layer under bending, which in turn gave rise to anomalous hysteresis loops exhibited in the bent bilayers. These results provide a fundamental understanding about the mechanisms of exchange bias prevailing in these bilayers and call attention to the implementation of spintronic devices using flexible heterostructures such as the present CFO/CoO bilayers.

Background: Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly around the world to become a global pandemic. There is limited data on the impact of COVID-19 among patients with cancer., Methods: A systematic review was performed to determine outcomes of adult patients with cancer affected by coronavirus infections, specifically SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. Studies were independently screened by two reviewers and assessed for quality and bias. Outcomes measured included study characteristics, cancer type, phase of care at the time of diagnosis, and clinical presentation. Morbidity and mortality outcomes were analyzed to assess the severity of infection as compared to the general population., Results: A total of 19 studies with 110 patients were included. Of these, 66.4% had COVID-19 infections, 32.7% MERS and only one patient with SARS. The majority of COVID-19 studies were based on studies in China. There was a 56.6% rate of a severe event, including ICU admission or requiring mechanical ventilation, with an overall 44.5% fatality rate., Conclusions: Patients with cancer with coronavirus infections may be more susceptible to higher morbidity and mortality.

We propose a theoretical model to investigate the magnetic properties of cobalt-doped ZnO (ZnO:Co) thin films qualitatively. The model was built on the dilute Co dopants in the host of ZnO forming the magnetic Co +2 ions and the energy level of the magnetic ions crossing the band edge of ZnO resulting in a magnetic interaction between the Co +2 spins and the spins of the electrons from the conduction band of ZnO. The mechanism of the ferromagnetism revealed in the studied system is proposed here to be induced not only by the mediated conducting electrons via spin interactions but also by the Coulomb excitations, arising from the electrons localized by the oxygen vacancies. This approach of including Coulomb excitation in the modified carrier-mediated model could explain well the magnetic properties of ZnO:Co and solves the drawback of the carrier-mediated model in interpreting the appearance of ferromagnetism in the insulating ZnO:Co. We propose that the Coulomb excitations induced by the electrons captured by the oxygen vacancies are an essential element in the magnetic ZnO, which reveals the fact that the bound magnetic polaron model without considering the Coulomb excitation is insufficient to describe the magnetic properties of ZnO.

Temperature-dependent X-ray absorption near-edge structures, X-ray linear dichroism (XLD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopic techniques were used to investigate the valence state, preferred orbital and local atomic structure that significantly affect the electrical and magnetic properties of a single crystal of YBaCuFeO 5 (YBCFO). An onset of increase of resistivity at ~180 K, followed by a rapid increase at/below 125 K, is observed. An antiferromagnetic (AFM)-like transition is close to the temperature at which the resistivity starts to increase in the ab-plane and is also observed with strong anisotropy between the ab-plane and the c-axis. The XLD spectra at the Fe L 3,2 -edge revealed a change in Fe 3d e g holes from the preferential [Formula: see text] orbital at high temperature (300-150 K) to the [Formula: see text] orbital at/below 125 K. The analysis of the Fe K-edge EXAFS data of YBCFO further revealed an unusual increase in the Debye-Waller factor of the nearest-neighbor Fe-O bond length at/below 125 K, suggesting phonon-softening behavior, resulting in the breaking of lattice symmetry, particularly in the ab-plane of Fe-related square pyramids. These findings demonstrate a close correlation between electrical resistivity and coupling of the preferred Fe 3d orbital with lattice distortion of a single crystal of YBCFO.

We report the influence of Mn dopant on magnetic properties of Zn 0.95 Mn 0.05 O (ZMO)/Al 2 O 3 (0 0 0 1) hetero-epitaxial systems grown by using pulsed-laser deposition. The room temperature (RT) intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) ordering verified by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectrum of Mn L 2,3 edges is ascribed to the substitutional Mn atoms in the Zn site of ZnO. Mn in ZMO has a tetrahedral local symmetry instead of the octahedral symmetry of MnO, after verifying the absence of the Mn-related impurities or clusters in ZMO epitaxial film by Mn K-edge and Zn K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy spectrum, as well as the analysis of long-range structural ordering on Renninger scan of forbidden (0 0 0 5) reflection in x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectrum. Comparison of x-ray absorption spectra of ZMO with those of ZnO epilayers at O K-, Zn K-, and L 3 -edges indicates that the substitution of the Zn site with Mn enhances the charge-transfer (CT) transition and the presence of Zn vacancies (V Zn ) also dominate the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum, implying that the formation of numerous V Zn defects plays an important role in activating FM interactions. The strong CT effect and the existence of high-density V Zn suggest that the intrinsic RT FM ordering of insulating ZMO is a result of the formation of the bound magnetic polarons (BMPs) that interact with each other via intermediate magnetic impurities.

Materials with high spin-polarization play an important role in the development of spintronics. Co-based Heusler compounds are a promising candidate for practical applications because of their high Curie temperature and tunable half-metallicity. However, it is a challenge to integrate Heusler compounds into thin film heterostructures because of the lack of control on crystallinity and chemical disorder, critical factors of novel behaviors. Here, muscovite is introduced as a growth substrate to fabricate epitaxial Co 2 MnGa films with mechanical flexibility. The feature of heteroepitaxy is evidenced by the results of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, high chemical ordering with superior properties is delivered according to the observation of large Hall conductivity (680 Ω -1 cm -1 ) and highly saturated magnetic moment (∼3.93 μ B /f.u.), matching well with bulk crystals. Furthermore, the excellence of magnetic and electrical properties is retained under the various mechanical bending conditions. Such a result suggests that the development of Co 2 MnGa/muscovite heteroepitaxy provides not only a pathway to the thin film heterostructure based on high-quality Heusler compounds but also a new aspect of spintronic applications on flexible substrates.

This study probes the temperature-dependent strain that is strongly correlated with the orbital and magnetic structures of epitaxial films of Nd 0.35 Sr 0.65 MnO 3 (NSMO) that are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition with two thicknesses, 17 (NS17) and 103 nm (NS103) on SrTiO 3 (STO) substrate. This investigation is probed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and absorption-based techniques, X-ray linear dichroism (XLD) and the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). XRD indicates a significant shift in the (004) peak position that is associated with larger strain in NS17 relative to that of NS103 at both 30 and 300 K. Experimental and atomic multiplet simulated temperature-dependent Mn L 3,2 -edge XLD results reveal that the stronger strain in a thinner NS17 film causes less splitting of Mn 3d e g state at low temperature, indicating an enhancement of orbital fluctuations in the band above the Fermi level. This greater Mn 3d orbital fluctuation can be the cause of both the enhanced ferromagnetism (FM) as a result of spin moments and the reduced Néel temperature of C-type antiferromagnetism (AFM) in NS17, leading to the FM coupling of the canted-antiferromagnetism (FM-cAFM) state in NSMO/STO epitaxial films at low temperature (T = 30 K). These findings are also confirmed by Mn L 3,2 -edge XMCD measurements.

Background: Skin physiology measurement is receiving more attention for detecting vasculopathy in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is a widely used physiological measurement to assess cutaneous microcirculation. However, findings of LDF may be subtle during early stage of microangiopathy in SSc., Objective: We hypothesized that cold stress test combined with LDF could detect early-stage microangiopathy in patients with SSc., Methods: A 67-year-old male came with multiple ulcerations on his fingers for one year. After excluding diseases such as diabetes mellitus-related peripheral arterial occlusive disease and smoking-related Buerger's disease, the diagnosis of SSc was made according to the 2013 ACR/EULAR criteria. We performed LDF and angiography for a patient with SSc and compared the results., Results: Although occlusions of right ulnar and digital arteries were obvious in angiography, the baseline skin temperature and perfusion unit on right fingers remained within normal limits. While the microcirculatory abnormalities measured by LDF alone are subtle, LDF combined with cold stress test detected a significant slow recovery of skin blood flow 40 minutes after cold immersion., Conclusions: In conclusion, there may be discordance between macrovasculopathy and baseline microcirculatory blood flow in SSc. In such a case, cold immersion test is essential to measure the dynamic change and slow recovery of blood flow.

Superlattices are of great importance due to their potential as new materials genome to synthesize new functional materials. Thus, tuning of the ground state of superlattices is crucial to further control their physical properties. In this study, superlattices (SLs) consisting of alternating layers of SrRuO 3 (SRO) (5 nm) and La 0.5 Ca 0.5 MnO 3 (LCMO) (5 nm) are epitaxially grown on SrTiO 3 (STO) and LaAlO 3 (LAO) substrates with 10-unit-cell periods. A variation in the substrate-induced-strain for this choice of SLs triggers observation of remarkable properties, such as magnetic anisotropy and large magnetic hysteresis. The strain states experienced by LCMO and SRO in these SLs result in strong ferromagnetic interlayer coupling and weak antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling at low temperatures in SLs of LCMO-SRO/STO and a strong antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling in SLs of LCMO-SRO/LAO. Besides, a large magnetic hysteresis resulting from the predominant magnetic anisotropy of SRO together with the strength of magnetic coupling is observed in SLs of LCMO-SRO/LAO along the out-of-plane direction of the LAO substrate. These four different magnetic behaviors along four different directions of substrate orientations are interpreted in terms of preferential orbital occupation and competing magnetic exchange coupling together with magnetic anisotropy. This study demonstrates the subtleties in controlling the strength of magnetic coupling at the interface and stands as a model system to realize fascinating magnetic phenomena in layer-by-layer hetero-epitaxial oxide films., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

This investigation reports on anisotropy in the magnetic interaction, lattice-orbital coupling and degree of phonon softening in single crystal Ni 3 TeO 6 (NTO) using temperature- and polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopic techniques. The magnetic field-cooled and zero-field-cooled measurements and temperature-dependent Ni L 3,2 -edge X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra of NTO reveal a weak Ni-Ni ferromagnetic interaction close to ~60 K (T SO : temperature of the onset of spin ordering) with a net alignment of Ni spins (the uncompensated components of the Ni moments) along the crystallographic c-axis, which is absent from the ab-plane. Below the Néel temperature, T N ~ 52 K, NTO is stable in the antiferromagnetic state with its spin axis parallel to the c-axis. The Ni L 3,2 -edge X-ray linear dichroism results indicate that above T SO , the Ni 3d e g electrons preferentially occupy the out-of-plane 3d 3z 2 -r 2 orbitals and switch to the in-plane 3d x 2 -y 2 orbitals below T SO . The inherent distortion of the NiO 6 octahedra and anisotropic nearest-neighbor Ni-O bond lengths between the c-axis and the ab-plane of NTO, followed by anomalous Debye-Waller factors and orbital-lattice in conjunction with spin-phonon couplings, stabilize the occupied out-of-plane (3d 3z 2 -r 2 ) and in-plane (3d x 2 -y 2 ) Ni e g orbitals above and below T SO , respectively.

Introduction: In most Asian countries, stroke is one of the major causes of mortality. A stroke event is life-changing for stroke survivors, which results in either mortality or disability. Therefore, this study comprehensively focuses on prevalence, risk factors, and secondary prevention for stroke recurrence identified in South, East, and Southeast Asian countries., Methods: This scoping review uses the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley. A comprehensive search of academic journals (English) on this topic published from 2007 to 2017 was conducted. A total of 22 studies were selected from 585 studies screened from the electronic databases., Results: First-year stroke recurrence rates are in the range of 2.2% to 25.4%. Besides that, modifiable risk factors are significantly associated with pathophysiological factors (hypertension, ankle-brachial pressure index, atherogenic dyslipidaemia, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, and atrial fibrillation) and lifestyle factors (obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and high salt intake). Furthermore, age, previous history of cerebrovascular events, and stroke subtype are also significant influence risk factors for recurrence. A strategic secondary prevention method for recurrent stroke is health education along with managing risk factors through a combination of appropriate lifestyle intervention and pharmacological therapy., Conclusion: To prevent recurrent stroke, health intervention should be geared towards changing lifestyle to embody a healthier approach to life. This is of great importance to public health and stroke survivors' quality of life.

People in southern Taiwan experienced two major dengue outbreaks in 2014 and 2015. The mortality and clinical features were very different between these 2 years. Dengue virus serotype 1 (DENV-1) caused epidemic outbreak in 2014 and DENV-2 was predominant in 2015. The characteristics of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases in the 2 years was analyzed. We conducted a retrospective chart review to analyze the clinical and laboratory features of 206 adult patients with DHF in southern Taiwan in 2014 and 2015. The mortality rate of DHF cases in 2015 was higher than that of cases in 2014 (38.7% versus 12.4%, P < 0.0001). Compared with cases in 2014, DHF cases in 2015 had more complications, such as gastrointestinal bleeding (78.5% versus 61.9%, P = 0.01), severe hepatitis (30.1% versus 8%, P < 0.0001), and myocarditis (14% versus 0.9%, P < 0.0001). Among the mortality cases, diabetes, chronic renal failure, proton-pump inhibitors using, platelet transfusion, and Charlson comorbidity index score (Charlson score) were also higher in 2015. Multivariate analysis for the mortality cases revealed that the risk factors were Charlson score ≥ 5 ( P = 0.02, odds ratio [OR] = 4.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.244-13.307), severe hepatitis ( P < 0.0001, OR = 11.97, 95% CI = 3.831-37.396), and acute renal failure ( P < 0.0001, OR = 98.76, 95% CI = 10.847-899.22). DHF cases in 2015 had higher mortality and more complications, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, severe hepatitis, and myocarditis, than in 2014 in southern Taiwan. In the 2-year DHF case series, Charlson score ≥ 5, severe hepatitis, and acute renal failure were independent significant variables for mortality.

The pressure-response of the Co-O bond lengths and the spin state of Co ions in a hybrid 3d-5d solid-state oxide Sr 2 Co 0.5 Ir 0.5 O 4 with a layered K 2 NiF 4 -type structure was studied by using hard X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies. The Co-K and the Ir-L 3 X-ray absorption spectra demonstrate that the Ir 5+ and the Co 3+ valence states at ambient conditions are not affected by pressure. The Co Kβ emission spectra, on the other hand, revealed a gradual spin state transition of Co 3+ ions from a high-spin (S = 2) state at ambient pressure to a complete low-spin state (S = 0) at 40 GPa without crossing the intermediate spin state (S = 1). This can be well understood from our calculated phase diagram in which we consider the energies of the low spin, intermediate spin and high spin states of Co 3+ ions as a function of the anisotropic distortion of the octahedral local coordination in the layered oxide. We infer that a short in-plane Co-O bond length (<1.90 Å) as well as a very large ratio of Co-O apex /Co-O in-plane is needed to stabilize the IS Co 3+ , a situation which is rarely met in reality.

About 400 million people every year are estimated to contract dengue virus infection, which causes prolonged morbidity and sometimes mortality. Interleukin (IL)-28 and IL-29 are relatively newly discovered cytokines and play an important role in our immune defense against pathogens, especially for viral infection. In the present study, we investigated serum IL-28 and IL-29 expression and the relationship to clinical and laboratory parameters in patients with dengue virus infection. Adult patients with dengue (n = 45) and control group (n = 24) were included prospectively. Clinical symptoms and laboratory data were collected from every patient. We investigated IL-28 and IL-29 levels in serum by ELISA. The concentrations of serum IL-28 and IL-29 were significantly higher in subjects with dengue when compared to those of control group. The patients with higher serum IL-28 and IL-29 levels had significantly lower ALAT and peripheral blood neutrophil percentage, but higher peripheral platelet, total white blood cell (WBC), monocyte, and lymphocyte counts. Patients with higher serum IL-28 and IL-29 levels also had more flu-like symptoms, but less vomiting. Increased level of IL-28 and IL-29 was associated with better liver function, platelet and WBC numbers and clinical symptom in subjects with dengue and could potentially serve as a protective marker.

The local electronic and atomic structures of the high-quality single crystal of SrFeO 3-δ (δ~0.19) were studied using temperature-dependent x-ray absorption and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) to investigate the origin of anisotropic resistivity in the ab-plane and along the c-axis close to the region of thermal hysteresis (near temperature for susceptibility maximum, T m ~78 K). All experiments herein were conducted during warming and cooling processes. The Fe L 3,2 -edge X-ray linear dichroism results show that during cooling from room temperature to below the transition temperature, the unoccupied Fe 3d e g states remain in persistently out-of-plane 3d 3z 2 -r 2 orbitals. In contrast, in the warming process below the transition temperature, they change from 3d 3z 2 -r 2 to in-plane 3d x 2 -y 2 orbitals. The nearest-neighbor (NN) Fe-O bond lengths also exhibit anisotropic behavior in the ab-plane and along the c-axis below T m . The anisotropic NN Fe-O bond lengths and Debye-Waller factors stabilize the in-plane Fe 3d x 2 -y 2 and out-of-plane 3d 3z 2 -r 2 orbitals during warming and cooling, respectively. Additionally, a VB-PES study further confirms that a relative band gap opens at low temperature in both the ab-plane and along the c-axis, providing the clear evidence of the charge-density-wave nature of SrFeO 3-δ (δ~0.19) single crystal.

A novel artificially created MnO 2 monolayer system is demonstrated in atomically controlled epitaxial perovskite heterostructures. With careful design of different electrostatic boundary conditions, a magnetic transition as well as a metal-insulator transition of the MnO 2 monolayer is unveiled, providing a fundamental understanding of dimensionality-confined strongly correlated electron systems and a direction to design new electronic devices., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The electronic structure and magnetic properties of SrMn0.5Fe0.5O3 powder and films grown on (1 0 0)-SrTiO3 (STO) and (1 0 0)-LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) were investigated by temperature dependent magnetization and soft x-ray absorption. The results exhibit characteristics of 3d (5) Fe(3+), [Formula: see text], and 3d (3)  +  3d (4) [Formula: see text] Mn(4+) at room temperature in all samples. However, the features of 3d (5) Fe(3+) and 3d (3) Mn(4+) increased significantly for SMFO/LAO at 35 K, which also displayed substantial competition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic order well-above the Néel temperature of SrFeO3 (T N ~ 134 K). We attributed this to being caused by charge disproportionation resulting from ligand-hole localization, which is more favorable to take place when the sample is under compressive strain.

Magnetic and multiferroic nanocomposites with two distinct phases have been a topic of intense research for their profound potential applications in the field of spintronics. In addition to growing high-quality phase separated heteroepitaxial nanocomposites, the strain engineering that is conducive to enhance the tunability of material properties, in general, and the magnetic properties, in particular, is of utmost importance in exploring new possibilities. Here, we investigated the magneto-structural coupling between antiferromagnetic BiFeO3 (BFO) and ferrimagnetic CoFe2O4 (CFO) in self-assembled vertically aligned nanocomposites grown on LaAlO3 (LAO) and SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. We found that BFO exhibits tetragonal (T) and rhombohedral (R) structures as the stable phases and CFO has high magnetocrystalline anisotropy even in the form of nanocomposites. The temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetizations of T&#95;BFO-CFO/LAO and R&#95;BFO-CFO/STO nanocomposites primarily demonstrate the magnetoelastic coupling between these variants.

Magnetic refrigeration, resulting from the magnetocaloric effect of a material around the magnetic phase-transition temperature, is a topic of great interest as it is considered to be an alternate energy solution to conventional vapor-compression refrigeration. The viability of a magnetic refrigeration system for magnetic cooling can be tested by exploiting materials in various forms, from bulk to nanostrucutres. In this study, magnetocaloric properties of self-assembled Mn3O4-La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 nanocomposites, with varying doping concentrations of Mn3O4 in the form of nanocrystals embedded in the La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 matrix, are investigated. The temperatures corresponding to the paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transitions are higher, and the values of change in magnetic entropy under a magnetic field of 2 T show an enhancement (highest being ∼130%) for the nanocomposites with low doping concentrations of Mn3O4, compared to that of pure La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 thin films. Relative cooling power remain close to those of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. The enhanced magnetic phase-transition temperature and magnetocaloric effect are interpreted and evidenced in the framework of interfacial coupling between Mn3O4 and La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. This work demonstrates the potentiality of self-assembled nanostructures for magnetic cooling near room temperature under low magnetic fields.

Predicting and understanding the cation distribution in spinels has been one of the most interesting problems in materials science. The present work investigates the effect of cation redistribution on the structural, electrical, optical and magnetic properties of mixed-valent inverse spinel NiCo2O4(NCO) thin films. It is observed that the films grown at low temperatures (T < 400 °C) exhibit metallic behavior while that grown at higher temperatures (T > 400 °C) are insulators with lower ferrimagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition temperature. So far, n-type Fe3O4 has been used as a conducting layer for the spinel thin films based devices and the search for a p-type counterpart still remains elusive. The inherent coexistence and coupling of ferrimagnetic order and the metallic nature in p-type NCO makes it a promising candidate for spintronic devices. Detailed X-ray Absorption and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism studies revealed a strong correlation between the mixed-valent cation distribution and the resulting ferrimagnetic-metallic/insulating behavior. Our study clearly demonstrates that it is the concentration of Ni(3+)ions and the Ni(3+)-O(2-)Ni(2+) double exchange interaction that is crucial in dictating the metallic behavior in NCO ferrimagnet. The metal-insulator and the associated magnetic order-disorder transitions can be tuned by the degree of cation site disorder via growth conditions.

Epitaxial core-shell CoO-CoFe2 O4 nanocrystals are fabricated by using pulsed laser deposition with the aid of melted material (Bi2 O3 ) addition and suitable lattice mismatch provided by substrates (SrTiO3 ). Well aligned orientations among nanocrystals and reversible core-shell sequence reveal tunable magnetic anisotropy. During the last 20 years, beamline BL08B has been upgraded step by step from a photon beam-position monitor (BPM) to a testing beamline and a single-grating beamline that enables experiments to record X-ray photo-emission spectra (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) for research in solar physics, organic semiconductor materials and spinel oxides, with soft X-ray photon energies in the range 300-1000 eV. Demands for photon energy to extend to the extreme ultraviolet region for applications in nano-fabrication and topological thin films are increasing. The basic spherical-grating monochromator beamline was again upgraded by adding a second grating that delivers photons of energy from 80 to 420 eV. Four end-stations were designed for experiments with XPS, XAS, interstellar photoprocess systems (IPS) and extreme-ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) in the scheduled beam time. The data from these experiments show a large count rate in core levels probed and excellent statistics on background normalization in the L-edge adsorption spectrum.

The crystal and magnetic structures of brownmillerite-like Sr(2)Co(1.2)Ga(0.8)O(5) with a stable Co(3+) oxidation state at both octahedral and tetrahedral sites are refined using neutron powder diffraction data collected at 2 K (S.G. Icmm, a = 5.6148(6) Å, b = 15.702(2) Å, c = 5.4543(6) Å; R(wp) = 0.0339, R(p) = 0.0443, χ(2) = 0.775). The very large tetragonal distortion of CoO(6) octahedra (1.9591(4) Å for Co-O(eq) and 2.257(6) Å for Co-O(ax)) could be beneficial for the stabilization of the long-sought intermediate-spin state of Co(3+) in perovskite-type oxides. However, the large magnetic moment of octahedral Co(3+) (3.82(7)μ(B)) indicates the conventional high-spin state of Co(3+) ions, which is further supported by the results of a combined theoretical and experimental soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy study at the Co-L(2,3) edges on Sr(2)Co(1.2)Ga(0.8)O(5). A high-spin ground state of Co(3+) in Sr(2)Co(1.2)Ga(0.8)O(5) resulted in much lower in comparison with a LaCoO(3) linear thermal expansion coefficient of 13.1 ppm K(-1) (298-1073 K) determined from high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction data collected in air.

The relationship between external exposure and internal doses of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has not been established for people living in industrial areas. This study was carried out to estimate the relationship between particle-phase PAH exposure and urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) levels among the adults living near a large petrochemical complex in Mailiao, Taiwan. We measured urinary 1-OHP in 781 residents above 35 years old and PM2.5 PAHs within a 20-km radius downwind from the petrochemical complex. Urinary 1-OHP was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography, while 16 ambient particle-phase PAHs were measured by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. External exposures to individual PAHs at each study subject's address were estimated by kriging interpolation from air sampling results and regressed against the subjects' urinary 1-OHP levels, adjusting for confounding factors. The study population's urinary 1-OHP levels ranged from 0.001 to 3.005 μmol/mol-creatinine with significantly higher levels for females, grilled food consumers, and residents living close to roads. All 16 particle-phase PAHs were present in the study area with total PAH concentrations ranging from 0.111 to 1.982 ng/m(3). The spatial distribution of 4- and 5-ring PAHs identified high-concentration hotspots close to the complex in Mailiao. The multiple regression models showed that the adults' urinary 1-OHP levels were significantly correlated with 5 out of the 16 PAHs, including benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and dibenzo[a,h]anthracene; a 0.01 ng/m(3) increase in the concentration of these 5 PAHs at the study subjects' addresses was associated with a 20% elevation in urinary 1-OHP levels (μg/g-creatinine). Emissions from a petrochemical complex can elevate particle-phase PAH concentrations in surrounding areas and increase the urinary 1-OHP levels of adults living nearby., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Mesocrystal, a new class of crystals as compared to conventional and well-known single crystals and polycrystalline systems, has captured significant attention in the past decade. Recent studies have been focused on the advance of synthesis mechanisms as well as the potential on device applications. In order to create further opportunities upon functional mesocrystals, we fabricated a self-assembled nanocomposite composed of magnetic CoFe2O4 mesocrystal in Sr-doped manganites. This combination exhibits intriguing structural and magnetic tunabilities. Furthermore, the antiferromagnetic coupling of the mesocrystal and matrix has induced an additional magnetic perturbation to spin-polarized electrons, resulting in a significantly enhanced magnetoresistance in the nanocomposite. Our work demonstrates a new thought toward the enhancement of intrinsic functionalities assisted by mesocrystals and advanced design of novel mesocrystal-embedded nanocomposites.

Green sulfur bacteria, which live in extremely low-light environments, use chlorosomes to harvest light. A chlorosome is the most efficient, and arguably the simplest, light-harvesting antenna complex, which contains hundreds of thousands of densely packed bacteriochlorophylls (BChls). To harvest light efficiently, BChls in a chlorosome form supramolecular aggregates; thus, it is of great interest to determine the organization of the BChls in a chlorosome. In this study, we conducted a (13)C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and Mg K-edge X-ray absorption analysis of chlorosomes from wild-type Chlorobaculum tepidum. The X-ray absorption results indicated that the coordination number of the Mg in the chlorosome must be >4, providing evidence that electrostatic interactions formed between the Mg of a BChl and the carbonyl group or the hydroxyl group of the neighboring BChl molecule. According to the intermolecular distance constraints obtained on the basis of (13)C homonuclear dipolar correlation spectroscopy, we determined that the molecular assembly of BChls is dimer-based and that the hydrogen bonds among the BChls are less extensive than commonly presumed because of the twist in the orientation of the BChl dimers. This paper also reports the first (13)C homonuclear correlation spectrum acquired for carotenoids and lipids-which are minor, but crucial, components of chlorosomes-extracted from wild-type Cba. tepidum.

The complex metal oxide SrCo0.5Ru0.5O(3-δ) possesses a slightly distorted perovskite crystal structure. Its insulating nature infers a well-defined charge distribution, and the six-fold coordinated transition metals have the oxidation states +5 for ruthenium and +3 for cobalt as observed by X-ray spectroscopy. We have discovered that Co(3+) ion is purely high-spin at room temperature, which is unique for a Co(3+) in an octahedral oxygen surrounding. We attribute this to the crystal field interaction being weaker than the Hund's-rule exchange due to a relatively large mean Co-O distances of 1.98(2) Å, as obtained by EXAFS and X-ray diffraction experiments. A gradual high-to-low spin state transition is completed by applying high hydrostatic pressure of up to 40 GPa. Across this spin state transition, the Co Kβ emission spectra can be fully explained by a weighted sum of the high-spin and low-spin spectra. Thereby is the much debated intermediate spin state of Co(3+) absent in this material. These results allow us to draw an energy diagram depicting relative stabilities of the high-, intermediate-, and low-spin states as functions of the metal-oxygen bond length for a Co(3+) ion in an octahedral coordination.

Background: Psoriasis is an important systemic inflammatory disease that often leads to severe vascular diseases. This study was launched to determine if joint involvement affects incidence of vascular comorbidities in psoriatic patients. In addition, potential vasculo-protective effects of methotrexate in psoriatic patients were also evaluated., Method: A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Taiwanese National Health Insurance database spanning from 1996 to 2006. Accordingly, 7648 and 284 psoriatic patients without or with arthritis, respectively, were identified. To ensure the temporal relationship between different events, those with date of first diagnosis psoriasis during the year of 1996 were excluded from subsequent analyses. In addition, those with diagnosis of cerebrovascular or cardiovascular diseases prior to onset of psoriasis were also excluded from relevant subsequent analyses., Result: Taking psoriatic patients without arthritis as the referent group, the hazard ratio for incident cerebrovascular disease was 1.82 (95% CI = 1.17-2.82) for psoriatic patient with arthritis. In addition, psoriatic patients without arthritis who had methotrexate treatment showed reduced risks for incident cerebrovascular disease as compared with those with no arthritis and had received no methotrexate/retinoid treatment. Similar analyses were performed on cardiovascular diseases, and equivalent results were obtained., Conclusion: Our study indicated that arthritis is a potential determinant for psoriatic patients in terms of incident vascular comorbidities. In addition, methotrexate treatment may be associated with reduced risks for development of severe vascular diseases in psoriatic patients without arthritis. The magnetic properties of a Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As bilayer epitaxied on GaAs (001) are studied both experimentally and theoretically. Unlike the common antiferromagnetic interfacial interaction existing in most ferromagnet-magnetic semiconductor bilayers, a ferromagnetic interfacial interaction in the Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As bilayer is observed from measurements of magnetic hysteresis and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The Mn ions in a 1.36 nm thick (Ga,Mn)As layer remain spin polarized up to 400 K due to the magnetic proximity effect. The minor loops of the Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As bilayer shift with a small ferromagnetic interaction field of +24 Oe and -23 Oe at 15 K. The observed ferromagnetic interfacial coupling is supported by ab initio density functional calculations. These findings may provide a viable pathway for designing room-temperature semiconductor spintronic devices through magnetic proximity effect.

In the past decade, self-assembled vertical nano-heterostructures have drawn considerable attention because a high interface-to-volume ratio can be used to tailor or create functionalities. We have systematically investigated the magnetic properties of oxide heterostructures consisting of the CoFe2O4 nanopillars embedded in the BiFeO3 matrix using macroscopic magnetization measurements and element-selective soft X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Co- and Fe-L2,3 edge. The magnetization and XMCD data show that the total ordered magnetic moment of Co(2+) in CoFe2O4-BiFeO3 nano-heterostructures is strongly enhanced. This study clearly indicates that the high interface-to-volume ratio vertical nanostructure creates a strong ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic magnetic coupling via an interface. Furthermore, the magnetic coupling can be tuned in the multiferroic-ferrimagnetic self-assembled heterostructures by controlling the spacing between nanopillars.

Idiopathic pure sudomotor failure (IPSF) is a subgroup of acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis, which is characterized by early age of onset, acute or sudden onset, concomitant sharp pain or cholinergic urticaria over the entire body, absence of autonomic dysfunction other than generalized anhidrosis, raised serum IgE level, and marked response to steroid. The aetiology of IPSF is still not well understood, but is thought to be caused by interference in cholinergic transmission in the eccrine glands of skin. IPSF after viral infection has rarely been reported in the literature. We describe a patient who developed generalized anhidrosis and cholinergic urticaria accompanied by heat intolerance after infectious mononucleosis infection. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of methotrexate and retinoid on risks for developing cerebrovascular disease among psoriatic patients. A population-based nested case-control study was conducted using the Taiwanese National Health Insurance database. Cox proportional hazards models were adopted. The hazard ratio (HR) of newly developed cerebrovascular disease was 1.28 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.162-1.413; p < 0.0001) for psoriatic vs. non-psoriatic subjects. In terms of the effects of methotrexate or retinoid on the occurrence of cerebrovascular disease, a significant protection effect (HR = 0.50; 95% CI = 0.27-0.92; p = 0.0264) was found for patients with methotrexate prescription. Retinoid prescription showed no protective effect. Further analyses revealed that a low cumulative methotrexate dose is associated with significant protective effect (HR = 0.53; 95% CI = 0.28-1.00; p = 0.0486) while a high cumulative dose was not (HR 0.80; 95% CI = 0.11-5.68; p = 0.8214). These results suggest that psoriatic patients receiving low-dose methotrexate treatment may have reduced risk for developing cerebrovascular disease. Further prospective study should be performed to validate the vasculoprotective effect of this treatment strategy.

We addressed the so-far unresolved issue concerning the Co valence in the superconducting bilayer hydrated Na(x)CoO(2) · yH(2)O (x∼0.35, y∼1.3) using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co-L(2,3) and O-K edges. We find that the valence state of the Co lies in a narrow range from +3.3 to +3.4 for all studied Na(x)CoO(2) · yH(2)O samples and their deuterated analogue with T(c)'s ranging from 3.8 to 4.7 K. These valence values are far from the often claimed +3.7, the number based on the Na content only. We propose to modify the phase diagram accordingly, where the basic electronic structure of the superconducting phase is very close to that of the Na(0.7)CoO(2) system, suggesting that the presence of in-plane spin fluctuations could play an important role for the superconductivity.

As indicated in the Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines, short-acting β2-adrenoreceptor agonists (SABAs) are important relievers in asthma exacerbation. Interferon γ-inducible protein (IP)-10/CXCL 10 is a T-helper type 1 (Th1) cell-related chemokine which is important in the recruitment of Th1 cells involved in host immune defense against intracellular pathogens such as viral infection. Regulated on activation, normal T expressed and secreted (RANTES)/CCL 5 is a chemokine which plays a role in attractant of eosinophils, mast cells, and basophils toward the site of allergic inflammation. Bronchial epithelial cells are first-line barriers against pathogen invasion. However, whether SABAs have regulatory effects on the expression of IP-10 and RANTES in bronchial epithelial cells is unknown. BEAS-2B cells, the human bronchial epithelial cell lines, were pretreated with procaterol (one of the SABAs) or dibutyryl-cAMP (a cyclic AMP analog) at different doses for 1 h and then stimulated with poly I:C (10 μg/mL). Supernatants were collected 12 and 24 h after poly I:C stimulation to determine the concentrations of IP-10 and RANTES by ELISA. In some cases, the cells were pretreated with selective β2-adrenoreceptor antagonist, ICI-118551, 30 min before procaterol treatment. To investigate the intracellular signaling, the cells were pretreated with mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitors and a NF-κB inhibitor 30 min before procaterol treatment. Western blot was also used to explore the intracellular signaling. Procaterol significantly suppressed poly I:C-induced IP-10 and RANTES in BEAS-2B cells in a dose-dependent manner. ICI-118551, a selective β2-adrenoreceptor antagonist, could significantly reverse the suppressive effects. Dibutyryl-cAMP could confer the similar effects of procaterol on poly I:C-induced IP-10 and RANTES expression. Data of Western blot revealed that poly I:C-induced p-ERK, p-JNK, and pp38 expression, but not pp65, were suppressed by procaterol. SABAs could suppress poly I:C-induced IP-10 and RANTES expression in bronchial epithelial cells, at least in part, via β2-adrenoreceptor-cAMP and MAPK-ERK, JNK, and p38 pathways.

Short-acting β2-adrenoreceptor agonist (SABA) is the major asthma reliever as indicated in the GINA guidelines. Regulated on activation, normal T expressed and secreted (RANTES) is a chemokine that attracts eosinophils, mast cells, and basophils toward site of allergic inflammation. Interferon γ-inducible protein (IP)-10 is a Th1-related chemokine that is also important in asthmatic inflammation and also involved in our immune defense against pathogens. Bronchial epithelial cells are first-line barrier against invasive pathogen and also have immunomodulatory function. However, whether albuterol and fenoterol (two SABAs) have modulatory effects on RANTES and IP-10 expression in bronchial epithelial cells is unknown. The human bronchial epithelial cell lines, BEAS-2B cells, were pre-treated with different concentrations of albuterol, fenoterol or dibutyryl-cAMP (a cyclic AMP analog) before polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) stimulation. In some condition, BEAS-2B cells were pre-treated with ICI-118551, a selective β2-adrenoreceptor antagonist, 30 min before albuterol or fenoterol treatment. The levels of RANTES and IP-10 were measured by ELISA. Intracellular signaling was investigated using cAMP assay, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor, nuclear factor (NF)-κB inhibitor, and western blot. Albuterol and fenoterol suppressed poly I:C-induced RANTES and IP-10 expression of BEAS-2B cells. ICI-118551 could partly reverse the suppressive effects of albuterol and fenoterol on RANTES and IP-10 expression. Albuterol and fenoterol increased intracellular cAMP levels. Dibutyryl-cAMP conferred the similar effects of albuterol and fenoterol. Western blot revealed that albuterol suppressed p-ERK, p-JNK and pp38, and also their associated kinase expression. Albuterol had no effect on pp65 expression. Albuterol and fenoterol could suppress poly I:C-induced RANTES and IP-10 expression in human bronchial epithelial cells via at least partly the β2-adrenoreceptor-cAMP and the MAPK pathways, implicating that albuterol and fenoterol could exert anti-inflammatory effect and benefit asthmatic patients by suppressing RANTES and IP-10 expression. Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) in ethnic Chinese children., Materials and Methods: We reviewed the National Health Insurance claims database and analyzed data from children less than one year of age who had been diagnosed with IHPS (ICD-9-CM 750.5) and had undergone pyloromyotomy (ICD-9-CM 43.3). We analyzed the incidence, gender, age at diagnosis, length of hospital stay, seasonal variation and cost of IHPS from data collected between January 1997 and December 2007., Results: A total of 1,077 infants met inclusion criteria, including 889 boys and 188 girls. The annual incidence of IHPS ranged from 0.30 to 0.47 per 1,000 live births with a mean incidence of 0.39 per 1,000 live births. Between 2002 and 2007, the incidence showed a declining trend (P = 0.025) with coincidentally increasing trends for both exclusive breastfeeding (P = 0.014) and breastfeeding plus bottle feeding (P = 0.004). The male-to-female rate ratio was dynamic and increased from 3.03 during the first two weeks of life to 8.94 during the 8(th) through 10th weeks of life. The overall male-to-female rate ratio was 4.30. The mean age at diagnosis was 43.1 ± 2.4 days. After analyzing the months of birth and hospital admission, no seasonal variation associated with IHPS was detected. The mean length of hospital stay was 8.28 ± 7.10 days., Conclusions: The incidence of IHPS in Taiwan, a country with a majority ethnic Chinese population, was lower than observed incidences in Caucasian populations living in Western countries. Breastfeeding campaigns and low maternal smoking rates may contribute to the lower incidence of IHPS in Taiwan. However, additional studies with longer follow-up periods are needed.

Background: To study the epidemiology of childhood intussusception and risk factors of recurrence and operation based on a nationwide data., Methods: Children with hospitalization due to intussusception (ICD9: 560.0) between 1998 and 2007 were identified from a national health insurance database. The incidence was calculated by age, sex, calendar year and month of admission. Recurrence and operation rates, duration and costs of hospitalization were analyzed., Results: A total of 8217 intussusception-related hospitalizations were identified in 7541 children. The incidence of intussusception peaked between 3 and 36 months of age. Male -to-female incidence rate ratio increased from 1.31 in the first year to 2.52 in the ninth year of life. The overall recurrence and operation rates were 7.9% and 24.9%, respectively. In children less than 1 year old, the recurrence rate was 10.1%, which decreased to 5.3% in children over 3 years old. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that children receiving operation had a significantly lower risk of recurrence with an odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 0.31 (0.24-0.41) after controlling for age and sex. There are significantly more cases occurring during the warmer months between May and October compared to the cooler months between November and April., Conclusions: There was a male predominance of intussusception with a dynamic male-to-female incidence rate ratio. Children under 1 year of age have the highest recurrence and operation rates. Seasonal variation of intussusception was suspected in Taiwan., (Copyright © 2010 Taiwan Pediatric Association.
