In this study, a farmland contaminated by heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, and Cr) was selected to evaluate the performance of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) on the removal of heavy metals in soil washing. The highest heavy metal concentrations at the contaminated site were Cu: 1180 mg/kg, Zn: 1450 mg/kg, Ni: 287 mg/kg, and Cr: 316 mg/kg. Batch experiments designed by Taguchi Method were conducted first to assess the effect of different washing conditions on the removal of heavy metals in laboratory. The results of batch experiments show that factors that affected the removal efficiency of heavy metals was of the order γ-PGA concentration > washing time > liquid/soil ratio > rotational speed. The optimal operating parameters for heavy metal removal were γ-PGA 3.5%, liquid/soil ratio 15/1, washing time 60 min, and rotational speed 100 rpm. Under the optimal conditions, up to 50.7% of the major target metal, Cu, was removed. Heavy metals in the soil were mainly Fe-Mn oxide bound and organically bound. On-site treatment using the optimal operating parameters caused 54.3% of Cu removal. When the soil was washed 3 times by γ-PGA, the removal efficiency of Cu was improved to 74.3%. After the treatment, the change in soil bacterial number was insignificant, indicating that γ-PGA is an environmentally friendly washing reagent.

The typical clinical symptoms of hemothorax include a rapid development of chest pain or dyspnea, which may be life-threatening without immediate management. As we know, spontaneous hemothorax, a collection of blood within the pleural cavity without previous history of trauma or other cause, which usually onsets suddenly. The early and accurate diagnosis of spontaneous hemothorax is imperative in clinical practice. We reported a middle-age male undergoing regular hemodialysis was referred to our emergency department due to unknown cause of dyspnea and acute respiratory failure. Chest radiography revealed bilateral patchy infiltration of lung. Pleural tap analysis showed exudative pleural effusion with numerous red blood cells. Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) were performed and confirmed the final diagnosis of spontaneous hemothorax. He was then successfully treated with the surgery of VATS combined chest tube thoracostomy.

The effective dose (HE) and organ or tissue equivalent dose (HT) for use in brain computed tomography (CT) examinations with various body weights were evaluated. Thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD-100H) were inserted into Rando and five anthropomorphic phantoms. These phantoms were made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), according to the specifications of ICRU 48, with masses from 10 to 90 kg. Brain CT examinations were conducted, scanning the maxillae from the external auditory meatus to the parietal bone using a 128-slice multi-detector CT (MDCT) scanner. To reduce errors, three independent trials were conducted. Calculated HE,TLD, based on the weighting factor recommended by ICRP 103, was 1.72 ± 0.28 mSv, which slightly exceeds the HE,DLP of 1.70 mSv, that was calculated from the dose–length product (DLP) of the Rando phantom. This experiment yielded HE,TLD values of ICRP 103 from the highest 1.85 ± 0.28 (90 kg) to the lowest 1.47 ± 0.22 (10 kg) mSv. HE,TLD (mSv) = 5.45×10−3 W(kg) + 1.361, with an R2 of 0.87667. Using the DLP protocol, HE,DLP was estimated from CTDIvol that was recorded directly from the console display of the CT unit and multiplied by the conversion coefficient (k) recommended by the ICRP 103. Finally, the experimental results obtained herein are compared with those in the literature. Physicians should choose and adjust protocols to prevent the exposure of patients to unnecessary radiation, satisfying the as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principle. These findings will be valuable to patients, physicians, radiologists and the public.

A printed slot antenna with 10-dB impedance bandwidth from 22.44 GHz to $> 67 \ \text{GHz}$ is presented. The proposed antenna is basically an elliptical slot antenna fed by a microstrip line on the backside of the substrate. To increase the bandwidth, particularly, a parasitic patch loaded by a cross-shaped slot was non-concentrically placed into the elliptical slot and an open-circuited stub was properly added to the feed line. Experimental results show that the fabricated antenna achieves a ratio bandwidth of $> 2.99;1$ for VSWR $\leq 2$ and at lower frequencies of the bandwidth it exhibits dipole-like radiation patterns with the peak gain of 8.4 dBi. The proposed antenna is suited to future 5G wireless communications at 28 GHz, 38 GHz, and 60 GHz.

The borderline hypertensive rat (BHR) appears to be an appropriate model for investigating the role of the environment in producing hypertension. Previous studies have demonstrated that the BHR shows chronic blood pressure elevations to both stress and high salt intake. Other studies suggest that interactions between the brain and kidney play an important role in initiating this hypertension. The central noradrenergic system has been implicated in these effects, especially in the hypothalamus. Because exercise has been found to attenuate stress-induced hypertension in the BHR, the current study sought to examine the impact of stressors paired with exercise (salt intake or stress) with those combining stress and high salt. Male BHR were exposed to either control, salt plus stress, salt plus exercise, or stress plus exercise conditions for either 2 or 6 months, beginning at 2 months of age. Following sacrifice, brain nuclei in the brain stem and hypothalamus were removed using the Palkovits micropunch technique. Punches were analyzed for NE content via liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Compared with the control condition, chronic salt plus stress led to reductions in NE content, especially in the hypothalamus. Compared with salt plus stress, the exercise conditions were associated with elevated NE levels, especially in the early phases of exposure to the treatment. The possible role of exercise training in preventing a central nervous system trigger from inducing hypertension in the BHR is discussed.

In this study we sought to assess the role of exercise training on blood pressure (BP) reactivity to tailshock stress in rats with varying family histories of hypertension. Exercise training consisted of swimming 90 min per day in isothermic water for either 2, 6, or 10 months, beginning at 2 months of age. Control subjects were age-matched and did not exercise daily. Rats with either zero (Wistar-Kyoto), 1 (borderline hypertensive), or 2 (spontaneously hypertensive) hypertensive parents were studied. At the appropriate age, femoral artery catheters were implanted and rats were studied at rest and in response to a 20-min stress session. Exercise training reduced basal BP, especially in rats with a positive family history that were exercised for the longest duration. Reactivity to stress was actually significantly enhanced in trained rats. Thus, these data do not support the reactivity hypothesis, but suggest several reasons why the literature has been so inconsistent. The discussion emphasizes the importance of basal, rather than phasic. BP responses resulting from exercise training.

In this paper, we will propose an area-based vertical motion estimation (AVME) scheme to efficiently and accurately predict target wireless networks and corresponding target cells for the next handoff of the mobile node (MN) on the increasingly prevalent heterogeneous wireless network environment which consisting of several different wireless networks such as wireless LAN (WLAN), third generation cellular network (3G), etc. We adopt the back propagation neural network (BPN) model in this AVME scheme to generate mobility patterns of MNs by training the BPN model with historical handoff information of these MNs. By using the IBM City Simulator [1] to create the city plan and motions of all MNs, simulation results show that our AVME scheme on heterogeneous wireless networks can achieve higher level of predication accuracy for next handoff than traditional cell-based prediction scheme does on a single wireless network, but with less resources and computations.
