This study examined the effects of life review therapy on the life satisfaction levels of older adults in day care centers in Taiwan. A quasi-experimental design was adopted. A total of 88 adults aged 65 and older were recruited from day care centers through convenience sampling and assigned to two groups based on their level of life satisfaction on Life Satisfaction Index A. The intervention groups participated in a life review therapy for eight weeks in addition to their daily activities. Data were collected at the baseline point and immediately after post-intervention. Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the effect of the intervention on the outcomes. At week eight, the intervention group showed a significantly higher level of life satisfaction than the comparison group. These findings suggest that life review programs may improve general life satisfaction among older adults.

Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are at increased risk of progression to dementia. Whether it is feasible to engage this population in expressive arts therapy and yield effects on cognition and depression for older adults with MCI remained unclear. The aim of this study examined the effects of expressive arts therapy on the cognitive function and depression levels of older adults with MCI in day care centers in Taiwan. A quasi-experimental design was conducted in a sample of day care centers older adults with MCI. A total of 88 participants with MCI were assigned to the intervention or comparison group. The intervention groups participated in an expressive arts therapy for twelve weeks in addition to their daily activities. Data were collected at the baseline point and immediately after post-intervention. Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the effect of the intervention on the outcomes. At week twelve, Findings indicated that the intervention group had significant improvement in cognitive function and depression over time than the comparison group. These findings provide evidence for the feasibility and efficacy of expressive arts therapy intervention in older adults with MCI.

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of chair yoga therapy on improving functional status and daily life activity scores in older female adults with knee osteoarthritis living in the community. A quasi-experimental design was adopted. In total, 85 female participants with knee osteoarthritis were assigned to the chair yoga therapy intervention group (n = 43) or the comparison (n = 42) group. A 12-week chair yoga exercise program was provided to the intervention group two times per week from January to April 2020. The primary outcomes, which include changes in physical functional ability, body mass index, and biophysiological indicators, were evaluated for all participants in the pre- and post-measures time periods. The analysis shows that the participants had a significantly higher level of functional fitness and daily life activity scores after the chair yoga intervention. This finding indicates that the chair yoga program was effective in improving the functional fitness and daily life activity scores of community-dwelling elderly females with knee osteoarthritis.

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT ON THE SUBJECT?: Alternative option was developed to improve care due to the increasing costs of care cost and the number of people diagnosed with dementia. Reminiscence therapy is a commonly implemented alternative option used in long-term care facilities. Reminiscence therapy is designed for cognitive decline that is also known as life review. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Reminiscence therapy, known as psychosocial interventions in dementia care, can be used to assist people with dementia recollect prior events, activities, and experiences in order to improve their cognitive, mood, and overall well-being. Reminiscence therapy increased cognitive function and quality of life and reduced depressive and neuropsychiatric symptoms among people with dementia. Reminiscence therapy may be considered a useful non-pharmacological intervention for people with dementia living in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities. The development of a global standard protocol for the application of reminiscence therapy may be necessary for future randomized controlled trials (RCTs). ABSTRACT: Introduction Reminiscence therapy is an alternative to pharmaceutical intervention provided during long-term care, especially for individuals with dementia. However, the effects of reminiscence therapy in dementia care remain inconclusive. Aim The goal of this study is to examine the effects of reminiscence therapy implementation in people with dementia. Design Systematic literature review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Methods This study searched systematically using 6 databases. The eligibility criteria included patients with dementia, applied reminiscence therapy, randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental studies, and published in the English language. The PEDro scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. The meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model to calculate the pooled effects of reminiscence therapy. Stata 16.0 was used for statistical analysis. Result A total of 29 studies met the eligibility criteria, including 3102 participants. Overall, reminiscence therapy increased cognitive functions and quality of life and decreased depression and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Implication for Practice Reminiscence therapy may be considered a useful non-pharmacological intervention for people with dementia living in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities. A standard protocol for reminiscence therapy may be necessary for future studies.

Home care patients have swallowing dysfunction and rely on an in-dwelling nasogastric tube (NGT) to complement oral food intake, supplement their diet, and maintain adequate nutritional status. This study explored the relationship between aspiration pneumonia (AP) and feeding care among home care patients with an in-dwelling NGT. This preliminary study employed a cross-sectional design. There were 35 patients who relied on an in-dwelling NGT to complement their oral intake of food (NGT-oral feeding) and their primary caregivers participated in this study. All of them developed AP in the past year. Factors involving food intake performance during mealtime of the home care patients and feeding care provided by the caregivers were simultaneously observed and recorded. Among the six risk factors univariately correlated with the incidence of AP, feeding in a noisy environment, using a large spoon to feed the participants, more than 5 mL of food per mouthful, food intake duration lasting > 30 min, swallowing twice for each mouthful of food, and coughing at least once every day remained significant in the logistic regression model (all p < 0.05). Four risk factors for AP were correlated with feeding care; the adjusted risk ratio ranged from 6.17 to 14.96 (all p < 0.05). In addition to each individual’s food intake ability, improper feeding assistance was related to the risk factors for AP among home care patients with NGT-oral feeding. Thus, home caregivers should receive safe oral feeding education and training.

An oral hygiene board game was designed as an intervention tool and applied to explore the effectiveness for the oral health related knowledge (OHK) score and plaque index (PI) of adults with intellectual disability (ID). This one-group pre/post-test design study was conducted in a residential long-term care facility for 42 participants. The study had one pre-test (baseline) and three post-tests evaluated in both control and intervention stages, respectively. The participants participated in a 60-min oral hygiene board game twice a week during the intervention stage. Total OHK score and PI of the participants were recorded to determine the effectiveness of intervention. There were no differences in OHK score and PI between the two stages at baseline. The results in intervention stage demonstrated a significant gradual increase and reduction in the OHK score when compared with the control stage. A statistically significant improvement in the OHK score and PI (42.29% and &minus, 33.28%, respectively) at the end of intervention between two stages was recorded. This study proved a board game is deemed an effective education method applicable to promote the OHK and skills of ID adults.

Depression is common in older adults and is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment. To clarify the possible roles of board game use in psychosomatic health promotion, this study evaluated the effects of board game activities in reducing depression in older adults. This was a quasi-experimental study. Purposive sampling was used to select 150 participants aged 65 years and above with intact mental functions who were currently residing in adult day care centers. Seventy-five participants who participated in 12 sessions of selected board game activities were assigned to the experimental group, and 75 participants who adhered to their ordinary activities were allocated to the control group. Structured questionnaires were used for data collection. The board game activities showed promising effects on the depression levels of the investigated older adults living in adult day care centers. Therefore, one possible beneficial effect of board game activities may be reduced depression in older adults. The results of this study provide support for the mediating role of board game activities in the mental health of long-term care elders. Incorporating board game activities into social work may help to make it more diverse and innovative.

Life review therapy, used as part of a comprehensive therapy plan for increasing the quality of life of the elderly, helps them to resolve their past conflicts, and accept their present conditions. This study tested the effectiveness of a structured life review therapy protocol on the life satisfaction of institutionalized older adults. A quasi-experimental design was adopted in this study. Fifty older adults aged 65 or above were recruited from nursing homes in southern Taiwan through convenience sampling. The participants in the intervention group carried out life review therapy for eight weeks in addition to their daily activities. The participants in the comparison group maintained their daily activities. Both groups were evaluated using a life-satisfaction scale including two aspects of life worries and situations in weeks 1 and 8. Data were collected at baseline (T1), immediately post-intervention (T2). Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the effect of the intervention on the outcomes. The overall life satisfaction increased significantly over time for the intervention group compared to the comparison group from week 1 to week 8. The life review therapy programs showed promising effects in improving the life satisfaction of older adults living in nursing homes.

Objectives To evaluate the applicability of the Healthy Beat Acupunch (HBA) exercise program for older adults at community care centers and to explore their perceived impacts and suggestions for program protocol after six months of HBA exercises. Design & setting This prospective and descriptive study recruited 113 older adults from four community care centers. Intervention The HBA exercises were conducted 3 times a week, 40 min per session, for six months. Main outcome measures The program evaluation focused on four criteria: simplicity, safety, suitability, and helpfulness of the three phases of the HBA program using a 10-point ladder scale. The semi-structured interviews were focused on the participants’ exercise experiences, perceived impacts on their health, and suggestions for the HBA program protocol. Results The average scores of the four criteria in each phase of the program ranged between 9.59 and 9.98 points. Participants reported an increase in their limb flexibility (n = 31) and that they were more relaxed (n = 26) and more energetic (n = 26) after engaging in the HBA exercises. Most of the participants suggested that the HBA program should be offered three times a week, 40 min per session, with 30 people in a group, and led by instructors who were professional, hardworking, easygoing, and enthusiastic, regardless of gender and age. Conclusions The HBA program was rated at a high level of simplicity, safety, suitability, and helpfulness by community older adults, which indicated that the program was considered as appropriate and applicable for the older population.

Community mental health is an important area of public health. This study initially elaborates from the perspective of community psychology the concept and basis of the practice of community mental health work, including the importance of prevention over treatment, of valuing personal advantages and capabilities, and of adopting an ecological perspective, a respect for diversity, empowerment, and scientific cooperation and integration. Subsequently, this paper reviews the history of the development of community mental health work in Taiwan and of the operations, developmental issues, and difficulties currently faced by community mental health centers. Finally, this paper addresses the future prospects for community mental health work in Taiwan in hopes that the government will attach greater importance to related policies and implementation plans, optimize the service and delivery systems of community mental health organizations, reinforce community mental health education, develop effective community mental health promotion strategies, provide accessible and continuous direct services, integrate community mental health resources, and support the families of mental health patients in order to consolidate and better promote community-based mental health work.臺灣社區心理衛生政策回顧、發展現況與未來展望.社區心理衛生是公共衛生重要範疇之一，本文先從社區心理學觀點闡述社區心理衛生工作的理念與實踐基礎，包含預防重於治療、強調個人優勢與能力、生態觀點的重要性、尊重多樣性、賦權、科技合作與統整等面向。繼而回顧我國社區心理衛生工作的發展脈絡，包含社區心理衛生中心設立過程、營運模式、發展現況與面臨的困境，最後，提出臺灣社區心理衛生工作未來展望，希冀政府重視社區心理衛生政策與執行規劃、健全社區心理衛生組織服務及輸送體系、加強社區民眾心理衛生教育等面向，強化社區民眾心理健康促進，提供可近性及連續性的直接服務，整合社區心理衛生資源以及如何支持病患家屬等議題，希望讓臺灣心理衛生工作真正落實於社區之中，實踐社區民眾心理健康的促進。.

The life of people living with HIV has been prolonged with HAART, and since 1997 the introduction of antiretroviral HAART in Taiwan has increased the survival rate of infected people to 85.9%. Therefore, with the extension of the life of people living with HIV and the entry into the old age, how to provide suitable long-term care services is an issue that Taiwan policy needs to face and think. This research through surveys and interviews to find Taiwan elderly people living with HIV in Taiwan needs and plight of the contains (1) diseases and health care issues, (2) social prejudice and discrimination (3) psychology and adjustment of the identity and reflection (4) adjustment of interpersonal relationships. According to the empirical data shows Taiwan's long-term care measures in difficulties arising in the care for older people living with HIV (1) non-suitable for elderly people living with HI community long-term care services; (2) long-term care institution the exclusion of people living with HIV (3) lack of financial resources of older living with HIV with using institutional long term care. (4) the incoherence of HIV medical and long-term care measures. (5) course focuses on long-term care health care, neglect the psychosocial dimensions of older people living with HIV. This study attempts to present long-term care of the elderly people living with HIV needs and challenges and dilemmas facing in Taiwan.
