This study aimed to develop a facile synthesis procedure for heterogeneous catalysts based on organic guanidine derivatives superbases chemically grafted on silica-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. Thus, the three organosilanes that were obtained by reacting the selected carbodiimides (N,N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC), N,N′-diisopropylcarbodiimide (DIC), respectively 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) were used in a one-pot synthesis stage for the generation of a catalytic active protective shell through the simultaneous hydrolysis/condensation reaction with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The catalysts were characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM, BET and XRD analysis confirming the successful covalent attachment of the organic derivatives in the silica shell. The second aim was to highlight the capacity of microwaves (MW) to intensify the transesterification process and to evaluate the activity, stability, and reusability characteristics of the catalysts. Thus, in MW-assisted transesterification reactions, all catalysts displayed FAME yields of over 80% even after 5 reactions/activation cycles. Additionally, the influence of FFA content on the catalytic activity was investigated. As a result, in the case of Fe3O4@SiO2-EDG, a higher tolerance towards the FFA content can be noticed with a FAME yield of over 90% (for a 5% (weight) vs oil catalyst content) and 5% weight FFA content. • The synthesis of biodiesel in a continuous laboratory process has been studied. • Ultrasounds or microwaves have been tested for intensifying the process. • For each technique used the conditions were optimized. • The grid energy consumption was measured for each process. • The additional energy consumption due to the intensification method was only 0.08%. At this time biodiesel appears to be a viable proposition as a renewable energy source and an alternative to fossil-based fuels. Following many years of research, the use of process intensification techniques for the production of biodiesel is well documented. This work has focused more on a study of biodiesel production using continuous flow systems assisted by acoustic cavitation (ultrasonic or hydrodynamic) or microwaves. The target end user is the small or medium farm where such equipment could provide sufficient fuel for on-site agricultural machinery using renewable or waste green materials produced on site. As a renewable and sustainable resource, lignocellulosic biomass serves as a crucial raw material for the production of biofuels, biochemicals, and various value-added products. This paper aims to develop and optimize a mild alkaline treatment of sawdust assisted by ultrasound, along with enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated material. The alkaline sonochemical pretreatment emerged as the optimal approach to enhance the susceptibility of cellulose to subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis to improve the yield of reducing sugars. A comparative study was performed using various ultrasonic applicators (horn and bath) and conventional assisted alkaline pretreatment. The ultrasonic-assisted pretreatment revealed a higher delignification of 68% (horn) and 57% (bath) compared with conventional pretreatment. Processes were optimized using a statistical analysis based on a 23 factorial design. The ratios between sawdust and alkaline solution (RSL = 0.5–1.5 g/100 mL), US amplitude (A = 20–60%), and working temperature (t = 30–50 °C) were selected as process factors. The optimal operating conditions to maximize the reducing sugar yield (138.15 mg GE/gsubstrate) were found as follows: a solid/liquid ratio of RSL,opt = 1.25 g/100 mL, US amplitude of Aopt = 60%, and pretreatment temperature of topt = 50 °C. Bioethanol is the world’s leader biofuel and it is produced by fermentation from glucose feedstocks. The fermentation rate is quite low and any method of increasing the reaction rate is welcome. The main goal of our research is to identify the domain for microwave Specific Absorption Ratio (SAR) which leads to an increase in fermentation rate of Saccharomyces cerevisiae without affecting its viability. For this purpose, an installation was setup which allows for glucose fermentation to be carried out in the presence of microwave, with good control on SAR and on temperature of the fermentative medium. An optimum SAR domain, between 15 and 25 W kg −1 , was determined, in which a significant boost of glucose fermentation manifests, with an increase in fermentation rates of up to 20%. Based on the observations made through electron and optical microscopy on cell growth and viability, we have noticed that microwave irradiation favours ethanol production of the cells, against their growth. Currently there is a drive towards the minimisation and reclamation of valuable materials from the waste products of the food and beverage industry. This can be achieved through the extraction of residual nutraceuticals from such materials. Tomato pomace contains carotenoids and other chemicals which can be extracted directly into edible oils to improve the health-giving properties of such oils. We report here a novel green solvent, fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE), which is significantly more effective than sunflower oil and hexane for the extraction of lycopene and beta-carotene from tomato skin waste. FAEE are a non-toxic renewable resource that is environmentally friendly and to our knowledge has never been used as a vegetal extraction fluid. The efficiency of FAEE extraction was significantly improved relative to both sunflower oil and hexane under ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions. In addition, FAEE have the additional and significant advantage that once enriched with the extracted nutraceuticals can be used directly as a food additive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
