Abstract

This paper aims to provide the elemental composition of particles found in natural gas. Particle sampling is performed on cellulose filters obtained from an industrial gas storage facility, and the qualitative particle composition is determined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Our results establish that natural gas may contain solid particles, with sizes ranging from less than 1 &mu, m to more than 50 &mu, m. The observed particles are composed of numerous elements, such as aluminum (Al), silica (Si), sulphur (S), chloride (Cl), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), sodium (Na), manganese (Mg), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), nickel (Ni), vanadium (V), potassium (K), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), silver (Ag), cobalt (Co), iodine (I), and barium (Ba), with relative occurrences ranging from 1 to 85%. Moreover, metallic elements enable the formation of larger particles as a result of the agglomeration of smaller particles.

Abstract

International audience; Chemical composition of waters from deep aquifers reflects the interactions between waters and reservoir rocks. The determination of an accurate chemical composition of waters is thus necessary to identify the origin of this mineralisation. The water chemistry of the Infra-Molassic Eocene aquifer (Aquitaine Basin - France) has been investigated through different studies highlighting various origins for water mineralization. Isotopic analyses helped, in agreement with hydrogeology, to identify geochemical basins whose properties modify the chemical water composition (André et al., 2002; Douez, 2007). However, if the chemical composition of waters from this deep aquifer (about 500 to 1000 m depth) does usually not change with time, seasonal variations of sulphate concentrations occur in a specific area. About 200 analyses of sulphate collected during more than 10 years show variations between 10 and 110 mg SO4/L. These variations of sulphate concentrations are correlated with the water conductivity but they are anti-correlated with piezometric variations (reaching about 80 m per year) which are due to the seasonal storage of natural gas in the aquifer and are recorded about 30 km around the storage area. Several hypotheses are considered in order to explain these sulphate variations: mixing of waters from different aquifers, vertical transfers by advection or dispersion from the molasse aquitard, local biological processes… This study uses both isotopic tracers (18O and 34S of sulphates, 13C and 14C) and composition of trace elements (F, B, Ba, Sr…) in order to determine the origin of these variations. It will be based on existing chemical data but also on the acquisition of new ones. This chemical approach will be secondly coupled with a hydrological modelling of the specific area in order to understand the local behaviour of the aquifer (residence time, recharge processes, interaction with adjacent reservoirs/aquitards).

International audience; Direct aqueous carbonation is a promising mineral carbonation route. Under mildly acidic conditions, this single-step carbonation process aims to simultaneously dissolve Ca/Mg-bearing silicates or wastes and precipitate Ca/Mg carbonates. By and large, since mineral dissolution is rate limiting due to the lack of protons at near-neutral pH, research has mainly been concerned with the issue of enhancing dissolution. By analysing the liquid phase, it has been established that polyacid organic salts can significantly enhance silicate dissolution under such unfavourable conditions. Comparatively little attention has been paid to the investigation of the very basis of the whole process, i.e. the concomitance of silicate dissolution and carbonate precipitation. By taking a close look at the solid phases in lizardite and olivine slurries, this work confirms the co-occurrence of magnesium silicate dissolution and magnesite precipitation inside a stirred reactor operating at 120°C, 20 bar of CO2 and 0.1M disodium oxalate, thereby bringing indisputable evidence that supports the foundation of direct aqueous carbonation with organic salts.

Abstract: 45000 tones of CO2 have been injected so far into the Rousse depleted gas reservoir, geological storage of the first French CCS operation. Following a detailed mineralogical and thermodynamical characterization [1], this paper reviews the geochemical impacts of the CO2 injection. Firstly, reactive pathways were identified, followed by a literature review of the reaction kinetics. Finally, a reactive transport model was set up. This work confirms that Mano reservoir mineralogy and porosity are largely unaffected by the storage of CO2. The major new finding is that the geochemical impacts are primarily dominated by pressure depletion rather than CO2 acidity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Geochemical modeling of the CO2 injection into the Rousse depleted gas reservoir (Lacq CO2 injection pilot, France) requires an accurate knowledge of initial mineralogical and geochemical conditions in the formation. Therefore, the primary objective of this work was to provide a detailed mineralogical and chemical composition of the Rousse reservoir (Mano dolomite), and accurate relative mineral proportions. This was achieved by use of a combination of techniques including in-house developed methodology for bulk rock quantitative mineralogy and complementary approaches such as optical microscopy, SEM-Quantax (chemical mapping) and Electron Miroprobe Analysis (mineral chemical composition). Particular attention was paid the minute amounts of chlorite occurring in the reservoir, in order to obtain its exact chemical composition and textural habitus. The chlorite revealed to be Mg-rich and of a sudoite-like nature. CO2 injection into a depleted gas reservoir started in January 2010 and 45000 tones of CO2 have been injected so far. Reservoir modeling studies were conducted for various purposes. First objective is to forecast reservoir behavior during and after CO2 injection, and to verify this behavior once monitoring data is available. This is achieved by using a standard oil and gas workflow. Abstract: At the end of a CO2 capture process the gas mixture composition can vary considerably incorporating components such as O2, N2, SOx, H2S, NyOx, H2, CO, Ar at various concentration levels. These impurities, even if their concentrations are not significant from a health perspective, could lead to significant chemical reactivity towards reservoir or caprock minerals and well materials. Potential processes and impacts are not well documented yet. However, in the near future, it will be crucial for both operators and regulators to rely on numerical reactive-transport simulations able to model the behavior of these complex systems and consequently able to ensure the long-term stability of storage sites. Furthermore, numerous modeling studies have shown how limiting it could be to consider simple assumptions for gases such as “dissolved gases only” or “infinite sources of gas”, and also how important it is to correctly handle the gaseous phase. Recently, within the GAZ ANNEXES project funded by the ANR (French national research agency), we developed gas modules for both the geochemical code CHESS and the coupled reactive/transport code HYTEC. These advances make it now possible to simulate water/gas/rock interactions accurately. Within this project, some of the potential co-injected impurities were experimentally studied, highlighting their influence on the geochemical reactivity of some carbonate rocks involved in CCS. In this paper, the new gas module of CHESS is presented as well as its ability to reproduce these experimental results giving an important help to study both qualitatively and quantitatively the impact of co-injected gases. One key result for the experiments involving a gas mixture (82%mol CO2(g), 6% Ar(g), 4% N2(g), 4% SO2(g) and 4% O2(g)), which are the closest to real operations: both experimental and numerical results indicate a relative low reactivity of the rock. Abstract: Regarding the hydrocarbon source and CO2 capture processes, fuel gas from boilers may be accompanied by so-called “annex gases” which could be co-injected in a geological storage. These gases, such as SOx, NOx, or oxygen for instance, are likely to interact with reservoir fluids and rocks and well materials (casing and cement) and could potentially affect the safety of the storage. However, there are currently only few data on the behaviour of such gas mixtures, as well as on their chemical reactivity, especially in the presence of water. One reason for this lack comes from the difficulty in handling because of their dangerousness and their chemical reactivity. Therefore, the purpose of the “Gaz Annexes” project was to develop new experimental and analytical protocols in order to acquire new thermodynamic data on these annex gases, in fine for predicting the behaviour of a geological storage of CO2 + co-injected gases in the short, medium and long terms. This paper presents the mail results from the “Gaz Annexes” project concerning acquisition of PVT experimental and pseudo-experimental data to adjust and validate thermodynamic models for water/gas/salts mixtures as well as the possible influence of SO2 and NO on the geological storage of CO2. Abstract

Abstract: We present an experimental study of the retention/flow properties of the caprock of the Rousse depleted gas field, where up to 120000 tons of CO2 are to be injected over a 2-year period. One of the caprock samples examined comes from the carbonated breccias overlying the reservoir, a deep Jurassic horst, whereas the other samples come from the 2000 m-thick Upper Cretaceous marl (carbonated turbidites) located above these breccias and the reservoir. The single-phase (brine) intrinsic permeabilities of the marly samples turn out to be extremely low and stress-sensitive. They vary from 20-25 nanoDarcy for the most permeable sample at low stress, to below 1 nanoDarcy at effective stresses in the range of 10 MPa and above. These latter values are lower by at least one order of magnitude than the published values for the caprocks of the Weyburn field and Utsira aquifer. However, the permeability of the brecciated sample is considerably higher, and decreases from ca. 0.1 to 0.003 milliDarcy when the effective stress increases to 20 MPa, which possibly reflects some of the reservoir petrophysical behavior. Gas breakthrough (BT) experiments are undertaken on two of the marly samples fully saturated with brine, using either CO2 or nitrogen as the gas phase. One sample is able to resist CO2 excess pressures as large as 7.6 MPa, whereas in the other more permeable sample a relative pressure of 4.5-6 MPa is enough to induce the BT of nitrogen, a gas with interfacial properties more favourable than CO2 to capillary sealing. Nitrogen flow following BT is extremely limited, with an effective permeability below 1 nanoDarcy. Upon subsequent sample resaturation with brine and then BT with CO2, some alteration of the sealing behaviour is observed, manifested by a decreased BT pressure and an increased gas effective permeability. Abstract: In the context of the limitation of global warming, geological storage of acid gases is one of the main options retained to reduce anthropogenic gas emissions to the atmosphere The work presented here documents the reactivity of a carbonate rock in the presence of a gas containing CO2 and co-injected gases: 4% SO2, 4% O2, 4% N2 and 6% Ar representative of oxycombustion flue gas before any purification (eg. desulfurisation) process. The study is based on experiments conducted in batch reactors simulating the interactions occurring between the rock and acid gases that would be injected in a geological storage context. It shows that the main mineral transformations of the rocks are due to the co-injected gases SO2 and O2 despite their low concentration (less than 4%). These transformations should have different impacts on the petrophysical properties of the rocks such as porosity and permeability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
