The current study examined how African American children’s experiences of perceived personal racial discrimination and perceived vicarious racial discrimination were linked with depressive and anxiety symptoms, and whether there were significant sex differences in these relations. The sample included 73 African American children (48% male), ranging from 7 to 12 years of age (M = 8.82, SD = 2.06). Models specified children’s personal discrimination and vicarious discrimination as predictors of depressive and anxiety symptoms. Nested model comparisons were also used to examine whether associations varied as a function of children’s sex. The current study hypothesized that both forms of discrimination would be associated with greater anxiety and depressive symptoms. Findings indicated that children’s personal racial discrimination significantly predicted greater child anxiety symptoms for both boys and girls. No significant sex differences emerged. Neither personal nor vicarious discrimination significantly predicted depressive symptoms. Our findings highlight that racialized experiences occur early in childhood and have important implications for children’s mental health.

The current study examined associations between cultural socialization and ethnic-racial identity via positive and negative conversations about one’s ethnicity/race. Ethnic-racial differences between Asian American, African American, Latinx, Multiracial, and White students were explored. College students 18–22 (M age = 18.46) participating in a university-wide study provided self-reports of childhood cultural socialization, engagement in conversations about ethnicity/race during college, and ethnic-racial identity. Cultural socialization was associated with more positive conversations about race, and, in turn, greater ethnic-racial identity exploration, resolution, and affirmation among all students. Additionally, among Multiracial and African American students, cultural socialization was associated with greater negative conversations about race and, in turn, less ethnic-racial identity affirmation. Although cultural socialization was not associated with negative conversations about race for Asian American, Latinx, or White students, the relation between greater negative conversations about race and less ethnic-racial identity affirmation was significant. Negative conversations about race also informed greater ethnic-racial identity exploration among all students, but was not associated with ethnic-racial identity resolution. The current study highlights the nuanced ways that childhood cultural socialization and conversations about one’s ethnicity/race influence college students’ ethnic-racial identity, both similarly and differently among Asian American, African American, Latinx, Multiracial, and White students. Two items created for the current study were used to assess positive and negative conversations about one’s ethnicity/race in the past month. Response options for the positive conversation item (“In the past month, I had conversations with someone about something positive about my ethnic-racial group.”) and negative conversation item (“In the past month, I had conversations with someone about something negative about my ethnic-racial group.”) were scored using a 5-point Likert scale ranging from (1) Not at all to (5) Extremely or almost always. Higher scores indicated more frequent positive conversations and more frequent negative conversations, respectively. Initial support for the validity of the two items for positive and negative conversations about race has been provided by research with emerging adults (Delaney et al., in press).

The purpose of the current study was to test the role that components of ethnic identity (i.e., exploration and resolution) play in academic achievement, and to examine mental health, racial discrimination, and gender as moderators of these associations among Black college students. Participants included 341 college students who identified as a Black/African American female or male ( M age = 18.4; SD = .34), and completed measures of ethnic identity, perceived racial discrimination, and mental health. Results indicated that higher levels of ethnic identity exploration were associated with a lower grade point average (GPA) among males with higher levels of depressive symptoms, but not among males with lower levels of depressive symptoms. Similarly, higher levels of ethnic identity resolution were associated with a lower GPA among males with higher levels of anxiety symptoms, but not males with lower levels of anxiety symptoms. Findings may have implications for clinical and educational interventions by highlighting the nuanced ways that ethnic identity, mental health, and gender affect Black college students’ academic achievement.

Ethnic-racial identity (ERI) is associated with adaptive outcomes in emerging adulthood, but more research is needed on factors that may inform ERI, such as receiving one’s genetic ancestry results. The current study examined changes in ERI using a pre-test post-test design in which 116 emerging adults 18–25 years were randomly assigned to either receiving their genetic ancestry results before the post-test (the testing condition) or after post-test (the control condition). We also tested whether ethnicity/race and gender moderated these associations. Findings indicated that male students of color (SOC) in the testing condition experienced an increase in ERI affirmation from pre-test to post-test, and male SOC in the control condition experienced a decrease in ERI affirmation from pre-test to post-test. There were no significant differences in ERI affirmation change between students in the testing condition and control condition for female SOC, White males, or White females.

Alopecia neoplastica (AN) is caused by neoplastic cells damaging hair follicles, resulting in patchy hair loss like cicatricial alopecia and alopecia areata. AN has predominantly described cutaneous metastasis to the scalp from primary visceral malignant tumors. Less frequently, AN results from a primary scalp neoplasm. Compared to “secondary AN,” there is a paucity of literature on “primary AN.” Herein, we present a comprehensive literature review of primary AN and introduce a unique case of amelanotic melanoma causing primary AN. Including our presented case, 11 cases of primary AN have been reported with causative scalp neoplasms including angiosarcoma, hemangioendothelioma, syringomatous carcinoma, ectopic extramammary Paget’s disease, and primary desmoplastic melanoma. 27.3% (3 of 11) of cases were misdiagnosed and treated for a primary alopecia, and 36.4% (4 of 11) of lesions were present for multiple years or an unknown amount of time, likely due to difficulty in recognizing scalp lesion or misdiagnosis. All patients required surgical excision with 36.4% (4 of 11) requiring chemotherapy, radiation, or photodynamic therapy. Two patients with scalp angiosarcoma died from their aggressive disease. Due to the risks of malignant primary AN if allowed to progress, primary AN should be considered in patients presenting with scarring alopecia.

Excessive alcohol use and problems during college is a major public health concern, and there are health disparities in patterns of drinking and alcohol-related illnesses based on ethnicity and race. Given the prevalence and disparities in excessive alcohol use and problems and associated negative impacts, it is important to examine potential protective factors such as dimensions of ethnic-racial identity (ERI). Thus, the current study examined how multiple dimensions of ERI were associated with alcohol use and alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms, and how these relations varied by individuals’ ethnic-racial group among 1850 diverse emerging adults (M = 18.46, SD = .38). Findings indicated that there were significant differences by race/ethnicity. ERI affirmation was negatively associated with AUD symptoms for Asian individuals and African American individuals, while ERI exploration was positively associated with AUD symptoms among African American individuals. ERI resolution was negatively associated with alcohol use for Latinx individuals and positively associated with alcohol use for Multiracial individuals. Among White individuals, ERI exploration was negatively associated with alcohol use and ERI affirmation was negatively associated with AUD symptoms. Overall, the current study builds on our understanding of nuanced ways in which ethnic-racial identity impacts alcohol problems among emerging adults and highlights areas for future research.

Racial discrimination is associated with adverse mental health outcomes among Students of Color. In order to address racial tensions, it is important to consider students' dialogues about race. The current study tested whether having positive and negative conversations about one's ethnic-racial group mediated the relation between racial discrimination at T1 and depressive symptoms 5 months later at T2 among 94 college Students of Color. Findings indicated that greater racial discrimination at T1 was associated with more frequent negative conversations about race at T2 (b = .38, p = .00), which was, in turn, associated with greater depressive symptoms at T2 (b = 2.73, p = .04); this pathway demonstrated significant mediation. However, positive conversations about race was not a significant mediator in this association. The current study highlights the importance of focusing on racial conversations after racial discrimination in order to minimize adverse effects on mental health among Students of Color.

Pulmonary carcinoid tumors are uncommon neuroendocrine tumors that rarely metastasize to the skin. We report the case of a 71-year-old woman with a longstanding history of primary atypical pulmonary carcinoid tumor who presented with a new tender cutaneous nodule. Immunostaining of the nodule was consistent with metastatic atypical carcinoid tumor of the skin including positive staining for neuroendocrine markers chromogranin and synaptophysin. Dermatologists should consider cutaneous neuroendocrine metastasis when evaluating new nodules in patients with stable pulmonary carcinoid tumors or in those with concomitant concerning respiratory symptoms.

Introduction: Tocilizumab (TCZ), a recombinant humanized antihuman monoclonal antibody targeting interleukin-6 (IL-6) signaling, is often utilized in the management of autoimmune disease. Few reports have demonstrated hair growth changes in patients on TCZ. Case Presentation: Herein, we review the literature and report a 21-year-old woman with progressive alopecia areata (AA) presenting with AA improvement while on TCZ for concomitant posterior uveitis. Discussion: Our case demonstrates the potential ability of TCZ to disrupt IL-6 signaling involved in AA, leading to hair loss and regrowth.

Objective: The present study examined whether ethnic-racial identity (ERI) exploration, resolution, and affirmation informed individuals' beliefs about virginity (ie, virginity as a gift, stigma, process) and first coital affective reactions (FCAR; ie, positive and negative), and whether these relations varied by biological sex. Participants and method: The sample consisted of 184 Black college students (Mage = 19.79, SD = 2.08) enrolled in a large Southern university. Participants completed a virginity beliefs measure, first coital affective reaction measure, and an ethnic-racial identity measure. Results: Findings indicated that for Black females, greater ERI exploration was associated with decreased virginity as a gift beliefs; and ERI resolution was associated with increased virginity as a gift beliefs. Additionally, for Black males and females, ERI affirmation resulted in more positive FCAR, less negative FCAR, and less views of virginity as a stigma. Conclusion:Finding implications are presented in the context of future research.

e12537 Background: Chemotherapy induced alopecia (CIA) is one of the most distressing adverse events reported by patients undergoing chemotherapy, yet there is limited data addressing the impact of CIA on treatment acceptance. Scalp cooling (SC) has been shown to decrease CIA. Here we report our assessment of CIA as a barrier to chemotherapy and the efficacy of SC using pre- and post-treatment surveys of patient reported outcomes. Methods: Patients who received alopecia-inducing chemotherapy and utilized SC between November 2018 and September 2020 at our institution were enrolled in a prospective IRB approved registry. Surveys including the Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia Distress Scale (CADS) were administered before and within two weeks after treatment. Using the CADS survey, patients were asked about their hesitation to receive chemotherapy and the burden they feel about alopecia as a side effect of chemotherapy. Results: Of 90 patients who completed the first or last treatment survey, the most common treatment regimens were docetaxel/cyclophosphamide (TC), docetaxel/carboplatin/trastuzumab/ pertuzumab (TCHP), and paclitaxel/trastuzumab (TH). The most common disease type was breast cancer (92.2%) and all participants were females. Of 74 SC patients who completed the pre-treatment survey, the median age was 50.5 (range 26-75) and included 65 (87.8%) Caucasian, 4 (5.4%) Black, and 3 (4.0%) Asian patients. 89.2% used Paxman SC and 10.8% used Penguin SC. Of those who completed the CADS survey prior to treatment, 8 (10.8%) reported ‘quite a bit’ to ‘very high’ hesitation, and 34 (46.0%) reported feeling that alopecia was either ‘quite’ or ‘very much’ a burden of chemotherapy. All 40 SC patients (median age 53.5, range 31-76) who completed the post-treatment survey were Caucasian and used Paxman SC. Self-reported efficacy of SC in these 40 patients was less than 10% hair loss in 10 (25.0%), 11-25% hair loss in 7 (17.5%), 26-50% hair loss in10 (25.0%), 51-75% hair loss in 9 (22.5%), and 76-100% hair loss in 4 (10%). Overall, 27 (67.5%) patients reported SC limited alopecia ‘a lot’ to ‘perfectly’. Conclusions: In our study, alopecia was identified as a notable burden to nearly half our SC patients and 10.8% hesitated when making their decision to receive chemotherapy. After using SC during treatment, 67.5% of patients reported less than 50% hair loss, and 67.5% reported that SC reduced alopecia ‘a lot’ or ‘perfectly’. Our study highlights the significance of alopecia as a chemotherapy burden and potential barrier to accepting treatment, and suggests SC may be efficacious in decreasing CIA, which may allow patients to feel less hesitation towards chemotherapy.
