A novel frictional drag reducing self-polishing copolymer (FDR-SPC) was first developed by the authors. The FDR-SPC is a special derivative of an SPC that was designed to achieve skin frictional drag reduction in turbulent water flow by releasing polyethylene glycol (PEG) into water through a hydrolysis reaction. Thus, the FDR-SPC coating acts as a continuous medium accommodating countless, molecular-level polymer injectors. However, direct evidence of such PEG release has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we report the results of in situ PEG concentration measurement based on the planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) method. Polyethylene glycol methacrylate (PEGMA) was probed by the fluorescent functional material dansyl, and the fluorescence intensity from dansyl-PEG was then measured to quantify the concentration in the flow. The near-wall concentration of dansyl-PEG is observed to range from 1 to 2 ppm depending on the flow speed, which corroborates the existence of a drag reducing function for the FDR-SPC. In the concurrent measurement of skin friction, the present FDR-SPC specimen exhibited a skin friction reduction ratio of 9.49% at the freestream flow speed U = 5 m / s . In the comparative experiment of dansyl-PEGMA solution injection, the skin friction was found to decrease by 11.9%, which is in reasonable accordance with that for the FDR-SPC. CF4 is commonly used in semiconductor industries, and its removal requires a large amount of energy because it is a highly stable perfluorinated compound. In this study, a rotating arc-catalytic reactor that uses thermal plasma as the heat source for catalysts is introduced as an efficient method for CF4 removal. An AC rotating arc plasma was used with the catalyst for CF4 removal, and the plasma and catalyst were configured serially in this reactor. Destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of CF4 and the energy efficiency of the removal process were experimentally investigated in the input power range of 2–3 kW and a steam-to-CF4 molar ratio of up to 20. The obtained results suggest that the DRE of CF4 was up to 98% and the energy efficiency was as high as 36.1 g/kWh, which is approximately 3.5 times higher than that obtained using a rotating arc reactor alone. In addition, the thermal efficiency was estimated to be approximately 67%, based on the temperatures of the inlet and outlet gases of the rotating arc-catalytic reactor. Thus, further improvement in the performance can be expected through subsequent thermal management and system optimization. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) causes intestinal discomfort, gut dysfunction, and poor quality of life. This randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of Lactiplantibacillus (Lp., formerly Lactobacillus) plantarum APsulloc 331261 (GTB1TM) from green tea leaves in participants with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). Twenty-seven participants meeting the Rome IV diagnostic criteria were randomized for GTB1 or placebo ingestion for four weeks and follow-up for two weeks. The efficacy endpoints included adequate global relief of symptoms, assessment of intestinal discomfort symptom severity and frequency, stool frequency, satisfaction, and fecal microbiome abundance. Of all participants, 94.4% and 62.5% reported global relief of symptoms in the GTB1 and placebo groups, respectively, with significant differences (p = 0.037). GTB1 significantly reduced the severity and frequency of abdominal pain, bloating, and feeling of incomplete evacuation. The frequencies of diarrhea were decreased −45.89% and −26.76% in the GTB1 and placebo groups, respectively (p = 0.045). Hence, GTB1 ingestion improved IBS-D patient quality of life. After four weeks treatment, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus was higher in the GTB1 than in the placebo group (p = 0.010). Our results showed that GTB1 enhanced intestinal discomfort symptoms, defecation consistency, quality of life, beneficial microbiota, and overall intestinal health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Temperature gradient interaction chromatography (TGIC) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) were applied for the characterization of highly branched polystyrenes (PS) prepared by linking living polystyryl anions using 4-chlorodimethylsilylstyrene. Reversed-phase (RP)-TGIC showed an unexpectedly high resolution according to the number of branches despite significant overlap of the molecular weight as confirmed by MALDI-TOF MS. The enhancement of the resolution is ascribed to the contribution of the nonpolar groups in the branched PS: the dimethylsilyl groups in the branching unit as well as the sec-butyl initiator groups. As the number of branches increases, the number of nonpolar groups increases, which in turn increases the RP-TGIC retention synergistically with increasing molecular weight. In contrast, a poorer resolution was found in normal-phase-TGIC, in which the nonpolar groups reduce the retention. The resolution in RP-TGIC appears superior to that of liquid chromatography at the chromatographic critical condition (LCCC) of PS. It is seemingly due to the synergistic contribution of the incremental PS molecular weight to the functionality in the branched PS in RP-TGIC while only the functionality contributes to the separation in LCCC. This type of resolution enhancement could be utilized efficiently for the analysis of highly branched polymers such as dendrimers or hyperbranched polymers.

Temperature gradient interaction chromatography (TGIC) was applied for the separation of stereoregular poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) according to the tacticity. The three PEMA samples with differing tacticity (rr triad content: 0, 53, and 91%) prepared by anionic polymerization were used. C18 bonded silica and a mixture of C[H.sub.2][Cl.sub.2] and C[H.sub.3]CN (30/70, v/v) were used as stationary and mobile phase, respectively. TGIC was able to separate the PEMA samples, showing the increasing retention in the order of decreasing rr triad contents; however TGIC elution peaks of the three PEMAs were not fully resolved but, rather, were partially overlapped. To isolate the tacticity effect from the molecular weight effect on the TGIC retention, the PEMA samples were fractionated by TGIC, and the accurate molecular weight of the fractions was determined by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The fractions showed a much narrower molecular weight distribution than the mother PEMAs. The TGIC fractions of similar molecular weight but with different tacticity were fully resolved by TGIC, but mother PEMAs were not. These results indicate that the retention in TGIC is affected by both tacticity and molecular weight.
