The design and characteristic analysis on the linear synchronous motor (LSM) for high-speed maglev propulsion is discussed. We describe the techniques for the design, analysis, construction, and experiment of a prototype propulsion system with short-stator LSM. On the basis of a 2-D analytical field analysis, this paper predicts the magnetic field due to dc excitation and three-phase winding current, the back-EMF, and the electromagnetic torque characteristics. The results are validated extensively by comparison with finite-element analysis and experiment. The propulsion performance was tested by using a high-speed rotary type test wheel with linear peripheral speed up to 283 km/h. This paper deals with design and analysis of the moving-magnet linear actuator with cylindrical Halbach array. On the basis of two- dimensional (2-D) finite-element analysis, this paper predicts thrust characteristics according to design parameters such as magnet height, air-gap length, coil thickness, and pole number. Then, we manufactured equipment made on an experimental basis of moving-magnet linear actuator with cylindrical Halbach array by employing parameters obtained from design results. Finally, this paper presents test results such as thrust measurements, which are given to confirm the finite-element analysis, according to load current and mover position. This paper describes the design and analysis of a high-speed and high-power density BLDC motor for a 50-kW, 70 000-rpm class centrifugal compressor. Design criteria and power loss analysis of the high-speed machine structure are described by analytical method, and the results are validated by finite element method. And then, the prototype machine has been fabricated and tested. The experimental results confirmed the validity of the proposed design and analysis scheme of the high-speed BLDC motor. This paper presents an analytical solution to predict magnetic field distribution and to calculate parameters of permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor equipped with surface-mounted magnet using an electromagnetic transfer relations theorem (TRT) in terms of 2-D model in polar co-ordinates system. The analytical results are validated by comparison with finite element (FE) analyses and experimental results. In this paper, a design approach to reduce rotor losses in high-speed permanent magnet machines for turbo-compressor is discussed. In particular, the influence of materials chosen for the retaining sleeve is highlighted. The two topologies of high-speed permanent magnet machines with Inconel718 and Carbon-Fiber/Epoxy sleeves are employed for comparison of computed rotor losses by two-dimensional finite-element method and analytical field anaysis. It is shown that the Carbon-Fiber/Epoxy is superior to Inconel718 in terms of reducing rotor losses. Index Terms--High-speed permanent magnet machines, retaining sleeve, rotor losses.

This paper deals with the analysis of static characteristics in a slotless-type permanent magnet (PM) machine with radially magnetized PM rotor. On the basis of a two-dimensional analytical field analysis, this paper predicts the magnetic field due to PM's and stator winding current, the back EMF and the electromagnetic torque characteristics. In particular, the magnetic vector potential transfer relations developed by Melcher (Melcher's methodology) are used to calculate the field quantities. The results are validated extensively by comparison with nonlinear finite-element method and experiment. This paper describes analytical prediction and measurements for the inductance profile of a linear switched reluctance motor (LSRM). First, analytical solutions for flux density due to mover winding currents are derived, for the case when the mover is located at aligned and unaligned positions. Then, using the inductance at aligned and unaligned positions obtained from two-dimensional (2-D) analytical solutions and Fourier series expansion proposed in this paper, we predict the inductance profile of the LSRM analytically. Finally, inductance measurements are given to confirm the analysis. Index Terms--Analytical calculation, inductance profile, linear switched reluctance motor (LSRM).

This paper deals with the prediction of magnetic field distribution for the disk type permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM). The open-circuit field distribution is predicted using a two-dimensional analytical solution derived in terms of magnetic vector potential. The slotting and skew effect is considered using the relative permeance function. The results are validated extensively by finite element (FE) analyses and measurement. This paper deals with the dynamic characteristic analysis and experiments of moving-magnet linear actuator with cylindrical Halbach array. On the basis of two-dimensional analytical solutions and experiments, control parameters are obtained. Then, a dynamic simulation algorithm is established from a voltage and motion equation. Finally, for various values of frequency, dynamic simulation results for characteristics of voltage, current, and displacement of moving-magnet linear actuator are presented and confirmed through the experiments. This paper deals with the comparison of two types of permanent magnet high-speed machines. Specifically, the effect of permanent magnet magnetization pattern on the rotor losses is investigated. On the basis of analytical field analysis and two-dimensional (2-D) finite-element method, this paper predicts the flux harmonics and rotor losses under no-load condition. It is shown that the Halbach magnetization is superior to parallel magnetization in terms of producing rotor losses. This paper reports on the comparison of two types of high-speed slotless permanent magnet machines with the rotor eccentricity as the motor/generator for an electromechanical battery. Using a two-dimensional finite-element method, this paper deals with the magneto static field and unbalanced forces. Specifically, the advantages of Halbach array are discussed when the rotor has eccentricity. This paper deals with temperature performance of induction heating roll with or without heat pipes. The focus of this paper is to improve nonuniformity of the outer surface temperature of the roll by inserting heat pipes with very high thermal conductivity. In our work, the coupled magneto-thermal finite-element analysis considering skin effect is employed for evaluating the surface temperature. The predicted results are verified with experimental data. This paper deals with the application of cylindrical Halbach array to a permanent magnet motor capable of producing pure rotary motion, pure linear motion, or helical motion. The proposed motor consists of an exterior polar Halbach quadrupole array for a rotary motion and an interior cylindrical Halbach dipole array for a linear one. The two-dimensional finite-element method is employed for predicting the effect of design parameters of the machine.
