The early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE, ~183 Ma) was characterized by marine deoxygenation and the burial of organic-rich sediments at numerous localities worldwide. However, the extent of marine anoxia and its impact on the sulfur cycle during the T-OAE is currently poorly understood. Here, stable sulfur isotopes of reduced metal-bound sulfur (δ34Spyrite) and pyrite sulfur concentrations (SPY) have been analyzed across the Pliensbachian-Toarcian boundary (Pl-To) and the T-OAE from the Sakahogi and Sakuraguchi-dani sections (Japan), which were deposited in the deep and shallow Panthalassic Ocean, respectively. Our data reveal marked positive δ34Spyrite excursions of >10‰ across both the Pl-To and the T-OAE at Sakahogi, coincident with increases in SPY, and a positive excursion of >20‰ at the onset of the T-OAE at Sakuraguchi-dani. Whilst the development of deep-water anoxic/euxinic conditions could have resulted in an enhanced burial of pyrite, and also partly contributed to the positive excursion of δ34Spyrite, variations in δ34Spyrite at Sakahogi were most likely controlled by elevated export production and/or preservation. On the shallow shelf generally low and highly variable SPY and the positive shift in δ34Spyrite were likely attributable mainly to elevated sedimentation rates, with redox playing only a minor role in controlling pyrite abundance. Our discovery of a positive δ34Spyrite excursion across the Pl-To at Sakahogi indicates a hitherto unrecognized perturbation to the deep-water sulfur cycle, potentially associated with increased seafloor organic matter flux and pyrite burial at this time, consistent with a transient interval of anoxia.

International audience; Inflammation is involved in small vessel disease (SVD). We aim to clarify whether inflammation related to white matter hyperintensities (WMH), a key component of SVD, may affect the inflammatory response in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. For this, we sequentially measured 10 circulating inflammatory markers and assessed WMH burden on admission MRI in AIS patients treated with thrombectomy. Of 149 patients, 57 (38.3%) had a high WMH burden (Fazekas≥3). A high WMH burden was associated with 4 markers levels but this association did not remain following multivariable analyses. WMH burden is not associated with a specific inflammatory profile in AIS.

Mobile phones have become a necessity of modern life and are used for various tasks, including audio calls, text messaging, Web surfing, video streaming, gaming, and payments. Most of these tasks consume significant battery power, which makes public charging services increasingly important. Therefore, there are many public places and private stores have started to provide free charging services. However, there are several issues that restrict the popularity of public charging service. First, people cannot easily find charging spots. Second, there is no effective way to monitor charging status and manage the chargers. Third, a free charging service increases business expenses. To address these issues, we developed a Internet of Things (IoT)-based wireless charging service system, which is called AnyCharge. There are five major components of AnyCharge: 1) a Wi-Fi enabled wireless charger; 2) an IoT gateway; 3) a cloud-based management platform; 4) a secure Wi-Fi auto-connection algorithm; and 5) a mobile app. The charger is connected to an IoT gateway through Wi-Fi using our secure auto-connection algorithm, and the gateways are linked to the cloud server using message queue telemetry transport. The administrators can monitor and control chargers using the management platform. In addition, Android and iOS apps have been created to allow users to locate free chargers and find the shortest route to the nearest charging spot. We initiated a large-scale experimental deployment in Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, and Japan. More than 200 chargers have been installed in different places, including restaurants, hospitals, telecom stores, and hotels. Statistics shows that there is a strong demand for public charging services.

Background The term “neurosyphilis” refers to infection of the central nervous system (CNS) by Treponema pallidum. It can occur at any time after initial infection. Early in the course of syphilis, the most common forms of neurosyphilis involve the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), meninges, and vasculature (asymptomatic meningitis, symptomatic meningitis, and meningovascular disease). Late in disease, the most common forms involve the brain and spinal cord parenchyma (general paralysis of the insane and tabes dorsalis). Methods A 31-year-old man who suddenly developed a new onset generalized tonic clonic seizure, was admitted to the emergency department. He had no history of epilepsy and denied any vision or gait problems. The brain MRI showed no abnormalities. He had a history of rapid plasma reagent (RPR) titer 1:32 and a positive fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) test in 2017. However, the RPR result was non-reactive when he retested a week later and therefore was not diagnosed with syphilis and did not get treated at that time. His most recent RPR titer was 1:16. HIV serology and other STD tests were all negative. His wife and his 3 kids were negative for syphilis. Due to serological evidence of syphilis and neurological symptoms, we arranged him to get a lumbar puncture to rule out neurosyphilis. Results His CSF study showed positive venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL), WBC cell count 44 cells/ul (lymphocytes 80%, Neutrophil 20%), Glucose 50 mg/dl, Protein 75 mg/dl. Based on the CSF study, he was diagnosed with neurosyphilis and was treated with intravenous Penicillin G 3-4 million units every 4 hours for 14 days, followed by Benzathine Penicillin 2.4million units intramuscularly on day 21. Conclusion This is an unusual case because his false negative RPR result has hindered the prompt diagnosis and management of syphilis. RPR is a nontreponemal test and therefore it is not always reliable as a diagnostic criteria. False negatives in RPR may occur in certain conditions such as in early primary or in late stage syphilis and prozone phenomenon. This case illustrates the importance of using a reverse sequence algorithm in diagnosing syphilis. Thorough history taking is also crucial in conjunction with serological tests to determine the diagnosis and to ensure appropriate treatment. Disclosures All Authors: No reported disclosures
