8. Assessing Personalized Recommendation Services Using Expectancy Disconfirmation Theory

Abstract

There is an accuracy-diversity dilemma with personalized recommendation services. Some researchers believe that accurate recommendations might reinforce customer satisfaction. However, others claim that highly accurate recommendations and customer satisfaction are not always correlated. Thus, this study attempts to establish the causal factors that determine customer satisfaction with personalized recommendation services to reconcile these incompatible views. This paper employs statistical analyses of simulation to investigate an accuracy-diversity dilemma with personalized recommendation services. To this end, we develop a personalized recommendation system and measured accuracy, diversity, and customer satisfaction using a simulation method. The results show that accurate recommendations positively affected customer satisfaction, whereas diverse recommendations negatively affected customer satisfaction. Also, customer satisfaction was associated with the recommendation product size when neighborhood size was optimal in accuracy. Thus, these results offer insights into personalizing recommendation service providers. The providers must identify customers’ preferences correctly and suggest more accurate recommendations. Furthermore, accuracy is not always improved as the number of product recommendation increases. Accordingly, providers must propose adequate number of product recommendation.

Abstract

Many existing studies related to recommendation systems have made great efforts to increase performance‐oriented evaluation metrics such as accuracy, recall, F1 value, MAE, diversity, and so on. However, these metrics for measuring performance do not provide any explanation of how such recommendation systems contribute to a product provider's sales. Recently, to investigate the factors affecting product sales, researchers have started to use the product recommendation network, which is a graphical presentation of the relationship between products that are purchased simultaneously. In this research, we are going to identify factors that influence the demand for head books (top sales books) and tail books (non‐top sales books) in academic and technology books, because the characteristics of specialized books are different from those of general books. To test the model, online sales data of medicine and science books of G Publishing, the leading medical book publishing and distribution company in Korea, are used. We employ social network analysis and multiple regression analysis to investigate demand effect of the book recommendation network. The former is used to measure centralities of the book recommendation network, while the latter is used to measure the demand effect. Furthermore, we inspect whether there are different attributes between head books and tail books that are related to the book demand in recommendation networks. This study is the first attempt to examine the demand effect of the recommendation network of academic and technology books. The following results are obtained general book sales of an online bookstore follow a long‐tail law, while sales of academic and technology books follow Pareto's law distribution. This study investigated attributes that might be linked to demand effect of head books and tail books in the recommendation network of academic and technology books. Abstract

In a smart tourism ecosystem, travel communication websites play a critical role in choosing destinations and hotels. This research suggests a travel recommender system for automating word-of-mouth (WOM) effects and providing personalized travel-planning services to tourists. Collaborative filtering (CF)-based recommender systems have been extensively employed for personalization services in diverse areas; the basic principle of CF is WOM communication. This research proposes a travel recommender system that helps a tourist build his/her personalized travel plan based on CF and constraint satisfaction filtering. Constraint satisfaction filtering is adopted to profile a tourist's needs and circumstances. For this purpose, this research modifies the existing constraint satisfaction method to an approximate constraint satisfaction filtering method that incorporates indifference intervals into constraints. We build a prototype system and a benchmark system to evaluate the effectiveness, usability, and novelty of the proposed travel recommender system. The experimental results demonstrate a methodology for performing personalized tourist's travel planning and automating WOM communication outperforms the benchmark system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Byline: Do Hyun Ahn, Jae Kyeong Kim, Il Young Choi, Yoon Ho Cho With the advance of e-commerce, the importance of recommender systems grows larger than before. Collaborative filtering is the most successful recommendation method, but its widespread use has exposed some problems such as sparsity and scalability. To overcome such limitations, this paper proposes hybrid recommendation methodologies based on web usage mining and dimensionality reduction techniques to enhance the recommendation quality and performance of current collaborative filtering-based recommender systems. Web usage mining populates the rating database by tracking customers' shopping behaviours on the web, thereby leading to better quality recommendations. The product taxonomy and SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) are used to improve the performance of searching for nearest neighbours through dimensionality reduction of the rating database. Experiments on real e-commerce data show that the proposed methodologies provide higher quality recommendations and better performance than existing collaborative filtering methodologies.
