Abstract

Small number of clusters combined with cluster level heterogeneity poses a great challenge for the data analysis. We have published a weighted Jackknife approach to address this issue applying weighted cluster means as the basic estimators. The current study proposes a new version of the weighted delete-one-cluster Jackknife analytic framework, which employs Ordinary Least Squares or Generalized Least Squares estimators as the fundamentals. Algorithms for computing estimated variances of the study estimators have also been derived. Wald test statistics can be further obtained, and the statistical comparison in the outcome means of two conditions is determined using the cluster permutation procedure. The simulation studies show that the proposed framework produces estimates with higher precision and improved power for statistical hypothesis testing compared to other methods. 29. Acid–basereaction of a super‐photoacidwith a cooperative amide hydrogen‐bondedchain

Abstract

The excited‐state proton transfer (ESPT) of the strong photoacid, N‐methyl‐7‐hydroxyquinolium (NM7HQ+), was studied in the presence of N‐methylbenzamide (NMB) as a base in the aprotic polar solvent, acetonitrile. According to the Benesi–Hildebrand relation, it was revealed that the hydrogen (H)‐bonded complex of NM7HQ+and NMB exists in the ground state in a 1:1 stoichiometry with the association constant of 22.2 ± 1.7 M−1. The fluorescence quenching of the 1:1 complex was observed to follow the Stern–Volmer relation with the molecularity of one for NMB indicating that the ESPT of NM7HQ+occurs with the H‐bonded chain of two NMB molecules. Our study highlights the cooperative nature of H‐bonding in the chemical reactivity of amide in acid–base reactions as has already been reported for alcohol. The excited‐state proton transfer of a strong photoacid was found to occur to a hydrogen‐bonded amide dimer. For the bind step of the acid–base reaction, an additional amide molecule clusters to the dimer to dissociate the acid–base encounter complex. The study reports the cooperative nature of H‐bond clustering that enhances the chemical reactivity of amides in acid–base reactions.

30. The value of preserving endangered folk games using the contingent valuation method.

Abstract

This study aims to estimate the value of preserving Uiseong Gama Ssaum (traditional Korean palanquin fighting) as an endangered folk game, using the contingent valuation method (CVM). To reduce the tendency to exaggerate the value estimation, one of the CVM's acknowledged limitations, the respondents' answers were reaffirmed through two stages of confirmation questions. The study established that the value of preserving Uiseong Gama Ssaum as an endangered folk game was set at 7,259 Korean won (KRW) (= 6.06 USD). The results also suggest that the respondents' sense of cultural uniqueness was positively associated with a willingness to pay (WTP). The study is meaningful in estimating the economic value of endangered folk games and justifying their preservation based on the provision of a quantified standard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
