Rationale and Objectives: To compare the image quality between conventional and synthetic aperture (SA) imaging in breast ultrasound (US). Materials and Methods: Twenty-four patients with 31 breast lesions were included in our study. The US data were processed with SA algorithm. For quantitative analysis, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were calculated. For qualitative analysis, conventional and SA images were reviewed by three radiologists and diagnostic preference (conspicuity, margin sharpness, and contrast) was assessed. The radiologists also determined whether artifacts were present. Parameters were analyzed using a paired t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and chi-square test. Results: The mean CNRs were higher in SA images compared with conventional images (mean, 2.56 versus 2.28, P = .004). The mean SNRs were higher in SA images compared with conventional images (31.62 versus 25.26, P < .0001). SA images were considered as being "better" or "much better" in 16-23 (51.6-74.2%) lesions of total 31 lesions for conspicuity, in 17-24 (45.2%-77.4%) for margin sharpness, and in 13-23 (41.9%-74.2%) for contrast. Significant preferences in SA images were demonstrated (conspicuity, P < .05 for all radiologists; margin sharpness and contrast in two radiologists). Refraction and speckle artifacts were less frequently observed in SA images (refraction, P < .05 for all radiologists; speckle, P < .05 for two radiologists), whereas reflection artifacts were more frequent in SA images (P < .05 in two radiologists). Objective: To determine whether change in the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) before and after neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (CRT) for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) would more accurately predict pathological complete response (pCR) than analysing the pre- or post-CRT ADC individually.Methods: 76 patients with LARC (≥ T3 or lymph node-positive) underwent pre- and post-CRT, 1.5-T diffusion-weighted imaging. A blinded radiologist measured the tumour ADCs. The three measures were compared with regard to CR and non-CR. To calculate accuracy for determining pCR, receiver-operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was applied to the three measures.Results: The post-CRT ADC (1.43 ± 0.10) (× 10(-3) mm(2)/s) and the percentage change (70.0 ± 23.5%) in the CR (n = 11) were significantly higher than those in the non-CR (n = 65) (1.14 ± 0.18, 30.2 ± 21.7%, respectively)(both, P < 0.0001). The pre-CRT ADC (0.85 ± 0.10) of the pCR did not differ significantly from that of the non-pCR (0.88 ± 0.14)(P = 0.4094). The post-CRT ADC showed comparable relative accuracy for determining pCR to that of the percentage change (P = 0.788). However, overall accuracy of the former (87%) was higher than that of the latter (75%) (P = 0.049).Conclusion: Analyzing post-CRT ADC alone can reliably differentiate pCR from non-pCR in LARC. Objective: To compare the performance of computer-aided detection (CAD) for CT colonography (CTC) with and without electronic cleansing (EC) in a high-risk population tagged with a faecal tagging (FT) protocol.Methods: Thirty-two patients underwent CTC followed by same-day colonoscopy. All patients underwent bowel preparation and FT with barium and gastrografin. Each CTC dataset was processed with colon CAD with and without EC. Per-polyp sensitivity was calculated. The average number of false-positive (FP) results and their causes were also analysed and compared.Results: Eighty-six polyps were detected in 29 patients. Per-polyp sensitivities of CAD with EC (93.8% and 100%) were higher than those without EC (84.4% and 87.5%) for polyps >or=6 mm and >or=10 mm, respectively. However, the differences were not significant. The average number (6.3) of FPs of CAD with EC was significantly larger than that (3.1) without EC. The distribution of FPs in both CAD settings was also significantly different. The most common cause of FPs was the ileocaecal valve in both datasets. However, untagged faeces was a significantly less common cause of FPs with EC, EC-related artefacts being more common.Conclusion: Electronic cleansing has the potential to improve per-polyp sensitivity of CTC CAD, although the significantly larger number of FPs with EC remains to be improved. The purpose was to compare two-dimensional (2D) magnetic resonance pancreatography (MRP) with 3D MRP to evaluate intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN). Thirty-four patients (22 men, 12 women; age range, 45-80 years) with IPMN (n = 40) were examined with MRP on 2D and 3D sequences. Two readers independently reviewed the images to assess the overall image quality, artifacts, lesion location, communication with main pancreatic duct, and potential for malignancy. The readers assigned their confidence level (1-5) for predicting ductal communication of the lesion. The results of MRP were compared with endoscopic retrograde pancreatography and surgical and histopathologic findings. Studies obtained with 3D MRP were of significantly higher technical quality than those obtained with 2D MRP. Although 3D MRP showed higher area under the ROC curve (Az) values for predicting ductal communication of the lesion, there was no statistical significance between Az values of 2D and 3D MRP (Az for 2D = 0.821, 0.864 for readers 1 and 2, respectively, and Az for 3D= 0.964, 0.921). Accuracies for discriminating benign from malignant lesions were 70 and 67.5% (reader 1 and 2, respectively, for 2D) and 62.5 and 80.1% (3D). 3D MRP showed superior image quality to that of 2D MRP but did not increase the diagnostic accuracy for predicting ductal communication of the lesion. Initially, a set of guidelines for the use of ultrasound contrast agents was published in 2004 dealing only with liver applications. A second edition of the guidelines in 2008 reflected changes in the available contrast agents and updated the guidelines for the liver, as well as implementing some non-liver applications. Time has moved on, and the need for international guidelines on the use of CEUS in the liver has become apparent. The present document describes the third iteration of recommendations for the hepatic use of contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) using contrast specific imaging techniques. This joint WFUMB-EFSUMB initiative has implicated experts from major leading ultrasound societies worldwide. These liver CEUS guidelines are simultaneously published in the official journals of both organizing federations (i.e., Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology for WFUMB and Ultraschall in der Medizin/European Journal of Ultrasound for EFSUMB). These guidelines and recommendations provide general advice on the use of all currently clinically available ultrasound contrast agents (UCA). They are intended to create standard protocols for the use and administration of UCA in liver applications on an international basis and improve the management of patients worldwide. The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of color Doppler twinkling artifacts (CDTAs) in the evaluation of gallbladder adenomyomatosis with differently colored Doppler frequencies. An ultrasound was performed by an experienced radiologist in 17 patients with typical gallbladder adenomyomatosis. Two abdominal radiologists retrospectively evaluated the anatomic locations, the intensity of 69 CDTAs on 1.8 MHz and 4.0 MHz Doppler frequencies, and the intensity of the corresponding comet-tail artifacts. Statistical analysis was performed using the Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis test. The intensity of the CDTAs was significantly greater than that of the comet-tail artifacts, regardless of the color Doppler frequency and anatomic location (p < 0.001). The intensity of the CDTAs on 1.8 MHz was significantly higher than that on 4.0 MHz color Doppler frequency (p < 0.05). In conclusion, CDTAs may be useful in recognizing gallbladder adenomyomatosis, and 1.8 MHz color Doppler frequency is more highly recommended than 4.0 MHz for the visualization of CDTAs. Background: To assess the added value of 80 kVp images to weighted average 120 kVp images for detecting hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) using dual-source, dual-energy MDCT. Materials and Methods: Forty-one HCCs in 42 patients who underwent liver transplantation (LT) were included. All patients underwent quadruple-phase CT using a 64-row dual-source, dual-energy MDCT with 80 kVp and 140 kVp. For 120 kVp, a linear blending ratio of 0.3 was chosen. Interval reviews for both simulated 120 kVp images without and with pure 80 kVp data were performed independently by two radiologists. They detected HCCs using a 4-point confidence scale. Tumor-to-liver contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) was calculated and compared between the 80 kVp and simulated 120 kVp images. The additional diagnostic value of 80 kVp images was evaluated by jackknife alternative free-response receiver-operating characteristic (JAFROC) analysis. Results: There were 41 HCCs on pathology and 37 of the 41 HCCs were depicted on CT scan. The mean CNR of the 37 HCCs in late arterial and portal-phase images was significantly better in the 80 kVp images than in 120 kVp images. The average JAFROC figure of merit, however, was not significantly improved when 80 kVp was added. Furthermore, the number of false-positives was significantly increased in reader 1 when adding 80kVp data. Conclusion: The addition of 80 kVp CT images to simulated 120 kVp images did not significantly improve the detection of HCCs despite of the significantly better CNR of 80 kVp images. Background Attenuation coefficient (AC) and shear-wave speed (SWS) are established US markers for assessing patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), while shear-wave dispersion slope (DS) is not. Purpose To assess the relationship between the multiparametric US imaging markers DS, AC, and SWS and liver histopathologic necroinflammation in patients with MASLD. Materials and Methods This international multicenter prospective study enrolled consecutive patients with biopsy-proven MASLD between June 2019 and March 2023. Before biopsy, all participants underwent multiparametric US, and measurements of DS, AC, and SWS were obtained. Multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to assess the association of clinical variables and imaging markers with pathologic findings. The diagnostic performance of imaging markers for determining inflammation grade, steatosis grade, and fibrosis stage was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results A total of 124 participants (mean age, 53 years ± 15 [SD]; 62 males) were evaluated. In multivariable regression, lobular inflammation was associated with DS (regression coefficient, 0.06; P = .02), alanine aminotransferase level (regression coefficient, 0.002; P = .002), and Hispanic or Latino ethnicity (regression coefficient, -0.68; P = .047), while steatosis was associated with AC (regression coefficient, 3.66; P < .001) and fibrosis was associated with SWS (regression coefficient, 2.02; P < .001) and body mass index (regression coefficient, 0.05; P = .02). DS achieved an AUC of 0.72 (95% CI: 0.63, 0.82) for identifying participants with inflammation grade A2 or higher (moderate to severe inflammation). AC showed excellent performance for identifying participants with grade S1 (mild) or higher steatosis (AUC, 0.92 [95% CI: 0.87, 0.97]), while SWS showed excellent performance for identifying participants with fibrosis stage F2 or higher (clinically significant fibrosis) (AUC, 0.91 [95% CI: 0.86, 0.96]). Of the three US markers, SWS showed the highest AUC (0.81 [95% CI: 0.74, 0.89]) for the diagnosis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis. Conclusion Of the three US imaging markers (DS, AC, and SWS), DS was most associated with lobular inflammation grade at histologic examination and demonstrated fair diagnostic performance in distinguishing moderate to severe lobular inflammation. Previously identified under the single designation of Aerococcus urinae , three distinct taxonomic species have been distinguished as Aerococcus loyolae, Aerococcus mictus, and Aerococcus tenax . Bacterial isolates from the human urinary microbiome have been extensively studied for their antibiotic resistance; however, little work has been done on those isolates that are difficult to grow in vitro . This study was designed to qualify a serum-based medium, New York City Broth III (NYCIII), and a broth microdilution method to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of previously underreported or undescribed microbes that have a difficult time growing in standard Mueller-Hinton broth. Here, we demonstrate that NYCIII microbroth dilution can be an effective method for the determination of antibiotic susceptibility of species found in the human urinary microbiome. We show that this method serves well to characterize fastidious and anaerobic urinary microbes that have no Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines, including several in the families Aerococcaceae , Lactobacillaceae , or Actinomycetaceae . Previous studies using expanded quantitative urine culture reveal that urine samples from clinical patients are commonly polymicrobial in composition. Thus, we test whether NYCIII can serve as a viable harmonized medium, capable of supporting antibiotic susceptibility testing in a range of fastidious, non-fastidious, and anaerobic urinary microbes. We propose this methodology to be standardized comparable to CLSI standards to allow for resistance testing in uncharacterized urinary bacteria., Importance: Antibiotic susceptibilities of fastidious and anaerobic bacteria of the human urinary microbiome are largely underreported due to difficulty in growing them in the lab environment. The current standard medium, Muller-Hinton broth, has difficulty supporting the growth of many of these species, leaving microbiologists without a standardized method. To address this need, this study offers a methodology to survey susceptibilities in a high-throughput manner of these understudied microbes with a proposed harmonized medium, NYCIII, which is capable of supporting the growth of both fastidious and non-fastidious urinary microbes. The recognition of the Aerococcus urinae complex (AUC) as an emerging uropathogen has led to growing concerns due to a limited understanding of its disease spectrum and antibiotic resistance profiles. Here, we investigated the prevalence of macrolide resistance within urinary AUC isolates, shedding light on potential genetic mechanisms. Phenotypic testing revealed a high rate of macrolide resistance: 45%, among a total of 189 urinary AUC isolates. Genomic analysis identified integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) as carriers of the macrolide resistance gene ermA , suggesting horizontal gene transfer as a mechanism of resistance. Furthermore, comparison with publicly available genomes of related pathogens revealed high ICE sequence homogeneity, highlighting the potential for cross-species dissemination of resistance determinants. Understanding mechanisms of resistance is crucial for developing effective surveillance strategies and improving antibiotic use. Furthermore, the findings underscore the importance of considering the broader ecological context of resistance dissemination, emphasizing the need for community-level surveillance to combat the spread of antibiotic resistance within the urinary microbiome.

Average nucleotide identity analysis, based on whole genome sequences of 115 strains previously identified as Aerococcus urinae , an emerging uropathogen, discriminates at least six unique genomic taxa. The whole genome analysis affords clearer species boundaries over 16S rRNA gene sequencing and traditional phenotypic approaches for the identification and phylogenetic organization of Aerococcus species. The newly described species can be differentiated by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight analysis of protein signatures. We propose the emendation of the description of A. urinae (type strain ATCC 51268 T = CCUG 34223 T =NCFB 2893) and the names of Aerococcus tenax sp. nov. (ATCC TSD-302 T = DSM 115700 T = CCUG 76531 T =NR-58630 T ) , Aerococcus mictus sp. nov. (ATCC TSD-301 T = DSM 115699 T = CCUG 76532 T =NR-58629 T ) , and Aerococcus loyolae sp. nov. (ATCC TSD-300 T = DSM 115698 T = CCUG 76533 T =NR-58628 T ) for three of the newly identified genomic taxa.

The World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) is addressing the issue of incidental findings with a series of position papers to give advice on characterization and management. The biliary system (gallbladder and biliary tree) is the third most frequent site for incidental findings. This first part of the position paper on incidental findings of the biliary system is related to general aspects, gallbladder polyps and other incidental findings of the gallbladder wall. Available evidence on prevalence, diagnostic work-up, malignancy risk, follow-up and treatment is summarized with a special focus on ultrasound techniques. Increased demand for plastics leads to a large amount of plastic manufacturing, which is accompanied by inappropriate disposal of plastics. The by-products of these waste plastics are microplastics (MPs; less than 5 nm in size), which are produced because of various environmental and physicochemical factors, posing hazardous effects to the ecosystem, such as the death of marine organisms due to the swallowing of plastic specks of no nutritional value. Therefore, the collection, preparation, identification, and recycling of these microsized plastics have become imperative. The pretreatment of MPs requires numerous chemical agents comprising strong acids, bases, and oxidizing agents. However, there is limited research on the chemical resistance of various MPs to these substances to date. In this study, the chemical resistance of five species of MPs (high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polypropylene) to sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrogen peroxide, potassium hydroxide, and sodium hydroxide was studied. The MPs were reacted with these chemical reagents at preset temperatures and durations, and variations in morphology and chemical structures were detected when the MPs were reacted with mineral acids, such as sulfuric acid. The data pertaining to these changes in MP properties could be a significant reference for future studies on MP pretreatment with strong acids, bases, and oxidizing agents.

Various omics-based biomarkers related to the occurrence, progression, and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) have been identified. In this study, we attempted to identify gut microbiome-based biomarkers and detect their association with host gene expression in the initiation and progression of CRC by integrating analysis of the gut mucosal metagenome, RNA sequencing, and sociomedical factors. We performed metagenome and RNA sequencing on colonic mucosa samples from 13 patients with advanced CRC (ACRC), 10 patients with high-risk adenoma (HRA), and 7 normal control (NC) individuals. All participants completed a questionnaire on sociomedical factors. The interaction and correlation between changes in the microbiome and gene expression were assessed using bioinformatic analysis. When comparing HRA and NC samples, which can be considered to represent the process of tumor initiation, 28 genes and five microbiome species were analyzed with correlation plots. When comparing ACRC and HRA samples, which can be considered to represent the progression of CRC, seven bacterial species and 21 genes were analyzed. When comparing ACRC and NC samples, 16 genes and five bacterial species were analyzed, and four correlation plots were generated. A network visualizing the relationship between bacterial and host gene expression in the initiation and progression of CRC indicated that Clostridium spiroforme and Tyzzerella nexilis were hub bacteria in the development and progression of CRC. Our study revealed the interactions of and correlation between the colonic mucosal microbiome and host gene expression to identify potential roles of the microbiome in the initiation and progression of CRC. Burnout among radiologists has recently emerged as an issue that poses a threat to patient safety. Burnout adversely effects the quality of patient care and may lead to health problems in physicians. Approximately 84% of board-certified radiologists working in large hospitals in Korea responded that they had experienced burnout at least once. Claudin (CLDN) is a tight junction protein found in human epithelial cells and its altered expression is known to be associated with the progression of gastric cancer. We aimed to investigate the differential expression of CLDN-4 in early gastric cancer (EGC) according to its clinicopathological characteristics. We enrolled 53 patients with EGC who underwent surgical gastric resection from January 2007 to December 2018. The staining intensity of the tumor cells was scored as 0-3, and the percentage of staining was scored as 0-5; high expression was defined if the intensity plus percentage score was 7 or 8, and low expression was defined if the score was 0-6. Among the 53 patients, 16 (30.2%) showed low CLDN-4 expression, while 37 (69.8%) had high CLDN-4 expression. High CLDN-4 expression was significantly associated with intestinal-type EGC (low: 12.5% vs. high: 56.8%, p = 0.003), open-type atrophic change (low: 60.0% vs. high: 90.9%, p = 0.011), and the presence of synchronous tumors (0 vs. 32.4%, p = 0.010), and all 12 EGCs with synchronous tumors showed high CLDN-4 expression. However, expression of CLDN-3, a typical intestinal phenotype CLDN, was neither correlated with CLDN-4 expression nor associated with synchronous tumors. Taken together, high CLDN-4 expression may be considered as an auxiliary tool for screening synchronous tumors in patients with EGC.

A microsatellite instability (MSI) test is crucial for screening for HNPCC (Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer; Lynch syndrome) and optimization of colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment. Mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency is a predictor for good response of immune checkpoint inhibitors in various malignancies. In this study, we evaluated the results of a newly developed plasma-based real-time PCR kit for the detection of MSI in CRC patients. We assessed a peptide nucleotide acid (PNA) probe-mediated real-time PCR test (U-TOP MSI Detection Kit Plus) that determines MSI status by using amplicon melting analysis of five markers (NR21, NR24, NR27, BAT25, and BAT26) from plasma. Eighty-four CRC patients (46 dMMR and 38 pMMR) with colorectal cancer were analyzed. The concordance rate of MSI status assessment between the plasma kit and IHC was 63.0% in dMMR patients (29/46), but in the pMMR evaluation, a 100% (38/38) concordance rate was observed. In the evaluation of the performance of a custom tissue U-TOP MSI Detection Kit and plasma kit in 28 patients, sensitivity, specificity, PPV (positive predictive value) and NPV (negative predictive value) of plasma kit were 68.4, 100, 100, and 44.4%, respectively, with the tissue U-TOP MSI Detection Kit. Background Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common in the general population but identifying patients with high-risk nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) who are candidates for pharmacologic therapy remains a challenge. Purpose To develop a score to identify patients with high-risk NASH, defined as NASH with an NAFLD activity score (NAS) of 4 or greater and clinically significant fibrosis (stage 2 [F2] or higher). Materials and Methods This was a cross-sectional secondary analysis of data prospectively collected between April 2017 and March 2019 for a group of patients with NAFLD in Japan (Japan NAFLD, the derivation data set) with contemporaneous two-dimensional shear-wave elastography and biopsy-proven NAFLD (age range, 20-89 years). Three US markers (liver stiffness [LS, measured in kilopascals], attenuation coefficient [AC, measured in decibels per centimeter per megahertz], and dispersion slope [DS, measured in meters per second per kilohertz]) were determined, together with aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and the AST-to-ALT ratio. The best-fit multivariate logistic regression model for identifying patients with high-risk NASH was determined. Diagnostic performance was assessed by using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The findings were validated in an independent data set (Korea NAFLD; age range, 20-78 years). Results The Japan NAFLD data set included 111 patients (mean age, 53 years ± 18 [standard deviation]; 57 men), 84 (76%) with NASH. The Korea NAFLD data set included 102 patients (mean age, 48 years ± 18; 43 men), 55 (36%) with NASH. The most predictive model (LAD NASH score) combined LS, AC, and DS. Performance was satisfactory in both the derivation sample (AUC, 0.86; 95% CI: 0.79, 0.93) and the validation sample (AUC, 0.88; 95% CI: 0.80, 0.95). The LAD NASH score showed a positive predictive value of 86.5% and a negative predictive value of 87.5% for high-risk NASH in the derivation sample. Purpose:  To assess the diagnostic performance of the normalized local variance (NLV) ultrasound technique in the detection of the fatty liver using histopathology as a reference standard., Materials and Methods:  We prospectively enrolled 194 consecutive patients with clinical suspicion of diffuse liver disease or history of liver transplantation. Conventional grayscale ultrasound and NLV examinations were performed and immediately followed by liver biopsies. The degrees of fatty liver, necroinflammatory activity, and fibrosis stage were evaluated by histopathological assessment. The diagnostic performance of the NLV values in detecting each grade of fatty liver was determined using receiver operating characteristics analyses, and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to identify variables significantly associated with the NLV values., Results:  The number of patients in each degree of fatty liver and hepatic fibrosis was 118/37/26/13 and 81/68/24/6/14 for none/mild/moderate/severe steatosis and F0 / F1/F2 / F3/F4 fibrosis on histopathological examinations, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve and optimal cut-off NLV value for detecting fatty liver of varying degrees were 0.911 and 1.095 for ≥ S1, 0.974 and 1.055 for ≥ S2, and 0.954 and 1.025 for ≥ S3, respectively. Multivariate analyses revealed that not fibrosis or inflammation but rather the degree of steatosis was associated with the NLV value., Conclusion:  The NLV value demonstrated excellent diagnostic performance for detecting varying degrees of fatty liver, and the degree of steatosis on histopathological examinations was the only significant factor affecting the NLV value., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (Thieme. New ultrasound methods that can be used to quantitatively assess liver fat content have recently been developed. These quantitative ultrasound (QUS) methods are based on the analysis of radiofrequency echoes detected by the transducer, allowing calculation of parameters for quantifying the fat in the liver. In this position paper, after a section dedicated to the importance of quantifying liver steatosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and another section dedicated to the assessment of liver fat with magnetic resonance, the current clinical studies performed using QUS are summarized. These new methods include spectral-based techniques and techniques based on envelope statistics. The spectral-based techniques that have been used in clinical studies are those estimating the attenuation coefficient and those estimating the backscatter coefficient. Clinical studies that have used tools based on the envelope statistics of the backscattered ultrasound are those performed by using the acoustic structure quantification or other parameters derived from it, such as the normalized local variance, and that performed by estimating the speed of sound. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the severity of hyperechoic pancreas (HP) on ultrasonography (US) and glycemic progression., Methods: In total, 1,386 participants who underwent abdominal US as part of health examinations between December 2008 and May 2014 were included in this retrospective study. We classified pancreatic echogenicity on a 4-point scale, and compared it using two distinct criteria: fatty pancreas (FP) 1 criterion (normal vs. ≥mild HP) and FP2 criterion (normal/mild HP vs. ≥moderate HP). According to the presence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), participants were subdivided into four groups: non-NAFLD and non-HP, isolated NAFLD, isolated HP, and HP with NAFLD. Glycemic progression was defined as progression from normoglycemia to prediabetes or diabetes or progression from prediabetes to diabetes., Results: During the follow-up (median, 5.9 years), 262 of the 1,386 participants developed glycemic progression. Using FP2, the probability of glycemic progression across the four subgroups showed cumulative aggravation for NAFLD and HP (all P<0.05). Isolated HP showed a higher probability of glycemic progression than isolated NAFLD according to FP2 (P<0.001). The highest probability of glycemic progression was observed in patients with both NAFLD and HP (P<0.001). The hazard ratio for glycemic progression increased with the severity of HP., Conclusion: Increasing severity of HP on US was found to be significantly correlated with glycemic progression. Moreover, isolated HP of moderate or greater severity predicted glycemic progression independent of NAFLD.
