This study provides an analysis of atmospheric neutrino oscillations at the ESSnuSB far detector facility. The prospects of the two cylindrical Water Cherenkov detectors with a total fiducial mass of 540 kt are investigated over 10 years of data taking in the standard three-flavor oscillation scenario. We present the confidence intervals for the determination of mass ordering, $\theta_{23}$ octant as well as for the precisions on $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ and $|\Delta m_{31}^2|$. It is shown that mass ordering can be resolved by $3\sigma$ CL ($5\sigma$ CL) after 4 years (10 years) regardless of the true neutrino mass ordering. Correspondingly, the wrong $\theta_{23}$ octant could be excluded by $3\sigma$ CL after 4 years (7 years) in the case where the true neutrino mass ordering is normal ordering (inverted ordering). Neutrino oscillation experiments provide a unique window in exploring several new physics scenarios beyond the standard three flavour. One such scenario is quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillation which tends to destroy the interference pattern of neutrinos reaching the far detector from the source. In this work, we study the decoherence in neutrino oscillation in the context of the ESSnuSB experiment. We consider the energy-independent decoherence parameter and derive the analytical expressions for P$_{\mu e}$ and P$_{\mu \mu}$ probabilities in vacuum. We have computed the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the decoherence parameters namely, $\Gamma_{21}$ and $\Gamma_{32}$ and found that the constraints on $\Gamma_{21}$ are competitive compared to the DUNE bounds and better than the most stringent LBL ones from MINOS/MINOS+. We have also investigated the impact of decoherence on the ESSnuSB measurement of the Dirac CP phase $\delta_{\rm CP}$ and concluded that it remains robust in the presence of new physics., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, Version accepted for publication in JHEP

In this paper we study non-standard interactions mediated by a scalar field (SNSI) in the context of ESSnuSB experiment. In particular we study the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the SNSI parameters and also study the impact of SNSI in the measurement of the leptonic CP phase $\delta_{\rm CP}$. Existence of SNSI modifies the neutrino mass matrix and this modification can be expressed in terms of three diagonal real parameters ($\eta_{ee}$, $\eta_{\mu\mu}$ and $\eta_{\tau\tau}$) and three off-diagonal complex parameters ($\eta_{e \mu}$, $\eta_{e\tau}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$). Our study shows that the upper bounds on the parameters $\eta_{\mu\mu}$, $\eta_{\tau\tau}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$ depend upon how $\Delta m^2_{31}$ is minimized in the theory. However, this is not the case when one tries to measure the impact of SNSI on $\delta_{\rm CP}$. Further, we show that the CP sensitivity of ESSnuSB can be completely lost for certain values of $\eta_{ee}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$ for which the appearance channel probability becomes independent of $\delta_{\rm CP}$., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, Version accepted for publication in Phys. We compare the point-wise and segment-wise descriptions of the traffic system. Using real data from the Taiwan highway system with a tremendous volume of segment-wise data, we find that the segment-wise description is much more informative of the evolution of the system during congestion. Congestion is characterized by a loopy trajectory in the fundamental diagram. By considering the area enclosed by the loop, we find that there are two types of congestion dynamics -- moderate flow and serious congestion. They are different in terms of whether the area enclosed vanishes. Data extracted from the time delays of individual vehicles show that the area enclosed is a measure of the economic loss due to congestion. We demonstrate high fidelity entangling quantum gates within a chain of five trapped ion qubits by optimally shaping optical fields that couple to multiple collective modes of motion. We individually address qubits with segmented optical pulses to construct multipartite entangled states in a programmable way. This approach enables both high fidelity and fast quantum gates that can be scaled to larger qubit registers for quantum computation and simulation.

We stabilize a chosen radiofrequency beat note between two optical fields derived from the same mode-locked laser pulse train, in order to coherently manipulate quantum information. This scheme does not require access or active stabilization of the laser repetition rate. We implement and characterize this external lock, in the context of two-photon stimulated Raman transitions between the hyperfine ground states of trapped 171-Yb+ quantum bits.

Low-temperature transport experiments on a p-type GaAs quantum dot capacitively coupled to a quantum point contact are presented. The time-averaged as well as time-resolved detection of charging events of the dot are demonstrated and they are used to extract the tunnelling rates into and out of the quantum dot. The extracted rates exhibit a super-linear enhancement with the bias applied across the dot which is interpreted in terms of a dense spectrum of excited states contributing to the transport, characteristic for heavy hole systems. The full counting statistics of charge transfer events and the effect of back action is studied. The normal cumulants as well as the recently proposed factorial cumulants are calculated and discussed in view of their importance for interacting systems.

We demonstrate the modification of coherent zone-folded longitudinal acoustic phonons (ZFLAPs) oscillations in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells by the inclusion of metal nanoparticles (Au and Ag) via self-assembled inverted hexagonal pits. Blueshift and redshift have been observed in photoluminescence spectra due to the effect of electrostatic charge of metal nanoparticles (NPs). A change in periodicity of ZFLAPs oscillations were demonstrated due to the metal NPs inserted in the material system., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author

The coupling between a two-level system and its environment leads to decoherence. Within the context of coherent manipulation of electronic or quasiparticle states in nanostructures, it is crucial to understand the sources of decoherence. Here, we study the effect of electron-phonon coupling in a graphene and an InAs nanowire double quantum dot. Our measurements reveal oscillations of the double quantum dot current periodic in energy detuning between the two levels. These periodic peaks are more pronounced in the nanowire than in graphene, and disappear when the temperature is increased. We attribute the oscillations to an interference effect between two alternative inelastic decay paths involving acoustic phonons present in these materials. This interpretation predicts the oscillations to wash out when temperature is increased, as observed experimentally., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

In order to employ solid state quantum dots as qubits, both a high degree of control over the confinement potential as well as sensitive charge detection are essential. We demonstrate that by combining local anodic oxidation with local Schottky-gates, these criteria are nicely fulfilled in the resulting hybrid device. To this end, a quantum dot with adjacent charge detector is defined. After tuning the quantum dot to contain only a single electron, we are able to observe the charge detector signal of the quantum dot state for a wide range of tunnel couplings.

We study a graphene double quantum dot in different coupling regimes. Despite the strong capacitive coupling between the dots, the tunnel coupling is below the experimental resolution. We observe additional structures inside the finite-bias triangles, part of which can be attributed to electronic excited dot states, while others are probably due to modulations of the transmission of the tunnel barriers connecting the system to source and drain leads.

We use a scanning tunneling microscope operating in a low temperature, ultrahigh vacuum environment to study the atomic structure of single layer films of Cu2N grown on Cu(100). The c(2x2) lattice of Cu2N is incommensurate, with a lattice constant of 3.72 +/- 0.02 angstrom that is 3% larger than the bare Cu(100) surface. This finding suggests that strain due to lattice mismatch contributes to self assembly in this system. We find that the image contrast on Cu2N islands depends on bias voltage, which reconciles several interpretations in the literature. We assign features in these STM images to the Cu, N and hollow sites in the Cu2N lattice with the aid of co-adsorbed CO molecules. This atomic registry allows us to characterize four different defects on Cu2N, which influence the sticking coefficient and electronic coupling of adsorbates., Comment: submitted to PRB May 20, 2008

The neutral-current neutrino-nucleus scattering is calculated through the neutrino-induced knocked-out nucleon process in the quasielastic region by using a relativistic single particle model for the bound and continuum states. The incident energy range between 500 MeV and 1.0 GeV is used for the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering on ^{12}C target nucleus. The effects of the final state interaction of the knocked-out nucleon are studied not only on the cross section but also on the asymmetry due to the difference between neutrinos and antineutrinos, within a relativistic optical potential. A role of the axial vector mesons, such as $K_1$ and $a_1$, on the emitted photon spectrum in hot hadronic matter is studied through the channels $\pi \rho \to a_1 \to \pi \gamma$ and $K \rho \to K_1 \to K \gamma$. They are shown to be dominant channels in this spectrum. This study is carried out with an effective chiral lagrangian which includes vector and axial-vector mesons and explains well their relevant decays simultaneously., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

We study the nuclear stopping in high energy nuclear collisions using the constituent quark model. It is assumed that wounded nucleons with different number of interacted quarks hadronize in different ways. The probabilities of having such wounded nucleons are evaluated for proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. After examining our model in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions and fixing the hadronization functions, it is extended to nucleus-nucleus collisions. It is used to calculate the rapidity distribution and the rapidity shift of final state protons in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The computed results are in good agreement with the experimental data on $^{32}\mbox{S} +\ ^{32}\mbox{S}$ at $E_{lab} = 200$ AGeV and $^{208}\mbox{Pb} +\ ^{208}\mbox{Pb}$ at $E_{lab} = 160$ AGeV. Theoretical predictions are also given for proton rapidity distribution in $^{197}\mbox{Au} +\ ^{197}\mbox{Au}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ AGeV (BNL-RHIC). We predict that the nearly baryon free region will appear in the midrapidity region and the rapidity shift is $\langle \Delta y \rangle = 2.22$., Comment: 40 pages, 16 Postscript figures, submitted to Phys.
