3. Caf\'e Latte: Spontaneous layer formation in laterally cooled double diffusive convection

Abstract

In the preparation of Caf\'e Latte, spectacular layer formation can occur between the expresso shot in a glass of milk and the milk itself. Xue et al. (Nat. Commun., vol. 8, 2017, pp. 1-6) showed that the injection velocity of expresso determines the depth of coffee-milk mixture. After a while when a stable stratification forms in the mixture, the layering process can be modelled as a double diffusive convection system with a stably-stratified coffee-milk mixture cooled from the side. More specifically, we perform (two-dimensional) direct numerical simulations of laterally cooled double diffusive convection for a wide parameter range, where the convective flow is driven by a lateral temperature gradient while stabilized by a vertical concentration gradient. When the thermal driving force dominates over the stabilizing force, the flow behaves like vertical convection in which a large-scale circulation develops. However, with increasing strength of the stabilizing force, a meta-stable layered regime emerges. Initially, several vertically-stacked convection rolls develop, and these well-mixed layers are separated by sharp interfaces with large concentration gradients. The initial thickness of these emerging layers can be estimated by balancing the work exerted by thermal driving and the required potential energy to bring fluid out of its equilibrium position in the stably stratified fluid. In the layered regime, we further observe successive layer merging, and eventually only a single convection roll remains. We elucidate the following merging mechanism: As weakened circulation leads to accumulation of hot fluid adjacent to the hot sidewall, larger buoyancy forces associated with hotter fluid eventually break the layer interface. 16. Network Coded Transmission of Fountain Codes over Cooperative Relay Networks

Abstract

In this paper, a transmission strategy of fountain codes over cooperative relay networks is proposed. When more than one relay nodes are available, we apply network coding to fountain-coded packets. By doing this, partial information is made available to the destination node about the upcoming message block. It is therefore able to reduce the required number of transmissions over erasure channels, hence increasing the effective throughput. Its application to wireless channels with Rayleigh fading and AWGN noise is also analysed, whereby the role of analogue network coding and optimal weight selection is demonstrated.

22. Improvement of dielectric loss of doped Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films for tunable microwave devices

Abstract

Al2O3-Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (Al2O3-BST) thin films, with different Al2O3 contents, were deposited on (100) LaAlO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The Al2O3-BST films was demosnstrated to be a suitable systems to fabricate ferroelectric thin films with low dielectric loss and higher figure of merit for tunable microwave devices. Pure BST thin films were also fabricated for comparison purpose. The films' structure and morphology were analyzed by X-ray diffractiopn and scanning electron microscopy, respectively; nad showed that the surface roughness for the Al2O3-BST films increased with the Al2O3 content. Apart from that, the broadening in the intensity peak in XRD result indicating the grain size of the Al2O3-BST films reduced with the increasing of Al2O3 dopant. We measured the dielctric properties of Al2O3-BST films with a home-made non-destructive dual resonator method at frequency ~ 7.7 GHZ. The effect of doped Al2O3 into BST thin films significantly reduced the dielectric constant, dielectric loss and tunability compare to pure BST thin film. Our result shows the figure of merit (K), used to compare the films with varied dielectric properties, increased with the Al2O3 content. Therefore Al2O3-BST films show the potential to be exploited in tunable microwave devices., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. 23. Pulsed Laser Deposition of LaAlO3-Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 Thin Films for Tunable Device Applications

Abstract

LaAlO3-Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (LAO-BST) thin films, with different LAO contents, were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si and (100) LaAlO3 substrate, via a pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Phase composition and microstructure of the LAO-BST thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The LAO-BST thin films were solid solution of LAO nd BST, with lattice constant decreasing with increasing LAO content. The composition of (LAO)x(BST)1-x, estimated from the lattice constant of the thin films derived from the targets of 1/6, 2/6 and 3/6 LAO, was 0.143, 0.278, 0.476, respectively. The grain size of the thin films decreased as a result of the incorporation of LAO into BST. Dielectric properties of the LAO-BST thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si were measured at low frequency (100 kHz), while those on LaAlO3 substrate were characterized at high frequency (~7.9 GHz). The dielectric constants of the film derived from pure BST target and those from the targets with 1/6, 2/6 and 3/6 area ratio of LAO, on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate, were 772, 514, 395 and 282, with a dielectric loss of 0.096, 0.023, 0.024 and 0.025, and a dielectric tunability of 65%, 53%, 43% and 14%, respectively. The dielectric constant of the LAO-BST films on LaAlO3 substrate were 2436, 2148, 2018, 1805, with a maximum dielectric tunability of 11%, 13%, 10% and 8% at a maximum applied voltage of 2.4 kV (~9.2 kV/cm)., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Fractal behavior and long-range dependence have been observed in tele-traffic measurement and characterization. In this paper we show results of application of the fractal analysis to internet traffic via various methods. Our result demonstrate that the internet traffic exhibits self-similarity. Time-scale analysis show to be an effective way to characterize the local irregularity. 25. The characterisation of nanostructured magnetic materials using image spectroscopy and electron tomography

Abstract

In this dissertation, two advanced TEM techniques, image spectroscopy and electron tomography, are applied to the quantitative structural and chemical characterisation of nanostructured magnetic materials, in both two and three dimensions (3D), at nanometre spatial resolution. In image spectroscopy, chemical information is obtained by acquiring extended energy-selected series of images, which are interpreted using a combination of computer processing and traditional electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis. In tomography, 3D microstructural and chemical information is obtained by acquiring ultra-high tilt series of high-angle-annular dark field (HAADF) or energy-filtered TEM (EFTEM) images, and subsequently applying tomographic reconstruction and visualisation algorithms to the data. The techniques are applied to the characterisation of materials that include closely-spaced FeNi nanoparticles coated in oxide shells, lithographically patterned Ni pillars, platinum nanoparticles, chromium carbides in stainless steel, titanomagnetite and an ALH meteorite sample. Biological samples include magnetotactic crystals and bacteria cells, greigite-containing bacterial cells and amyloid plaque cores. The chemical data from image spectroscopy and morphological data from electron tomography are cross-correlated. Furthermore, experimental tomographic data are compared with tomographic reconstructions of image simulations.

30. Analysis on voltage stability on power grid connected to solar PV.

Abstract

Electricity is essential to human being and is a key factor in a country's economic growth. Researchers have been urged to concentrate on improving power supply, efficiency and reliability as a result of electricity issues. This pursuit has increased the desire to integrate renewable energy which in terms of solar photovoltaic (PV) into the power grid in order to address the issue of energy scarcity. However, the significant rise in solar power generations and decreasing the power production of synchronous generators in the grid also may present technological complications and major impacts on system stability. Voltage stability refers to the power system network's ability to sustain fixed tolerable voltage across all network buses under standard operating conditions as well as after a disruption. This research focuses on the impact of solar PV energy as a source of network disruption. This is due to the fact that this type of energy source has now advanced to a higher level of integration into the national grid. Furthermore, Voltage Stability Indices (VSI) were being introduced to indicates the voltage stability of the system. Under VSI there were several voltage stability indicators can be used to determine the weakest area and voltage stability of the system. To achieve the main research objectives, the network system is developed based on the test case of the IEEE 30-bus system by using Power System Simulator for Engineering software (PSSE). Voltage stability indicators such as the Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI) and Line Stability Factor (LQP) were proposed in this project. FVSI is used to identify the weakest area of the system, while LQP is used to analyse the voltage stability of the system. Last but not least the impact of solar PV on line loading percentage is also being observed. The reason for this is that if there is a higher output of solar PV integrated into the system, it may affect the system's line loading percentage. Abstract

This article reports on a case of a 39-year-old woman who was referred to a fetal cardiac program in Toronto, Canada, after a fetal cardiac mass was discovered during a second-trimester anatomy scan. The mass was identified as a cardiac tumor called rhabdomyoma, and further testing was done to determine if it was associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS). Treatment with sirolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, was initiated to relieve symptoms and prevent further deterioration. The tumor responded well to treatment, and the patient delivered a healthy baby. This case suggests that transplacental therapy with sirolimus can be effective for non-TS rhabdomyomas, and further research is needed to understand the molecular mechanisms involved. Abstract

INTRODUCTION A three-dose recombinant vaccine against hepatitis E, Hecolin, has been licensed for use in China since 2011. While not recommended for routine use due to lack of evidence on burden in the general population, in 2015 WHO recommended the vaccine be considered in outbreaks. As of early 2022 however, the vaccine had not been used in outbreak settings. A reduced-dose vaccination schedule, if effective, could make the vaccine an important outbreak response tool. In response to an increase in hepatitis E cases in a camp for internally displaced people in Bentiu, South Sudan in late 2021, MSF and South Sudan’s MoH implemented the first ever mass reactive vaccination campaign against hepatitis E virus (HEV). Three vaccination rounds took place in March, April, and October 2022, targeting 26,848 individuals aged 16-40 years, including pregnant women. We set up enhanced surveillance and conducted a case-control study to estimate two-dose vaccine effectiveness (VE). METHODS All suspected cases presenting to the MSF hospital who were eligible for vaccination and provided consent were enrolled in the study, comprising a questionnaire, laboratory examinations and a follow-up visit after 2-4 weeks. Vaccine-eligible suspect cases were matched to community controls. We estimated two dose VE against probable (anti-HEV IgM positive with elevated alanine transaminase, or a four-fold rise in IgG in paired samples) and confirmed (HEV RNA positive) hepatitis E using conditional logistic regression models. ETHICS This study was approved by the MSF and South Sudan Ethics Review Boards. RESULTS Considering the period two weeks after the second vaccination round between 11 May and 30 December 2022, 287 vaccine-eligible suspect hepatitis E cases were enrolled, including one probable and 16 confirmed cases. Among probable and confirmed cases, two (11.8%) were vaccinated with two or more doses compared to 40 (40%) of their 100 matched controls. We estimated a VE of 86.5% (95% confidence interval, CI, 36.3–97.1) for one/two doses and 83.9% (95% CI, -33.1–98.1%) for two doses. In addition to this direct protection, we observed a 5.5-fold decrease in the incidence rate of probable/confirmed cases hepatitis E cases before and after the second dose campaign (including those not eligible for vaccination). Laboratory confirmation of hepatitis E infection is ongoing, and we expect to revise VE estimates and incidence based on these results. CONCLUSION Following the first mass reactive vaccination campaign against hepatitis E, incidence has declined. Preliminary VE estimates suggest that the short-term protection provided by this reduced dose regimen may be high and potentially sufficient for outbreak response.
