The optimization operation of reservoir seasonal Flood-Limited Water Levels (FLWLs) can counterbalance the hydropower generation and flood prevention in the flood season. This study proposes a multi-objective optimization operation model to optimize the reservoir seasonal FLWLs for enhancing synergies of hydropower generation and flood prevention. The integration of the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II and a simulation-optimization framework is applied for optimizing the joint operation of reservoirs meanwhile achieving the Pareto solutions to reduce computation complexity and time. And then, the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution is utilized to identify the best seasonal FLWL scheme grounded on multi-criteria decision-making analysis. The mixed reservoirs located in the upstream Yangtze River of China constitute the case study. The results showed that: compared with the annual FLWL scheme, the proposed seasonal FLWL schemes without increasing flood prevention risk could facilitate the joint operation of the mixed reservoirs to achieve 868 million kW·h (5.1% improvement) in average hydroelectricity production during the flood season, meanwhile reducing 681 million kg in carbon emissions accordingly. The results support that the proposed methods can boost hydropower production to benefit China's national tactics in accomplishing peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030. Study Region: Four subbasins in the Gandaki River Basin in the southern Himalayan region. Study Focus: In the southern Himalayan region, gridded precipitation datasets are often used to complement sparse gauge network observations in hydrological modelling for water resource assessment. However, the applicability and uncertainty of using these datasets in hydrological modelling remain to be evaluated. In this study, nine high spatial resolution gridded precipitation datasets were used to force a widely used hydrological model to simulate the daily runoff at four hydrological stations in this region. The accuracy of these datasets was evaluated, and the model calibration results and modelling uncertainty were analyzed. New Hydrological Insights for the Region: Our analysis revealed large differences among the nine gridded precipitation datasets, and most datasets underestimated the annual precipitation in the low-elevation regions and overestimated that in the high Himalayas. Furthermore, through the adjustments of model parameters, the underestimations of precipitation by gridded datasets were compensated for by the overestimation of glacial melt. Therefore, the model performance was better, and the model uncertainty was lower in basins with higher glacial coverage. Notably, our findings indicated that the performances of gridded precipitation datasets were heterogeneous and that their direct use in hydrological modelling may result in unreasonable hydrological process variables; thus, these datasets should be evaluated and used with caution in water resource assessments in Himalayan regions.

Abstract Intensifying droughts under climatic warming are of widespread concern owing to their devastating impacts on water resources, societies and ecosystems. However, the effects of exogeneous drivers on regional droughts remain poorly understood. Using the Lagrangian method, atmospheric reanalysis data and climate projections from the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6), we show how exogenous precipitation minus evaporation (PME) deficit drives droughts across China. More specifically, we demonstrate that four distinct trajectories of such exogenous PME deficit fuel regional droughts. Three of these trajectories relate to oceanic PME deficit originating from the North Atlantic, eastern Bering Sea and Indian Ocean, and one trajectory characterizes exogenous terrestrial PME deficit from the Siberian Plateau. We show that during 1980–2020, droughts induced by exogenous PME deficit account for 45% of all droughts that occurred in China’s coastal region, and for 7% of all droughts in the northwestern regions. Under climate scenario SSP245 (SSP585), limiting warming to 1.5 °C compared to 2 °C above pre-industrial levels could avoid 60% (84%) of exogenous drought exposure. This would in turn reduce population exposure by 40% (49%), and economic exposure by 73% (66%). Our study unravels how exogenous PME deficit drives droughts in China, underscoring the role that external drivers have on regional droughts and associated future prediction.

Study region: Catchment area above the Huaxian station along the Wei River Basin, China. Study focus: This study attempts to construct a new Non-stationary Standardized Streamflow Index (NSSI) applicable to the variable streamflow sequence of the Wei River Basin based on the climate index and the optimal anthropogenic index, and analyse the drought characteristics of the basin. The climate index is used to quantify climate change factors and three anthropogenic indices are used to quantify the factor of human activities, including the reservoir index, the human-induced index calculated based on the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrological model and the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model machine learning approach, respectively. New hydrological insights for the region: The human-induced index based on the LSTM model is more suitable for quantifying anthropogenic factors in the Wei River Basin. The NSSI performs better than the SSI in drought identification. The NSSI based on the LSTM model can capture more frequent severe drought and extreme drought events. The frequency of severe drought and extreme drought is higher in summer and autumn than in the others. The NSSI can better characterize the hydrological drought processes under a non-stationary condition, thus it can provide a more effective reference for regional drought assessment and related policy-making from the perspective of a changing environment.

Study region: The Poyang Lake, which is located on the south bank of the middle-lower Yangtze River basin. The lake is the largest freshwater lake in China, and also a typical floodplain lake in the world. Study focus: The spatiotemporal heterogeneity of inundation dynamics of large floodplain lake system has not been paid enough attention. Based on the reconstructed high spatial and temporal resolution inundation dataset using the image fusion model and multi-source remote sensing data, this study systematically analyzed the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of inundation dynamics in the Poyang Lake- floodplain system. New hydrological insights for the region: It is found that within the same floodplain lake, the inundated area and inundation frequency in different regions of the lake (the main lake region and the adjacent floodplain region) can have asynchronous intra-annual fluctuation and opposite inter-annual change trend. This is highly related to the hydrological complexity of the lake: the relative impacts of catchment inflow and the Yangtze River varies in different regions across the lake. The stage-area relationship at the central station along the flow direction of the lake has the highest linear correlation, which might provide more accurate estimates of lake surface/volume. In addition, this study highlights the importance of reconstructed high spatial-temporal resolution of remote sensing data for the accurate assessment of inundation dynamics in floodplain lakes. All the results enrich the understanding of complex hydrological regime of large floodplain lakes and are valuable for the practice of water resources management and ecological conservation in such lakes.

This paper presents an updated review of model-dependent regionalization methods in hydrology since the PUB decade, incorporating new regions and methodological advancements. Two categories of regionalization methods are discussed: distance-based and regression-based, with various modification approaches. Several factors affecting the accuracy of regionalization performance are identified, including hydrological models, climate characteristics, data availability, and regionalization techniques. The review concludes that distance-based regionalization methods with an output averaging option from multiple donor catchments are the most statistically reliable, and a threshold of 0.5–0.8 for donor selection is optimal for performance. The parsimonious hydrological model is also recommended, particularly in data-limited contexts. Other insights include the effectiveness of the ensemble concept and limited impact of prior classification. Additionally, it is found that the general performance difference between climatic classes is larger than between methods, and regression-based methods may have large uncertainties in tropical regions. Overall, this study provides practical guidance for improving regionalization studies and advancing the field of hydrology. Rainfall characteristics are changing due to several reasons and change/trend detection is required. Literature survey reveals many relevant studies whose outcomes are divergent, possibly because different data series and different methodologies have been applied. This paper presents a critical appraisal of past studies and methodologies for trend analysis. Results of trend analysis of Indian rainfall data are presented. Data for all of India and for five homogenous regions (North-West, Central North-East, North-East, West Central, and Peninsular India) for 1871–2016 were used. The Pettitt change point test, regression, Mann-Kendall (MK), and Wavelet Decomposition were used to study different aspects of changes. Results of the change point test showed that most rainfall series had change points around 1957–65, possibly due to large-scale land use, cultivation, irrigation, and industrial changes in this period. Generally, rainfall for most homogenous regions and sub-divisions show falling trends; some are statistically significant. Series was also decomposed by the wavelet method. Approximate and detailed components of some decomposed series showed a significant declining trend. This work has focused on the magnitude of rainfalls; trends in rainfall intensities are also important. It is necessary to establish denser observation networks to collect short-term data and analyze. HIGHLIGHTS Detection of trends in data series helps in projections.; We present the results of trend analysis using long-term quality-controlled rainfall data.; Data series at country and regional levels at annual and monsoon scales were studied.; We found that most rainfall data have change points around 1957–1965; some are statistically significant.; Multi-resolution analysis highlighted periods of high variabilities in the data.;

Abstract Fast and accurate prediction of urban flood is of considerable practical importance to mitigate the effects of frequent flood disasters in advance. To improve urban flood prediction efficiency and accuracy, we proposed a framework for fast mapping of urban flood: a coupled model based on physical mechanisms was first constructed, a rainfall-inundation database was generated, and a hybrid flood mapping model was finally proposed using the multi-objective random forest (MORF) method. The results show that the coupled model had good reliability in modelling urban flood, and 48 rainfall-inundation scenarios were then specified. The proposed hybrid MORF model in the framework also demonstrated good performance in predicting inundated depth under the observed and scenario rainfall events. The spatial inundated depths predicted by the MORF model were close to those of the coupled model, with differences typically less than 0.1 m and an average correlation coefficient reaching 0.951. The MORF model, however, achieved a computational speed of 200 times faster than the coupled model. The overall prediction performance of the MORF model was also better than that of the k-nearest neighbor model. Our research provides a novel approach to rapid urban flood mapping and flood early warning.

Climate change and anthropogenic interventions have obviously altered the eco-hydrological regimes. A quantitative evaluation and attribution of the eco-hydrological alterations are urgently required. In this study, we evaluated the various attributions of eco-hydrological regimes in the Weihe River Basin (WRB). Firstly, the trends and change-point analysis of hydrological elements were examined, and the natural streamflow was reproduced based on the variable infiltration capacity model. Then, the most ecologically relevant hydrological indicators (ERHIs) were selected and combined with the eco-deficit and eco-surplus indicators to assess the degree of eco-hydrological regime alterations. Finally, the relative contributions to eco-hydrological alterations were quantified using the ‘simulated–observed comparison’ method. The results showed that (1) the streamflow of the WRB exhibited significant decreasing trends (p < 0.01), and a significant change point (p < 0.01) of the streamflow series was identified in 1990. (2) Seven representative indicators of hydrological alteration were selected as ERHIs. (3) During the human-induced period (1991–2017), human activities were the dominant factors in the eco-hydrological alterations as well as the variations of the ERHI indexes and the eco-deficit and eco-surplus metrics. Overall, the proposed framework may improve the understanding of the driving forces of eco-hydrological regime alterations under a changing environment. The direct and seasonally-lagged effects of compound weather and climate events in spring on vegetation productivity vary with latitude and can amplify the effects of individual weather events, according to observationally-constrained estimates and process-based terrestrial ecosystem models.

Total water storage in Eurasia can be driven by both climate variability and human activities, with the latter suggested as the key factor for water loss. However, here the authors show that drying in the low-latitude Atlantic Ocean is the dominant force in storage depeletion during 2003-2017.

Parameter regionalization of hydrological models is one of the most commonly used methods for hydrological prediction over ungauged catchments. Although there were many regional studies, there is no clear conclusion on the best-performing regionalization method for global hydrological modelling. The objective of this study is to determine an appropriate global-scale regionalization scheme (GSRS) for global hydrological modelling. To this end, the performance of five regionalization methods with two different average options, two weighting approaches, and seven efficiency thresholds (i.e. Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE) values to measure hydrological model performances) was compared over thousands of catchments based on four conceptual hydrological models. Results of nine global models from the Global Earth Observation for Integrated Water Resource Assessment (EartH2Observe) project were selected to validate the accuracy of GSRS in estimating global runoff. The results show that: (1) Spatial proximity method with the Inverse Distance Weighting method and the output average option offers the best regionalization result when using the KGE ≥ 0.5 as an efficiency threshold for all four hydrological models, (2) the regionalization-based global hydrological simulation schemes (RGHSs), i.e. the proposed GSRS combining with four hydrological models, consistently performs better than the nine global models from EartH2Observe project in the estimation of runoff for most catchments, with varying degrees of improvement in the median, upper and lower quartiles, and whiskers of each performance metric, and (3) the global long-term annual water resources estimated by RGHSs range between 42,592 and 46,810 km3/yr. HIGHLIGHTS The performance of regionalization methods is evaluated with multiple hydrological models globally.; A global-scale regionalization scheme (GSRS) is proposed for global hydrological modelling.; The robust regionalization-based global hydrological simulation schemes (RGHSs), i.e. the proposed GSRS combining with four hydrological models, can produce reliable simulations of global water resources.;

Quantifying the uncertainty of non-stationary flood frequency analysis is very crucial and beneficial for planning and design of water engineering projects, which is fundamentally challenging especially in the presence of high climate variability and reservoir regulation. This study proposed an integrated approach that combined the Generalized Additive Model for Location, Scale and Shape parameters (GAMLSS) method, the Copula function and the Bayesian Uncertainty Processor (BUP) technique to make reliable probabilistic interval estimations of design floods. The reliability and applicability of the proposed approach were assessed by flood datasets collected from two hydrological monitoring stations located in the Hanjiang River of China. The precipitation and the reservoir index were selected as the explanatory variables for modeling the time-varying parameters of marginal and joint distributions using long-term (1954–2018) observed datasets. First, the GAMLSS method was employed to model and fit the time-varying characteristics of parameters in marginal and joint distributions. Second, the Copula function was employed to execute the point estimations of non-stationary design floods. Finally, the BUP technique was employed to perform the interval estimations of design floods based on the point estimations obtained from the Copula function. The results demonstrated that the proposed approach can provide reliable probabilistic interval estimations of design floods meanwhile reducing the uncertainty of non-stationary flood frequency analysis. Consequently, the integrated approach is a promising way to offer an indication on how design values can be estimated in a high-dimensional problem. Cities are highly complex, inter-connected social-ecological systems, encompassing social, built and natural/semi-natural components. They interact with their surrounding extra-urban areas at varying scales, from peri-urban and rural to global. Space is a valuable commodity in cities. However, in most instances, city planners tend to think about interventions only within cities and rarely about the wider connected domains outside. Yet, considering the wider spatial context, including space outside of the city boundaries, may open up opportunities to achieve substantially greater benefit for city residents without sacrificing valuable space, leading to more sustainable city design for people and the environment.In this paper we discuss the intra-extra-urban flows which connect cities to their wider airsheds, watersheds, biosheds and resourcesheds, which in turn interact with their peoplesheds. For each domain, we illustrate the processes and the scales they operate at, and discuss the implications for optimum location of nature-based solutions (NBS) to address urban challenges. We suggest that integrating knowledge about these multiple sheds can inform holistic design of NBS to deliver greater benefit for city residents. This takes into account the synergies and multi-functional co-benefits which arise from a careful consideration of place and people, while minimising potential disbenefits and trade-offs.

In traditional flood frequency analysis, a minimum of 30 observations is required to guarantee the accuracy of design results with an allowable uncertainty, however, there has not been a recommendation for the requirement on the length of data in NFFA (nonstationary flood frequency analysis). Therefore, this study has been carried out with three aims: (i) to evaluate the predictive capabilities of nonstationary (NS) and stationary (ST) models with varying flood record lengths; (ii) to examine the impacts of flood record lengths on the NS and ST design floods and associated uncertainties; and (iii) to recommend the probable requirements of flood record length in NFFA. To achieve these objectives, 20 stations with record length longer than 100 years in Norway were selected and investigated by using both GEV (generalized extreme value)-ST and GEV-NS models with linearly varying location parameter (denoted by GEV-NS0). The results indicate that the fitting quality and predictive capabilities of GEV-NS0 outperform those of GEV-ST models when record length is approximately larger than 60 years for most stations, and the stability of the GEV-ST and GEV-NS0 is improved as record lengths increase. Therefore, a minimum of 60 years of flood observations is recommended for NFFA for the selected basins in Norway. Understanding the evolution of river morphology is crucial for comprehending changes in water resources and implementing development projects along rivers. This study proposes an integrated approach utilizing remote sensing image data combined with deep learning and visual interpretation algorithms to analyze continuous-type changes in river morphology. This research focuses on the lower reaches of the Minjiang River in China and comprehensively analyzes the river’s morphological evolution from 1986 to 2021. The results show that the proposed method of river water identification in this study demonstrates high accuracy and effectiveness, with an F1 score and Kappa coefficient greater than 0.96 and 0.91, respectively. The morphology of the river channel remains stable in the upstream and estuarine sections of the study region while undergoing substantial alterations in the middle section. Additionally, this study also identifies several factors that significantly impact the evolution of river morphology, including reservoir construction, river sediment mining, river training measures, geological conditions, and large flood events. The findings of this study can provide some insights into the management and conservation of water resources.

Whether or not large-scale vegetation restoration will lead to a decrease in regional terrestrial water storage is a controversial topic. This study employed the Geodetector model, in conjunction with observed and satellite hydro-meteorological data, to detect the changes in terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) and to identify the contributions of climate change and vegetation greening across China during the years 1982–2019. The results revealed that: (1) during the period of 1982–2019, TWSA showed a downward trend in about two thirds of the country, with significant declines in North China, southeast Tibet, and northwest Xinjiang, and an upward trend in the remaining third of the country, with significant increases mainly in the Qaidam Basin, the Yangtze River, and the Songhua River; (2) the positive correlation between normalized vegetation index (NDVI) and TWSA accounts for 48.64% of the total vegetation area across China. In addition, the response of vegetation greenness lags behind the TWSA and precipitation, and the lag time was shorter in arid and semi-arid regions dominated by grasslands, and longer in relatively humid regions dominated by forests and savannas; (3) furthermore, TWSAs decreased with the increase in NDVI and evapotranspiration (ET) in arid and semi-arid areas, and increased with the rise in NDVI and ET in the humid regions. The Geodetector model was used to detect the effects of climate, vegetation, and human factors on TWSA. It is worth mentioning that NDVI, precipitation, and ET were some of the main factors affecting TWSA. Therefore, it is essential to implement rational ecological engineering to mitigate climate change’s negative effects and maintain water resources’ sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions.

To improve the accuracy and reliability of precipitation estimation, numerous models based on machine learning technology have been developed for integrating data from multiple sources. However, little attention has been paid to extracting the spatiotemporal correlation patterns between satellite products and rain gauge observations during the merging process. This paper focuses on this issue by proposing an integrated framework to generate an accurate and reliable spatiotemporal estimation of precipitation. The proposed framework integrates Funk-Singular Value Decomposition (F-SVD) in the recommender system to achieve the accurate spatial distribution of precipitation based on the spatiotemporal interpolation of rain gauge observations and Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM) to merge precipitation data from interpolation results and satellite observation through exploiting the spatiotemporal correlation pattern between them. The framework (FS-ConvLSTM) is utilized to obtain hourly precipitation merging data with a resolution of 0.1° in Jianxi Basin, southeast of China, from both rain gauge data and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) from 2006 to 2018. The LSTM and Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) are constructed for comparison purposes. The results demonstrate that the framework could not only provide more accurate precipitation distribution but also achieve better stability and reliability. Compared with other models, it performs better in variation process description and rainfall capture capability, and the root mean square error (RSME) and probability of detection (POD) are improved by 63.6% and 22.9% from the original GPM, respectively. In addition, the merged precipitation combines the strength of different data while mitigating their weaknesses and has good agreement with observed precipitation in terms of magnitude and spatial distribution. Consequently, the proposed framework provides a valuable tool to improve the accuracy of precipitation estimation, which can have important implications for water resource management and natural disaster preparedness.

Application potential and development prospect of satellite precipitation products such as Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) have promising implications. This study discusses causes of spatiotemporal differences on GPM data through the following steps: Initially, calculate bias between satellite-based data and rain gauge data of Xiangjiang river catchment to assess the accuracy of GPM (06E, 06 L, and 06F) products. Second, total errors of satellite precipitation data are divided into hit bias (HBIAS: precipitation detected by both GPM and rain gauge station), missed precipitation (MBIAS: precipitation detected only by rain gauge station), and false precipitation (FBIAS: precipitation detected only by GPM). Third, evaluate the impact of precipitation intensity and total precipitation on accuracy of GPM data and their influence on three error components. Several conclusions are drawn from the results above. (1) Satellite-based precipitation measurements perform better on a larger temporal-spatial scale. (2) The accuracy of TRMM and GPM data displays significant variances on space and time. Season, precipitation intensity, and total precipitation are main factors influencing the accuracy of TRMM and GPM data. (3) The detection capability of satellite products change with seasonal variation and different precipitation intensity level. HIGHLIGHTS GPM products have wider spatial coverage, higher temporal and spatial resolution than TRMM products.; GPM products are more in line with the data requirements of hydrological simulation and forecast.; Evaluate accuracy of different GPM products in precipitation measuring, including early, late and final products.; Assess the improvement of GPM products comparing with its predecessor, TRMM.;

Although various studies have investigated the impacts of climate variability and human activities on drought, researches specifically analysing the impact on ecological drought are still limited. A deep understanding of the climatic and anthropogenic effects on ecological drought processes is crucial for ecological regulation and management in the changing environments. In the present study, an integrated approach for comprehensive understanding and quantification of ecological drought in rivers was proposed which first applied the nonparametric kernel density estimation (KDE) method to calculate the most suitable ecological streamflow (MSES) for a river ecosystem. Then, the variable threshold level method based on the MSES for each month and the run theory method were applied to identify the ecological drought duration and deficit volumes. Finally, a quantification approach based on hydrological model simulation was proposed to attribute the impacts of climate variability and human activities on ecological drought. The proposed approach was applied on two catchments, Xianyang (XY) and Huaxian (HX) within the Weihe River Basin (WRB) in northern China. Comparison results obtained using the two empirical methods revealed that the MSES calculated using the KDE method was reasonable and can be used for ecological drought identification. The identification results showed that both the median and upper quartile values of the drought duration and deficit volumes during the disturbed period (1991–2017) were greater than those during the undisturbed period (1961–1990). Quantification results showed that human activities were the dominant factor aggravating ecological drought in the WRB after 1990. The contribution rates of climate variability and human activities toward ecological drought variations were 25.6% and 74.4%, respectively, for the XY station and 42.7% and 57.3%, respectively, for the HX station. Although the WRB was selected as a case study, the proposed approach can also be applied to other regions to provide scientific guidance for regional ecological management.

The ecological conservation and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin (YRB) has been adopted as a major national strategy of China. However, the YRB is still afflicted by floods. Here, we proposed a flood risk indicator using direct economic loss degree and improved the SNRD (station-based nonlinear regression downscaling model) and simulated extreme precipitation processes. The correlation coefficient of downscaled average extreme precipitation of CMORPH and CMIP6 data reached 0.817. Moreover, we evaluated flood risk and flood hazard across the YRB based on the sixth phase Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) data under different SSPs. Under SSP126, SSP245, and SSP585 scenarios, the areas with increasing flood hazards during 2015–2045 accounted for 65.2, 69.0, and 64.5% of the entire YRB. In the spatial pattern, flood hazards decreased from southeastern to northwestern parts of the YRB. When compared with the spatial pattern of flood risks in 2015, regions with high flood risks expanded slightly and regions with low flood risks shrunk slightly. Higher flood risks can be observed in the middle and lower YRB and particularly in the lower YRB. These findings are critical for the mitigation of flood risk across the YRB under warming climate.

Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plantations have high water consumption through evapotranspiration, which can contribute to water scarcity. In addition, there is a lack of spatial observation data and estimation methods for evapotranspiration (ET) for rubber plantations. To alleviate the water stress of expanding rubber plantations caused by seasonal drought in Xishuangbanna, Southwest China, an up to 7 days crop evapotranspiration (ETc) forecast method, “Kc-ET0” for rubber plantations with limited meteorological data, was proposed by using rubber crop coefficient Kc and public weather forecasts. The results showed that the average absolute error (MAE) of forecasted ETc was 0.68 mm d−1, the root mean square error (RMSE) was 0.85 mm d−1, and the average correlation coefficient (R) was 0.69 during the rainy season, while during the dry season these metrics were 0.52 mm d−1, 0.68 mm d−1, and 0.85, respectively. The accuracy of ETc forecast in the dry season was higher. Additionally, Kc was the main factor influencing the accuracy of rubber plantations ETc forecast, while the accuracy of the temperature forecast and the chosen Hargreaves-Samani (HS) model were also considerable. Our results suggested that the “Kc-ET0” short-term rubber plantation ETc forecasting method shows good performance and acceptable accuracy, especially in the dry season. The study provides an important basis for creating ET-based irrigation scheduling for improving regional-scale water management in high water consumption rubber plantations.

Abstract Detection and attribution of precipitation variability are fundamentally challenging, especially in the presence of complex nonlinear relationships between precipitation variability and large‐scale teleconnections. The aim of this study is twofold. First, we identify abrupt changes and the trend and periodicity characteristics of long‐term (1950–2019) annual precipitation series over the Norway mainland by using the Multiple Comparison Procedures, the Mann‐Kendall test, and the Wavelet Analysis. Second, we interpret the variability characteristics found over five regions of Norway by exploring their relationships with teleconnections through the Maximal Information Coefficient. The results indicate that significant abrupt changes appeared in the mean (variance) value of annual precipitation series at 117 (49) out of 159 rainfall stations of five regions in Norway at a significance level of 0.05. The occurrences of change points varied from 1979 to 1984 in five regions of Norway. The mean and variance of the annual precipitation series increased by 32% and 16% at most, respectively, compared with those values before the change points. The first periodicity (spanning four to five decades) was the dominant periodic component and could be used to best characterize the Norwegian precipitation variability. Because the subtropical Azores High (subpolar Icelandic Low) moves toward (away from) Europe, the relationship between the annual precipitation series and the Scandinavian pattern (Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation) series tended to be of an upward (downward) hook structure. The association of precipitation variability and teleconnections found in this study can pave the way for new possibilities with regard to detection and attribution of precipitation variability.

The fundamental assumption of flood frequency analysis is that flood samples are generated by the same flood generation mechanism (FGM). However, flood events are usually triggered by the interaction of meteorological factors and watershed properties, which results in different FMGs. To solve this problem, researchers have put forward traditional two-component mixture distributions (TCMD-T) without clearly linking each component distribution to an explicit FGM. In order to improve the physical meaning of mixture distributions in seasonal snow-covered areas, the ratio of rainfall to flood volume (referred to as rainfall–flood ratio, RF) method was used to classify distinct FGMs. Thus, the weighting coefficient of each component distribution was determined in advance in the rainfall–flood ratio based TCMD (TCMD-RF). TCMD-RF model was applied to 34 basins in Norway. The results showed that flood types can be clearly divided into rain-on-snow-induced flood, snowmelt-induced flood and rainfall-induced flood. Moreover, the design flood and associated uncertainties were also estimated. It is found that TCMD-RF model can reduce the uncertainties of design flood by 20% compared with TCMD-T. The superiority of TCMD-RF is attributed to its clear classification of FGMs, thus determining the weighting coefficients without optimization and simplifying the parameter estimation procedure of mixture distributions.

Large-scale hydrological models are important tools for simulating the hydrological effect of climate change. As an indispensable part of the application of distributed hydrological models, large-scale flow routing methods can simulate not only the discharge at the outlet but also the temporal and spatial distribution of flow. The aggregated network-response function (NRF), as a scale-independent routing method, has been tested in many basins and demonstrated to have good runoff simulation performance. However, it had a poor performance and produced an unreasonable travel time when it was applied to certain basins due to a lack of consideration of the influence of the underlying surface. In this study, we improve the NRF routing method by combining it with a velocity function using a new routing parameter b to reflect the wave velocity's sensitivity to slope. The proposed method was tested in 15 catchments at the Yangtze River basin. The results show that it can provide better daily runoff simulation performance than the original routing model and the calibrated travel times in all catchments are more reasonable. Therefore, our proposed routing method is effective and has great potential to be applied to other basins. Bias correction methods are based on the assumption of bias stationarity of climate model outputs. However, this assumption may not be valid, because of the natural climate variability. This study investigates the impacts of bias nonstationarity of climate models simulated precipitation and temperature on hydrological climate change impact studies. The bias nonstationarity is determined as the range of difference in bias over multiple historical periods with no anthropogenic climate change for four different time windows. The role of bias nonstationarity in future climate change is assessed using the signal-to-noise ratio as a criterion. The results show that biases of climate models simulated monthly and annual precipitation and temperature vary with time, especially for short time windows. The bias nonstationarity of precipitation plays a great role in future precipitation change, while the role of temperature bias is not important. The bias nonstationarity of climate model outputs is amplified when driving a hydrological model for hydrological simulations. The increase in the length of time window can mitigate the impacts of bias nonstationarity for streamflow projections. Thus, a long time period is suggested to be used to calibrate a bias correction method for hydrological climate change impact studies to reduce the influence of natural climate variability. HIGHLIGHTS The biases of GCM precipitation and temperature vary with time, due to natural climate variability.; The bias nonstationarity of precipitation plays a great role in future precipitation change, while the role of temperature bias is not important.; The bias nonstationarity of precipitation and temperature has great considerable impacts on future streamflow changes.;

The Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) and TCN combined with the Encoder-Decoder architecture (TCN-ED) are proposed to forecast runoff in this study. Both models are trained and tested using the hourly data in the Jianxi basin, China. The results indicate that the forecast horizon has a great impact on the forecast ability, and the concentration time of the basin is a critical threshold to the effective forecast horizon for both models. Both models perform poorly in the low flow and well in the medium and high flow at most forecast horizons, while it is subject to the forecast horizon in forecasting peak flow. TCN-ED has better performance than TCN in runoff forecasting, with higher accuracy, better stability, and insensitivity to fluctuations in the rainfall process. Therefore, TCN-ED is an effective deep learning solution in runoff forecasting within an appropriate forecast horizon. HIGHLIGHTS For the first time, TCN and TCN-ED models are proposed to forecast runoff.; TCN-ED has better performance than TCN in runoff forecast in this study.; The concentration time is a critical threshold to the effective forecast horizon.; Both models perform better in median and high flow than in low flow.; It is subject to the forecast horizon for both models to forecast peak flow.;

At present, climate change has brought huge challenges to vegetation and ecosystems. As the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is a sensitive area of global climate change, the dynamic assessment of its ecological vulnerability is very important. In order to better quantify the relative size of the ecological vulnerability of the QTP, this study starts from the background characteristics and dynamic change process of the ecosystem, by fitting the vegetation index net primary productivity (NPP) and the temperature, precipitation and meteorological elements. The coefficients of autocorrelation multiple linear regression are used to construct an ecological vulnerability model from the three dimensions of “exposure-sensitivity-elasticity” to conduct a dynamic assessment of ecological vulnerability. Based on the evaluation results, from 2000 to 2015, the ecologically fragile areas were mainly distributed in the eastern and central areas of the QTP. The ecological fragility of the western region showed obvious discontinuities, with high and low vulnerabilities staggered. The three ecosystems of forest, grassland, and bare land have significant differences in their ecological vulnerability to climate change, showing a clear positive correlation in the three dimensions of exposure, sensitivity, and resilience, but in terms of the contribution rates of the three dimensions. The performance is relatively similar, and the relative relationship between the three dimensions is relatively balanced. The longitude and precipitation of the sample points have a greater impact on ecological vulnerability and its three dimensions, and the impact of precipitation on ecological vulnerability is more significant than that of temperature. This research provides theoretical support for plateau ecological conservation and ecological security under the influence of global climate.

Both flood magnitude and frequency might change under the changing environment. In this study, a procedure combining statistical methods, flood frequency analysis and attribution analysis was proposed to investigate the response of floods to urbanization and precipitation change in the Qinhuai River Basin, an urbanized basin located in Southeast China, over the period from 1986 to 2013. The Mann–Kendall test was employed to detect the gradual trend of the annual maximum streamflow and the peaks over threshold series. The frequency analysis was applied to estimate the changes in the magnitude and frequency of floods between the baseline period (1986–2001) and urbanization period (2002–2013). An attribution analysis was proposed to separate the effects of precipitation change and urbanization on flood sizes between the two periods. Results showed that: (1) there are significant increasing trends in medium and small flood series according to the Mann–Kendall test; (2) the mean and threshold values of flood series in the urbanization period were larger than those in the baseline period, while the standard deviation, coefficient of variation and coefficient of skewness of flood series were both higher during the baseline period than those during the urbanization period; (3) the flood magnitude was higher during the urbanization period than that during the baseline period at the same return period. The relative changes in magnitude were larger for small floods than for big floods from the baseline period to the urbanization period; (4) the contributions of urbanization on floods appeared to amplify with the decreasing return period, while the effects of precipitation diminish. The procedure presented in this study could be useful to detect the changes of floods in the changing environment and conduct the attribution analysis of flood series. The findings of this study are beneficial to further understanding interactions between flood behavior and the drivers, thereby improving flood management in urbanized basins.

Located in the Tibetan Plateau, the upstream regions of the Mekong River (UM) and the Salween River (US) are very sensitive to climate change. The ‘VIC-glacier‘ model, which links a degree-day glacier algorithm with variable infiltration capacity (VIC) model, was employed and the model parameters were calibrated on observed streamflow, glacier mass balance and MODIS snowcover data. Results indicate that: (1) glacier-melt runoff exhibits a significant increase in both areas by the Mann–Kendall test. Snowmelt runoff shows an increasing trend in the UM, while the US is characterized by a decreasing tendency. In the UM, the snowmelt runoff peak shifts from June in the baseline period 1964–1990 to May for both the 1990s and 2000s; (2) rainfall runoff was considered as the first dominant factor driving changes of river discharge, which could be responsible for over 84% in total runoff trend over the two regions. The glacial runoff illustrates the secondary influence on the total runoff tendency; (3) although the hydrological regime is rain dominated in these two basins, the glacier compensation effect in these regions is obvious, especially in dry years.

Discharge over the Narayani river catchment of Nepal was simulated using Statkraft's Hydrologic Forecasting Toolbox (Shyft) forced with observations and three global forcing datasets: (i) ERA-Interim (ERA-I), (ii) Water and Global Change (WATCH) Forcing Data ERA-I (WFDEI), and (iii) Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment with the contributing institute Rossy Centre, Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (CORDEX-SMHI). Not only does this provide an opportunity to evaluate discharge variability and uncertainty resulting from different forcing data but also it demonstrates the capability and potential of using these global datasets in data-sparse regions. The fidelity of discharge simulation is the greatest when using observations combined with the WFDEI forcing dataset (hybrid datasets). These results demonstrate the successful application of global forcing datasets for regional catchment-scale modeling in remote regions. The results were also promising to provide insight of the interannual variability in discharge. This study showed that while large biases in precipitation can be reduced by applying a precipitation correction factor (p_corr_factor), the best result is obtained using bias-corrected forcing data as input, i.e. the WFDEI outperformed other forcing datasets. Accordingly, the WFDEI forcing dataset holds great potential for improving our understanding of the hydrology of data-sparse Himalayan regions and providing the potential for prediction. The use of CORDEX-SMHI- and ERA-I-derived data requires further validation and bias correction, particularly over the high mountain regions.

There has been a surge of interest in the field of urban flooding in recent years. However, current stormwater management models are often too complex to apply on a large scale. To fill this gap, we use a physically based and spatially distributed overland flow model, SIMulated Water Erosion (SIMWE). The SIMWE model requires only rainfall intensity, terrain, infiltration, and surface roughness as input. The SIMWE model has great potential for application in real-time flood forecasting. In this study, we use the SIMWE model at two resolutions (20 m and 500 m) for Oslo, and at a high resolution (1 m) at the Grefsen area, which is approximately 1.5 km2 in Oslo. The results show that the SIMWE model can generate water depth maps at both coarse and high resolutions. The spatial resolution has strong impacts on the absolute values of water depth and subsequently on the classification of flood risks. The SIMWE model at a higher spatial resolution produces more overland flow and higher estimation of flood risk with low rainfall input, but larger areas of risk with high rainfall input. The Grefsen case study shows that roads act as floodways, where overland flow accumulates and moves fast.

Reliable precipitation is crucial for hydrological studies over Tibetan Plateau (TP) basins with sparsely distributed rainfall gauges. In this study, four widely used precipitation products, including the Asian Precipitation Highly Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of the water resources (APHRODITE), the High Asia Reanalysis (HAR), and the satellite-based precipitation estimates from Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) and Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM), were comprehensively evaluated by combining statistical analysis and hydrological simulation over the Upper Brahmaputra (UB) River Basin of TP during 2001–2013. In respect to the statistical assessment, the overall performances of GPM and HAR are comparable to each other, and both are superior to the other two datasets. For hydrological assessment, both daily and monthly GPM-based streamflow simulations perform the best not only at the UB outlet with very good results, but they also illustrate satisfactory results at Yangcun and Lhasa hydrological stations within the UB. Runoff simulation using HAR only performs well at the UB outlet, whereas it shows poor results at both Yangcun and Lhasa stations. The simulated results based on APHRODITE and TRMM show poor performances at UB. Generally, the GPM shows an encouraging potential for hydro-meteorological investigation over UB, although with some bias in flood simulation.

Natural disasters, including droughts and floods, have caused huge losses to mankind. Hydrological modelling is an indispensable tool for obtaining a better understanding of hydrological processes. The DEM-based routing methods, which are widely used in the distributed hydrological models, are sensitive to both the DEM resolution and the computational cell size. Too little work has been devoted to the joint effects of DEM resolution and computational cell size on the routing methods. This study aims to study the joint effects of those two factors on discharge simulation performance with two representative routing methods. The selected methods are the improved aggregated network-response function routing method (I-NRF) and the Liner-reservoir-routing method (LRR). Those two routing methods are combined with two runoff generation models to simulate the discharge. The discharge simulation performance is evaluated under the cross combination of four DEM resolutions (i.e., 90 m, 250 m, 500 m, and 1000 m) and fifty-six computational cell sizes (ranging from 5 arc-min to 60 arc-min). Eleven years of hydroclimatic data from the Jianxi basin (2000–2010) and the Shizhenjie basin (1983–1993) in China are used. The results show that the effects of the DEM resolution and the computational cell size are different on the I-NRF method and the LRR method. The computational cell size has nearly no influence on the performance of the I-NRF methods, while the DEM resolution does. On the contrary, the LRR discharge simulation performance decreases with oscillating values as the computational cell size increases, but is hardly affected by the DEM resolution. Furthermore, the joint effects of the DEM resolution and the computational cell size can be ignored for both routing methods. The results of this study will help to establish the appropriate DEM resolution, computational cell size, and routing method when researchers build hydrological models to predict future disasters.

Editors of several journals in the field of hydrology met during the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union—EGU in Vienna in April 2017. This event was a follow-up of similar meetings held in 2013 and 2015. These meetings enable the group of editors to review the current status of the journals and the publication process, and to share thoughts on future strategies. Journals were represented at the 2017 meeting by their editors, as shown in the list of authors. The main points on invigorating hydrological research through journal publications are communicated in this joint editorial published in the above journals.

Abstract The Clausius‐Clapeyron relationship holds that the atmospheric water vapor content enhances with warming temperatures, suggesting intensifications of precipitable water and also altering runoff generation. Drought conditions are determined by variations in water fluxes such as precipitation and runoff, which tightly connect with temperature scaling characteristics. However, whether and how water fluxes' scaling with temperatures may affect the evolution of droughts under climate change has not yet been systematically investigated. This study develops a cascade modeling chain consisting of the climate model ensemble, bias correction technique, and hydrological models to investigate the precipitation and runoff scaling relationships with warming temperatures under the current (1961–2005) and future periods (2011–2055 and 2056–2100), as well as their implications on future drought changes across 151 catchments in China. The results show that (1) precipitation (runoff) scaling relationships with temperatures are stable during different time periods; (2) return level analysis indicates drought risks are projected to become (1–10 times) more severe across central and southern catchments, where the precipitation (runoff) strengthens with rising temperatures up to a peak point and then decline in a hotter environment. The northeastern and western catchments, where a monotonic increasing scaling type dominated, are accompanied by drought mitigations for two future periods; (3) future changes in hydrological droughts relative to the baseline are (1–5 times) larger than those in meteorological droughts. These results imply that changes in future drought risks are highly dependent on the present precipitation (runoff)‐temperature relationships, suggesting a meaningful implication of scaling types for future drought prediction.

Abstract The quantification of climate change impacts on hydrology is subjected to multiple uncertainty sources. Large ensembles of hydrological simulations based on multimodel ensembles (MMEs) have been commonly applied to represent overall uncertainty of hydrological impacts. However, as increasing numbers of global climate models (GCMs) are being developed, how many GCMs in MMEs are sufficient to characterize overall uncertainty is not clear. Therefore, this study investigates the influences of GCM quantity on quantifying overall uncertainty and uncertainty contributions of multiple sources in hydrological impacts. Large ensembles of hydrological simulations are obtained through the permutation of 3 greenhouse gas emission scenarios, 22 GCMs, 6 downscaling techniques, 5 hydrological models (HMs), and 5 sets of HM parameters, which enables to decompose uncertainty components using analysis of variance. The influences of GCM quantity are investigated by repeatedly conducting uncertainty decomposition for hydrological simulations from subsets with different numbers of GCMs. The results show that GCMs are the leading uncertainty sources in evaluating changes in annual and peak streamflows, while for changes in low flow, other uncertainty sources except HM parameters also have large contributions to overall uncertainty. Furthermore, on the condition of using no more than five GCMs, there are large possibilities that the overall uncertainty and GCMs' uncertainty contribution are underestimated. Using around 10 GCMs can ensure that the median of different combinations generates similar uncertainty components as the whole ensemble. Therefore, it is recommended to use at least 10 GCMs in studies of climate change impacts on hydrology to thoroughly quantify uncertainty.

Monitoring of droughts is the first step into human adaptation and related management of drought hazards. Therefore, drought index is critical in drought monitoring practice. However, the standing drought indices include no information about agricultural irrigation. In this case, based on the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and the Self-Calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI), here we proposed the Modified Palmer Drought Severity Index (MPDSI) by considering agricultural irrigation such as irrigation quotas and soil water deficits. We compared changes of droughts monitored by MPDSI and other drought indices considered in this study, and found that MPDSI can well monitor drought conditions in irrigated regions. In this sense, MPDSI can monitor the actual drought conditions under human influences such as irrigation. Besides, we also found that MPDSI can well lessen overestimation of drought conditions by PDSI in terms of drought duration and drought intensity. Therefore, we can conclude that MPDSI can be accepted in drought monitoring practice across China. It should be noted here that the idea behind development of MPDSI and also the MDPSI proposed in this study can be well referenced in drought monitoring in other regions of the globe. The water cycle shows the continuous and complex movement of water within the earth and atmosphere in which water moves from the land and ocean surface to the atmosphere and back in form of precipitation [...]

Land use/cover change (LUCC) is one of the crucial factors influencing the hydrological process, thus the flood characteristics in time and space. Therefore the evaluation of the change of flood characteristics implies an integrated analysis of LUCC and hydraulic simulation. In this study, the effect of LUCC on flood is examined based on an approach composed of three parts: (1) reproduction of spatially explicit LUCC; (2) application of a 2D hydraulic modelling for flood simulation; (3) demonstration of results for Beijing. The approach is applied to a flood-prone area in Beijing. The results show that 8% and 21% of the study area experienced LUCC during 1991–2001 and 2001–2011, respectively, and these changes greatly influenced the characteristics of the 20-year flood, i.e.: (1) the flood zone is doubled during 1991–2001 and about four-fold during 2001–2011; (2) the water depth is increased for most of the study area; and (3) the flow velocity becomes faster. It indicates that flooding still exists within Beijing and is even more dangerous than 40 years ago and suggests that actual land use pattern and existing flood protection works should be re-evaluated regarding the flood characteristics change due to LUCC.

In the Himalayan region, aerosols received much attention because they affect the regional as well as local climate. Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) observation from satellite are limited in the Himalayan region mainly due to high surface reflectance. To overcome this limitation, we have conducted a multivariate regression analysis to predict the AOD over the cryospheric portion of Nepalese Himalaya. Prediction using three meteorological variables from ERA-Interim: relative humidity, wind velocity components (U10 and V10) were taken into account for model development as independent variables, while the longest time series AOD observation at Pokhara station is used as dependent variable. Model coefficients were found significant at 95 percent level with 0.53 coefficients of determination for daily values. Correlation coefficients between model output and AERONET observations were found to be 0.68, 0.73, 0.75, 0.83, and 0.82 at Lumbini, Kathmandu Bode (KTM-BO), Kathmandu University (KTM-UN), Jomson, and Pyramid laboratory/observatory (EVK2CNR) AERONET stations, respectively. Model overestimate AOD at Jomsom, and EVK2CNR AERONET stations while slightly underestimates AOD in Lumbini, KTM-UN, and KTM-BO AERONET station, respectively. Both model output and MODIS observation showed that the highest AOD over Nepal is observed during winter and pre-monsoon season. While lowest AOD is observed during monsoon, and post-monsoon season. The result of this research supports that the use of linear regression model yields good estimation for daily average AOD in Nepal. The model that we have presented could possibly be used in other mountain regions for climate research.

Surface soil moisture (SSM) is a key factor for water and heat exchanges between land surface and the atmosphere. It is also important to water resources, agriculture, and ecosystems. In the backdrop of global warming, SSM variations and potential causes are not well-known at regional scales. Based on soil moisture (SM) data from GLDAS-Noah and 16 global climate models (GCMs) selected from 25 GCMs in CMIP5, we analyzed spatial distribution and temporal changes of SSM in China and quantified fractional contributions of four meteorological factors to the SSM variations. The selected models have the same direction of historic trends in SSM during 1981–2005 as those in the GLDAS SSM data which were also further used to calibrate the trends simulated by the 16 GCMs. Based on the calibration results for the 16 GCMs, future SSMs for nine regions were analyzed in mainland China under four Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emission scenarios. No significant changes were identified in SSM across most regions of mainland China under RCP2.6 scenario. However, there is a general wetting tendency in the arid regions and drying tendency across the humid regions under all the scenarios except RCP2.6. In general, the higher the global temperature raises, the more grids with significant increase or significant decrease in SSM. These findings contradicted prevailing view that wet regions get wetter and dry regions get drier. Attribution analysis indicates that precipitation acts as the major driver for SSM variations and contributes up to 43.4% of SSM variations across China. These results provide new insights into future SSM response to climate warming and a scientific basis to mitigation and adaptation works related to SSM in the future.

To fully understand potential changes in hydrological regime over the Lhasa River Basin (LRB) and the upstream of Niyang River Basin (UNRB) in Tibetan Plateau under global warming, the VIC-glacier model was employed to analyze the responses of rainfall runoff and melt water to recent climate change, and we also quantify their roles in controlling the trend of river streamflow during 1963–2012. The hydrological model was calibrated using the observed streamflow, glacier mass balance, and MODIS snow cover. The simulations indicate that there is a significant increasing trend in glacier runoff for both basins during 1963–2012, especially in the period of 2000s when it exhibits a large increment up to about 45% relative to baseline period. Rainfall runoff suggests a rising tendency whereas snowmelt runoff displays a general decreasing tendency. For both basins, increasing rainfall runoff was identified as the dominant driver for the upward trend in total runoff during 1963–2012. The role of glacier runoff in controlling the trend of total runoff is also obvious, especially in the more glaciated UNRB where increased glacier runoff accounts for up to 41% of the tendency in river discharge. Snowmelt runoff plays a minor role in affecting the trend of total runoff.

Knowledge of vegetation dynamics in relation to climatic changes and human activities is essential for addressing the terrestrial carbon cycle in the context of global warming. Scientific detection and quantitative attribution of vegetation dynamic changes in different climatic zones and human activities are the focus and challenge of the relevant research. Taking the Poyang Lake basin as the research area, this study aimed to reveal how climate and land use drive changes in net primary productivity (NPP) in the subtropical humid basin. Change patterns of vegetation NPP and their relationships with meteorological factors across the basin were first investigated based on the estimation of 18 year (2000–2017 year) NPP by using a typical light energy utilization model, the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) model. Quantitative analysis was then conducted to explicitly distinguish the driving effects of climate change and land-use change on NPP dynamics in two different periods. Results show that annual NPP and total production (TP) of the Poyang Lake basin increased significantly from 2000 to 2017. During this period, land-use change in the basin was driven by the process of urbanization expansion and the efforts of ecological protection. Climatically, the temperature is the major influencing climatic factor in determining vegetation productivity in the subtropical humid basin, followed by precipitation and solar radiation. In addition, our investigation also revealed that with comparison to the period of 2000s, the increased TP of the Poyang Lake basin due to climate change in 2010s was much bigger than the decreased TP due to land-use change. However, in the areas where the land-use change occurred, the decreased TP was mainly attributed to the impact of land-use change, even though climate change showed a positive effect of increasing productivity.

This study comprehensively evaluates eight satellite-based precipitation datasets in streamflow simulations on a monsoon-climate watershed in China. Two mutually independent datasets—one dense-gauge and one gauge-interpolated dataset—are used as references because commonly used gauge-interpolated datasets may be biased and unable to reflect the real performance of satellite-based precipitation due to sparse networks. The dense-gauge dataset includes a substantial number of gauges, which can better represent the spatial variability of precipitation. Eight satellite-based precipitation datasets include two raw satellite datasets, Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN) and Climate Prediction Center MORPHing raw satellite dataset (CMORPH RAW); four satellite-gauge datasets, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission 3B42 (TRMM), PERSIANN Climate Data Record (PERSIANN CDR), CMORPH bias-corrected (CMORPH CRT), and gauge blended datasets (CMORPH BLD); and two satellite-reanalysis-gauge datasets, Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation (MSWEP) and Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS). The uncertainty related to hydrologic model physics is investigated using two different hydrological models. A set of statistical indices is utilized to comprehensively evaluate the precipitation datasets from different perspectives, including detection, systematic, random errors, and precision for simulating extreme precipitation. Results show that CMORPH BLD and MSWEP generally perform better than other datasets. In terms of hydrological simulations, all satellite-based datasets show significant dampening effects for the random error during the transformation process from precipitation to runoff; however, these effects cannot hold for the systematic error. Even though different hydrological models indeed introduce uncertainties to the simulated hydrological processes, the relative hydrological performance of the satellite-based datasets is consistent in both models. Namely, CMORPH BLD performs the best, which is followed by MSWEP, CMORPH CRT, and TRMM. PERSIANN CDR and CHIRPS perform moderately well, and two raw satellite datasets are not recommended as proxies of gauged observations for their worse performances.

Hydrological models for regions characterized by complex runoff generation process been suffer from a great weakness. A delicate hydrological balance triggered by prolonged wet or dry underlying condition and variable extreme rainfall makes the rainfall-runoff process difficult to simulate with traditional models. To this end, this study develops a novel vertically mixed model for complex runoff estimation that considers both the runoff generation in excess of infiltration at soil surface and that on excess of storage capacity at subsurface. Different from traditional models, the model is first coupled through a statistical approach proposed in this study, which considers the spatial heterogeneity of water transport and runoff generation. The model has the advantage of distributed model to describe spatial heterogeneity and the merits of lumped conceptual model to conveniently and accurately forecast flood. The model is tested through comparison with other four models in three catchments in China. The Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient and the ratio of qualified results increase obviously. Results show that the model performs well in simulating various floods, providing a beneficial means to simulate floods in regions with complex runoff generation process.

Reference evapotranspiration (ET0) is often used to estimate actual evapotranspiration in water balance studies. In this study, the present and future spatial distributions and temporal trends of ET0 in the Xiangjiang River Basin (XJRB) in China were analyzed. ET0 during the period from 1961 to 2010 was calculated with historical meteorological data using the FAO Penman-Monteith (FAO P-M) method, while ET0 during the period from 2011 to 2100 was downscaled from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) outputs under two emission scenarios, representative concentration pathway 4.5 and representative concentration pathway 8.5 (RCP45 and RCP85), using the statistical downscaling model (SDSM). The spatial distribution and temporal trend of ET0 were interpreted with the inverse distance weighted (IDW) method and Mann-Kendall test method, respectively. Results show that: (1) the mean annual ET0 of the XJRB is 1 006.3 mm during the period from 1961 to 2010, and the lowest and highest values are found in the northeast and northwest parts due to the high latitude and spatial distribution of climatic factors, respectively; (2) the SDSM performs well in simulating the present ET0 and can be used to predict the future ET0 in the XJRB; and (3) CMIP5 predicts upward trends in annual ET0 under the RCP45 and RCP85 scenarios during the period from 2011 to 2100. Compared with the reference period (1961–1990), ET0 increases by 9.8%, 12.6%, and 15.6% under the RCP45 scenario and 10.2%, 19.1%, and 27.3% under the RCP85 scenario during the periods from 2011 to 2040, from 2041 to 2070, and from 2071 to 2100, respectively. The predicted increasing ET0 under the RCP85 scenario is greater than that under the RCP45 scenario during the period from 2011 to 2100.

Characterized by increasing surface air temperature, global warming has altered the hydrological cycle at global and regional scales. In order to adapt water resources management under the context of global warming, attribution analysis on regional differentiation of water resources in the Yangtze River basin (YRB) was conducted in this study. Meteoro-hydrological variations across the basin were examined for the period 1960–2013, and then a statistic-based method was applied in quantifying the contributions of climate variability and human activities on annual runoff variations in different tributary sub-basins in the YRB. Our observation indicates that both the annual increasing rate and the inter-annual fluctuations of temperature in China and in the YRB were higher than that of the global average since the turn of the century. Climate change analysis indicates that the YRB experienced a hot-wet period during 1994–2002 and a hot-dry period during 2003–2013, since the step change of temperature in 1993. Contributions of climate change and human activities on runoff variations varied spatially in the basin. With reference to the baseline period of 1960–1993, the contribution of climate change played a dominant role in most regions of the basin, especially in those upstream sub-basins. The effect of human activities in the basin was quite complicated, not only its regional differentiation, but also its contribution were opposite during the hot-wet period and the hot-dry period in some sub-basins. The result of this study is helpful in understanding the impacts of climate change and human activities on water resources variation in both temporal and spatial scales.
