Abstract In pursuit of the highest possible energy density, researchers shift their focus to the ultimate anode material, lithium metal (Li0), and high‐capacity cathode materials with high nickel content (Ni > 80%). The combination of these aggressive electrodes presents unprecedented challenges to the electrolyte. Here, we report a hybrid electrolyte consisting of a highly fluorinated ionic liquid and a weakly solvating fluorinated ether, whose hybridization structure enables the reversible operation of a battery chemistry based on Li0 and LiNiO2 (Ni = 100%), delivering nearly theoretical capacity of the latter (up to 249 mAh g−1) for >300 cycles with retention of 78.6% and in absence of unwanted morphological changes in both electrodes. Extensive characterization assisted by molecular dynamic simulation and density functional theory calculations reveals the function of the fluorinated ether to be far more profound than simple dilution and viscosity reduction. Instead, it induces drastic changes in Li+‐solvation environment, the consequence of which engenders simultaneous stabilization of electrode/electrolyte and interfacing via formation of respective interfacial chemistries. This study further unlocks fundamental knowledge underneath the prevailing “diluent strategy” that is extensively applied by the electrolyte researchers and opens more design space for the next‐generation electrolytes and interphases for these coveted battery chemistries.

Economical production of lignin-based jet fuel (LJF) can improve the sustainability of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) as well as can reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions. However, the challenge lies in converting technical lignin polymer from biorefinery directly to jet fuel in a continuous operation. In this work, we demonstrate a simultaneous depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation (SDHDO) process to produce lignin-based jet fuel from the alkali corn stover lignin (ACSL) using engineered Ru-HY-60-MI catalyst in a continuous flow reactor, for the first time. The maximum carbon yield of LJF of 17.9 wt% was obtained, and it comprised of 60.2 wt% monocycloalkanes, and 21.6 wt% polycycloalkanes. Catalyst characterization of Ru-HY-60-MI suggested there was no significant change in HY zeolite structure and its crystallinity after catalyst engineering. Catalyst characterizations performed post the SDHDO experiments indicate presence of carbon and K content in the catalyst. K content presence in the spent catalyst was due to K+ ion was exchanged between lignin solution and HY-60 while carbon presence validated the SDHDO chemistry on the catalyst surface. Tier α fuel property testing indicates that LJF production using SDHDO chemistry can produce SAF with high compatibility, good sealing properties, low emissions, and high energy density for aircraft.

The high energy density advantage of lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) makes them increasingly desirable; however, problems such as strong reactivity and dendrite growth of Li metal anode limit their practical uses. In this work, a novel Li‐containing glycerol (LiGL) or lithicone protection layer on a 50 μm thick Li metal anode is employed for improving the performance of LMBs. This LiGL layer was accurately deposited via a molecular layer deposition (MLD) process at 150 °C, using lithium tert‐butoxide and glycerol as precursors. The as‐formed LiGL coating layer is highly tunable in its thickness by simply adjusting MLD cycles and shows a good stability and outstanding ionic transport properties. The LiGL layer is found to effectively mitigate side reactions and enhance cycling stability in both symmetric cells and full cells. Specifically, the LMBs with LiGL@Li anode of 400 MLD cycles and LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 cathode enable a capacity retention of ≈87%, much higher than ≈35% of the cells with bare Li after 200 cycles at a charge/discharge current density of 2.1 mA cm−2. This work paves a feasible way for practical LMBs with improved capacity and stability through applying an innovative protection layer on Li metal anodes.

Abstract Surface passivation, a desirable natural consequence during initial oxidation of alloys, is the foundation for functioning of corrosion and oxidation resistant alloys ranging from industrial stainless steel to kitchen utensils. This initial oxidation has been long perceived to vary with crystal facet, however, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here, using in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy, we gain atomic details on crystal facet dependent initial oxidation behavior in a model Ni-5Cr alloy. We find the (001) surface shows higher initial oxidation resistance as compared to the (111) surface. We reveal the crystal facet dependent oxidation is related to an interfacial atomic sieving effect, wherein the oxide/metal interface selectively promotes diffusion of certain atomic species. Density functional theory calculations rationalize the oxygen diffusion across Ni(111)/NiO(111) interface, as contrasted with Ni(001)/NiO(111), is enhanced. We unveil that crystal facet with initial fast oxidation rate could conversely switch to a slow steady state oxidation.

Abstract Twinning, on par with dislocations, is critically required in plastic deformation of hexagonal close-packed crystals at low temperatures. In contrast to that in cubic-structured crystals, twinning in hexagonal close-packed crystals requires atomic shuffles in addition to shear. Though the twinning shear that is carried by twinning dislocations has been captured for decades, direct experimental observation of the atomic shuffles, especially when the shuffling mode is not unique and does not confine to the plane of shear, remains a formidable challenge to date. Here, by using in-situ transmission electron microscopy, we directly capture the atomic mechanism of the $$\left\{11\bar{2}1\right\}$$ 11 2 ¯ 1 twinning in hexagonal close packed rhenium nanocrystals. Results show that the $$\left\{11\bar{2}1\right\}$$ 11 2 ¯ 1 twinning is dominated by the (b 1/2, h1/2) twinning disconnections. In contrast to conventional expectations, the atomic shuffles accompanying the twinning disconnections proceed on alternative basal planes along 1/6 $$\left\langle 1\bar{1}00\right\rangle$$ 1 1 ¯ 00 , which may be attributed to the free surface in nanocrystal samples, leading to a lack of mirror symmetry across the $$\left\{11\bar{2}1\right\}$$ 11 2 ¯ 1 twin boundary.

Abscisic acid (ABA) significantly regulates plant growth and development, promoting tuberous root formation in various plants. However, the molecular mechanisms of ABA in the tuberous root development of Pseudostellaria heterophylla are not yet fully understood. This study utilized Illumina sequencing and de novo assembly strategies to obtain a reference transcriptome associated with ABA treatment. Subsequently, integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses were used to determine gene expression profiles in P. heterophylla tuberous roots. ABA treatment significantly increases the diameter and shortens the length of tuberous roots. Clustering analysis identified 2,256 differentially expressed genes and 679 differentially abundant proteins regulated by ABA. Gene co-expression and protein interaction networks revealed ABA positively induced 30 vital regulators. Furthermore, we identified and assigned putative functions to transcription factors (PhMYB10, PhbZIP2, PhbZIP, PhSBP) that mediate ABA signaling involved in the regulation of tuberous root development, including those related to cell wall metabolism, cell division, starch synthesis, hormone metabolism. Our findings provide valuable insights into the complex signaling networks of tuberous root development modulated by ABA. It provided potential targets for genetic manipulation to improve the yield and quality of P. heterophylla, which could significantly impact its cultivation and medicinal value.

Abstract Chemical short-range-order has been widely noticed to dictate the electrochemical properties of Li-excess cation-disordered rocksalt oxides, a class of cathode based on earth abundant elements for next-generation high-energy-density batteries. Existence of short-range-order is normally evidenced by a diffused intensity pattern in reciprocal space, however, derivation of local atomic arrangements of short-range-order in real space is hardly possible. Here, by a combination of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and cluster-expansion Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal the short-range-order is a convolution of three basic types: tetrahedron, octahedron, and cube. We discover that short-range-order directly correlates with Li percolation channels, which correspondingly affects Li transport behavior. We further demonstrate that short-range-order can be effectively manipulated by anion doping or post-synthesis thermal treatment, creating new avenues for tailoring the electrochemical properties. Our results provide fundamental insights for decoding the complex relationship between local chemical ordering and properties of crystalline compounds.

Abstract Anisotropic and efficient transport of ions under external stimuli governs the operation and failure mechanisms of energy-conversion systems and microelectronics devices. However, fundamental understanding of ion hopping processes is impeded by the lack of atomically precise materials and probes that allow for the monitoring and control at the appropriate time- and length- scales. In this work, using in-situ transmission electron microscopy, we directly show that oxygen ion migration in vacancy ordered, semiconducting SrFeO2.5 epitaxial thin films can be guided to proceed through two distinctly different diffusion pathways, each resulting in different polymorphs of SrFeO2.75 with different ground electronic properties before reaching a fully oxidized, metallic SrFeO3 phase. The diffusion steps and reaction intermediates are revealed by means of ab-initio calculations. The principles of controlling oxygen diffusion pathways and reaction intermediates demonstrated here may advance the rational design of structurally ordered oxides for tailored applications and provide insights for developing devices with multiple states of regulation.

Abstract Fluorides have been identified as a key ingredient in interphases supporting aggressive battery chemistries. While the precursor for these fluorides must be pre-stored in electrolyte components and only delivered at extreme potentials, the chemical source of fluorine so far has been confined to either negatively-charge anions or fluorinated molecules, whose presence in the inner-Helmholtz layer of electrodes, and consequently their contribution to the interphasial chemistry, is restricted. To pre-store fluorine source on positive-charged species, here we show a cation that carries fluorine in its structure is synthesized and its contribution to interphasial chemistry is explored for the very first time. An electrolyte carrying fluorine in both cation and anion brings unprecedented interphasial chemistries that translate into superior battery performance of a lithium-metal battery, including high Coulombic efficiency of up to 99.98%, and Li0-dendrite prevention for 900 hours. The significance of this fluorinated cation undoubtedly extends to other advanced battery systems beyond lithium, all of which universally require kinetic protection of highly fluorinated interphases.

Abstract Background Proanthocyanidins (PAs) have always been considered as important medicinal value component. In order to gain insights into the PA biosynthesis regulatory network in I. stachyodes roots, we analyzed the transcriptome of the I. stachyodes in Leaf, Stem, RootI (one-year-old root), and RootII (two-year-old root). Results In this study, a total of 110,779 non-redundant unigenes were obtained, of which 63,863 could be functionally annotated. Simultaneously, 75 structural genes that regulate PA biosynthesis were identified, of these 6 structural genes (IsF3′H1, IsANR2, IsLAR2, IsUGT72L1-3, IsMATE2, IsMATE3) may play an important role in the synthesis of PAs in I. stachyodes roots. Furthermore, co-expression network analysis revealed that 34 IsMYBs, 18 IsbHLHs, 15 IsWRKYs, 9 IsMADSs, and 3 IsWIPs hub TFs are potential regulators for PA accumulation. Among them, IsMYB24 and IsMYB79 may be closely involved in the PA biosynthesis in I. stachyodes roots. Conclusions The biosynthesis of PAs in I. stachyodes roots is mainly produced by the subsequent pathway of cyanidin. Our work provides new insights into the molecular pathways underlying PA accumulation and enhances our global understanding of transcriptome dynamics throughout different tissues.

In this work, we use in-situ TEM in combination with finite elemental analysis to reveal the sub-grain boundary formation during bending of Cu single crystal. The deformation process is featured by dislocations propagation, formation of stacking faults and deformation twins, and subsequent formation of a sub-grain boundary. Finite element analysis of stress distribution indicates the stacking faults and deformation twins are all initiated from the region that corresponds to the maximum shear stress. The formation of the sub-grain boundary is through the intersection between primary and secondary stacking faults/deformation twins.

The reconstruction of 3D shapes from a single view has been a longstanding challenge. Previous methods have primarily focused on learning either geometric features that depict overall shape contours but are insufficient for occluded regions, local features that capture details but cannot represent the complete structure, or structural features that encode part relationships but require predefined semantics. However, the fusion of geometric, local, and structural features has been lacking, leading to inaccurate reconstruction of shapes with occlusions or novel compositions. To address this issue, we propose a two-stage approach for achieving 3D shape reconstruction. In the first stage, we encode the hierarchical structure features of the 3D shape using an encoder-decoder network. In the second stage, we enhance the hierarchical structure features by fusing them with global and point features and feed the enhanced features into a signed distance function (SDF) prediction network to obtain rough SDF values. Using the camera pose, we project arbitrary 3D points in space onto different depth feature maps of the CNN and obtain their corresponding positions. Then, we concatenate the features of these corresponding positions together to form local features. These local features are also fed into the SDF prediction network to obtain fine-grained SDF values. By fusing the two sets of SDF values, we improve the accuracy of the model and enable it to reconstruct other object types with higher quality. Comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in terms of accuracy.

Abstract Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are one of the most promising next‐generation energy storage technologies due to their high theoretical energy and low cost. However, Li–S cells with practically high energy still suffer from a very limited cycle life with reasons which remain unclear. Here, through cell study under practical conditions, it is proved that an internal short circuit (ISC) is a root cause of early cell failure and is ascribed to the crosstalk between the S cathode and Li anode. The cathode topography affects S reactions through influencing the local resistance and electrolyte distribution, particularly under lean electrolyte conditions. The inhomogeneous reactions of S cathodes are easily mirrored by the Li anodes, resulting in exaggerated localized Li plating/stripping, Li filament formation, and eventually cell ISC. Manipulating cathode topography is proven effective to extend the cell cycle life under practical conditions. The findings of this work shed new light on the electrode design for extending cycle life of high‐energy Li–S cells, which are also applicable for other rechargeable Li or metal batteries.

miRNAs play a crucial role in the development and growth of plants by inhibiting the function of targeted genes at the post-transcription level. However, no miRNAs in Pseudostellaria heterophylla have been reported and their function in the morphogenesis of organs is still unclear. In this study, a total of 159 conserved miRNAs (belonging to 64 families) and 303 level miRNAs were identified from P. heterophylla. Some of them showed specifically up or down-regulated expression in different tissues and numbers of unigenes involved in Plant-pathogen interaction and MAPK signaling pathway-plant were targeted. The significant negative correlation of expression profiles between 30 miRNAs and their target genes (37 unigenes) was observed, respectively. Further, a large number of genes involved with signal transduction of auxin, zeatin, abscisic acid and, jasmonic acid were targeted. Predicated targets of two miRNAs were validated by 5'RLM-RACE, respectively. A large number of mRNAs from four pathogens were targeted by miRNAs from P. heterophylla and some of them were targeted by miR414. In summary, we reported a population of miRNAs from four different vegetative tissues of P. heterophylla by high throughput sequencing, which was analyzed by combining with the constructed transcriptome. These results may help to explain the function of miRNAs in the morphogenesis of organs and defense of pathogens, and may provide theoretical basis for breeding and genetic improvement of P. heterophylla.

Al dopants form not only lattice solid solution but also Al2O3 islands on the surface.

Alloy anode materials are receiving renewed interest. Here the authors show the design of Ge-Zn nanofibers for lithium ion batteries. Featured by a homogeneous composition at the atomic level and other favorable structural attributes, the materials allow for impressive electrochemical performance.

Silicon-based anodes are attractive for lithium ion batteries, but improvements in conductivity, ionic diffusion and structural stability would extend applications. Here the authors show that low sulfur-doping in a silicon anode leads to highly stable and fast battery cycling with a high energy density.

Here, Lu and co-workers show the synthesis of high-quality, nitrogen-doped, mesoporous graphene particles using CVD with MgO as the catalyst and template. When used as the anode for a lithium ion battery, their unique architecture allows for excellent rate performance and cycling stability.

Lithium (Li)-rich manganese (Mn)-rich oxide (LMR) cathode materials, despite of the high specific capacity up to 250 mAh g−1 suffer from instability of cathode/electrolyte interfacial layer at high working voltages, causing continuous voltage decay and capacity fading, especially at elevated temperatures. In various battery systems, localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have been widely reported as a promising candidate to form effective electrode/electrolyte interphases. Here, an optimized LHCE is studied in graphite (Gr)-based full cells containing LMR cathode, being cycled at 25, 45 and 60 °C with the reference of a conventional LiPF6-based electrolyte. It is revealed that the LHCE can effectively suppress continuous electrolyte decompositions and mitigate the dissolution of Mn ions due to the formation of more protective electrode/electrolyte interphases on both anode and cathode, which, in turn, lead to significantly improved cycling stability and enhanced rate capability under the selected temperatures. The mechanistic understanding on the failure of the conventional LiPF6-containing electrolyte and the function of the LHCE in Gr||LMR cells under high temperatures provides valuable perspectives of electrolyte development for practical applications of LMR cathodes in high energy density batteries over a wide temperature range.
